I'll take that bet as well.
[prediction of future computing]
In 20 years the desktop and laptop PC will be dead. OSs will be little more than advanced internet browsers where users access programs and data on networked drives so that their content is available anywhere they go. We will access the majority of our personal files and such from devices that have evolved from the cell phone. AND Linux will be 'ready for the desktop' just in time for everyone to ditch conventional PCs. HAHA. Stupid linux.
[/prediction of future computing] - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2considering they just sold their $1billionth song, i'm sure $50M is pocket change.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>Apple hardly got any portion of that 99 cents, they're making the real money off iPods, not off >iTunes
The breakdown is:
Label: 55 cents
Apple: 34 cents
Artist: 10 cents
1Billion*34c=lots more cash than I have.

BTW, anyone else notice that whenever a Windows or MS story shows up on the front page, people will come along and say snide things about Windows and MS, whereas if an Apple story makes it to the front page, people say snide things about Mac users?
Grow up already. - ahdustin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like we've got a movie storie coming.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 "considering they just sold their $1billionth song, i'm sure $50M is pocket change."
"The songs only cost $.99, not $1. 1 billion pennies is lots of money."
Apple hardly got any portion of that 99 cents, they're making the real money off iPods, not off iTunes. - CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Newark, CA...not NJ. Newark is in the East Bay of Silicon Valley. Anyway, Apple's aggressive purchases hint at their possible interest in expanding their facilities to handle all the servers they'll need for their downloadable Movie offering via the upcoming "iTunes Movie Store.."
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe they're just offering a target for UAE to wreck on that side of the Hudson.

You fail to take into account the cost of bandwidth from Akamai. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait, Newark where? Is there are Newark in California or are they talking about New Jersey?
It's weird how they just say Newark, and not the state. But I'm guessing it's in California. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apple got a damn good deal too. Probably because that facility has been empty for 5 years just waiting to be plucked and seeded with goodness.
- volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gabe: I say we buy Creative mp3 players and show them that Newark is Creative territory since they've been here for years (right down the street on Automall).
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A large corporation buying real estate. . .
I'VE LOOKING FOR THESE KINDS OF NEW AND INTERESTING ARTICLES FOR WEEKS! - volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For all those also questioning the Newark they are talking about, I'm from Newark, California and I'm questioning too. I was gonna say they need to start being more specific, thinking they meant New Jersey but it's a San Jose paper which isn't far from here. When they open up here I'll be on their door step protesting with my broken Ipod.
- bbatsell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Tier rating system as defined in TIA/EIA-942 doesn't apply to size or capacity but to the level of security and redundancy in a datacenter. Most corporate services run in at the most Tier II facilities; Tier IV facilities are only required for applications that must have redundancy and security by law, i.e. banking and stock market applications, and some healthcare applications.
- riczho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oooh.. seems to be in CA:
http://tinyurl.com/fgfb7 - uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1...oh, Newark, California? Whoops. I guess technically, it's still on that side of the Hudson.
- bbqribs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Speculate all you want, but this really isn't that big of a story. Apple is just shuffling some boxes out of Cupertino and into this much larger and better equipped data center. It's really that simple.
/has a friend that's working on that very project. - CatFood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iTunes just got a permanent home base.
I wonder if they'll slap the iTunes logo on the door :) - pseudojd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I worked at a DC in SJ. It's initials were DI. Digital Island. those were the good times. that place laid me off. bastards
- scaaven2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg to death
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Weird. Couple this with their recent trademark filing for "Mobile Me" and you've got the makings of some really good conspiracy theories. :^)
- oneMadRssn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Exponential growth?
Does anyone wanna bet that 20 years from today Apple will be the big bad american computer monopoly, and Microsoft will be a failing company that will rehire some bussiness major on acid after many terrible product and somehow begin to thrive again as the underdog. - Kazaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple buying a data storage, network equipped, impressive center less then a week from the 28th?
Hmm... - bbatsell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a Tier IV facility, which seems like massive overkill for anything Apple would need...
- Aero1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0newark nj, there is an brand new mci building there that is empty. how do i know you ask? went to college there.
- yllabianbitpipe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If Apple does come out with a movie download site, they better price it appropriately, meaning, competitive with Netflix. I won't pay more than 3 bucks a movie download even if I do get to "keep it" on my hard drive. Still even at that price point they would make a killing, let's just hope they don't get greedy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What Newark is it? NJ or Delaware?
- DiggRadar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Given the recent chart of iTune sale's growth, Apple at least needs some more capacity for their given product offerings. If Apple adds more content (movies, high-def versions of TV or music videos, etc.), they will definitely need more capacity.
If Apple spins off the iTunes/iPod business (which, beyond other things, would settle that pesky lawsuit by Beatles' Apple Music), putting assets in separate buildings would make this easier. - leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds like a nice server room to host an iTunes movie store or an Apple branded search engine :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks bbatsell
- chaos86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0... movies in the iTMS
- bbatsell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Phatlip, Newark, California.
- binnis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That was a bit confusing about the state. At first I thought they meant Newark, NJ. I thought to myself, why would apple come to f*#$ing Newark!!
- floorpie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone here work in a data center? Know how long it takes to set up the servers? Or what condition the data center is in? It takes a while to vacuum up 5 years of dust, no? Just wondering how soon we should start expecting Apple to come out with some interesting bandwidth intensive services...
- bigtravman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple is offering Terabytes of storage for educational institution podcasting for free. A data center seems logical.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should name it "Disney"
- mikeod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is good news. It allows us to speculate on Apple purchasing Disney and moving their server farm from Rackspace to Apple's own data center.
- squenix1221, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow... $0.34, I thought they made less than that...
- royeiror, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so, anyone knows how much capacity they might be able to have in that facillity?, because area by itself tells me nothing... i mean you can stack a few terabytes in less than a square foot, although maybe a few feet high... i just have that curiosity.
- chabuhi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fill it with customer service, please.
- jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0$40 million of it is to pump out the smell
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dIGG THE NEW APPLE WEBSITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL! I seriously hope they're not planning on running this on OSX Server!
- ApplePenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the cost breakdown is different for independent artists...
the artist gets somewhere in the $0.70s... It was talked about a while back on the Daily Source Code.... - volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's how far I live from there...
A little farther down Cherry St. and around the corner is Asus's RMA.... Beats shipping my laptop in every time somethin goes wrong (-; - grtek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0man now me and my friends cant hang out there at night, probably going to be more security now, the current guy is cool he doesn't care when we come by
- volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=%22Eureka+Drive%22+Newark,+California&ll=37.51053,-121.999601&spn=0.001166,0.00339&t=h
Sorry it got filtered out of my last comment - migsims, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah definately Newark, CA... the article is in the silicon valley / san jose journal, if it was NJ they would have said NJ. Plus it's down the street from my house... time for some spying... :P
