- griz, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37For all you who are bitching about Apple SPAM!!
Remember, there IS an Apple category and that is where this is from.
However, it might be better suited for the "Deals" category. - pjh3000, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Because of course the one thing that will really help the kiddies with their learning is an iPod.
- egger_please, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25They did this last year with the mini...right before the nano came out. Readers are left to draw their own conclusions.
- StoneWolf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12How are the MacBooks NOT fast? Their only real weakness is the integrated graphics.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Perhaps you've never:
Taken a distance ed course while on campus - sometimes your courses conflict - take distance ed and you can go to class via any DAP at 2am.
Used an iPod as a digital record - handy as hell for that one lecture that you had difficulty staying awake in but is - of course - is the focus of the midterm.
Needed a little rock and/or roll to keep you awake while you study.
As a matter of fact, an iPod (or any DAP) is great for university/college. Now that I've graduated I still use it for the free courses offered through the iTunes music store and for focusing my mind at work. So yeah, I say good on 'em. - moisie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11It's not Apple burning you, every company releases new products and every company reduces prices of offers deals on older stock etc. It's just more visible with apple since they have a relatively small line of products with transparent naming schemes. When they release something new they tend to retire something else. As opposed to say, Dell, who have a myriad of different products and a myriad of variations on them, all of which have numbers and letters as names which mean nothing.
You just have to console yourself with the fact that no matter who you buy something with in the world of technology - a few months later something better will be available. With apple the dividing line is a little more obvious. - circa1978, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15I guess you have never heard of iTunes U. There are a couple of universities that put their lectures in iTunes with the support of Apple.

exactly. when i bought my G4 powerbook in August 2004, they tried to sell me an ipod and i thought to myself "how the hell is an ipod going to help me with my studies?" - perryge, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12@ Johnkers
Bad news dude, the offer only applies if you have both the iPod and the Mac in the same order. - Yoshi39, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15Is this US only?
- blacklilyninja, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10rebates BOOOOOOO apple
- Durvivor, on 10/12/2007, -14/+18This makes my upcoming MacBook purchase even sweeter. Now, the big question becomes "will Apple release the full sized video iPod before september" question 2 "will Apple upgrade the MacBook to use 'Intel Core Duo 2' before september."
- Braxo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Spam? Even though the digger chose to use "apple" as the category for this, there is still a category labeled "deals" and I see this as a deal we should know about, not spam.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9"I guess you have never heard of iTunes U. There are a couple of universities that put their lectures in iTunes with the support of Apple."
And that fancy new laptop you just bought can't play them? - DigDugDigger, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I believe anyone can take this order, not just students. I've always purchased my computers through Apple's education site, and they never ask for any proof.
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah Amazon is great- no tax for new apple products.
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not only do you owe the tax in NY, but IRS claims that should they audit you and find tax-free online orders in your bank and credit card statements, they would charge you with fraud.
Pay up... jerks. If you don't like the law, lobby to have it changed.
If you are practicing civil disobedience, be ready to pay to the price. - larrabee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good point, did he say he is just waiting for a replacement or did he return it outright?
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11You get the $199 model 2gb version for $179 with the student discount, so this rebate makes the 2gb free. Or you can apply that $179 dollar rebate to any ipod.
- thejerm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8any... up to $179 rebate
- Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12@ rebrad: So do you make a habit of replying to email spam? No? Then why bother us with your drivel?
- dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Look at the fanboi's go mod-down happy if you speak against Apple!
I think it's a great idea with a great product, and I believe Apple will honor their mail-in rebates. But the entire thing that makes these rebates profitable is that it increases sales and moves a product that's at its end-of-life, and banks on a higher percentage of customers never sending in the rebate.
I've sent in more than my fair share and never received my money back. Some from unknown companies (memory companies come to mind here), but I've had a couple from Memorex and Linksys where I basically got a poke in the eye. At best, it's the company financing the product to you, and sometimes, they default. - gordonp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They did this with the iPod Mini a couple years ago, then Bam!, they were discontinued.
- Eliminator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In NY you still owe the tax.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Or you could buy a pc, and save enough money on that purchase with respect to buying a Mac to buy a video iPod.
- dbxz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3US only?
- alexhhhh, on 11/28/2008, -4/+6umm no. This would actually fall under the Deals category. edit: Braxo beat me to it
Sucks that this is only US. Or at least, there's nothing about this on the Canada store. - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Note: Above link has a script involved when you open it. Use the NoScript extension in Firefox and see for yourselves. I don't trust this guy.
- javvidal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well of course, because that means the new upgraded iPod Nano will be coming out soon after the students get them all. Smae thing happened last year with the iPod Mini, replaced by the Nano 1 month later
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10You know what you do when you presume?
You make a pres out of U and me!
*ducks* - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Did they teach grammar in yours?
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm really glad I waited on buying my MacBook. The free Nano offsets the black tax.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@strictnein
You missed the point. I'm talking about the obsession with keeping youth locked up in school nearly year round instead of giving them a little freedom. This all goes back to the insecurity that most Americans have surrounding the concept of "winning". Winning is fine if it's done fairly (which it rarely is by most Americans) but it becomes a problem when it is the sole goal and breeds nothing but aggressive competition. That's the problem and that's a really good reason to hate America. Instead of cooperation, we wrongfully encourage competition to the point that it's destroying the good side of America. The side that was willing to let foreign people in. The side that had no problem with gays wanting to get married. The side that believes every woman should have access to safe family planning options. You can see where this is going... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Um no not really because the Nano is still free and you still get the 10% student discount. How is that a worse deal?
- soontogetbanned, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4This should be under Deals otherwise this is spam.
- tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3back to school? it just ended two weeks ago!? AAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHH!
- fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6how else can they do it? Best Buy and all the other companies are not going to reduce their profit on the macs to give a free ipod out. this way they can buy the ipod and mac from mac mall or best buy or what ever and still get that rebate.
- SIBerger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$99 printer - $99 ONLINE or mail-in rebate = free
$199 nano - $20 student discount - $179 ONLINE or mail-in rebate = free
check out www.apple.com/promo if you think these rebates are going to cost you a postage stamp. - strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4You hate America because a company has a rebate for a product that will be wanted by a lot of people who be starting college in 2 - 2.5 months? Amazing.
Sounds like you'll fit in perfectly at most schools. - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No... he got a free laptop from Lenovo and decided to try it out. I know if a company (that traditionally made great laptops, well, IBM anyway) wanted to give me one of their top-model laptops I'd jump on it. But Kevin mentioned a couple times that he wasn't sure about it and would probably go back to his MacBook Pro.
- leighhalliday, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4So lets see... you paid 179 for the mini, received 179 back, then sold the mini for 175... and made 354? Where did this magical extra money come from? As I see it, you only made 175. A rebate implies you had to pay for it to begin with... you didn't get a free mini plus an extra 179... you paid for a mini then got your money back. Still a deal I guess... but either way, you didn't make as much as you say.
- asdren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Durvivor, not the macbook but perhaps (hopefully) the macbook pro
also, the powermac (mac pro?) should be updated by september - Joyrex, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6This is more than likely to clear out old Nano stock before they announce a new flavor of Nano, presumably the rumoured 4 and 8GB models.
Sadly, the Mac Mini is not eligable in their promotion. - noripcord7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Not sure if anyone else has commented on this or is even in my position but...
If you just bought any of the Apple products that qualify for the rebate and you call the Apple store and make a fuss, they will give you the full $179 rebate.
If, however, you customized the product, they will give you a $100 instant rebate on any iPod over $100 (less than the full rebate since your purchase doesn't qualify for a return, and you therefore can't simply return the purchased Apple product and re-buy it under the rebate). I wasn't thrilled by this, but $100 is better than nothing, and they know it. - SirRX7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0too bad its for higher education schools only. I wouldn't mind getting this hookup for my 8 and 4 year old. You'd think Apple would want to get them young.
- larrabee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Good call, I got $63 sales tax, but its still a good deal.
- larrabee, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Could this mean that they are clearing out the old ipods for a new model?
- Jangles, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4This is geared towards college students...who most have been off for a while. How many High school and grade school students do you see with laptops in class these days?
- griz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Only if you don't "MAIL IT IN"
- OverHeadCam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1X2. I wasn't in the market for a nano, but had I waited a couple weeks, I would have put it to good use (eBay).
