- RamezaniK, on 10/24/2009, -5/+78Alas, the Anti-Linux has arrived.
- AngelBunny, on 10/25/2009, -11/+73Apple has a history of applying for patents they will intentionally not use for multiple reasons:
1) So competitors can't do it.
2) obscurity. Apple likes to keep their competitors guessing.
3) $$$. Most companies sit on patents they never intend to use so the second another company does it Apple can sue their asses. Sad but true.. just about every big business in this country does this. - agdtinman, on 10/25/2009, -5/+66Why use Microsoft Office as the example here? Way to obscure what company actually filed the patent. This is APPLE doing this, fanboys.
(comment posted from my Macbook Pro) - tdmeth, on 10/25/2009, -4/+59So Apple is in the patent troll business?
- datdamonfoo, on 10/25/2009, -7/+35Apple fans can't stand bad news about their holy company, so they mention MS to deflect some of the blow.
- DaviDTC, on 10/25/2009, -3/+29Doesn't surprise me it would be Apple to go for something like that.
- Genecalypse, on 10/25/2009, -4/+29huge fail
- candorny, on 10/25/2009, -12/+35I'd love to see all those Apple fanboys who were bitching about the Zune HD having ads in exchange for free apps now.
- theNazz, on 10/24/2009, -3/+24Great idea as long as you're looking at it from the vendor standpoint. From the end user standpoint this is not a good sign of things to come.
- Salif, on 10/25/2009, -7/+271. Piss off your own customers.
2. ???
3. Profit?
Sounds like they want us to switch to linux - inactive, on 10/25/2009, -2/+22I've used Macs since 1989. I've probably owned 10 or 12 Macs in my life. I spent 10 years reviewing Mac games (yeah, that's right... Mac games). My best friend uses a Mac. My brother uses a Mac. My kids use Macs. As an aside, I've probably had 4 or 5 iPods as well.
That having been said, if I have to deal with advertising embedded in the Mac OS, I will never touch or look at another product from Apple again for the rest of my life, regardless of whether the ads are embedded or not. - carbonfilament, on 10/25/2009, -0/+16Dear Apple,
Please get this patent so that no one else can do this. Proceed to not use this in any product.
Oh and if you actually do put this in an OS, ***** you. - nextekcarl, on 10/25/2009, -0/+14...now with even MORE embedded ads!
- kovac9478, on 10/25/2009, -1/+15i got a bad feeling about this...
- toddji, on 10/25/2009, -11/+24Wow, it's not that hard to put the pieces together here people.
1. Take a look at Apple's products. How much advertising do you see? That's right, none. No stickers on their laptops to get them a few bucks from Intel, McAfee, etc. No pre-loaded crapware on their systems. Clearly Apple will be the last company to clutter up their own products with advertising.
2. Other OS vendors have been looking for ways to move from a one time sale to a recurring revenue stream (subscription Office anyone?). So, Apple says "fine, have advertising supported software. You'll just have to license that from us. There go your profits."
I hate patent trolling as much as the next guy. But, if that's the state of the industry today, you can't blame them for trying to outflank their competitors. - sandeepx, on 10/25/2009, -0/+13http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Computer,_Inc._ ...
- AngelBunny, on 10/25/2009, -1/+14More like, "Which big business isn't?"
- Idiggapony, on 10/25/2009, -3/+15If they put this ***** on my Mac, I will throw it out my window, as hard as I can, in the general direction of Cupertino.
- pharmosh, on 10/25/2009, -5/+16Cool, so does that mean if they file for the patent then Microsoft can't do embedded advertising? I'm all for it!
- kevinmoore, on 10/25/2009, -5/+16Having a patent for something and actually shipping a product that uses said patent are two very different things.
- ggggbabybabybab, on 10/25/2009, -1/+12I thought the same thing, fanboism and all that crap aside, it did seem odd they would use a Microsoft product as an example.
- DaviDTC, on 10/25/2009, -1/+12The vendor should also look at it from the users view too. They should be making things the user wants, for some reason I don't think people will want this. This could do more damage than good depending on how much it is used.
- dvsbastard, on 10/25/2009, -0/+10Coming soon: Adblock for your OS...
- Idiggapony, on 10/25/2009, -1/+10You know what I don't understand? How can you patent the very idea of an OS blocking access to an application until the user views an advertisement? Isn't that too general an idea to patent?
Here's my invention, which I'm going to patent tomorrow: processor chips that are much faster than the ones that are available today. There, I did it. Now, if anyone ever wants to build a faster computer, they'll have to license it from me. - theonlywizdum, on 10/25/2009, -2/+11So Apple is the savior of all computing-kind?
- TheSabre, on 10/25/2009, -2/+10NeoTechni, as a really happy person, I am offended by the use of gay to mean homosexual. Knock it off NeoTechni, there is no excuse for it.
- tcheck, on 10/25/2009, -0/+8What the f**k? Somehow, someway, they STILL put Microsoft in the scenario as the "bad guy."
- Trevahaha, on 10/25/2009, -1/+9It most likely would be seen in a mobile OS, such as the iPhone. This way they could do advertising and sharing revenue with application developers while not requiring each application owner to figure out their own process for advertising.
Again, OS is about shared services and advertising could be considered a shared resource. - roxgod666, on 10/25/2009, -2/+10OS X- Ad edition
This karma is killing me. - doctordbx, on 10/25/2009, -0/+8@tomis - I can imagine how that theory would be popular with the "Apple can do no wrong" community, but given that this is one of the largest commercial music and content vendors in the world, I can't see it NOT being used.
- Idiggapony, on 10/25/2009, -1/+9I'm with DaviDTC. If the OS is so ***** offensive that everyone who uses it immediately develops a loathing for the company that made it, a hatred so intense that it makes them fantasize about breaking into the CEO's house and yelling at him, that can't end up being good for the vendor in the long run.
- matticusf1nch, on 10/25/2009, -1/+9Let's orchestrate a Digg boycott if they ever use it.
- norman619, on 10/25/2009, -7/+14I'd love ot hear the Apple fanboys try to deffend this BS move.
- freshgrease, on 10/25/2009, -0/+6It MUST be true because Apple told me it themselves, and they make the damn things. Right?
- inactive, on 10/25/2009, -2/+8So someone else can't, because they already did. And if you get there first. You win.
- stubear, on 10/25/2009, -1/+7I wonder if this might be a preemptive strike against the Google OS? How does Google make their money? If they release an OS how are they going to earn a profit from it? They will have to wait until the Apple patent expires or try to prove they were working on this all along. Either way, the Google OS is now in jeopardy, assuming this was the intent all along.
- brewno2k, on 10/25/2009, -0/+5Maybe Apple registered it so nobody would ever use it. Maybe they did a good thing, did you think about that?
- MonkeyFarts, on 10/25/2009, -0/+5"Norman...I have a tip for you...with your maturity, don't worry about the word gay. You will never have the option of being gay or not. Both sexes will avoid you.
Holy ***** *****? Are you seriously 37 years old? That may be the most saddest thing I have ever heard."
Wow, that was REALLY mature. What a hypocritical moron. - candorny, on 10/25/2009, -2/+7No..it means that Microsoft can't do it the same way that is specified in the final patent revision that gets approved.
- stonechitlin, on 10/25/2009, -1/+6digg user saying digg users dont know anything. so therefor we can all happily ignore your useless comment that contributes nothing to me laughing or being further educated about the issue at hand.
- GorfTron, on 10/25/2009, -1/+6What is it about mother jokes that fascinates prepubescent boys and low ranking military? And why am I fascinated by prepubescent boys and low ranking military?
- TheSabre, on 10/25/2009, -2/+6It sounds to me like the use of Microsoft Office in this context is from the vantage point of Apple telling the user of a non-Apple application on Mac that they are being forced to sit through an ad first. It's a dig at Apple, not Microsoft.
- CanIGetAWitness, on 10/25/2009, -2/+6I feel I need to thank you based on the comments I made recently about making money with Apple stock, so...
Thank You and a digg. - TheBlueVulcan, on 10/25/2009, -13/+17I thought you had to be 13 or over to make a Digg account?
- inactive, on 10/25/2009, -0/+4More than I love my own children. :)
- norman619, on 10/25/2009, -6/+10candorny:
No what I notice is reactions like yours show people who are WAY to sensitive and can't see or accept that the meaning sof words change. We can also say your reaction to the use of the word in this context gives us a peek into YOUR immaturity.
Oh, it would be fantastic if you stopped projecting so much. - Rockkybox, on 10/25/2009, -0/+4To be fair, it is absolute genius, best mac only game I know of anyway
- inactive, on 10/25/2009, -6/+10Trolled with just one word. I applaud you muzza001, well played sir. Well Played.
