- inactive, on 01/08/2008, -0/+79the processors didn't even officially exist until yesterday, man
- Kragnerac, on 01/08/2008, -6/+6332GB of RAM, PCI Express 2.0, 8800 GT, Quadro FX 5600 (1.5GB of memory!), 12MB L2 per processor, 4TB memory... How can one handle such power? Just beautiful.
- arbulus, on 01/08/2008, -1/+54yours for the low low price of $13,000.
- WayneBop, on 01/08/2008, -1/+52I think you all have overlooked something here. If Apple is releasing this AHEAD of Macworld, that indicates that they have so much secret stuff to talk about they don't want to waste time on something small like this. That Macbook Mini is going to be amazing!
- DeFex, on 01/08/2008, -2/+49"The new Mac Pro is the fastest Mac we've ever made,"
lol. dont they say that every single time.
what are they going to do, release a slower one? - jxself, on 01/08/2008, -2/+42Hmm. I was expecting Apple to hold all announcements until next Tuesday. See you at Macworld!
- gizzymo, on 01/08/2008, -0/+40well the fact that they are not waiting until macworld, shows that they have other announcements that they consider far more important...
- MBX1, on 01/08/2008, -2/+36No blu-ray?
- cthellis, on 01/08/2008, -5/+35Well, since they put this out there in advance of MacWorld, they obviously didn't want to spend time on it during the keynote, which certainly fuels other speculation.
I can has prosumer tower, plz? - inactive, on 01/08/2008, -5/+35Buried as blogspam. Better link:
http://www.apple.com/macpro/ - freshyill, on 01/08/2008, -2/+28Releasing updates a week before MacWorld is unprecedented for Apple. This bodes well for next week's announcements. It means the keynote doesn't need filler, which is all stuff like this usually amounts to. Now I'm starting to get excited.
- cthellis, on 01/08/2008, -2/+27...and how can your wallet? ;-)
- Kragnerac, on 01/08/2008, -0/+22*4TB HD capacity
Sorry. :P - barnett25, on 01/08/2008, -0/+16...which means a busy (read: "exciting!") keynote.
- cthellis, on 01/08/2008, -0/+13...and not spend time during the keynote on it.
- bigsteve, on 01/08/2008, -0/+13"Here's a picture of me when I was younger.."
"Man, every picture of you is when you were younger!" - fluxboxuk, on 01/08/2008, -3/+16does this mean my old mac pro is hitting ebay.... Silly Question, im already filling out the listing form !
- maexus, on 01/08/2008, -0/+12I still love the look of the Mac Pros
- JamesMorris, on 01/08/2008, -2/+138800 is dead tech now, 9 series out in a few weeks.
- rspeed, on 01/08/2008, -0/+11Agreed. The aluminum cheese-grater is one of the designs I don't mind sticking around (especially when I remember what the G4s looked like).
- Karmavs, on 01/08/2008, -0/+11And here a was thinking it had 4 terabytes of RAM.
How could you. - inactive, on 01/08/2008, -4/+14Well last year they spent the entire keynote at MACworld on a stupid phone, so maybe they might have a new cooker for us.
- erekigitaa, on 01/08/2008, -1/+11"Prosumer" = "Professional + Consumer"
It's a commonly used term. - rspeed, on 01/08/2008, -1/+11Who dugg this comment down? That configuration is seriously that much money.
- rufo, on 01/08/2008, -0/+9I kind of want one just so I can have a ridiculous amount of power under my desk.
Still want a mid-range Mac tower (and who knows, now that the Mac Pro is $200 more expensive maybe that leaves more of a gap...) - maexus, on 01/08/2008, -0/+9This isn't a consumer or even a prosumer machine. It's designed with a professional's needs in mind.
- clockdist, on 01/08/2008, -0/+9yes
- maexus, on 01/08/2008, -0/+9Professional video editors would instantly come to mind.
- wyrdness, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8Yes, the iMac is quite an expensive machine, but they hold their value well. If you ebay it in 2 years time, you'll get a significant percentage of the purchase price back, making the total cost of ownership surprisingly low.
- totorototoro, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8They usually hold Xserve/Pro announcements for WWDC anyways...probably just wanted to take advantage of Intel's announcements at CES for these.
- bigjimslade, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8What the hell is beautiful about 4TB?
- nynety, on 01/08/2008, -0/+8Ever heard of Boot Camp?
- cthellis, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6...or porn on all eight.
- theskyman, on 01/08/2008, -0/+6The wholesale price of a single 2.8GHz Quad core Xeon processor is $745.00. Now, add the cost of the motherboard, RAM, video card, hard drive, Case w/power supply, CD drive and you are close to the retail price that Apple is charging. So stop complaining that the Mac Pro is expensive!!!
- vSanity, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5If you downgrade to a single Processor (One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (quad-core)), would their be an empty slot for another processor to be upgraded later (Buy a second one and install it yourself, save some $)?
- diggimator, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5Blu-ray adoption would probably happen much faster if Intel wasn't an HD DVD supporter.
- jayadelson, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5I'm definitely interested in this one. I have to admit, I still feel compelled to wait for Macworld, just because I have a paranoia that something else will change in the next week. Hmm... Why would I be paranoid? Maybe because I bought the Quad G5 a month before they announced Intel? Hmm....
- inactive, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5You can't. You cannot put an off the shelf Geforce card into a Mac Pro - it has to be a special Mac version and until today there were only three of them, all of which were ridiculously outdated. Apple would do very well if they got nVidia or ATi on board to support their computers by releasing a unified driver for OS X, but until that time you have to put up with pee wee Mac versions of the cards.
- mytimac, on 01/08/2008, -11/+16Dual Quad core is standard. But build to order allows a single quad core. WTF?
Now everyone is going to point at the fact that apples standard desktop system is way over-priced.
http://www.apple.com/macpro/specs.html
Why don't they just come out with a freaking desktop that fits in the product line between the iMac and the Mac Pro? Give me a Core duo with at least 2 expansion slots and I will be happy. Oh how I hate Steve Jobs and his "I don't care what the customer wants attitude". - jrlcopy, on 01/08/2008, -20/+25:) bout f'n time.
- Nar1117, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5The question is how can you handle 8 30-Inch Cinema Displays running off of the same Mac Pro? THAT is ridiculous.
- johnpaul191, on 01/08/2008, -0/+5well, nobody knows what is coming next week. i'm with you on that missing device, but i have been hoping for one for years. so are people like designers that need the power of the Pro, but not *all* the expansion options.
- tobsterius, on 01/08/2008, -1/+6Is Apple keeping with tradition and putting in a sub par stock video card? I don't know much about the Radeon HD 2600xt... can anyone shed some light on it?
- AZTriGuy, on 01/08/2008, -1/+6Well, the MacPro is for just that, professionals either in video, audio, or photographic editing. This thing is not meant for Joe Blow trying to play WoW or Crysis with everything turned up. For high-end video and audio editing and studio control, these machines are hard to beat.
The iMac is basically their consumer desktop machine. But I see your point on the price points, you always pay a premium to be an Apple fanboy :) - jordn, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4they have now included 8800GT's as a graphics option!
- ilgaz, on 01/08/2008, -2/+6I know a 3d graphics artist who will order it right away when 10.5.x becomes stable. On some projects he makes $10.000 per hour so for such high end jobs, buying a $11.000 Machine, plug it to $50k Xsan RAID may actually make you do more jobs with higher specs and it will pay for itself in a month or so.
- bbtweb, on 01/08/2008, -2/+6then update the card.
- DagMX, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4I wouldn't mind. You can never have enough screen real-estate
- falafelkiosken, on 01/08/2008, -1/+5They cannot release the Pros now if they haven't kept the best for MW...
- MacParrot, on 01/08/2008, -0/+4Well I think Umax's S900 with the possibility of two 604 processors is a real step forward.
Sorry, I was replying to a digg post from 1997. OH! There's a reply button now? -
