- borez, on 04/08/2009, -3/+101iRehab for him then.
- GoKings, on 04/09/2009, -11/+107Finally... I caught my MacBook sucking dick on the corner the other day. Glad it can finally get clean.
- seppuko, on 04/09/2009, -20/+75When Microsoft agreed to fix 360s that were well out of warranty, it was "GOOD MICROSOFT SHOULD DO THAT FOR MAKING ***** PRODUCTS."
But when Apple does it, it's "I respect them for standing behind their products." - Dan6963, on 04/09/2009, -6/+58And to think that you'd only expect the black MacBooks to have crack problems...!
- Urkel, on 04/09/2009, -3/+44Better late than never, but it would have been nicer if they acknowledged it back when the problem originally started 2 years ago. Their original stance was that this is the customers fault and Apple geniuses would either charge you for a new topcase (around $100) or send you home ready to punt a beagle.
Both of my Macbooks had this problem and it took several visits before I got a genius who would fix one of them for free. He said they weren't supposed to fix it so he couldn't authorize a new topcase for the 2nd one. - zerton, on 04/09/2009, -1/+30what does that even mean?
- t0ny, on 04/09/2009, -7/+35Well for one its minor cracking on the plastic case and the xbox 360 had a design problem the KILLED IT. Also just about any other computer maker would tell you to ***** off. I had a hard enough of a time getting Dell to replace the dead HDD in my two month old laptop.
- anubis2night, on 04/08/2009, -17/+44I may have many opinions of Apple but I do respect them for standing behind their products when they do the right thing. Good job guys
- Shiftyeyedgoat, on 04/09/2009, -3/+27At my work we use exclusively macs (imaging lab -- no flames please), and every single plastic macbook has terrible cracking where the lid comes down on the palmrest's edge. I'm glad we'll be able to get these fixed.
As for those who say it's a matter of "being gentle" with the books, that's simply untrue; it's a matter of closing the book normally and having a sharp, pointy plastic spike drop on a weak-point of the plastic bezel that is an immense design flaw and one of the driving forces for making both the MBP AND MB line out of the unibody aluminum.
Anyway, kudos to Apple for fixing this all around. - jikmo, on 04/09/2009, -2/+25Nice to hear. Everyone I know who owns a MacBook has had this problem.
Sadly though, I was hoping that this was about the White MacBook's drug problem... - spookyttws, on 04/09/2009, -4/+24I also have issues cutting crack on my white Macbook, it's hard to see the crystals.
- snagra, on 04/09/2009, -2/+20I was having a lot of reoccurring issues with my 2007 black Macbook. I of course had Applecare on it. It was a heat/fan issue, Apple tried to fix it twice by replacing the logic board among other things twice. Then I had to call them again b/c it was still happening, they then said they were willing to replace it with the top tier unibody Macbook. I started to make an issue about the missing firewire (which i needed for my speakers among other things). I was on the phone with a tech guy, he said he couldn't do anything, but he put me through to Customer Relations and she said that if it would turn my Apple experience around then she would authorize a FREE upgrade to a brand new 15 in Macbook Pro. She even sent me a check for compensation for how much was left on my Applecare b/c it would run out before my one year warranty would on the new laptop. I will never hesitate to buy Applecare. They actually cared so much about the experience of just one customer that they were willing to replace my 2 1/2 yr old black Macbook with a brand spankin' new Macbook Pro for free. I'm sorry but I have not come across another company willing to do that.
- Rivetgeek, on 04/09/2009, -7/+25only apple would call a helpdesk monkey a "genius"
- peestandingup, on 04/09/2009, -2/+19-Bought my MacBook in June of 2006.
-Plastic started hairline cracking around a screw on the bottom case in Jan 2007
-Apple acknowledges problem with cracking in April 2009
Thats a problem. - redgiemental, on 04/08/2009, -7/+23hmmmmmm may have to take advantage of this. Was going to basically ignore them as it really only cosmetic but if they'll do it for free I may as well get it done.
It'll look brand new with a new case!
I know other manufacturer might not do this and I respect Apple for doing it. - t0ny, on 04/09/2009, -5/+21"wow ask sony or HP if they will do that lol."
Ok, but I'll need a credit card number when I call them. - EllimistX, on 04/09/2009, -1/+16I've had the crack on the topcase twice, but it was replaced under warranty. The external hairline cracks were replaced under warranty on a separate trip as well, so my Macbook looks brand new. I will say this for Apple: they're speedy. I called on a Monday afternoon, had a mail-in box tuesday morning, they fixed it on wednesday, and It was in my hands Thursday at 10am.
- tama00, on 04/09/2009, -8/+22"and will actually fix it, regardless of your warranty."
wow ask sony or HP if they will do that lol. - Macintoshreader, on 04/09/2009, -5/+19The Xbox 360 RROD was a mayor issue. Microsoft had to do something about it or they'd risk a class-action lawsuit—which they eventually did get. Apple could've opted for not doing it, and most people that have had that problem don't care much about it.
This is a minor cosmetic issue; the Xbox 360 had a mayor hardware issue. Not the same. - zerton, on 04/09/2009, -2/+15when I worked for Apple we gave so much ***** away for free I started fearing for the company! They really are a kind company regardless what the haters say.
- mklopez, on 04/09/2009, -0/+11They just said no, no, no
- itsbob, on 04/09/2009, -0/+9He's coming out on Digg
- EGOvoruhk, on 04/09/2009, -2/+11But how long did it take Apple to finally do the "right thing"?
- smoger, on 04/09/2009, -0/+9oh boy.. lets all praise Apple because they've recognized a massive problem thats been going on for 3 years.
- AmishMack, on 04/09/2009, -0/+9only reason I read the comments was to see how long it took for that joke to appear.
- computershack, on 04/09/2009, -3/+11It ***** took them long enough.
- VeritasAequitas, on 04/09/2009, -3/+11@ SteveMax.
Apple did acknowledge that problem and replaced all logic boards in that series for free. I know this because it happened to my iBook. The college I was at had several thousand of those iBooks you are talking about. Soo what did apple do? well before we even reported the problem they shipped us enough logic boards to replace them whenever needed and paid for the on site repair guy and made sure we had loaner laptops on hand so that people wouldn't be w/o a machine while theirs was in repair. Most were repaired before an issue ever came up. We were also in the G3 era issue too. Same deal.
On the other hand my old room mate had one 360 RROD before Microsoft started taking care of the issue (he threw the receipt away by accident), bought a second one and that one RROD'd too then he got that one replaced, of course he had already paid for two by that point in time. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7oh geez i saw that coming a mile away.
- MonsterRayn, on 04/09/2009, -1/+8What? Replace a computer case that has minor cosmetic cracks in it? Okay, here's several, from personal/family experiences:
Dell
Gateway
Acer
HP (I had a friggin' chopped off piece of the paper tray panel snap off probably during shipment to the store), I opened up the brand new sealed box, to find that mess. They either wanted me to pay $225 (for a $300 p/s/c/f) or buy a new one.
Sony
I've only found two that WOULD do something like this. Apple, and Western Digital (4-5 cracks in the cover of a 2 year old USB hard drive).
I get that you hate Apple. That's fine. But don't act like every other manufacturer out there is willing to go out of their way to help consumers in need. Most generally seem to think of the consumer as a lying scumbag who's trying to get something for nothing. - inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7except they haven't. a few anecdotal evidence cases where people bitched until they gave in is not hte same as Apple doingthis widescale.
- Rsulliv1, on 04/09/2009, -1/+7my vaio's hinge covers separated and now snap each time I open the laptop. Can you give me the number to the sony rep that's fixing them for free? I can't seem to get them to do it using the normal channels.
But, alas, I bet you don't have proof of your claim... I really wish you did have a fix for my case. - POLARBEARjezuz, on 04/09/2009, -4/+10Yay for headlines that allow for clever, witty comments!
- NoSalt, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6So, does that make white MacBooks ... "crackers"???
- SteveMax, on 04/09/2009, -6/+12My iBook G4 is in a series that had a notorious motherboard issue. One chip's contacts would go bad after some time of regular use; when that happens, the screen goes black, the fans go full speed and nothing on the computer works. It's bricked.
Apple never acknowledged that. It happened to mine last year, and the only way to fix it was opening the laptop and (I kid you not) putting a lot of paper over the chip to make pressure on it and keep it in contact. There is now a bump on the back of the computer, which made some cracks on it; but it works. The problem is addressed, for example, here: http://www.coreyarnold.org/ibook/
To Apple, that early series doesn't have a problem; despite people reporting it all the time. The problem is worse than the RROD, it WILL happen to all computers of that series at some point. They fixed it on newer models, but never acknowledged it existed and never proposed any fix to it. Microsoft at least did something about it; Apple left all of us in the cold, and made us make our own solution.
I respect Microsoft for standing behind their product. Apple owns all iBook owners an apology and a fix. - Bombtempi, on 04/09/2009, -2/+8I've never had any problems with my laptop. Mind you it is a Dell...
- jakem1, on 04/09/2009, -1/+6Now we just need the fanboys to admit it.
- nthitz, on 04/09/2009, -1/+5My cracks below the trackpad are held together with tape right now. Glad to hear this is happening.
- m4dp1x3l, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4I opened this link fully expecting an Onion News Network video or article. I have been disappointed. =(
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4@MonsterRayn
My sister-in-law had a Dell and one of the hinges came apart. They refused to fix it, saying it was "wear and tear". She had to put a book underneath the left side of the laptop screen to keep it propped up.
However, my brother-in-law also had a dell laptop with a service plan. He had problems with his hard drive and dell sent someone over to his house to switch out the drive. I don't know what kind of service plan gives you that kind of service.
Point is, you're going to hear good and bad from every company. I've been partial to Apple for a few years now, but I'm not stupid. A company will generally try and get away with murder until it becomes too much of a PR nightmare for them. - yelow, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4At least all Dell has is a pot problem! You're getting some crack, dude!
- akeldama, on 04/09/2009, -2/+6But, but, but... I paid for: Superior Build Quality!
- phoomp, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4Only when the manufacturer places looks over durability in their choice of plastics.
- Hincapie, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4ive got those cracks too. they're not affecting anything, but i'd rather have it fixed than not.
- kevL0CK, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3don't say the F-word. you're just bringing matches to the gasoline fight.
- kd420, on 04/09/2009, -2/+5Really, I don't have a Mac or an Xbox, but that comparison is ridiculous. Minor cosmetic flaw vs. total unusable, severe hardware failure.
- Solkre, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3t0ny, I think he's talking about getting replacement parts. Most places will require a CC if the bad part is to be returned. If you don't return, they charge you for the extra part you just got.
I just did this with HP to get a new battery that died under warranty not 2 hours ago. - rogerworkman, on 04/12/2009, -0/+3me being dugg down just further proves my point. I suggest that there is more pc fanboys and people don't want to hear it. also I haven't ever been to starbucks because I don't drink coffee.
- EGOvoruhk, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4Uh, the haters aren't complaining about them being unkind. They're complaining about them being overpriced
- mdscinto, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3If only they acknowledged the hairline cracks on the iPhone 3G.....
- kewl4eva, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4Nd dont forget the self loosening hinges of Macbook Air!!!
