- wvaughan, on 05/23/2008, -0/+29Anyone else feel that these ideas are incredibly unimaginative, impractical, and downright lame?
- WaveRunningNakd, on 05/23/2008, -18/+46Windows Media Center kicks the ***** out of AppleTV.
Until that changes, this article is just wishful thinking. - tdishman, on 05/23/2008, -4/+23Someone should tell Apple that we're all going to be dead in 2013.
- BrendanSheehan, on 05/23/2008, -7/+19Anyone who thinks Apple is not going to make TV's is naive. I mean what in the heck.. Forrester Research who's job this is doubts it. Yet the same people see Apple going round to your house to fit an alarm clock radio and digital picture frame, just crazy. A digital picture frame that hangs on the wall and plays video is a TV you idiots. These guys are so stupid. Yeah, that'll make clock radios but they won't make the device for your home that fits in with Apple's company direction the best and costs the most. They'll make TV's, and you don't need research to come to that conclusion, a half a brain would tell you that.
- roxics, on 05/23/2008, -1/+13Where's the Apple iRack?
- DanBoodro, on 05/23/2008, -1/+10I'd have to agree with you there. Especially the beautiful jump they did from MCE 2005 to Vista's Media Center. Not saying I'm a Vista fan boy, but they did do a good job with Media Center on it. Gotta give em that. Apple TV just seems to lack functionality right now. Don't get me wrong, I love Apple as I do Microsoft. Maybe if they merged the Apple TV with the Mac Mini, that could serve consumers a bit more than a $200-$300 device for renting movies.
- MacParrot, on 05/23/2008, -0/+9Ever since the iPod was released, Apple has been moving ever so slowly into consumer electronics. Heck, they even dropped "Computers" from their name. The AppleTV isn't a bad device, it's just got some features crippled that make it so much less than it could be. A so far useless USB port (for diagnostics? are you kidding me?), the fact that you can't stream content from your iTunes accounts on other computers unless iTunes is running, a too small laptop-style hard drive (40 or 160GBs really isn't enough), the remote is too small and since it only works with the AppleTV, you must use at least one other to control other components.
What would make it a must-buy for me? An easy to program multi-functional remote through USB for all the different parts and pieces of a typical home entertainment center, a larger/faster hard drive, multiple HDMI inputs to add game systems, optical drives (DVD/BluRay), whatever. Most low-mid range HDTVs have at most just one or two HDMI ports and if you need more than that, you must get yet another box to interface them all with and yet another remote to control that.
Belkin and a few others sell USB programmable remotes, but it Apple could make the whole experience pain-free and easy to set up. Many people use Microsoft's Media Center (either XP or Vista) and it does work, but I doubt it's anything that someone besides video/audiophiles could easily set up.
Someone mentioned Apple making TV's. I just don't see it. It's highly competitive and the cost vs profit margins are becoming razor thin. Apple got away with it with the iPhone because they were able to partner with others for a share of the monthly fees and STILL charged an arm and a leg for it. I'm amazed at how many people bought it for such a premium. Anyway, I can't see many major TV makers wanting to partner up with Apple (and since Apple doesn't own any manf facilities, that's the only way they could make them) under those same kind of conditions.
There are other areas in consumer electronics that Apple could release products, but before we start talking about clock radios or iOvens, let's remember the last product they released with great fanfare that died (rightfully so) a painful death. The iPod HiFi speaker system.
Apple needs to be very careful over what products they release with their name on it. It only takes one really bad product to destroy a reputation. - campo, on 05/23/2008, -0/+6it takes an "expert" to spout off ideas like this? i should look into this job.
- inactive, on 05/23/2008, -1/+7Well, MythTV is better than both, seriously, but WMC is way better than the AppleTV. Apple is really restringing themselves with that product, they haven't woke up yet.
It's funny to see the fanboys digging you down. - mpatterson1, on 05/23/2008, -2/+7If a wall mounted monitor doesn't have or is not connected to a TV tuner and thus can't receive television signals, is it a TV? I think not. Any idiot knows that.
- DiggOrNotToDigg, on 05/23/2008, -5/+10I want some IOven
- skywake, on 05/23/2008, -0/+5like a digital music player, a multimedia box for your TV, touchscreens, making things white and preceding things with the letter i. Totally new ideas that had never been thought of before Apple.
- jspegele, on 05/23/2008, -0/+4What if nobody is home to watch it? What is it then?
- MISking, on 05/23/2008, -1/+5"An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on the company’s product plans."
You don't say. This article sucks, not even one credible lead to go on. - xkrwlng, on 05/24/2008, -0/+3i don't own a TV.
WHAT NOW, BITCHES? - dpcamp, on 05/23/2008, -0/+3right, because a huge beige colored case is very easy to find out in the PC world nowadays...
get your head out of your ass. its 2008, not 1998. - MacParrot, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2The best way to get better games on the Mac is to increase its market share. Games cost a lot of money to produce and if the base isn't there to buy it, then it won't happen. The Mac's consumer market share (the one that matters to game makers as you won't sell many copies of Crysis to the corporate world) has been on the rise for the last few years and it's beginning to make a difference. There are more games available now for the Mac (even if it's released later than their Windows counterparts) than ever.
In the meantime if I absolutely want to play a PC only game, I have either CrossOver Mac or VMWare Fusion with XP. - JasonCox, on 05/23/2008, -1/+3So I woke up this morning to my iPod and went to take an iShower but the iShower said I had to reactivate it in iTunes. I said ***** it and tried to use the iToilet but I think it crashed because the water was just spinning around. So I then went to make some breakfast in the iToaster and it wouldnt work because Apple had apparently had to deactivate it because of a lawsuit from NBC over the word 'Toaster'. That's when I had it, I went out and just bought the new Microsoft Connected Home line. They may crash every so often but they just work.
- DanBoodro, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2The only thing that's wrong with MythTV in the consumer's point of view, is it's too difficult to set up. I mean, yea you could easily read a tutorial and walk through it like nothing. But in my first experience with Media Center, I could set it up without any manuals, tutorials, etc. I'm sure it's the same with AppleTV.
Linux developers do a great job at developing for Linux users, but for a Windows or Apple user making the switch, it tends to be somewhat difficult to follow unless you've had a couple weeks really getting to know your way around. - jonshipman, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2Don't tell me that if you could sell a device for $1000 more by putting a logo on it you wouldn't do it.
I know I would :) - rompom7, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2Who would want a media center that doesn't do TV?
I download like 90% of the shows that I like to watch and watch them on my Vista Media Center (living in Australia sucks, we're like 2 weeks behind on all the good TV shows).. But I don't think I could manage without record, rewind, pause, fast forward live TV. - aliguana, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2ok, find the price of their largest monitor, and multiply it by at least 3. Thats how much an Apple Television would cost you. Can you afford one?
- bloominoctober, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2"The iRack looks unstable. I don't think it wants that stuff in there."
- iRelinquish, on 05/23/2008, -2/+4and XBMC pwns every other media center you guys listed! and its free and open source : )
- musicmanryan, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2If this is all Apple is doing five years from now, I will be extremely disappointed.
- aladrin, on 05/23/2008, -1/+3I bought my first tablet pc the other day. The ability to just touch buttons instead of using the pad or external mouse is really, really nice. I didn't think it'd matter to me, but it surprised me with how much better I like it. Mine also has a wacom digitizer, so it has the pen input as well. 95% of the time, I use my finger. I only pull out the pen to draw or write something. (I expect to draw more in the future.)
I seriously considered a modbook pro when they first came out, but the fact that it wasn't warranted by Apple was a serious drawback. Apple is a complete experience, and avoiding any part of it detracts from the whole. So I ended up with a tablet PC instead.
If Apple ever comes out with a table pc that's as good as the one I have or better, I'll probably upgrade. But it has to have both touchscreen and digitizer. Multi-touch would be a great bonus. - jspegele, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2Exactly. A television doesn't need television to be a television. Wait . . . what?
- skidooer, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2mdude85 does. That's who.
- cruppel, on 05/23/2008, -0/+2All I can say is no *****!! They've been in the news primarily for iPods for years. One of the first things they did in 2007 (before revealing the iPhone) was announcing that name change where they dropped the Computer from Apple Computer.
They have very clearly and unambiguously repositioned themselves into the consumer electronics space. - aliguana, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1IMO Apple should stop expanding their line, and concentrate on making their current range killer/musthave products. The "iPod built into cars" idea is fantastic, thats the kind of thinking they should be really pushing, not fridges and televisions.
- skidooer, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1"An easy to program multi-functional remote"
Known as the iPhone/iPod Touch. The hardware would make the perfect remote. It already has the radio. It will have the ability to install the remote control software specific to your device. All we need now is for remote controlled appliances to support remote control over WiFi. - postalblowfish7, on 05/23/2008, -1/+2this is the worst article ever on digg.
- aliguana, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1not just that, but going by their monitor models/prices, an Apple Television would be far to expensive for mere mortals. What, you mean I pay £3000 for the privilage of streaming 320x240 YouTube videos straight to my 50" Apple HD television? They'd sell about 100.
Apple have a good thing going with the AppleTV box, they just haven't got it right yet. And there is stiff competition in that area. They got a good thing going with the iPhone, and there is stiff competition in that area too (but they have the edge if you excuse the pun). But if Apple start taking on the likes of Sony in the television market... well, thats one fight they'd better be sure they can win, or it'll break them. - WaveRunningNakd, on 05/23/2008, -1/+2Typical *Nix-style delusions going on there. How exactly is MythTV better than WMC? I'll tell you how it's NOT better:
--> More complicated to set up and use
--> Doesn't support digital cable tv
--> No IPTV content
--> No major industry support
--> Doesn't run on Windows (you know, the most popular os in the world) - abandonedhero, on 05/23/2008, -1/+2With the new port of XBMC to Mac OS X, it's becoming a significant player in the Media Center area.
- iRelinquish, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1haha, have you tried XBMC for linux, or XBMC for mac or XBMC for windows?
- donna1234, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1The latest chatter is that company CEO Steve Jobs will reveal at a developer conference beginning June 9 a new version of the iPhone that can surf the Web over fast 3G wireless networks.

- jspegele, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1But they'll die rich after the tremendous Christmas 2012 sales. Whoever dies with the most toys wins, right?
- inactive, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1-->MythTV has IPTV support.
-->Who needs 'major industry support' when you have bittorrent?
-->Doesn't run on Windows (that's a feature my friend ;) - fantasticjon, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1I thought the ipod hifi was a cool, well-designed speaker system and I really wanted one. I just didn't $300 want one.
- KnoaWyls, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1I agree with MacParrot. So obviously Mac is already doing all it can right now to focus on what alucinor is suggesting and they are achieving this by trying to do all they can to continue and escalate their penetration of the computer market.
I also believe though, that this isn't the only most important thing they need to do. Obviously, the one other thing that Mac needs to keep their focus on is trying dominating the home users multi-media experience. The Apple TV is going to keep evolving if not give birth to a whole different product that will end up being the pinnacle of control and management of all multimedia content within a consumers home. - MacParrot, on 05/24/2008, -0/+1Good points.
1. You shouldn't have to hack something as common as a USB port
2. What if I don't want to buy a whole lot of movies from iTunes? I can get better resolution if I rip them myself at whatever file size works? Once you start getting into the 4-6GB range, that 160GB is going to disappear fast.
3. Streaming is always going to slower than local access
4. I've seen those and agree that they are badass! :)
5. I think you missed my point. I wasn't saying put a DVD/BluRay drive in the AppleTV, but have HDMI ports controlled by the AppleTV for whatever other audio/video devices you want to connect
6. By adding in a HDMI switcher, almost everything can be controlled either with or through FrontRow. Add the components you want to enhance and control your system.
7. I agree, but I wasn't actually comparing the two - mparker7410, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Personal computer, mobile phones ... to clock radios and digital picture frames? Apple probably has plans to push into the digital picture keychain as well.
- jonshipman, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1As John Titor has spoken.
- jonshipman, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1XBMC won't play h264 content @ 704x400.
The more you know. - iRelinquish, on 05/27/2008, -0/+1Well now XBMC stands for nothing. So your wrong.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1while some innovation in these areas are possible how much can you improve the wheel, i fear that they will make these products just because of their name make a big markup and fanboys will buy 1 per gen of each product
