- h3xley, on 08/05/2008, -3/+33How funny - everyone was dissing Apple's app distribution model, how dare they take 30% cut, they have far too much control etc. And here are the app makers probably making more in one day than most shareware authors get in a year by good will alone.
- willgonz, on 08/05/2008, -0/+27I wish I had Programming skills, drawing skills, and idea skills.
- craigyarnall, on 08/05/2008, -3/+29I'm becoming an App Store developer. Nao!
- deadbaby, on 08/05/2008, -0/+14Objective C
- Awspire, on 08/05/2008, -0/+11Exactly. Apple built the infrastructure making this possible for amateurs or professionals to profit, so their less than a third share is more than reasonable. Its a hell of a lot more enticing to build an app knowing you can make a few bucks off of it compared to some emoticon bows. I'm sure, now that the app store appears to be a success with a very promising reward, there will be many more apps to come.
- LoudMusic, on 08/05/2008, -2/+13iTunes Store has turned out to be something to behold. Apple needs to distribute software for desktop OS X the same way. It would be able to compete with the ease of Ubuntu (and Linux in general)'s Add / Remove software installer. Then have a universal update manager for all software installed on the system. Golden.
Ah, and to stay on topic, YES devs are making money on iPhone apps. If they write an app worth buying, price it right, people will buy it.
Obviously our economy doesn't suck, people, we're buying software for our PHONES. Someone just wants you to *think* the economy sucks, which creates a feedback loop and causes apparent suckiness in the economy. Stop thinking it sucks and it'll stop sucking! - greeniemeani, on 08/05/2008, -0/+112,000 a dollars a day for some stupid cell phone puzzle game? Wow!
- dmourati, on 08/05/2008, -0/+10Dugg your comment for "idea skills."
- uggidi, on 08/05/2008, -0/+10C, C++, Java? where should I start?
- DannyDriffs, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9Doubtful. Maybe Day 1 but there are about 4 or 5 light apps for free now that are heavily downloaded.
- BossKey, on 08/05/2008, -0/+8The economy does actually suck. The iPhone App Store is not a good sample of the whole economy.
The App Store succeeds because it targets the proven reserves of disposable income where they still exist in this economy. If you had the cash to buy an iPod touch, or the cash flow to both buy an iPhone and put up with the monthly iPhone charges, because you still have no problem buying food, $10 for an app is nuthin'. - inactive, on 08/05/2008, -1/+8C
http://cocoadevcentral.com/articles/000081.php - MattInChicago, on 08/05/2008, -0/+7Apple is making 800,000 phones a week or something like that. Doesn't take much!
- tomarocco, on 08/05/2008, -0/+7$2K a day is a bit more than paying some of the rent, Rowan. Broken down into a forty hour work week that's a half-million dollars per year and change.
- Awspire, on 08/05/2008, -0/+6Devs are probably just starting to see the potential of the app store, so the first apps will most likely be surprisingly simple, then once the potential is realized, I'm sure the apps will become more complex, and consumers will become more selective.
- tnoy, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5People that comfortably spend $200-$500 on a Phone and at minimum $60-70 a month for service are not in the group of people affected by a downturn in the economy.
- virtualball, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4No because I read the article...
- Rowan187, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4This is pretty cool news actually, its nice that some independent developers can make a quit useful (or useless) application for the iPhone, and potentially fund their next/bigger project, or even pay for some rent on their house/apartment. Good going Block!
- MrSane, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Objective C -- it's kinda odd if you're used to C++, but I really liked it after a few months use.
- mactarkus, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4For many of these apps, it is certainly money better spent than on ringtones.
- punkcat, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Assembly
- FreddieD, on 08/05/2008, -1/+5Nunchuk skills...
- bca102, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3Seems like bad math.
The $2k doesn't stop on weekends or holidays. If the sales keep coming at the same rate, which seems highly unlikely, her income from this app for one year would be over $700k. - Mizzike, on 08/05/2008, -1/+4And then of course there's always the cookie monster...
NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM... - MScrip, on 08/05/2008, -1/+4Mad Skillz!
- jkirk7msa, on 08/05/2008, -3/+6I'm so glad this got on Digg, it will definitely cause better/more quality applications in the App store.
- CynicalTyler, on 08/05/2008, -2/+5Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills.
- IWDA4, on 08/05/2008, -1/+4Anyone curious to who is this block?
- MrKite, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3How 'bout a strobe light? You can be "that guy" at the party.
- mrBitch, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2$200 a day for an app that just lights up an iPhone screen? That's it, man, I'm downloading that SDK...
- GarrettB, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3Objective-C and Cocoa
The rest are still all wrong. The hardest part is the syntax, once you get past that, you'll be fine. And the documentation is your friend. - supermanred, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Apple I am sure is working on the OS X software part of the iTunes store, that would be awesome.
- BrendanSheehan, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Objective C / Cocoa
- inactive, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3Not exactly. The only way to make money from a Facebook app is advertising, which to make any money you need to get tens of thousands of users every day. An iPhone app will make money just selling a couple dozen copies a day.
- rootfiend, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Ruby
- DivisibleByZero, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2No, I work with the guy who developed it. He still gets like 200 downloads a day.
- WiseWeasel, on 08/05/2008, -1/+2The difference here is that the devs are actually making money. Who's going to spend their money on a web app when there are a million free equivalents on other sites?
- BossKey, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Where did tnoy mention "people with jobs?" He did not.
He said "people that comfortably spend $200-$500 on a Phone and at minimum $60-70 a month for service."
The first set is not equal to the second! - ferrell, on 08/05/2008, -1/+2Tip calculator?
I have some bad news for you. - dericko, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1And just imagine all the time I wasted playing video games - I really should have been learning how to program better.
I could be like.. a programming God by now. - metapop, on 08/05/2008, -1/+2nah, i'm gonna make a flashlight app and sell it for $19.99... (little do they know it'll just be a white screen)
- BrendanSheehan, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1No, they can choose not to make money and sell them for free! :)
- robrohan, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Some
- GraemeThickins, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1how is this story a copy of the MacRumors story? they're both good...
what I find amazing is that, by most reports, there are still only about a
thousand apps up there to date
we're a developer with three apps so far on the App Store (doapp inc,
http://www.doapps.com), and we heard from Apple almost two weeks
ago that there were 4000 apps backed up awaiting their approval!
kee-rist, how many must there be by now?
hey, can we pick up the tempo a bit, Uncle Stevie? how about you
have Al Gore do something productive - he needs a job - tomarocco, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1The math is good, bca. We were just using different factors, my 5 days a week ($510,000) versus your 7 ($700,000). I did not compensate for holidays.
I doubt this boom will last long for this particular app. Sooner or later people figure out how to play solitaire for free. Who pays for porn anymore, right? - samimnot, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1The iTunes Store is definitely evolving, as they continue to add more and more features. Steve will have to change the name (to something more appropriate) in the near future. And I'm just hoping he doesn't include the team in charge of "MobileMe" in on that decision.
- rogerly, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Two things:
1. Data was attributed to the referenced website: http://9to5mac.com/iphone-apps-developers-rich (the same place that macrumors got their info)
2. There is also a information about Tap Tap Tap's data (as well as a reference to the website where it was obtained), which wasn't included in the macrumors post.
Perhaps Ars is guilty of posting this data a few days late, but it is difficult to say that they are copying someone else's article and claiming it as their own. If that was the case, then macrumors is guilty as well.
Honestly, how many websites out there legitimately get all their news direct these days? Most help aggregate news from around the web and present it to their users. And if they provide references to the places where they get their info, can you really complain? - supermanred, on 08/05/2008, -1/+2Sure they are. You think people that have jobs aren't affected by the economy?
- inactive, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1I just want to know who the f ck keeps this kind of ***** on their phone?
