- colincornaby, on 01/13/2009, -2/+31I'm one of the developers that works on NMobile, and it just ticks me off that people act this way. Sure, our app isn't free. But we give a better experience imo, and we ported Microsoft Virtual Earth to the iPhone (and we open sourced the code to the Virtual Earth port to iPhone/Mac OS X under the BSD license.) I like to think that we're giving back a lot to the community.
I'm sure the app isn't perfect (I know I'm fixing a lot of stuff for the 1.1 release which should be out shortly), but certainly this is over the top. I don't work for Njection/NMobile directly, I'm just a contractor, so I'm not going to point fingers, but it really annoys me that this is going on, and that Apple is not willing to do anything about it when they control the entire purchasing experience. - Borg7609, on 01/13/2009, -1/+21Trapster, grow up.
- ChromaVita, on 01/14/2009, -1/+13THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!
- Branchex, on 01/13/2009, -3/+13This is just petty, what happened winning by just making a better product and good marketing.
- regularsteven, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9did anyone think this wasn't happening?
- tault, on 01/13/2009, -2/+11App store wars begun they have.
- Professr, on 01/14/2009, -2/+11Begun, the app store wars have*
- CATSCEO2, on 01/14/2009, -1/+10You are either:
1) an actual Trapster shill,
2) NJection Moblie shill posing as a Trapster shill to get our sympathy, or
3) a very clever troll.
If 1 or 2, ***** YOU, and if 3, good job and keep up the good work. :) - techguru2006, on 01/13/2009, -2/+10End the developer on developer war!
- dOOBiEx213, on 01/13/2009, -1/+9Wow... I knew some of the positive reviews come from the developers themselves, but negative reviews for the competition? That's pretty low.
- shortshmu, on 01/13/2009, -6/+131. Create free app that copies an already existing one
2. Write bad reviews and trash existing one
3. ???
4. Profit!!!....(wait a minute.....) - SlipperyNipple, on 01/13/2009, -2/+8This is definitely petty.
- Murdats, on 01/13/2009, -1/+7it costs more.
- hooptydo, on 01/14/2009, -0/+6This really is a problem. I write software for a living and have some apps on the store. I won't mention the names so I don't get accused of spamming.
A competitor has three accounts they use to trash my apps and a the other competitors. (I am sure it is them, by reading the comments and looking and the commentators history is is easy to tell to real reviews from the bogus ones.) They even went as far as promoting their app in the negative reviews. No question this hurts sales. Reported to Apple, but they did nothing. - SlipperyNipple, on 01/14/2009, -2/+7............................................_

- ibeetle, on 01/14/2009, -1/+6This is why rating and comments are stupid and should be dropped. How is this any different than thousands of Kindle owners posting bogus 1 star reviews for Sony's eBook reader, or thousands of gamers getting upset at something an author said about gamers and descending upon her books, they have never read by the way, with 10's of thousands 1 star reviews.
Everyday I see 1 star reviews that start off with "I have never read this book..." or "I do not own this product..."
We used to laugh at the tin foil hat wearing crowd who wrote letters to the editor... why should product comments be any different. - ileftfark, on 01/14/2009, -0/+5@ CATSCEO2:
I'm not really all that clever (it was copied directly from the article). But thanks. At least you considered the option. I thought the over-the-top shillyness would be a giveaway. I thought wrong. - natenovs, on 01/14/2009, -1/+5wait, have you been reading the linux fanboys man page?
- AgentOgre, on 01/14/2009, -1/+5I hate "Trapster" just because of the unoriginal naming scheme. it is as bad as adding the letter "e" or the letter "i" to the beginning of whatever you are selling online. Their logo is cooler though, but that's not enough to compensate for the crappy name and douche bag marketing tactics.
- m0ng00se68, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4Gonna go buy nJection now and leave a review on what I think about Trapster
- mccarron, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3I didn't know you guys ported the Virtual Earth back to the iPhone and open sourced the port. Kudos for that!
Also great work on the app, it looks great and I just bought it. It was an idea I had earlier this year, just got backlogged with other projects since I wanted to do it right the first time.
The AppStore system in itself is a bit flawed, but here's hoping Apple does something to improve it in the future. - sssam, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3The Pull My Finger guys just released an expose of iFart Mobile's dirty tactics:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G8KBT2Z_kQ
Seeing as how iFart made over 100K in one month by gaming the system, I'd say this is a really big deal, and Apple needs to fix it asap. - chaoswings, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Because in those cases the customers are doing the damage. That`s different from developers posting bogus negative reviews on the software of competitors. I thought the difference was obvious.
By the way, please tell me, how we are supposed to find the good apps if there are no comments or ratings?
By download count? that is even easier to rig and does not necessarily reflect the usefulness of an app (especially if it is new).
Also how do you intend to stop ratings and comments on third party sites? If there are no ratings and comments in the app store people will go somewhere else to find them. At least this way they are all in one place and the developer and apple can keep an eye on them. It won't stop third party sites from posting their own reviews but the ones on the itunes store are more convenient and have greater legitimacy. - junkneo, on 01/14/2009, -2/+4iSpam

- jonthebishop, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1The video is private and it won't play.
- Professr, on 01/14/2009, -1/+2It ended when people stopped having any integrity, and decided to make a buck any way they could. People like them make me sick.
- jsynnott, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1Hint: Their.
- nebkiwi, on 01/14/2009, -3/+4Its a trapster!
- CDoug03, on 01/14/2009, -2/+3I AM THE TRAPSTER
- vassar, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1Njection has sour grapes in my opinion. Only 10 reviews? Come on guys!
- yabos, on 01/14/2009, -2/+3I don't know who started this whole kindergarden sand fight but I've heard the same things about the NJection people. One guy from Trapster was complaining about bogus reviews from NJection posted on the Trapster pages.
IMO they're both idiots and should grow up. Whoever started this is just as bad as the other one because they're both continuing this childish efight. - vassar, on 01/14/2009, -1/+2Having looked at the Trapster and Njection web sites for speed traps and cameras, I have found Trapster to be much more useful. njection charges for everything (while asking users for data). Trapster also asks for user data but has been free from the start and has a much better hit rate (at least in my area.)
I think Njection has sour grapes, first charging $10, then $5 and now 99 cents for their App while Trapster has been free from the start. Njection only has 10 reviews vs almost 200 for Trapster. Sure does not look like anyone is writing bad reviews for Njection to me. - sourmash, on 04/24/2009, -0/+1That's sad to see. We're writing honest reviews at http://appmodo.com because we're tired of seeing things like this.
- MOJIRA, on 01/14/2009, -2/+3I just keep praying that the App Store sucks long enough for me to get my mediocre app out there to make my quick buck.
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -0/+0Leave competing applications alone!
- ultrafez, on 01/14/2009, -1/+1Wine? I thought we were talking Apple here, not Linux?
- MOJIRA, on 01/14/2009, -2/+2Developers, developers, developers, developers.
- missingnoh4x, on 01/14/2009, -1/+1The sheer amount of problems with the App Store shows that we need some competition - a 3rd party source of apps would be lovely. Please, Apple, get rid of the god damn BSD jail.
- MacEnvy, on 01/14/2009, -2/+2"It ended when people stopped having any integrity"
Yeah, we should go back to the old days when people had integrity. You know, people like Hitler, Ivan the Terrible, Pol Pot, or if you want to keep going back in time, Ghengis Khan.
My point is that this mystical "old days" you speak of only ever existed in the minds of social conservatives. People are people, and we're fundamentally the same as we were 20,000 years ago. - sssam, on 01/15/2009, -0/+03. People reading reviews of popular app see negative reviews (written by competition) and buy competition's app instead.
Thought I'd help ya' out, there. - vassar, on 01/14/2009, -1/+1Trapster seems to have more data on speed traps and red light cameras in my area. What is the real evidence that Trapster would even bother with Njection (with its 10 reviews?)
- simplecoder, on 01/21/2009, -0/+0I don't, personally, believe that Apple will do much. It is not their focus - they create a _phenomenal_ platform, work out the hard technical details, etc. However, their web-based offerings have always left a little to be desired.
What's wrong with the App Store is that it was designed to sell music. Apps and tunes have extremely different models - different usage, different classification, different ratings, just plain different!
Seems to me that Apple would love to see a third party do something about this. Someone who can focus on building a stellar web application that makes shopping for apps fun and efficient. That allows Apple to stick to what they're good at, and let the rest evolve with other people's effort.
Anyone want to help me build it? - CozySar, on 01/17/2009, -0/+0Gee whiz. Sounds like MacUpdate.
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -1/+1The yuppies who go on Digg and boast about their brand new iPhone.. wow.. just hilarious.
- CozySar, on 01/17/2009, -0/+0Apple staff are too busy groping each other under their desks and licking glossies of Steve Jobs.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -1/+1"a 3rd party source of apps would be lovely"
Cydia? - Lockhart1, on 01/14/2009, -1/+0You're right. Trapstr would have been better.
