But if you actually take a look at the 1.3 billion phones that get sold, I'd prefer to have our software in 60% or 70% or 80% of them, than I would to have 2% or 3%, which is what Apple might get."

http://venturebeat.com/2009/05/20/iphone-market-sh ... - inactive, on 07/14/2009, -5/+261.5 billion is tremendous, but it's wrong to say "sold" when a huge, undisclosed number of those were free Apps that cost Apple money to make available.
- catachip, on 07/14/2009, -4/+23Congratulations on your ability to steal from others.
- Antialias, on 07/14/2009, -5/+18If you can't afford $0.99 cent apps then you surely can't afford an iPhone? Oh that's right, your parents pay for it.
- enantiodromia, on 07/15/2009, -1/+12as a Linux admin for over ten years now, and working in the middle of silicon valley, i have yet to see linux take over anything, except the server market.
- EH90, on 07/15/2009, -3/+14Funny how most diggers despise people that pirate iPhone apps, yet they think that pirating music and movies from TPB is ok.
- superkendall, on 07/14/2009, -2/+12There are many things in this universe you cannot even give away for free and find takers. The fact that so many apps have been acquired does have meaning, and a significant portion of those are paid apps.
- superkendall, on 07/14/2009, -7/+16You know what's great? As an app developer I don't care because I know losses to piracy are minimal in the grad scheme, while at the same time I can dismiss you as lowlife scum because you have no morals.
Your punishment is fitting though - you have to live being you every day. - KrayzieKyd, on 07/14/2009, -1/+9That is a lot of money, except that 1.5B also includes FREE apps.
Idiot. - schnikies79, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8With about 1% market share? Do explain. Linux could have 100% growth, which it wont, for the next year and it would still stand at only 2%.
- R1100S, on 07/14/2009, -4/+12Crow. It's what's for dinner.
- BxBoy, on 07/14/2009, -2/+9World Domination? There's an app for that.
- smashingmonkey, on 07/15/2009, -0/+6This isn't Apple announcing every 0.5 billion. This is Apple announcing 1.5 billion apps moved on the *one year anniversary of the app store*.
- Me1000, on 07/14/2009, -6/+12Sorry Royish, you're stealing revenue from people.
I have no problem pirating software from huge corporations that overcharge for their ***** software but it's hard to justify pirating a $1.99 app from a small independent developer.
I can make the argument that I never would have bought a $200 copy of [insert overpriced software here] but that same justification can't be made for an app that cost $2. a $2 app is an impulse buy. - BxBoy, on 07/14/2009, -3/+8There's really an app for EVERYTHING.
http://appft.com - MScrip, on 07/14/2009, -5/+10Even if it was 1.5 billion free apps... it's still pretty amazing.
When was the last time anyone downloaded a billion of anything over a measurable period of time?
It just proves that people have an insatiable appetite for apps, and Apple is right in the middle of it. - missingdigits, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5You do realize that developers get 70% of sales with zero overhead? yes of course you do, your just a ***** douchebag.
- Swift2, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4Hey, guys, musicians and authors would LOVE a deal where a publisher offered their wares for a 30% cut of what they sold. There's an awful lot of independents and small developers who have made a ton of money off the App Store. The prices are very reasonable. Imagine, about half free or .99, and many, many apps that cost under $5.00. And they're getting better and better.
- MacParrot, on 07/15/2009, -2/+6Oh well, if you're calling ***** then it must not be true
- KotoOni, on 07/14/2009, -4/+8Apple is taking over the world one app at a time.
- s0ny, on 07/15/2009, -1/+4Uhhhh, instead of clicking that "restore" button on every update, maybe you should try...you know...UPDATING.
Ive never had anything resync after an update unless I restored the whole OS for jailbreaking. Also once the apps are in iTunes it never redownloads them unless theres an update, but updates arent treated as sales. Do you get a little email from Apple with a list of every update you downloaded just like you do when you "purchase" free or paid for apps? Didnt think so.
Your just an idiot. - deevay, on 07/14/2009, -2/+5That's over 9000!
- RachelJTM, on 07/16/2009, -0/+3I worked for Apple a few years ago and one of my favorite things to do is convert PC users... Steve Jobs has created a machine of Apple lovers. I dont know of one person who has switched to Apple and didnt become completely obsessed with the brand. I would love Apple updates and news...suggestions welcome
- austinharding, on 07/15/2009, -1/+4tell me 'bout it. If I wasn't a customer they'd only have a billion downloads. I'm such a tool.
- RichardOMongler, on 07/15/2009, -2/+5This is Digg doublethink at work.
It's not like Apple is the middleman that occasionally abuses its control over content, right?
"It's only moral to pirate from organizations and companies I don't like, and only when the product is above MY price range."
Ha ha ha ha ha. - Royish, on 07/15/2009, -1/+4@Me1000
I did not say if I was for or against Apple App sharing or sharing any other type of media. That person did not steal revenue from that person because they may not have bought it in the 1st place.
I was pointing out that it is not stealing. Theft is when you take someone's property,
For Example:
If you took the Mona Lisa painting from the museum, you stole it and that is theft. If you made a copy of it and hung that up in your bathroom, that it is not stealing.
There is no saying that someone would have bought the $2 or the $200 app just because they downloaded it without buying it. Just like you think some $200 programs are ok to share without paying for them, some may feel that an app is not worth $2, or anything at all. - smashingmonkey, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3And a significant number of those free apps get ad-generated revenue.
- invincible2010, on 07/15/2009, -6/+8I find it amusing that when microsoft ships IE with windows, people, including lawmakers, complain that MS is using its position to its advantage. On the other hand, when apple, not only ships iphone osx with pre-installed features, but also controls what is ALLOWED to be installed on the iphone after the purchase, people don't notice.
- superkendall, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3I develop apps and I kind of agree with you on this one, except that it does show an acceleration of app purchases...
- Travelsonic, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3"I was pointing out that it is not stealing. Theft is when you take someone's property,"
I'll focus moreon the claim of revenue amongst those who claim that is what is being stolen: You can't take money away from somebody who doesn't have it yet. Not making $$ is not having it taken away from you. - Royish, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2For this case it takes bandwidth and your computer. That costs money too.
And again it is not stealing. That is not what file sharing is. - adeelarshad82, on 07/14/2009, -8/+10really??? so we're going to do this every 0.5 billion downloads. I mean yes 1 billion was a big deal but i think we should sleep on it until it hits atleast 5 bil now. I'll be more special that way!!!
- Travelsonic, on 07/15/2009, -2/+4Funny how you characterize those people who oppose pirating iPhone Apps and those who support TPB piracy.
Stop forcing a double-standard, Digg isn't one homogeneus blob of thought, just because some post X position on Y issue in topic Z doesn't mean they will in another related topic C take position C in post A. - Synchro, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2The fact that we are even talking about this "event" means they keep their buzz up. Which was the point.
- kelly, on 07/15/2009, -5/+7Maybe because they're not a horrible company, they have great software and because the mis-placed perceptions that have been cast upon this company for the last 20 years have been false

" .. If you just ran over your neighbors dog, and need to find a pet store, there’s an app for that." - mrBitch, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1RE: " .. Feels like I've downloaded and re-downloaded most of my apps 10 or 15 times."
Why would you need to re-download an app?
Once you download it once and it's synced to your iTunes library. From then on, you just click "sync" to re-install your (iTunes library) local copy of the app back into your iPhone or iPod Touch... - pooper0, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2yes you are.
- ThirdPrize, on 07/15/2009, -2/+3Of which 1.499 billion were looked at for two minutes before being uninstalled and forgotten about.
- merky1, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2I hate the App noise that the iPhone has generated. It's a lazy term used to avoid having to get into specifics like how many are net new installs vs. upgrades / re-downloads? Also missing would be a break down of how many of those are games and how many are location aware searches (restaurant finders and such).
- superkendall, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2I'm glad I'm not the person who has to clean your toilets.
- Nothlit, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Every time a new version of an app is released, you are prompted to download it. Some apps are updated pretty often. I'm sure I've downloaded new versions of some of my apps 10+ times because the authors keep releasing bug fixes and new features. And so Apple counts that as "10 apps downloaded" even though it was really only one.
- RyomaNagare, on 07/14/2009, -4/+5that's a lot of farts
- unboring, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1yes he is
- unboring, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1hur hur hur i dowload apps hur hur hur
- mrBitch, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1RE: " .. people are willing to go right along with assigning a different word to "programs" ..
I like replacing "programs" with "apps", it's way less typing, and "app" is a little more succinct, unlike a word like "program" which can have many meanings which have nothing to do with computer / phone software. - mrBitch, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2Zing!
- mrBitch, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1@ superkendall, RE: " .. Look around for a tethering file you download - you simply download it from the iPhone browser and it enables tethering without fuss."
You mean like this one?
http://www.benm.at/2009/06/13/helpbenmat/ - fbmx, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2I probably account for about 500 of those "sales". Feels like I've downloaded and re-downloaded most of my apps 10 or 15 times.
- superkendall, on 07/14/2009, -3/+4Look around for a tethering file you download - you simply download it from the iPhone browser and it enables tethering without fuss. Works fine, on AT&T.
MMS is coming later, though I still don't see why people use that instead of just emailing photos. -
