- Echidna, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20Erm... It ain't free... at least not yet.
For those of you wondering, it's a promo: Each blog that links to it decrements it's price. If 250 blogs post a link to their site, *then* it is free. As of this posting, it's still $12 bucks.
And, since I didn't know what it was: AppZapper is an uninstaller for the Mac.
It seems to be pretty pointless utility... Most apps (at least the good citizens) are completely self-contained... with the singular exception of a preferences file. It's not like some other OSes where almost every app completely spews all over the HD. - pzzq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15NOTE: This offer expires at 11:59 on April 03, 2006
- kwojniak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15It is true that most apps are self contained, but many don't have just a single preferences file. They also store related files in the Application Support folder. AppZapper looks in several places to find files that the app has created.
This is better than Windows' uninstaller because Windows' uninstaller only removes files that were installed, not files that were created later on by the program.
And no, you DO NOT need AppZapper to uninstall applications. Drag and drop to the trash if you want, but if you want to completely rid yourself of an application and all its settings, AppZapper is the way to go. - ajashton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10All this program does is basically automate the searching & destroying of leftover files - which isn't all that hard to do manually. (on a Mac, anyways..)
But it does make a very satisfying "zap" sound.
If 30 seconds of your time a neat sound is worth $12, this is the app for you! - unlived, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Or you could just spotlight an app and remove it that way......it's pretty easy on a Mac
- mardook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You could just use Spotlight, but a lot of the config files are buried deep in your system... This app just makes life a lot easier for Mac users. I've wanted to get it for a while, but it does seem a little ridiculous to pay $12 USD for an uninstaller. When it goes free, I'll definitely be downloading it.
Great idea on their part. - Perc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The application itself is a single file in the applications folder. Settings and stuff like that is stored in the Library folder in every user's own home directory. There's nothing wrong with just throwing the application file in the trash and be done with it, but some people want to remove every trace of programs they get rid of. AppZapper does it for you, saving you 20 seconds of manual spotlight searching :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9No. For the most part we just drag and drop a program to the recycle bin. Some programs spread out over the hard drive -- e.g. MS Office --with configuration, cache and library files. It's usually just a matter of cleaning out ~/Library and /Library once in a while.
- sert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6pretty brilliant marketing I must say, even if the actual product doesn't look all that special
With all those people linking to them it'll put their google pagerank through the roof - CatcherInTheWhy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Wow. You guys think different alright.
- zwei, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It's definitely not worth $13 to me, but it would make a great freeware app. Try it before you knock it though.
- Macintosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And what's great is that it'd probably work.
- jessed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Lest we not forget that OS X has a BSD backend with an X windows layer that works with Aqua so as in any version of an open source operating system, you can get open source programs to work on OS X. Also, it is possible to crack software on the OS X operating system. There are hex editors, resource editors, and disassemblers just like any other OS.
- miker71, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3DesInstaller has always been free, and uses package reciepts as the basis for uninstallation. The icon's not so good though.
http://macupdate.com/info.php/id/7511 - ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's about PageRank, of course... super ranking for them!
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2App Zapper is awesome!
I won my copy during MacWorld at macgrab.com
Sometimes I want to zap something to hear the sound it makes.. ZEEOOOOP! - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amplix...hhehehe...if you want to hear the zap anytime you'd like right-click on app-zapper
a finder window will open up and click on contents>Resources and all the way at the bottom is a file labeled Zap.aif make a copy of that file to your desktop and have fun all day. :) - katanna, on 10/12/2007, -2/+410 hours? It has only been going on for less than 7 hours, we still have more than 17 hours left! (I am assuming that it will end just before midnight tonight on the west coast and not noon... "NOTE: This offer expires at 11:59 on April 03, 2006")
Matthew - celebi23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4If everyone turned on the option to add this story to their blog (if they have one) we could get it free right now :) 424 diggs
- StatusQuoRules, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3damnn, I just bought it for $2.95 from there yesterday... worth it though :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The last version didn't ZAP Norton's AntiVirus monstrosity. Not particularly ZAP's fault, however it would have been nice if it nailed it successfully. Hopefully this version does the trick. Had to use the extract tool for NAV.
Ultimately, I blame my stupid self for putting such horrid software on my beautiful Mac. - weiran, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8A very interesting idea. Digg!
- Perc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@fredinator: "commercially"...?
You register most mac shareware - just like on windows - with a serial. - m1ss1ontomars, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2it does say PST, which means west coast
- msmyth, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4It's not going to happen, another 230 blogs to link in only about 10 hours?
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6did digg just kill it? i just got a database error when trying to refresh the page
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4thats why its on digg. i just added a link back on my blog. if people throw up a post it shouldn't take long. i don't see a problem with getting 259 blog posts in a day.
- moshisushi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hmm, too bad it's Tiger only.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3or you can just bury them. I dont think a few bad comments are going to "kill digg"
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what program do u open it with?
- cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Wow so many haters on Digg. Everyday this site becomes uglier and uglier to read. You are going to kill Digg.
- cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2When you toss an App there are support files in the Library. Mac has always had a preference folder and some other folders (extensions, Application support, Help, etc) where other files are located.
- disturbedgeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Since I have to leave for work I went ahead and got it for .65. DAMN! There goes my cup of coffee today!
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I paid $10 for Flip4Mac a couple of weeks before they released it for free to the public....
- DPowers08, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I went up to grab the credit card, planning to make the $0.65 purchase, but it said sold out for me as well. I just went back in my browser and clicked buy, and it took me to the page saying it was a success and to give my name and email to get the reg. code, which worked. This may work if you if you are out of luck.
- MicHalpin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1its already sold out!!!
- jdelamater, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Digg Effect after only 89 Diggs? That's not fair. How are we supposed to get the 259 posts listed? They should have anticipated a server overload with an offer like this. I'll just keep trying...
- brutan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1woohoo got mine for free!
click on the link down at the bottom!
"To get your registration for AppZapper, please visit this page."
If you registered a macZOT account they will email you a serial code. I created the account about 2 minutes before the 'SOLD OUT' sign went up, and retrieved my code by clicking on the link after the 'SOLD OUT' button was there. - kagayaki1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+211:59 AM or PM? It's not on the site...wish MacZot was clear.
Maybe this will inspire other software to try this model. I can see it now...Adobe CS2 free after 26,000 posts! - cyclotron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Its like Woot.com
- zwei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1now down to $3.05 ...looks like they are having to choke through them manually. A note at the bottom says they have a LOT of links to do. Looks like it will be free afterall!
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1as of right now it's totally free. and it works great.
- DPowers08, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you still haven't gotten it, try this link:
http://appzapper.com/az_blogzot.php
But hurry! - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Holy crap..they updated it...hahaha too little too late.....:P
- spangemonkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it's an alright app. better than just tossing the folder in the trash. I got it free during their litte game thing during MacWorld earlier this year. Got Menuet too. :)
Deffinately wouldn't pay for either one. - eihwaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Our goal is to give away 1,000 copies of AppZapper"
so, yes, they'll give away only 1000 copies. Right now the price is $0.65, and i think they have something around 6 hours left (I'm in Europe so i have a different time zone, it's already April 4th here). - lgc90, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Is there a limit to the number of copies that they can sell? (Do I have to worry about them selling out if I wait for it to hit $0.00?)
- w0ngbr4d, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0thanks, the link worked
- SlashNot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This pisses me off, i paid for this ***** 2 weeks ago and now maczot pulls this *****. But congrats to everyone else that didnt have it. cool for them. Get it while it lasts.
- eee340, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7This is sweet! Nice stuff.
