- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28http://www.microso... oh, trusted. Nevermind.
- danny5025, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I use a widget that does the same thing. No need for an app. Get it here
http://blog.gkaindl.com/downloads/app-update - metaquark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11If AppFresh doesn't know of a direct download link, it opens a webpage with the application's homepage for you to locate the download link. The ads belong to these webpages, but we're working to improve the situation. It's certainly not intended that ads appear on your desktop, sorry.
- richbradshaw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Is there anything like this for Windows?
I wish all operating systems would just use trusted repositories like Linux - it makes things so much simpler... - IceBurrg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11This may seriously be one of the best utilities I've ever used.
- yasirwisdom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7does it update itself?
/sarcasm - metaquark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7It seems our server is just as amazed by your interest as we are, so I've mirrored the application download at http://placebo.hpi.uni-potsdam.de/~jonas.witt/AppFresh-0.2.1.zip
- DonCarcharo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's still a very early version however it seems to work just fine. After installing it (basically dragging it to your applications folder) I fired it up and it did a cursory scan of my Applications. Out of 49 applications it found 6 updates and 24 apps that it could not discern (most of which were shareware or utilities or things like 'Epson Scan'). It separates the resulting apps nicely into lists where you can just click and an update is downloaded to your desktop.
Quite nice. - mikevickrocks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"I could live without the ads on my desktop that appear in the top left corner while this app is running."
Screenshot? I'm not getting any ads, you could be mistaken. - jackwaters, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9This app saves so much time......
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I saw this on TUAW yesterday, it's pretty nifty..
- danny5025, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5macparrot
And dont forget that there is a setting for automatic checks and growl support too :) - caldroun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6wow.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Quite right Danny. Another Dashboard Widget I find very useful along the same lines is the Widget Update Widget (hmm, probably found in the Department of Redundancy Department) which does for widgets what Application Update does for..umm...Applications.
Oddly enough, my reply to you is being dugg down while the "sorry wrong reply" in the next post is being dugg up. No accounting for taste I guess - willgonz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This app is cool. Also, it allows you to save previous versions for rolling back. This is a must have. It should be included with the OS.
Found it on Http://www.coolosxapps.net way before anyone else knew about it. - KooLLaiD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why not just use the AppUpdate Widget? Can be found at Dashboardwidgets.com
- ZOPTIKEREN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It also detect when the app itself can be upgraded.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3danny,
I've had that widget open in Dashboard ever since I found it some time last year. Once or twice a week I'll click it and then go back to my usual nonsense, checking it some 10-15 minutes later. That is probably one of the best and most useful widgets ever released. It will also search other folders for updates as well (though you have to point it in the right direction first).
If you're running 10.4 on your Mac, this is a must have widget. - terasurfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's the first thing i thought too, sure would have been ironic if it didn't :-)
- DriversPlaza, on 01/20/2009, -0/+1This one looks amazing ;)- http://www.techlookz.com/application-downloads/ thank you!!
- samster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks metaquark!
- datisit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah and if you click the A it minimizes using no space. Much better as a widget and it also uses growl!
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1CNET used to offer "oil change" or something for free and without any reason, they gave up. Bigfix, while it was focused on security/performance got bought out by Cisco and only cares about Enterprise now.
There is always versiontracker pro but it needs yearly subcription and because the windows other language exes are different from each other, if you don't use american english os, you get it trouble.
For system updates, Windows Update is way to go but the App updates should be done via own function. I don't recommend googling for such functionality and downloading first result because of obvious spyware reasons. - rtilford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ok this is ***** hot
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, and it looks like a throbbing penis while its checking for updates too
- CanuckMakem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FRAK the site is down
http://duggmirror.com/apple/AppFresh_Software_Update_for_the_rest_of_your_apps/ - metaquark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry if that sounded direct. Especially in this phase we're eager to hear your feedback. However, the "allegation" that AppFresh includes ads is FUD, no matter if you're concerned or not, and the thing I didn't like was that you just repeated what someone else claimed without having a look at it yourself.
But, to get back on topic and answer some of your questions: There is no privacy policy, as AppFresh does not communicate with our server (except for checking for AppFresh updates, but that doesn't transmit any information about your system) but checks each application's server. Who we are? We're three guys developing Mac software, and it's free because it's a development preview. We don't charge for beta software. And we try to not be evil. Really. - xqb4dpx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there was one like this for windows but its not developed anymore ... http://tomwans.pbwiki.com/caw
- dDeveloping, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1amazing
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've actually been thinking about writing an app like this for Windows. Just let application authors make an RSS feed, with each entry pointing directly to an MSI (and allow them to specify a tiny banner ad to help them pay for bandwidth).
Otherwise it'd be nice if MS let other vendors hook into BITS and have patches downloaded through Automatic Updates. - sneeka2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, Grüße an die Uni Potsdam, in meiner Heimatstadt! :-D
- tim7423, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1First ad I got was for the GraphicConverter. Update it and see it yourself.
- rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Already using it and it does the same thing. Takes you to the download page at MacUpdate and brings up the dialog box asking if you want to download. Very handy.
I do like the look of this application, but I feel it is long overdue for Apple to do this in OS X, so I will wait for Apple to implement (OR BUY) this product. - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bet this will be stock in Leopard. Wait for Leopard. I can wait.
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I won't use anything if a developer himself claims I am spreading a FUD as a concerned user, thank you.
I just said I am a bit confused. - metaquark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'll repeat: Those are not AppFresh's advertising banners, they are from webpages that AppFresh displays in order to download applications. Please stop spreading FUD if you haven't actually seen the application.
- genotrance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Check out AppSnap which does the same thing for Windows.
http://blog.genotrance.com/applications/appsnap/ - ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What is privacy policy, who are these people, why they offer such functionality for free, what about kernel extensions, frameworks? How will they convince thousands of developers who only cares about versiontracker/macupdate/apple downloads trio to update their listings? Remember there are developers who doesn't like their app listed in versiontracker on macupdate too.
Some gets impressed by finding iWeb update, it is already provided by Apple software update right under Apple menu.
I am not recommending a $$$/year service like versiontracker professional to single home machines BTW, it is not an issue. I am just a bit confused. I would be a little more confused if allegation that it shows an advertising banner is true. - djtzar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Windows Version : http://blog.genotrance.com/applications/appsnap/
does have a limited app list , but at least it's a start - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4sorry wrong reply
- macbwizard, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4I could live without the ads on my desktop that appear in the top left corner while this app is running.
- WiiH8PS3, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0great "app" for my "le"
