- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+57Microsoft makes software, they really don't care if people use it on Macs. Microsoft's entire business WORKS because they stay out of the dangerous hardware business, and lease software to companies. Apple computers running Windows = still a win for Windows.
Do you really think 97% of the people who see that ad are going to think, "Hey! That is a PPC laptop! Not an Intel! This is so totally fake!"
It's just a nice-looking, subtle laptop. Boring. - OutlawSamurai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33very slowly... with Virtual PC
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+34Your not smart enough to realize my point.
Microsoft doesn't care what hardware Windows runs on. It manufactures SOFTWARE. In fact, Windows running on a Mac is better because takes away more of OSX's market share. Microsoft doesn't HAVE to run on Dells. Microsoft advertises Microsoft, not Dell. They can use any computer they want, because most people aren't going to know the difference between PPC and Intel based Macs, or even the difference between an Apple MacBook Pro and a Dell Latitude.
Once again, they are selling *SOFTWARE* not *HARDWARE*. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26@laplacian Maybe you missed the first reply stating that the mac in the ad is a G4 powerbook
- KingLeo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29Looks like a G4 (MBP have a built-in camera). G4's don't run Windows as far as I know.
- dv8withn8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Why was this even posted?
"You'd think that they would use Windows machines for that, but I guess they're too ugly for advertising. :) "
Oh "Windows machines" huh? Well, this might bear some weight if Microsoft actually had their own line of PC's. Oh but wait, they sell software and the occasional peripheral.
Bottom line is, I bet no one at Microsoft who cares has actually seen this ad as it was probably created by some firm outside the company and the designer has stock photos of laptops and chose the Mac because it's an attractive design. It doesn't have an Apple logo anywhere so who cares?
I personally like Macs and use them but the elitism is getting both old and childish. - trogdoor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Anyone willing to run Vista in Virtual virtual PC is probably has a hobby of watching paint dry, it took me an hour to just to boot windows 95 in Virtual PC, good luck with Vista.
- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I don't think you understand: nobody who isn't a Mac zealot cares whether it's an old PPC Mac.
Normally I'm a grammar Nazi but his misspelling of "you're" is offset by his being absolutely right.
Seriously, stop complaining about it being the wrong type of mac and go outside. Talk to a woman. Move on. - theratster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14It doesn't NEED windows!!!
They are moving to using Windows Live Mail aka: HOTMAIL! Every web browser, firefox included can go to www.hotmail.com to access email that way.
Its meant to be directly competing with Google's current offering of Gmail for universities, which once again, doesn't require a downloaded program to work. - Guard, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Does it matter if the powerbook will run Windows? This isn't an ad for Vista or Windows, just some Windows Live @ edu software... possibly has a Mac version to it anyways, assuming that it isn't completely online-based.
- redlemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11did i miss something? i thought microsoft live was a bunch of services ms is offering online... and not an os.
i'm pretty sure that g4 can handle rendering webpages! - screwzluse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11To be fair, what's the big deal? Microsoft seems to have no issues with Windows on a Mac, so why would they care if there's a Mac in their Ad. Unless of course it was showing some of OSX.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Direct link: http://www.imagine-wl.com/Education/en-US/
I like how they overlapped text onto the computer image. - OldMacNeco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7wow the windows skin in the screenshot is ungodly ugly
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's probably deliberate, viral and successful every ***** time. Congratulations on doing Microsoft's work for them bois.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They're probably just using a clipart library and didn't pay attention to what kind of computer it was. No need to get one's bile rising.

PowerBook
or this picture: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/127/410513205_dd1bf6f760_o.jpg
Plus, the P7230 has a built-in camera, whereas the PowerBook does not. - thushan, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14meh no biggie... this is from an order we made from the Apple store...
http://img83.imageshack.us/my.php?image=appleuseswindowswo4.png
They use Windows boxes there (maybe for their accounting software?) - halbe, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12And that's an OLD PowerBook G4. It won't even run Windows.
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's the ugliest Firefox theme I've ever seen.
- richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Erm, Windows Live Mail runs in a browser? It'll work on any OS.
- Guard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4tehbear:
I doubt Microsoft is targeting Mac users in the ad even. Microsoft makes software. Thus, they are just using a plain-looking laptop (yes, it looks pretty plain, open macs tend to do so) so you focus on the image on the screen and the point of the ad (Windows Live or whatever). This news is kind of stupid, considering Microsoft has never developed PCs to my knowledge, only software. It's Mac's fault that Windows couldn't run on their laptops in the past.
If this was an advert for Vista on Dell's website or some other PC manufacturer, it'd be news. Next news will be someone posting the Microsoft screwup of Mac versions of Microsoft Office. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3BonEcho is the internal code name for the Firefox browser.
Only official Firefox releases can carry the Firefox trademark. If you build Firefox from scratch, or you download a test build, it will be branded as BonEcho. - salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Microsoft don't care, Apple compete with Microsoft, not the other way around. Small dog syndrome; the tiny dog has to make the most noise.
- blueigloo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What a freaking ugly Firefox theme. And Bon Echo? Get with the times man!
- antechinus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Unless you are a brand name oriented consumerist retard, who gives a flying ***** if a Mac appears in an advertisement or not.
- tehbear, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4GawtMilk hit it right on the head. If Microsoft gets Mac owners to buy a copy of their software, they are paying _full_ price for it. Sure, Microsoft gets money when Dell makes a sale and it ships with Vista but full retail price is even more money in their pockets. Especially if they buy something other than the basic home version.
- creativename5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I might just be a Mac fanboy that thinks that everything apple does is great, but how can someone put such a cheesy skin on OS X?
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That OLD Powerbook G4 (12") is a great computer and I hope I am not the only one who doesn't give ***** to running Windows on a Mac.
If you look close enough, that is the number 1 choice for musicians/DJs/studio staff/(on the move)DTP staff since it is very compact and has very nice battery life and has very quality parts.
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really? Sure? Windows Live mail will butcher your browser experience in any chance it got. They are even low enough to suggest Mac users to get latest IE which DOESN'T EXIST anymore.
I had a very serious issue with my Passport account and had to phone a trusted friend to fix it via Windows IE.
I'd understand Hotmail (It was nice before MSFT) but anyone who uses anything else than IE/Windows combination and get Live mail in 2007 is really looking for trouble. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I know, it's awful. That guy must've been abused as a child. An OS X skin that ugly is nothing if not a cry for help.
- monkeymagik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol it's like the isp i used to work for that provided NO support what-so-ever for Mac's (however this was only mention in fine print and Whirlpool forums), yet ALL of there advertising until very recently was very obviously Mac themed and used iMac's if a PC was ever displayed in an ad.
- ilgaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OS X users can afford Shapeshifter and use their own theme. I use Gershwix which roots to OS 9 Platinum times.
Apple wants a constinent, "neutral" desktop for Mac users. It is not "ugly", it is simple. - meshman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"You'd think that they would use Windows machines for that, but I guess they're too ugly for advertising."
Microsoft doesn't make "Windows Machines". - Radan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, it is most likely not Microsoft that has made the ad, but another company which Microsoft has hired to make the ad, and well as most of us know, the majority of those guys uses Macs, so they probably just took one of coworkers computer and took a photo of it.
- biff198, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes. SHID. Used in such forms as "I saw that picture, and I just SHIDed"
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone knows that today's hip college kids are Mac crazy, so it makes sense to connect university email with the PowerMac, especially when those students need to check their campus email via any web capable computer.
- Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It wouldn't surprise me if MS are doing this intentionally, this is the second add in two days that's had diggs full attention.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jeez, you'd think after all the articles and Diggs on this they'd use a generic laptop.
Something tells me they're taking the piss. - thelastdyingday, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the truth is microsoft owns around 40% of apple's stock in nasdaq.
- ytsohptwhere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its a 15 inch Powerbook G4.
Its too small to the its bigger brother the 17 inch and its also much too small to be its little brother the 12 inch.
Front slot load CD-ROM is a dead giveaway - laplacian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're right guys, I over-reacted about the whole ppc / intel thing. Someone should notify the FCC about this egregious false advertising. Also I saw a car ad where that particular version of the car performed a maneuver it could NEVER accomplish in real life. i'm going to digg that next, f'n idiots.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's an OS X theme, and yes, it is very ugly.
- nubnub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Windows runs on all i386 / x64 compatible computers. Which macs are now (intel macs via boot camp). OS X can now run (but not legally) on normal PCs also. To be honest OS X annoys the hell out of me and windows could be improved. Microsoft doesn't loose anything by having their OS being ran on a mac. People buy still buy the OS.
- wolfboyZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Horrible, HORRIBLE skin.
- dssstrkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BonEcho is the name of the current OS X Intel optimized Firefox (I liked Deer Park better; more history behind that name). Yes, it is a pretty ugly theme, but I like to give stuff a try for a while before I nuke it.
- avionix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes
- onimusha115, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't see what the big deal is. Macs are now just another hardware vendor as far as Microsoft is concerned, they aren't admitting defeat in any way since they do not compete in the hardware race. If anything Microsoft wants to get vista on macs as a way to edge out OSX or at least get mac users to dual boot. Pretty much if its able to run it, microsoft wants windows on it.
- dssstrkl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, there was this ***** preacher man causing a commotion on Friday, so I took some pictures, cause it was damn funny.
- kalidav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's called "stock photo".
