- hater2win, on 10/15/2008, -19/+219Spending more money than we have is what helped get this country into an economic crisis. We want things we can't afford and use credit to get it. I don't think sales will take a big hit because of this. If you are looking into a Mac, you are looking into a Mac. There is no back and forth comparing, trying to number crunch to see after tax what computer is more expensive, etc.
People in the market for a Mac either already have the money to buy one, saved up just enough to get one, or will get one by whatever means they can (typically credit cards).
The Apple demographic does not change at all because of the price. They have been at these price points for a very long time now. The people who bought one last year or were considering buying one last month are still in the price range they had imagined themselves in before.
People who want a Mac will get one, either because they can afford it or because they'll make sacrifices to get it (or not make a sacrifice and just use credit).
By the way, everybody is overlooking the fact that the front side bus is 1066 MHz and the RAM type is 1066 DDR3. It isn't just a body style update and swap to a glass screen. It is a very nice bump in specs, for the same price it was at yesterday. - kent1146, on 10/15/2008, -30/+213This article is incorrect, because Macs do not compete with other notebooks the way that Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, etc compete with each other.
Mac owners DO NOT think "I want a laptop with a 2.4Ghz CPU, 2GB of RAM, and a 320GB hard drive." People who buy Macs think "I want a Mac." - LANjackal, on 10/15/2008, -34/+188Small wonder. You can pick up a fully loaded HP laptop with BluRay playback and all for $300 less than the latest $1999 MBP.
- Meekers, on 10/15/2008, -26/+123I have a month old HP laptop:
- AMD Turion(TM) X2 Ultra Dual-Core Mobile Processor ZM-82 (2.2GHz)
- 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)
- 4GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)
- 256MB ATI Radeon(TM) HD 3450 Graphics
- FREE Upgrade to 260GB 5400RPM SATA
- 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN
Cost: $850...admittedly no blu-ray but is there any macbook that comes close to those stats for that price? - 1310nm, on 10/15/2008, -24/+102So you are admitting to being an irrational elitist?
- inactive, on 10/15/2008, -19/+95Mac fanboys will find a way to afford them, even if it involves selling organs
- dyranios2, on 10/15/2008, -5/+77During that Q3 conference call that these "product transitions" were mentioned, in the same call it was also stated that these products would be very aggressively priced. None of that appeared to happen today.
- smoger, on 10/15/2008, -4/+69you're right. who would want that? that totally justifies buying a computer that doesn't have it for more money.
/sarcasm - michaelphw, on 10/15/2008, -4/+60I want a new Macbook but I agree that they certainly aren't agressively priced. Especially when the special Apple UK tax gets dumped on it, bumping it to £949 ($1654).
- CaptMonkey, on 10/15/2008, -5/+57No, the article is correct. They do compete with other notebooks. They may not be competing for the "people who buy Macs" but they're competing for people like myself, who don't buy Macs but are looking into purchasing a new laptop.
If I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I'm not a "Mac guy" I'm comparing specs against specs, price against price, I don't care about brand name and trendiness. The argument is Apple could be insanely successful if they made their prices more reasonable. Just look at the iPod, it's a good product, and it's competitively priced. It might have an air of trendiness about it, but it doesn't need it. For the price, there just aren't many real alternatives. - WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -8/+52Did you just make the comparison between Mac-as-Raphael and HP-as-my-brother in law?? I totally respect your right to choose whatever hardware/software works for you, but give me a goddamn break with the moronic analogies. Surely you guys can do better than "my Mac is a BMW and your Windows PC is a Yugo."
- lennyp75, on 10/15/2008, -15/+58Why is everyone still debating over this? I've read at least 3000 comments over the last few days about people comparing Dells and HPs to the new MacBooks.... why can't you just enjoy the laptop you have and not constantly bash Mac users? We decide to pay the money for apple hardware because clearly we enjoy their products. We're not wasting our money, we know exactly what we're purchasing, just like you know what you're getting when you buy your HP/Dell.
Personally I've been using a PC until a bit over 2 years ago and have not had any interest of switching back since. It's funny how I read more about PC users trying to show off the specs of their cool new HP laptop yet they are the ones calling us fanboys? I come on here to read what other mac users have to say about apple stories, the same reason the PC users read about pc-related news. So do us all a favor... stop posting your ***** specs, and ***** off. - raydeen, on 10/15/2008, -5/+44Oh it's aggressive. Apple is aggressively attacking your wallet!
- daPhoenix, on 10/15/2008, -2/+39Everything is worth what the buyer is prepared to pay for it.
If the customers deem that the package in whole is worth the money - it's their prerogative. - phoomp, on 10/15/2008, -1/+38wow ... it's amazing how quickly you've adopted Steve's talking points. If Apple *did* include BluRay, you'd probably be praising them for how innovative they were.
- AndrewMoyer, on 10/15/2008, -4/+37I'd consider myself a "smart parson" as referenced above, and I have absolutely no problems with Vista. I've been using Windows since 3.1, but I also use every other OS under the sun, and I think at the end of the day, this is all just petty bickering.
Each OS has its strengths and weaknesses. Use accordingly. - warragul, on 10/15/2008, -58/+89I can't understand why people can't grasp the simple fact that if I wanted to buy a HP laptop I'd buy whatever it is that you have.
But I don't want to buy a HP laptop; I want to buy a MacBook. Your specs are irrelevant, as irrelevant as the color of the battery.
If I want to buy a painting by Raphael I'm not going to be interested in anything your brother-in-law (talented as he might be) has lashed up in his garage. Even if it was identical it is essentially different.
You see bikers with stickers that say "I'd rather push my Harley than ride that Jap crap". And when did a Harley ever win a race of any significance? - raydeen, on 10/15/2008, -20/+49But still way more than what anyone should be paying.
- vihung, on 10/15/2008, -14/+41Why have there been so many articles for so many years discussing how Apple is priced too high to compete with PCs. I have yet to see a single article discussing how BMW is priced too high to compete with Ford
- roodammy44, on 10/15/2008, -4/+28People ask their local resident geeks if they're getting ripped off for a laptop.
Macs in the last 2 years have slowly moved back into the "rip off" category. - darkphan, on 10/15/2008, -15/+38That HP laptop does not run my OS of choice though.
- KSUdesigner, on 10/15/2008, -4/+26I think the ploy they're trying to use now is that these same features (aluminum case, better graphics card, LED display) previously would've cost $700 more from Apple. Aggressively priced against other vendors? No. Aggressively priced against Apple's previous systems? Yep.
That said, I still think it's overpriced. If Apple wants to get serious about gaining major market share they need to come up with a sub $800 notebook. - warcin, on 10/15/2008, -26/+48Buried as inaccurate, this does not take into account the mac fanboy sheep mentality that is a major factor in Apple's business plan
- xsecretfiles, on 10/15/2008, -2/+24So, wanna come over to my place?
- Meekers, on 10/15/2008, -3/+25AMD puma system...when it is on battery it switches to integrated video...I get about 3 hours on a charge.
- npsken, on 10/15/2008, -4/+25Professional tools like garage band?
/sarcastic reference - joeycerone, on 10/15/2008, -6/+261280x800 on a 15.4" screen? yuck.
- rcarroll215, on 10/15/2008, -3/+23Paid $0 for OpenOffice...
- waspbr, on 10/15/2008, -12/+32you can always put linux on it for free
- dotorg, on 10/15/2008, -4/+24Plenty of people can afford that without buying on credit or sweating it at all even in this economic environment.
Perhaps a small slice of their market will disappear, but we're not talking about $150k cars here, we're talking about $1500 laptops. - Azerael, on 10/15/2008, -2/+21I sell other people's organs.
Mostly to churches. - roodammy44, on 10/15/2008, -2/+21And that's why they will stay a niche product.
When macbooks came out for the first time, everyone went out and got one (including me) because they were priced well for what hardware specs you got.
Now, they're a bit pricey again. And then you've got to think of the people whose 1st gens have fallen apart (like my one has, completely). - pentiumii, on 10/15/2008, -1/+20actually i am looking at sony viao now
and with every thing i want
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8400 (2.26GHz)
Microsoft® Windows Vista® Home Premium 64-bit
2 GB DDR2-SDRAM (DDR2-800, 1GBx2)
160 GB SATA Hard Disk Drive [5400 rpm]
DVD±R DL / DVD±RW / DVD-RAM Drive
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3650 with 512MB vRAM
LCD 16.4 1600x900
it is about 1099
and if i want to add a blu rays to it thats only be like another 100 bucks - theutopian, on 10/15/2008, -1/+20I don't think Apple will have a problem moving units because of price...
- peestandingup, on 10/15/2008, -0/+19We hear this everytime Apple brings out new products & everytime it fails to come true. Macs carry a premium & buyers know that.
Even with the hard times lately, Apple has still been increasing in sales. - edstate, on 10/15/2008, -3/+22Broken record here... but they need to release another 12"-or-under model. Pronto.
And the glassy screen was a misfire on this one, big time. - Haon, on 10/15/2008, -1/+19Its great for used sales. Im able to sell my year old macbook for an easy $1000 but its gonna suck if I want to buy another one.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/15/2008, -8/+25Ugh - please don't compare MBP's to the works of great classical artists. It makes you look like more of a douche than you intended.
- mgill3, on 10/15/2008, -6/+23But it's not a Mac.
And I don't mean that in a fanboyism way, but if somebody is thinking they want a Mac, they don't give a ***** about what HP or Dell you can get for whatever price, they. want. a. Mac. Period.
BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! COMPAQ PRESARIO 23580XXX2 FOR ONLY $12.23 ! (nobody will care!!) - hexcr03, on 10/15/2008, -6/+22If you cant afford it, dont EFFING buy it. Apple has always been a little more pricey, thats just how it is... the market has no bearing on the wonderful fan-boys (like myself lol). So if you only have 500 bucks, go buy one of those crappy PCs and spend more over the long run by having to run repairs, and worry about viruses.
- InorganicMatter, on 10/15/2008, -2/+18The people buying Macs aren't the ones being hit by the economy. Apple isn't stupid, they know this.
- doctordbx, on 10/15/2008, -2/+18***** it. I just bought one 10 minutes ago. I was due for a new one for work and was holding out. I'm satisfied... so far. (haven't got it yet mind you)
- smoger, on 10/15/2008, -5/+21doesn't apple's hardware typically only include something like 30 or 90 days of support? that's not much of a value add, and there's at least 2 competent free anti-virus solutions online.. not that there's a whole lot that can even get through on Vista without requiring a user to physically OK it(no different than installing a service on a mac)
- timalmond, on 10/15/2008, -2/+18what professional tools do you get on a Macbook? I thought they were consumer applications.
- Mavital, on 10/15/2008, -4/+18I've had a few issues with Vista that involved a few time intensive fixes. I have to add I am also running the 64 bit version, which has more issues due to driver compatibility than its 32-bit counterpart. After I got past a week or so of headache, I was really impressed with Vista.
It "feels" faster to me than XP. I'm especially impressed with the shorter boot times and the new graphical interface is a refreshing change after having to put up with the bland windows XP GUI for so long.
So long story short: +1 here for Vista. - Meekers, on 10/15/2008, -2/+16Paid 30 dollars for office student version which was included in that price but thats about it.
- theonlybradever, on 10/15/2008, -3/+17@ FredFredrickson
pricing themselves out of competition by charging more for better parts?
the laptop specs posted by Meekers are garbage.
the native resolution on the screen is terrible.
it's not LED backlit,
the processor is old and slower,
the ram is REALLY old and WAY slower compared to the macbooks
the videocard certainly isn't anything special,
and the hard drive is only 5400rpm.
the FSB is way slower than the macbook.
and finally, the case is likely cheap plastic.
then lets talk about the new glass trackpad with four-finger gesture support.
this is a ridiculous comparison. no wonder they're giving that laptop away for $800.
the macbooks and mbps slaughter that HP, unsurprisingly, they also cost more. -
