- dn11, on 02/03/2009, -5/+28can we get some freaking blu-ray on Mac yet?
- carl25, on 02/03/2009, -11/+30yay, welcome to 2 years ago
there is no goddamn reason macs couldn't have quads when they came out - Lynx34, on 02/03/2009, -0/+13Mac Pros have 8-core processors and have had them for a few years now.
- ThinkBox, on 02/03/2009, -1/+11More analysts....
Just the tech news cycle getting blue balls. - mcalica, on 02/03/2009, -5/+14Wow, so while iMac's get the quad-core intels, us PC owners have to suffer with those obselete core i7's? damn, sucks to be a PC owner, huh? I hope Apple makes me eat my sarcasm by releasing the iMac's with i7's...I would actually consider becoming a mac owner.
- peestandingup, on 02/03/2009, -0/+9Yeah right. Did you price quad processors 2 years ago?? And iMac is a consumer machine.
I'm not taking up for Apple, its just your comment is full of failure. - dandonia, on 02/03/2009, -0/+7Useless - sooo not the right word for the MacPro's.
- norman619, on 02/03/2009, -1/+8Why is this news? They are going with Intel processors. Mainstream hardware. Is it THAT much of a surprise they will be going with both since both are common in today's machines?
- tibbon, on 02/03/2009, -0/+6Since when have these analysts been right? I mean people keep making 'announcements' for apple, "new mac minis next week", "sub-notebook coming next week!", and they are wrong nonstop. Stop giving these losers credence.
- n3mi5y5, on 02/03/2009, -0/+5My roomate has this already... quadcore hackintosh... its quite the badass
- peterinjapan, on 02/03/2009, -1/+6I use Macs for my job, and they're really a joy -- just the fact of never having to run virus software is worth the small extra up-front cost, and there are many other benefits, including (surprise) happier workers. What I want is for them to make a damned mini tower, since I've got some giant G5's still in use for my staff, but I'm not willing to blow big money on pro towers for them just so they can do their email faster. Mac Mini or Mac Pro are the only choices if I want to use the monitor I've already got on my desk? Come on, Apple.
- rrijke, on 02/02/2009, -1/+6They better announce their choice soon, cause I'm planning on buying one. And we al HATE to buy some Apple stuff just to have it updated a few weeks later!
- aphex1112, on 02/03/2009, -0/+4I don't think we need an analyst to tell us this...!
- peestandingup, on 02/03/2009, -0/+4"the Q6600 was how much when it came out ? $400 at most ?"
Dude, that processor was like $900 when it came out. I'm just saying. Do some research before you make outlandish posts.
But you got some Diggs from the "its cool to hate on Apple no matter how accurate the info is" crew, so it's all good. - dn11, on 02/03/2009, -0/+4Mac Pro's have quads and dual quads.... the question is whether there is any reason that an average consumer actually needs a quad core beyond marketing hype. and the answer is still: not really. Give me a faster dual core over quad core any day. Perhaps that will change with Snow Leopard and with newer software. But as it is quad core is still over kill.
- BlatheringIdiot, on 02/03/2009, -1/+4No, Mac is going back to PPC.
- sturmgiest, on 02/03/2009, -7/+10except to make the iMac look pretty for all the mac fanboys they had to use slow mobile hardware.
- haiduz, on 02/03/2009, -5/+8Ah yes, mac users once again getting exciting at the potential of getting technology (quad-core CPUs in this case ) that was already avaliable for PCs for like more than a year.
- dandonia, on 02/03/2009, -0/+3What did he do to you?
- dandonia, on 02/03/2009, -1/+4Not to mention an OS that actually uses them and one on the way that will make even more use of them.
- sgtclydefr0g, on 02/03/2009, -1/+4buy one. they're less then any computer
- dn11, on 02/03/2009, -1/+4ah yes... because higher cost is always the first factor Apple and Mac users take into consideration. Why would I want to buy blu-ray from Best Buy anyway? Go check prices on Amazon and Ebay... I'll wait. Then go check prices for much lower quality digital downloads with no extra features on iTunes... I'll wait
- misbehavior, on 02/03/2009, -1/+3Other mac models have had quad-core CPUs for a long time.
- Billions, on 02/03/2009, -0/+2True! You can be one using any device that lets you type "pretentious dick," it seems
- TheNik, on 02/03/2009, -0/+2It's the iMac featuring a quad-core that gets people excited, not that it's an Apple computer. Mac Pros have had quad cores for a while and you can get two quad cores in one tower.
- chromerium, on 02/03/2009, -0/+2Pfft, since when have any analysts ever been right.
Its not much of a leap considering iMacs already have Core 2 Duo CPUs. - arbulus, on 02/03/2009, -0/+1You say "low cost of the OS" and "long life for the machine" like they're bad things. Apple machines last a long time. If you buy a well spec'd Mac, the speed and solidity of the hardware will last you for years. You could buy 2-3 Dells or HPs in the life of a Mac. I know people who are still using G4 PowerMacs (that's nearly 10 years of life out of that machine). So EVEN IF the cost were higher for a Mac (which in reality is isn't) then it would MORE than even out.
- disgruntledgoat, on 02/03/2009, -1/+2sigh.. that article nearly put me to sleep. Can't wait to be playing the next gen games on a core i7 with GTX280 when the prices drop in a year oh but I could buy that now for the price of one of those macs!
You mac ... guys just have to much money everyone I know who owns a mac has to much money and they should just give it to me instead. - KibibyteBrain, on 02/03/2009, -1/+2But you limit yourself by any choice. Its sort of ironic that you can't use Final Cut Pro to master a Blu-Ray work and then play the finished burn on the same computer.
- sgtclydefr0g, on 02/03/2009, -2/+3go to best buy and see how much it costs for a single blank blu-ray disc..... go ahead..........i'll wait............. give it a couple of years. it's not a technology that matters with any computer. if you're talking about pirating and burning. you might as well buy the movie itself. $20 PER BLANK DISC!!!!!!!
- inactive, on 02/03/2009, -0/+1If you think Apple would choose a blu-ray player before implementing similar technology through a digital download they could profit on....then *you* need some serious education.
- Pake, on 02/03/2009, -1/+2I wonder how much this analyst gets paid, because if this is the type of reporting he does, I'd be more than willing to produce double the "no *****" reports for half the pay.
- sexybobo, on 02/03/2009, -1/+2Why is it every time jobs leaves for a while they try to roll out 17 different computer models?
- poxonyou, on 02/03/2009, -1/+2iMacs and MacBooks are really falling quite behind. No Blu-Ray (playback, burning isn't standard in PCs yet because BR burners cost a fortune)., no HDMI, screen resolution is weak until you buy the monster 17" MBP that barely anyone can afford. Videocard in the MBP is weak until you get the most expensive model.
The 2 advantages Apple has are industrial design and OS X. If the PC makers could just get the design right for once (how hard could it be? no, glossing up the entire computer so it looks like it is covered in grease is not a good idea), I think it'd put more pressure on Apple and they would get their act together. Right now, they don't seem like they're worried so long as their market share hovers between 7 and 10%. I actually want a Mac so I can dual boot with OS X and Windows 7 with fewer problems than dual booting a Hackintosh install on my PC, but there's no way I'm paying $2000 for a MBP with features I can get in a PC laptop for $1300. - freshivore, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1Uhm, UNIX is child-safe? you sound like an idiot. Enjoy your system registry, because THAT was a good idea.
- disgruntledgoat, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1mmm but by that time what're we going to be paying on Hard drives? Discs are great for a quick burn and courier off-site for a bit of redundancy but if you're keeping the media on site you might as well be backing up everything to a dedicate NAS machine (not a cheap piece of ***** "NAS" in your local department store).
But totally agree the media will come down in price, but right now the standard DVD5's are doing well in this market. Hopefully bring about a drop in DVD9 prices though. - egthareal, on 02/03/2009, -0/+1I just priced out a quadcore hackintosh... About $1k for a pretty solid setup. Just scared about the "updates" etc.
- kilofox, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1Right... Vista is awesome!!!
- freshivore, on 02/04/2009, -0/+1Here's two...
1. Heat
2. Noise - dandonia, on 02/03/2009, -2/+3Why do you assume people want to get these disc's to pirate. Maybe we want to watch our movie collection on our PC's or perhaps we want to back up large amounts of data.
- Izacus, on 02/03/2009, -0/+1Of course there is. iMacs use laptop processors, not desktop ones. When those came out there were no quad-code laptop processors from Intel. Even know it's rather hard to get one.
- jakem1, on 02/03/2009, -0/+1Why can't they just have one version.
- dandonia, on 02/03/2009, -0/+1The sooner bluray is fuilly adopted by the industry the quicker the discs will drop to 2p per disc. If you go look at the spindles of 100 DVD's you can get for next to nothing - we would be able to buy 2.5TB stacks for next to nothing in a couple of years.
- haiduz, on 02/03/2009, -5/+5You know, you could just get blueray on the PC. Why limit yourself by an operating system?
- doctordbx, on 02/03/2009, -2/+2Windows NT+ has had SMP capabilities long before OSX was even invented.
Like OSX though, Windows still requires the software to be written to take care of it. If the software doesn't support SMP, there's ***** all the OS can do. - agentinfinite, on 02/03/2009, -1/+1I just want a new Macbook Pro...I mean an AFFORDABLE Macbook Pro
- carl25, on 02/03/2009, -4/+4the Q6600 was how much when it came out ? $400 at most ? it's $200 and soon to be RETIRED from production
imacs start at $1000 for utter crap specs you think $200 for one of the main parts of the computer is a big deal to apple ? - jaygeeze, on 02/03/2009, -2/+2Yeah, built a PC with quad core for under 1,500 - how much did your iMac cost?
