Analyst Predict: There’s a great future in iPhone apps
venturebeat.com — The $1.2 billion market size falls under Munster ’s “Agrressive Case” scenario in which there are 85 million iPhone and iPod Touch users through the end of next year, 95 percent of whom would need to actively use the store. Still, given that Apple has the device available in six countries right now but will have it in some 70 countries by next year

- digg it
- niro121, on 06/12/2008, -11/+9dont even mention.. this is the best.. want to get one..
- hamidrezan, on 06/12/2008, -15/+6Apple rules!
- buckchoris, on 06/12/2008, -24/+11Apple sucks .Windows mobile all the way woohoo.
- Steinr, on 06/12/2008, -7/+13There is already 4 or 5 apps that I would buy off the bat. Even that medical one they demoed at WWDC looks cool, I would even buy that just to learn more about the body and actually understand what they talk about in all those ER TV series.
Although reaching 85 million users seems like quite a tough goal to me. the app store though has much more potential than $1.2billion in my eyes.- locojones, on 06/12/2008, -6/+2Steve, is that you buddy???

- mikefitz2, on 06/12/2008, -17/+11I thought Digg didn't like closed source, paying for software on their devices? Why are so many of you so ***** excited? oh that's right, you turn a blind eye to anything negatively related to apple and their overpriced products.
- jeremedia, on 06/12/2008, -3/+10The software world is always going to consist of both open and closed source. Nobody rational thinks otherwise.
- jamesmcm, on 06/12/2008, -2/+9But the app store supports free software in that if you choose not to charge for your app, apple will distribute it free of charge across the app store.
- MacParrot, on 06/12/2008, -1/+4Do you ALWAYS follow what you believe most diggers want? And you're one of the ones calling Apple users sheep?
- jeremedia, on 06/12/2008, -11/+5The iPhone is the world's first easily pocketable, battery-operated device with a real operating system. The developer tools are excellent and free, and $99 will get you the keys to having your app in front of every possible customer.
People who don't understand what the iPhone is always talk about charging for "firmware" updates. Think of it this way: every time you install an update to your iPhone, you're really installing a new version of OS X iPhone, like wiping a desktop machine and doing a re-install.
Just one example of fun apps: I can't wait for the new version of Evolution RGB, an amazing "sand" game that was released for jailbroke iPhones. The author pulled the open source repos the day the App Store was announced, and I will buy a new version for anywhere up to $15. So much fun.- blackdude, on 06/12/2008, -3/+11"iPhone is the world's first easily pocketable, battery-operated device with a real operating system"
uhm.. no it's not.- Spuy767, on 06/12/2008, -1/+5Well, it really depends on how big your pockets are, but the OS on the iPhone is more full-fledged than anything I've seen on too many other phones.

- ToZaK, on 06/12/2008, -7/+4It took an analyst to tell you that... duh
- iizh, on 06/12/2008, -4/+12Uh.. I may be way off but most people seem to use their phones and mp3 players as just phones and mp3 players. 95% will "need" to use the store?
- jeremedia, on 06/12/2008, -10/+8You simply haven't yet used a "phone" that is actually a real computer.
The iPhone is a computer with a phone application. - sjmulder, on 06/12/2008, -1/+7The iPhone seems to me more inviting to people to use features. The step to tapping the AppStore icon is very small, especially considering how many free apps there will be.
- jeremedia, on 06/12/2008, -10/+8You simply haven't yet used a "phone" that is actually a real computer.
- mikefitz2, on 06/12/2008, -17/+11If MS did this with Zune most of you would fill this page with anti-Microsoft and anti-closed source, anti-pay-for software rants for the next six hours.
But when Apple does it it's "Cool" and "Hip" and makes you want to go jerk each other off in the Starbuck's bathroom in downtown San Francisco.- jeremedia, on 06/12/2008, -7/+10Why hasn't MS already done this with their Windows CE/Mobile devices?
iPhone customers are excited to have a sudden surge of additional functionality in their existing devices.
iPhone developers are excited to have a direct path to every single possible customer of their work.
Seriously, what is so hard to appreciate here?- mikefitz2, on 06/12/2008, -9/+6"Seriously, what is so hard to appreciate here?"
um, nothing.
Every time there is a topic about MS trying to legitimately capatalize on something it's given a negative spin. When Apple does the exact same thing, it's the greatest thing in the world and if you don't think so the WHY CAN'T YOU APPRECIATE WHAT APPLE DOES FOR IT'S CUSTOMERS.
It's hilarious, but then again I'm not the one buying into the hype and wasting my money on silly little gadgets just because my hipster friend's parents bought the latest iGadget last week.- McHoffa, on 06/12/2008, -2/+5apple isn't being closed and making you pay. They are making a direct avenue to get software, be it free or not. They are not charging developers to distribute free software, and they are going to test software before it gets to the user, preventing things from being developed that would crash your phone.
and i along with others i have talked to that have the iphone or ipod touch, got it because they used one and loved it. I admit a lot of people choose ipods because they are well known, name recognition, but other phones have been out for a long time and had better name recognition. it's the ease of use that makes the iphone great. microsoft tries to do too much sometimes and it makes it seem bloated... people want simple, easy to use software - MacParrot, on 06/12/2008, -1/+4Just get over yourself Mike. Not everyone drools over the latest Apple product and not every Apple users is vehemently opposed to Microsoft. I DON'T have an iPhone because it doesn't have everything I want in a device that costs that much money. I DO use Windows everyday at work and have no big issues with it. I DO have copies of MS Office for the Mac because I think it's pretty good software.
You're whining and sound like a little girl who didn't get a pony for her birthday.

- govsucks, on 06/12/2008, -1/+6A better question would be "why are MS users so GD bitter"
I compile for both OSX and Windows. Both are fine operating systems. However, If you haven't used the iphone or a multi touch mac, you simply don't know what you are missing. It is ***** amazing! Just the ability to be able to scroll in any window by placing two fingers on the pad instead of one is PATHETICALLY useful and intuitive. So you may be bitter with apple cause you think they are just a "Fad" but to me its all about ease of use and SOLID dependable functionality.

- edebolt, on 06/12/2008, -5/+2the question is will the likes of Rim, Palm and Nokia go to Linux driven phones in order to compete. At best they will be playing catchup. If they don't their market share might really take a hit. Even if they had a platform that allowed 3rd party apps then could they innovate like Apple?
- salmonmoose, on 06/12/2008, -0/+6It's called Android.
OSS and free. You can develop on anything and distribute however you like, you can even choose your hardware. - MacParrot, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3They already are developing new features to compete with the iPhone's ease of use. Whether they decide to use Android or make it themselves in house, the end result is easier to use phones from everyone.
Even if you hate Apple and will NEVER buy a product from them, you have them to thank for the latest efforts from the other cell players to make easier to use phones instead of just packing them with little used or difficult to acceess features.

- PeterBassett, on 06/12/2008, -2/+6This is probably a dumb question but
Do you need an apple computer to do dev for the iPhone?
I don't mind the $99 cost for startup, but I can't swing a mac and an iPhone on top of that.
I could do some cool dev for that platform.- KezG, on 06/12/2008, -0/+7As far as I know, yes, you need a Mac to develop for the iPhone.
You could get a used Mac Mini for cheap off eBay, or try to install OS X on your windows box.- LittleDas, on 06/12/2008, -2/+1seems pretty dumb to not have a windows option
developers, coders, tend to use windows machines what with the prevalence of visual studio
although, that's just in my experience- mrBitch, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1well, it's only as dumb as expecting ms visual studio to include the cocoa frameworks to allow you to develop os x & iphone apps under visual studio. ask microsoft if they will include that as a new include library in vs.
- LittleDas, on 06/12/2008, -2/+1seems pretty dumb to not have a windows option
- MacParrot, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2While you will need a Mac (or just some computer that will run OS X ahem OSX86 or Psystar), I think you can use the iPhone test app built into the SDK to try it out. No iPhone required
- tadpoleontheweb, on 06/12/2008, -0/+2The iPhone OS is essentially OS X. So really you're developing for a handheld Mac.
- mrBitch, on 06/18/2008, -0/+1correct, the iphone runs the full leopard os x kernel - but uses a different "touch" presentation manager instead of using the aqua gui which is what drives the desktop version of os x.
- KezG, on 06/12/2008, -0/+7As far as I know, yes, you need a Mac to develop for the iPhone.
- chrismag1979, on 06/12/2008, -11/+1OSX, Windows Mobile, they're all the same! SYMBIAN rule the world!
- doctordbx, on 06/12/2008, -5/+0That's a fact. Symbian is far and wide the most used phone OS.
It's like the Windows of the phone world, while the rest of the phone OS battle it out for the also ran market share.
- doctordbx, on 06/12/2008, -5/+0That's a fact. Symbian is far and wide the most used phone OS.

Apple have sold 6 million iPhones to date. Your projection of 85 million iPhones sold through the end of next year unreasonable.

a) it isn't my projection, rather it's Piper Paffray's Gene Munster
b) it isn't 85 million iPhones sold, it's 61 million, the rest are iPod Touches
It probably is unreasonable, but that is Munster's aggressive case scenario.
...
55M iPhones in 2 years. Sounds a little unreasonable to me...!- Spuy767, on 06/12/2008, -2/+1iPod Touch.

- govsucks, on 06/12/2008, -0/+3Right, we are already gearing up to work on some apps for the Iphone. The second they come out I will be ordering at least two for "cough" company testing :) From what I've seen it look like a fairly rich little sandbox to play in. We are excited about developing for it. We have a nice little list of application ideas and we're ready to get started. Plus it will be nice to ditch my MP3 player and cell phone and take this guy running with me. I hope they have some Otter Armor that will fit it soon so I don't destroy it the first day out. >:)

At least it is making me not to buy a iphone but wait a few months for some real cool phone stuff. And fortunately it is not limited to one phone company, so I am free to choose whatever I want. The figures provided just do not make any sense when compared to the real figures of all mobile phones and related products sold now , in the current real world we live in , including projections based on real information !
