Um, no. Without the Mac OS, it is a pretty machine without an operating system. - Kwasny, on 11/03/2007, -1/+24Why did anyone bother to type up such a long article for something so obvious?
- colincornaby, on 11/03/2007, -1/+11Don't forget, OS X now powers the iPod and iPhone. OS X is essential to more than just Apple's Mac strategy.
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -4/+13No, not like that.
- TurboBeard, on 11/03/2007, -5/+12How can anyone digg this? It's a terrible article about something that is completely obvious.
- colincornaby, on 11/03/2007, -0/+7Actually the iPhone does use pieces of Leopard, such as CoreAnimation. OS X and OS X "mobile" are also not analogous to WIndows and WIndows CE. Both versions use the exact same kernel, the same API's, the same user system, and so on...
- SublimeRuin, on 11/03/2007, -4/+9so 20 or so people out of 2 million have problems and the windows fan bois come out to declare Leopard and Apple Failures.....
- superkendall, on 11/03/2007, -0/+5The iPhone is a smaller version of the kernel that comes with OS X - many of the same frmewarks are in place. Why do you think the hacked iPhone apps were able to appear so quickly? People use the same development tools they do for OS X software, just with the addition of a custom library for the touch-screen stuff.
- bbardlbradd, on 11/03/2007, -0/+4More like a pretty Linux Machine. It's closer to Unix than .Net, lolz.
- KSUdesigner, on 11/02/2007, -0/+4Why? He'll retire LONG before he hits 120.
- MacParrot, on 11/03/2007, -0/+3Most of those iMac affected by the freezing issue started off with Tiger. Since Leopard just came out, where is your proof that so many are going back?
- bbardlbradd, on 11/03/2007, -0/+3Ha, I think, if he knew he were going to live that long, he'd stay with to company until he's 120. Steve is Apple's father, He brought the computer industry to the masses, and in great style. He seems to understand what people are looking for, but he's only human, working with a business machine. He will fault like a human, but the most important thing is that he cares about his company (more so than the money he receives from it), he cares about technology, and he understands it's link to society and people. He's always been a very business oriented philosopher with an interest in computer technology.
If you care to know more about him, read "iCon, The Greatest Second Act in the Histroy of Business" by Jeffery S. Young and William L. Simon. It's a biography, that I hope Jobs redoes himself. I understand that I don't know him, so I'm sort of blowing this out of my ass, but I'm basing this on this biography, his history and what he's doing now. - Nossie, on 11/03/2007, -2/+5OSX yes Leopard no... different interface yes
'osx' on the mobiles has more relation and code sharing than Windows has to Windows mobile (aka win CE) - rudy23, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2i wish he lives long too but after a certan point no matter how long he lives he is just gonna retire.
- specialkay, on 11/03/2007, -1/+3this article is horse ***** for beginning to end. I am pissed i actually wasted 4 minutes of my day humoring this dribble
- rudy23, on 11/02/2007, -0/+2you are being dugg down for the fanboyish comment but this point is soo true. so many people just want to get rid of vista from their new system and upgrade to XP ;) dont think its that big a ratio for apple.
- MacParrot, on 11/03/2007, -0/+2I call ***** on that. If half the people buying 10.5 (or having received it when buying a new Mac) were affected, it would be all over not just tech forums but the nightly news.
Some new C2D iMacs have had some problems including freezes and screen blurs related to probable graphics card issues. Not all, not 50%, probably well less than 5%. That doesn't excuse Apple from doing everything they can to correct it as they should. Evey single iMac owner with a problem related should expect and demand swift resolution to the issue.
Likewise, a lot of people have had problems installing Leopard. Most of the problems appear to be related to third-party utilities programs installed with Tiger. Again, not all, not 50%, probably less than 5%. Again, Apple needs to discover what the issue is and correct it without delay. If it is related to third-party software, it is also up to makers of that software to be involved. Instead of pointing fingers, get the problem fixed.
Your problem is that you are so blinded by hate that even if absolutely no issues were present, you would make them up. Neither I nor most (note I said most) Mac users here on Digg ever bother going to Microsoft posts and talk trash. Why? Because we don't care.
I use both systems everyday. Windows at work and Macs at home. I have absolutely no problem with Microsoft and transition between the two. I prefer MS Office for the Mac over most of the iWork (other than KeyNote which really does kick PowerPoint's ass) package and have said so here on Digg.
I have no problem with people calling out REAL issues with Apple products. What you do is obsessive bordering on disturbed. - darkism, on 11/04/2007, -2/+4If it's so important you would think they would have put some more time into the UI.
Don't get me wrong, I'm running Leopard and I love it, but I do miss the brightness and prettiness of Tiger over the dark, dank grittiness of Leopard. - danasghar, on 11/05/2007, -2/+3I checked out over90000 comments after you made this remark, and after going through the first 3 pages of his comments, maybe three articles had nothing to do with Apple and on one of those that had nothing to do with Apple he brought up Apple. I stoped after that...but jeez, for someone who hates Apple so much he's got a lot to say about them and only them.
- stmiller, on 11/03/2007, -0/+1Advertising profit.
- Numsy, on 11/03/2007, -1/+2LOL don't you ever get tired.
You are so sad. - Nossie, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1and when they break out of warranty your paying cost price to fix rather than the hike the OEMS add on to bother with you. Especially when each individual part has its own warranty of up to 3 or so years....
- Boondoggle, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Dual boot
- Numsy, on 11/03/2007, -1/+2Of course, they do say themself that they are a software company. :)
- xposiactionx, on 11/02/2007, -3/+4My 4 year old G5 is superior. Handles like a champ and always has. I have only had to restart the thing 3, maybe four times. Not a crash ever. So yeah, superior. In both aspects.
- srodolff, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1Is just about the same as Vista's Importance to Microsoft.
- futuretheory, on 11/03/2007, -0/+1The Mac still makes Apple more money than the ipod, itunes or iphone by far; and it was the the iMac that brought them back from the brink. Second, where do you think those things got their start? Mac users were using itunes and then the ipod over a year before offered to windows users. Built the product on a solid, loyal customer base before rolling out to a larger audience.
- bbardlbradd, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1I'm running leopard on this iBook G4, the only issue I have is Automator's rename string for Finder doesn't work, but this isn't hardware dependent, it doesn't work on any machine, it's just something that needs to be patched.
Beyond that, Leopard runs just like Tiger, but it's a resource whore and is much smoother... in most cases. I'm figuring in the fact that I'm running an OS which is geared more towards a dual core 64 bit machine, rather than a 3 year old consumer targeted notebook. I'm extremely impressed and completely happy. I understand, there are bugs, but I have faith in Apple to have them worked out before I get used to them . - FredFredrickson, on 11/02/2007, -1/+2I've never used an iMac that didn't freeze, crash, etc. constantly. That said, the G5's I've used have been mostly good (aside from the occasional "black screen of death" and mouse and font weirdness).
- bbardlbradd, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Apple, I think has more of a purpose in the Computer Industry. They kick started the industry, so it's highly unlikely that they'll ever drop computers, at least until they or anyone else come up w/ something far more practical in every sense (the future of computers, whatever that may be).
- smackit, on 11/04/2007, -0/+1Just made this, Might be of interest to leopard users
http://digg.com/software/Improved_SPACES_for_OSX_L ... - rockets, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1Unlikely...
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -2/+2If the thread is anything to go by then at least 50% of those two million are affected. You may claim "but people with problems are specifically attracted to those kinda polls and threads", but I will counter that with the fact that not everyone with the problems wants or has the time to go to forums.
- kgmurray, on 11/02/2007, -1/+1Our friends at Apple want $15 for the pleasure of installing Leopard on my machine. Thats on top of the $59 for the software. Thank goodness we don't have to pay in US funds.
- MacParrot, on 11/02/2007, -2/+2over90000 is overstating the problem (as he usually does), but the issue is affecting more than 20 people. I've installed it on my 933 G4 iBook and 2.16 iMac without any issues. Last two machines to try it on will be my kid's G5 iMac an old G4 Quicksilver tower just to see how well it plays there.
- fabioakita, on 11/03/2007, -2/+2For the miserable picky micro$oft guy, you're old news:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/applic ...
Ok, iMacs are perfect now. Check!
What else? - Nossie, on 11/03/2007, -3/+3except there is a patch out for that.... anyone that immediately upgrades an OS at release is asking for trouble
- inactive, on 11/03/2007, -2/+1Check the links I posted above. The update doesn't do anything to fix the freezes.
- inactive, on 11/08/2007, -6/+5A lot of people with freezing iMacs are downgrading to Tiger in hopes that it will solve their problem.
- RyeBrye, on 11/03/2007, -3/+2""We are not going to see users getting a new Mac and asking if they can downgrade like we saw with Vista users," said Jupiter Research's Gartenberg."
- You will if they are Java developers who need Java 1.6 - dragon76, on 11/03/2007, -2/+1To gain more market share the Mac OS needs to be more familiar to Windows user. That means having 17 ways to do one simple thing, having wizards for everything and then forcing people to go through the 5 minute wizard process just to tweak one setting, having NO wizards for complicated tasks and then putting in obscure settings that 99.99% of users will never understand let alone use but that in changing them causes a devastating effect, oh, and being easier to install malware on. I almost forgot: instead of fixing what's wrong, just put a new interface over it.
- FredFredrickson, on 11/05/2007, -5/+3I'm not buying it - Apple could close down it's computer division and just continue on with the iPod / music sales / iPhone businesses and would remain successful. Take away those things, however, and in all seriousness, the company would likely be bankrupt by now.
- chesscat, on 11/04/2007, -11/+9May Jobs live to 120.
- MrDo, on 11/03/2007, -4/+1Nah, the iPod is a dead end. Once the phone people manages to get the music part right and memory sizes get a bit bigger(to avoid a HD), I'd say that most people will only be carrying a phone.
- eaglejim2003, on 11/03/2007, -5/+2Open system: Made up of parts from different manufacturers so that, when you crash, each vendor can blame the others.
- rudy23, on 11/03/2007, -7/+2unless someone tells me otherwise other than the name the actual OS for the iphone and ipod has nothing in common with leopard.
- chesscat, on 11/02/2007, -9/+3"We are not going to see users getting a new Mac and asking if they can downgrade like we saw with Vista users," said Jupiter Research's Gartenberg.
Ha ha Windows sucks huge ones. LOL - inactive, on 11/03/2007, -14/+7iMacs are freezing left, right and center.

So much for Apple hardware and software being superior. - objectcode, on 11/03/2007, -15/+3kinda like windows is to MS
