- thefox84, on 01/09/2009, -1/+23Really tempted to get iWork, because Microsoft Office 2008 on Mac absolutely SUCKS.
- deadbaby, on 01/09/2009, -0/+16I was a lot more excited about iWork.com when I thought it had editing features. As a sharing system only it's a cool freebie but I would never pay for it.
- DavidTurnbull, on 01/09/2009, -0/+16Wait...you can't edit docs online?
- znicket, on 01/08/2009, -0/+10Am trying this out - as a sharing tool this is quite good. As a collaborative tool it is not enough.
- roxgod666, on 01/09/2009, -1/+9Office loads about 10x faster on a Windows machine. Well, this is just our little return present for ***** itunes.
- ncapone, on 01/09/2009, -2/+9Hey, the ability to email a .doc file without exporting is perfect for sending a paper to a professor.
- inajeep, on 01/09/2009, -0/+7No. I don't care who puts one out, Apple, Google or Microsoft. I don't think the concept is viable. I'm not interested in a fee based application especially for business or personal use. I already have a document management system at work that works across the intranet or internet if we wanted it to. I don't see business wanting to risk putting their documents out of their hands. I also don't see enough people needing to or wanting to share a spreadsheet with their pals very often enough to pay a fee.
- deadbaby, on 01/09/2009, -1/+8I would use Google Docs except:
1) The UI is really bad.
2) Lots of limitations in terms of sizes. (at least last time I tried it a few months ago)
3) The documents it produces just don't look very good. I think WordPerfect 5.1 produced nicer looking stuff.
4) Apparently Google has lost interest in it since they haven't done any significant updates in many months. - AceyS, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6God I know right? The ABSOLUTE WORST is when you are trying to use spaces and any office product at the same time. I know spaces is a LITTLE glitchy when using multiple windows from the same app, but with office, it is ridiculous.
- mcquitty, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5Damn, are you from the past? It's 2009 around here.
- GarmaZed, on 01/09/2009, -0/+5Sharing documents and live editing is already available at no cost with Google Docs. If they dropped the monthly cost, I'd consider it.
- mcquitty, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3My last company was one of the first companies to go with GMail for corporate email. There were some nice things and some things sucked. I actually liked the calendaring features, although it was harder for things like meeting rooms.
There were also some blackberry issues.
But overall, it wasn't horrible. Not getting "Your outlook mailbox is full" messages made it very nice for me. - chroko, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3After MobileMe, I have very low expectations for iWork. Besides from the IMAP mail and syncing, MobileMe is garbage. For example:
After being live for months, MobileMe still doesn't reliably remember login information. All the apps respond incredibly slowly (eg: if you're deleting mail there's a 5 second delay and you think you pressed the wrong button). And they all keep reloading the page when you're in the middle of something (eg: while you're adding a contact, it will refresh and forget the new entry). It's almost unusable.
Apple, please fix MobileMe first. - bjornski, on 01/09/2009, -0/+3Web-based e-mail is the way to go for personal use. Can't beat it. Corporate would have different needs, but most people don't need corporate level e-mail clients on their desktop.
And sharing documents you can't edit? Cripes, may as well send it as .JPG files. - chicagospur, on 01/09/2009, -3/+6Poor man's Sharepoint...?
- javaroast, on 01/09/2009, -1/+3Saw this in the article, "given a great desktop email client, nobody would choose to use webmail instead. " Didn't need to read the rest. Against my better judgment, I read further saw this, "The main thing that iWork doesn't yet do is support document editing" Lessen... always go with your first instinct.
- Atomic1fire, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2and you completely ignored zoho, which is aimed at small businesses, and it does other things besides office, also wins at having support for both yahoo and google accounts, anyway I think the concept of an online collaboration office IS viable, because in most cases, The people who want support, and to make sure that their documents are safe, would probably pay for a upgraded solution, since that guarantees that the business is more likely to not screw up, and be supported if something breaks, because unlike a commercial license based product (something run in your office, not online), Its not you screwing up, someone else gets their head chewed off, and they loose business which they don't want to happen.
and in the case of the larger solutions, like google/apple/microsoft,
They have a brand to keep, and a bad reputation could kill them. - OrangeSoda31, on 01/09/2009, -2/+4Microsoft hates you.
- uppedbyhiggins, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2Have you used Office 2004 for Mac OS X? 2008 looks like a godsend in comparison.
- bjornski, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2That's still lame as hell.
Don't worry, if they keep trying, they'll catch up to MS. - bjornski, on 01/09/2009, -0/+2It's also available for free on the MS Live services. The shared office and folders stuff is super-slick. I use it a lot.
- deadbaby, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2I timed it once. On an octo-core Mac with 4GB of RAM Excel took 13 seconds to open a document. Say what you will about iTunes, it isn't THAT bad.
- strykefive, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Buried, as this sounds like apple spamming/pimping its own stuff.
- mrtherapist, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Try openoffice.org, or neooffice.
They are not amazing, but it's more like office 2003 for all of its functions.
in all ways, I prefer iWork to Office 2008.
If you want amazing software with fewer limitations, try InDesign. It's pretty easy to use, but you might want to take a class first.
Seriously it's worth it though. - GregR, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Office (v 10.1.8) loads in 5 seconds on my MacPro Excel (v 10.1.9) loads in about 4 seconds. (and those are in Power PC code!)
- Nouman6, on 01/09/2009, -5/+6when I saw this on the keynote I thought 'now its perfect' easily some great upgrades.
- uppedbyhiggins, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Wasn't that *just* released? I'm not defending Office, but I've used past iWork iterations in a desperate attempt to rid myself of buggy word processing software (Open Office, Neo Office, Microsoft Office), but it never works out.
I guess what I'm saying is that I'll give iWork '09 a try, and I really hope it's great, but I've got a whole lot of skepticism set aside for Apple-related office suites. - znicket, on 01/09/2009, -1/+2you can't edit them online - iWork offers you to download the docs in a format of your choosing for your desktop editing leisure.
- wiihuck, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1"given a great desktop email client, nobody would choose to use webmail instead."
<--- nobody (gmail) - mrtherapist, on 01/11/2009, -0/+1Like it or not people still need office.
- beerbarron, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1or you could use dropbox... for file sharing
- cubs2234, on 01/09/2009, -0/+1Listen, I have iWork '09, and it's my current office suite. I used Office 2008 but it just became such a drag--not only on me but my system as well. For me the number one thing I love about iWork is the responsiveness and I don't think I'll ever go back.
- mcquitty, on 01/09/2009, -1/+1It might have been funnier if you stopped at Laid.. as in iGotLaid.
- jonsterling, on 01/09/2009, -2/+2OpenOffice sucks. Pages sucks. Numbers and Keynote are nice. Office 2008 is crashy and slow, and sucks.
- Macishman, on 01/09/2009, -0/+0Hmmm, I'm an Apple fan and an iWork user, but after trying iWork.com with 4 coworkers marking up a document, it seems more eye-candy than useful to me. Maybe the beta will grow up some, but in its current incarnation, I don't think I'd pay for this.
- Interestingness, on 01/10/2009, -1/+1Not sure why this is all the rage? iWork to hard for my cash to spend it on already-elsewhere-for-free service.
http://Twitter.com/WebMedia - jakereilly, on 01/09/2009, -3/+2Yes it is.
Hi, I'm iTunes! I can't scroll down a list of songs smoothly! Yes, I know its 2008! WAH! - cubicledrone, on 01/09/2009, -7/+6Here's how to collaborate with MS Office users:
"Send me a PDF or ***** off"
Thank you. - inactive, on 01/09/2009, -2/+1I thought it said iWock. I was thinking Lucas and Jobs had a drunken night at a party or something.
- spiderbaby138, on 01/09/2009, -5/+4Know what makes work extra productive? When you have to log in to extra applications!
What's next? keyboardless computers?
http://www.theonion.com/content/video/apple_introd ... - inactive, on 01/09/2009, -5/+2Wow, yet another application with a name based on what it does. iWork, how long till mac has a porn library called 'iJackit'???
Enough with the ***** iNames, its old. - mangiacake, on 01/09/2009, -7/+2Finally!! Woohoo - well done Mac!
