- Walker2323, on 10/17/2008, -8/+22This Digg submission is clearly made by the developers and a bunch of their buddies. What a bunch of BS comments. Come on, guys. Try harder to conceal the bias.
- peestandingup, on 10/17/2008, -2/+15The facebook iPhone app needs this locator service. That would be awesome because you would already have all your friends in one app.
- maehem, on 10/17/2008, -0/+12Awesome porno soundtrack!
- PRlME, on 10/17/2008, -0/+9Great now my girl will know i'm at the bar and not volunteering at the hospital.
- superkendall, on 10/17/2008, -0/+8I really like Vimeo as well, it's nice to see it slowly growing as a good way to distribute higher resolution video online. Sometimes YouTube resolutions are too restrictive.
- Acqua206, on 10/17/2008, -1/+8Yay! Now everyone I know can see that I stay home all day and have no life!! Sweetness.
- credential101, on 10/17/2008, -1/+8Would only be as useful if it's free.
- fox, on 04/11/2009, -2/+8looks good. Kind of like twinkle + facebook. But I don't really want to use another location aware social networking app. Kind of just wish existing apps would incorporate some of these features instead of using a whole other app.
- pak314, on 10/17/2008, -1/+7Call it S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
- Relikh, on 10/17/2008, -1/+7Indeed, I can't wait to go to areas and watch poor people talk face to face in public places like suckers.
- WestonP, on 10/17/2008, -3/+8Cool. It's good to see that the demo was in Denver... maybe this will have enough use in my area to be worthwhile.
- BrendanSheehan, on 10/17/2008, -0/+4Kids with iPhones?
- LtXenodite, on 10/17/2008, -0/+4I don't see why you guys are digging joncoyne down, his comment is valid.
- NeoNcP, on 10/17/2008, -2/+6pretty cool, but amazing is a strong word
- staticfish, on 10/17/2008, -1/+5I thought you used Windows...
- mark076h, on 10/17/2008, -2/+6Does brightKite have a lot of users? all of the social networking apps out for the iPhone already are pretty good but nobody uses them, i think it is going to be another few years when all phones have GPS and are smart phone like for apps before this stuff really takes off.
- svensko, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3Great! Even more ways to avoid actual human contact!
- blurrie, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3what happens when someone does get stalked?
the government isn't big brother. we are big brother. - P1um, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3My pager can do that, kind of.
- holeymoley, on 10/17/2008, -5/+8dammit - I wish my I could watch this video on my iPhone and see what the buzz is about, but it can't play it
- bulbasuar, on 10/17/2008, -2/+5Anyone supporting this is welcoming a Orwellian big brother into their lives with open arms. You should not know everyone around with a electronic device, you should not know where all your friends all the time and most importantly you shouldn't be willing to give away your privacy for fun of it.
- inactive, on 10/17/2008, -3/+6I'm going to wait for you there and punch your face
- superkendall, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2But you do not have to. That's what I personally like about Brightkite compared to other location based social services, is you have a lot of control over who can see what. If you want only your friends can ever see where you are, and even then you can limit what they can see. You can choose to check in at something as generic as a city, or as specific as an address - and you can name places, that get automatic privacy controls applied to any posts you make when checked in these locations.
I agree that services like these seem at first disconcerting for the degree of information you give up. But there are benefits in being able to tell what your friends are up to, or just to be social with people around you if you wish. It's a tool like any other tool, and can be used well if you make the effort. - smpx, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2Nope, I never had the "drop call" issue to begin with, and I live in a cell connection dead zone (at least it was a dead zone to old LG).
- jasontho, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2I use brightkite and love it. I just wish they would open it up from beta and w coudl convince twitter users to use it as their main twitter app. The iPhone app looks amazing and will become my main twitter app on my iphone
- inactive, on 10/17/2008, -4/+6STALKERRIFIC!!!!!!
- kaeppler, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2Actually I was leaning towards Android, but this actually makes me reconsider... if the iPhone had video recording, I'd definitely get one with apps like this one available.
Does anyone know if the Brightkite guys are planning to release their client on Android, too? - barkerja, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2Where you getting your information? It uses the corelocation of the iPhone which last time I checked HAS GPS. If you're not on an iPhone then there are a myriad of other sources to include SMS, Web, and E-Mail.
- njren78, on 10/19/2008, -0/+2I'll probably start using my Brightkite account when this app hits the App Store. I haven't used it once since I signed up because the Web app they provide is cannot grab my location by GPS (since Web apps cannot do that), so it makes checking in while on the go a hassle. This looks like it will make that a lot easier.
- hellenkeller69, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2Dugg for the high quality video. Something you don't see too much now a days.
- znicket, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2This is ok for 25 year olds and younger. We older people just want to have a quiet alone time now and then and don't really give a fig what my buddies are doing or if they are close by.
- andrewhyde, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2I think I figured this out...
With auto guess on, it looks at your location and compares it to your placemarks, offering places that you usually check in first.
Since Brady most likely checks into Skyline Park, it suggests that as well.
Or so I think. Very similar usage for me. - sw1ft, on 10/17/2008, -1/+3I bet you two are 4 popped-collars cool.
- andrewhyde, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2The privacy settings are great, you can be private to all, private to all but your trusted friends, or just be public.
You can also just have a location be set to private, the rest public. - superkendall, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2I didn't at first much like Twitter either. But the thing I started using it more for, was actually seeing what other people were saying about various topics - every now and then throwing my own comment into the mix.
Location based social media is actually more usable in that regard, because at any place you can leave a comment about a place. It can be a note about some food you really liked (or didn't) or about a concert, or whatever... it's really interesting to come across notes for places, and you are also more likley to have something to say about stuff around you than you would be just random thoughts on a service like Twitter.
That's what I think it better about location aware social stuff, is that it's just more likely to get used and thus have more interesting content. - MScrip, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2This kind of technology would be cool if local businesses used it to announce food specials and bands who will be performing in area bars... especially if you're visiting a new town for the weekend.
- kalleanka, on 10/17/2008, -2/+4So what, it is a cool app and very related to the "technology" section they have posted the video under.
If you don't like it, bury it and stop complain about it. - Speed, on 10/17/2008, -1/+3No kidding the video was made by the developers, hence why the user name was "Brightkite"
- snapya, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2yeah this would be awesome built into the facebook application
- superkendall, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2I think he's agreeing that the video makes it look like he would use the service more...
- skippyrandom, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2or really...don't?
- barkerja, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2I can't tell you on how many occasions I've met people through a location-aware social network at a location I was at and joined them for a drink or two. Hell, Brightkite has even alerted me when an actual (real-life) friend of mine was in the neighborhood and I would have never known had it not been for Brightkite.
- joeMurphy, on 10/17/2008, -5/+6Weird to watch that video -- I live a block away from that Metropolis coffee shop.
That said, the map in the video that pinpointed the coffee shop as being near skyline park in downtown Denver was off on its pinpoint by more than a mile. - spoonchucks, on 10/19/2008, -0/+1Save yourself some money & heartache. Don't do it.
More than likely, the implementation won't live up to the hype and you'll be left holding the bag for the next 2 years. - superkendall, on 10/17/2008, -4/+5There are a lot of social media apps, but nothing that goes to as great an effort to allow you to configure what the public can see vs. your friends.
