All Front Page MSN Stories Bash iPhone
tech.msn.com — If you look at the front page of the MSN Tech page, all the stories' headlines cast a negative light on the iPhone. Here are the headlines: Lots to love, but flaws too. Compare iPhone alternatives. Tweak your phone to make it rival an iPhone. I can't say that I'm surprised...

How tough is the iPhone?
Sound Off: Will you buy an iPhone? - hockey, on 10/11/2007, -11/+92you call THAT bashing?
Sensationalist headline FTW!!!- faskill, on 10/11/2007, -10/+1RAWR!

- mentor972, on 10/11/2007, -24/+15"Tweak your phone to make it rival an iPhone"
Yeah right. You can't polish a turd. Exactly how do you tweak Windows Mobile to not look like crap, sync with iTunes, and play Quicktime?- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -8/+26...well, for all its crappyness, WM actually supports 3d party apps...
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -9/+21"how do you tweak Windows Mobile to not look like crap"
There are plenty of homescreen managers like Facade that take care of that, and a teeming community of homescreen designers, and plenty of themes that can make WM as attractive as the iPhone interface.
"sync with iTunes"
Why would anyone want it to sync with iTunes when it syncs just fine with Outlook?
"Plays Quicktime"
Dude, your iPhone doesn't even play quicktime, so shut the ***** up.- mhender, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1DIGG THIS MAN. DIGG HIM RIGHT AWAY. DIGG HIIIIIIM!!!!!!
- missingnoh4x, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5iTunes and Quicktime suck, anyway.
- cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3I don't really see an agenda... no more so than Information Week.
Currently, I see:
* iPhone: Lots to love, but flaws too
* Top executives face e-mail attacks
* Slide show: A history of cell phones
* 11 iPhone gotchas
* 25 Web sites to watch
* iPhone alternatives
I love the end of the "gotchas".
------------
Finally, a few other issues that probably aren't deal-breakers but are still worth considering:
* It's a thief magnet: Everybody wants an iPhone, including people who aren't above stealing yours.
* Multismudge screen: You can use all five fingers on the screen at once? Better wash your hands first.
* OMG no IM: Inveterate chatters won't be so :) about being limited to SMS.
------------
Yikes! How can you list "potential theives" as a "gotcha"? For the record, my last cell phone was smudetastic too. Welcome to the world of glass screens. Also, yeah... I was using Meebo.com yesterday for IMing on my iPhone through all the popular clients and it worked great... Ur, nice... um, "article" there.
On the other side, at the end of the article, they listed more articles (powered by PC World, as the rest are):
* iPhone review roundtable
* Dump your current contract to be iPhone eligible
* The great iPhone hunt of 2007
* Poll: 9 percent of cell phone users want iPhone
* Sound Off: Are you planning on buying an iPhone? - WhiteIce89, on 10/11/2007, -11/+7For obvious reasons Microsoft won't shine light on the iPhone. Why does this surprise anyone? And second of all, the iPhone is a shiny, overhyped turd. Sorry but a 6.8 CNET rating out of 508(!) users is horrifying.
- DaMacGamer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6A bunch of those reviews were written before the iPhone was even released, so you cant really judge using them.
- aristotle0dude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7The majority of those "reviews' are by MS and Apple fanboys that never even bought one fighting it out. The anti-Apple fanboys give it a 1 or 2 without even having seen one while apple fanboys give it a 10 also without having touched one.
- sulaco, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Since when did CNET carry any weight with intelligent people?
- a0me, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11A Microsoft owned website bashing an Apple product?
Please, say it's not true!!!!!!!!! - willgill, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Hmm I don't see the bashing. It's all accurate.
"Lot's to love but flaws too" - Pretty accurate. We all know how pretty it is and also all the things missing.
"iPhone alternatives" - Shocker, ... there ARE alternatives and one's with tons more features like the Sprint Mogul or Nokia N95
"Tweak your phone to make it rival an iPhone" - Geez, what if we like the more full featured WM6 devices but like to spruce up the GUI?
"Will you buy and iPhone" - Come on... it's a poll for crying out loud. How is that bashing? - Rileyper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2First of all microsoft isnt bashing the iPhone Second, the tech news on msn is done by "PC World" Editors,

- linkin1, on 10/11/2007, -143/+148i'm not suprised either, iphone is a complete rubbish, this is 2007 and iphone still does not record video or send picture MMS.
- spiffyfitz, on 10/11/2007, -16/+9Who's to say that those features won't be added with a software update?
I won't be getting one either way... not for at least two years.- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -7/+16I will tell you right now. Those features will not be added to this model of the iPhone. The software updates are gonna fix a few things here and there, but this is the phone you paid $600 for.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13If the camera can record video, why doesn't it do so out of the box?
If it can't, no amount of updates will change that fact.
(Although, rumor has it that the problem isn't the camera, as such, but the fact that there was no small h.264 encoding chip available, and without that chip, encoding video would be too heavy a task for the iPhone hardware... so again, not something software can fix)- abandonedhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Hm. That's interesting, seeing that it has an h.264 decoder for YouTube though.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I thought so to. I *think* I heard it on MacBreak Weekly #46, which is why I only consider it a rumor.
However, it makes sense: there are plenty of portable media devices out there which might benefit from a small-scale decoder, so there's a market to create one; the need for an *encoder* on the same scale isn't nearly as great.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I thought so to. I *think* I heard it on MacBreak Weekly #46, which is why I only consider it a rumor.
- abandonedhero, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Hm. That's interesting, seeing that it has an h.264 decoder for YouTube though.
- sneakerelph, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Apple is so gung ho over h.264 that they can't use another less processor intensive codec? my fricken sony ericsson POS will record video into Mpeg 4. it's not h.264 but do they really need that kind of codec for a 2 megapixel camera?
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Depends... Many (phone)cameras don't even record at the full rez of the camera: my SE has a 2MB camera, but only records in 640x480, so no massive compression is needed. However, if you're actually going to record at the full res (close to Full HDTV -- 1600x1200x30fps), you're going to need a good codec.
- Nossie, on 10/11/2007, -16/+7Bill, is that you?
you do realise they said that about the revision 1 ipod right? hehe
and no, I havent and wont be buying an iphone.... I'm spoiled in europe with all the touchscreen hi-tech phones we have already
give me gps, a sd slot and HSDPA and I'll be all steves.- missingnoh4x, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1The 1st gen iPod was just a generic low-quality MP3 player, and was only mac-compatible to boot. Evn the most recent models would still be lame if not for iPodLinux really taking advantage of the hardware in there to do decent stuff.
- noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -19/+9Quit your bitching for gods sake. Any idiot can seen why MSN would be running nothing but anti-iPhone propaganda. Your complaints have nothing to do with any of it.
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12Um, the engadget review panned the iPhone as well, but they admited they liked it because they were delusional apple fanboys.
- potp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8propaganda??? those may be anti iphone but they speak the truth.
- Jonjonr6, on 10/11/2007, -14/+50I see, for a phone to be good, it has to record video and have picture messaging capability!
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -12/+10No, it needs those features to be modern. In other words 1999 called and they want their phone back.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -9/+24No, but those are pretty much standard features, and their absence is about on par with having a computer without USB ports: they're not essential, but you expect them to be there.
- jnajera, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I understand your points, but it not like the razr was originally released with video. That was feature added later via software update. Plus it is not like the video mode on that phone is good, on fact most video recorded on a camera phone is sh*t!
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5And sometimes a ***** video recording is exactly what I need.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8...well, *everyone* loves ***** video -- just look at youtube ;)
- jnajera, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I understand your points, but it not like the razr was originally released with video. That was feature added later via software update. Plus it is not like the video mode on that phone is good, on fact most video recorded on a camera phone is sh*t!
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Sorry, video recording was not an expected standard feature when the Razr debuted, so your argument doesn't hold much water. Today, video recording is an expected feature, one that the APple phone is sorely lacking.
- frankzzsword, on 10/11/2007, -9/+1linkin this is 2007 and dude we dont have a frekin jet car. I hate riding my frekin land car. Although it goes upto 250 mph but still It cannot fly.

- thenumber8, on 10/11/2007, -9/+7my question is: who actually uses video recording on their cell phone? I can record video and take pictures etc on mine, i rarely take pictures and never record video, its not what i use the phone for. the camera on any phone isnt nice enough to replace even the cheapest hand held digital camera, if i actually want pictures ill use that.
though admittedly the inability to send pictures without using email is a bit of a drag. - cleverboy, on 10/11/2007, -10/+16The iPhone can send pictures via MMS. Just send them an email with an attachment (from post at ilounge forums). Done.

Add the extra e-mail address to your buddy's contact, and you're good. And video? Well... I didn't buy my iPhone to be a video camera. Unless its an Nokia N95, I'll bet your phone's "video" option is a low-res joke that you don't actually *use*. I mean, seriously. What have your practically been able to do with the video on your phone that you wouldn't have preferred simply using a REAL video device for? Home movies? Industrial espionage? Incriminating Michael Richards? God knows if you've ever sent it to another person and gotten you bill, you'd think twice next time.- MrSkrilla, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11I understand, you have to justify your $500 (maybe 600?) purchase. Have fun with that.
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2it was real easy,
just play with it for a few minutes!
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2it was real easy,
- i6koi, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3I don't have an iPhone, and I won't be getting one in the near future because I don't like AT&T, but I'm going to second cleverboy here. My phone can take pictures but I rarely use this feature because of the horrible quality, poor storage space, and exorbitant fees my carrier charges to send them to others. It's a novelty item--you can say you have the ability to take videos and pictures, but no one I know (in the US) uses their phone to seriously record media. At least I don't think they do.
Either that or Apple just wanted to save something for Rev. 2 - Demagogue, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3yeah but thats a work around and is inconvenient. I use video on my phone all the time and do send video messages. Its a flaw in your precious phone you just can't get around.
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1So he is copy pasting all those extentions into the email field of the contact manager? It seems without copy paste this isn't even a work around...
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Two problems: first, what youäre describing is a work-around to a problem that shouldn't exist to begin with. It makes it harder for you, and for people sending stuff to you, for absolutely no good reason.
Secondly, this doesn't solve the problem with MMS being used in Europe and Asia as a means for micropayments to vending machines, transportation tickets and such. It's a bit silly that my Nokia 3310 can buy me a ticket to the bust, and the iPhone cannot.- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2*buss... I really have my spelling under control today o_O
- MrSkrilla, on 10/11/2007, -7/+11I understand, you have to justify your $500 (maybe 600?) purchase. Have fun with that.
- Skeuomorph, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10I prefer to send pictures by actual email, instead of some crackpot protocol dreamed up by the telcos that doesn't inter-operate on half the phones that claim to support it.
- synagence, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Complete rubbish is a little strong, but i was all ready to love the iphone but the software does seem to be missing some key thing that we should get in this day and age:
MMS Picture messaging (in Europe this is a MUST) ... screw emailing mms's ... thats dumb
Bluetooth Connectivity, not allowing iphone to be used a modem or even allowing basic bluetooth file transfers between 2 phones like videos or sounds etc
Custom Rings etc. Not allowing basic personalisation of the iphone is too limiting
Edge Data....too slow.... HSDPA/UMTS etc is a must again. Especially in europe when the phone will be launch at the end of the year ... 2.5g is no-go
Hope they do launch a revised version software at least....might be tempted to buy one then ... otherwise the "cool" factor is simply not enough for the outlay - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -8/+9This is 2007. MMS is for people whose outdated phones cannot support real eMail, since MMS was a bridge technology at first used when phones really couldn't do email well.
Welcome to the future. There is no MMS here, just as I don't crank my care every morning.- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I suppose your browser doesn't support GIF and JPEG images, then, since they're outdated too? I suppose they should remove SMS messaging from the iPhone since it's equally (in fact *even more*) ancient and outdated?
The fact of the matter is, MMS is widely used for a lot of things outside the US, and the pricing schemes allow for it. It has nothing to do with what the other phones can or can't do -- it's about supporting an industry standard that is used by tons of people and a vast variety of services. There is absolutely no valid reason for the iPhone not to support this functionality.
As far as anyone can tell, the reason the iPhone doesn't support MMS is because it never caught on in the US, and the reason for this is because the customers get screwed over sideways by the carriers on messaging fees. That is not the case in the rest of the world, so MMS is a must if the iPhone wants to compete. - willgill, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Um.. how are the other people supposed to get your email on their phone? Most people don't have a smartphone. Even my kid's $29 phones have MMS. Besides, MMS is more of a "push". Email on the iPhone is just whenever you check it, so who knows when you'll get it. Does that make iPhone a bridge technology until you get real PUSH email?
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I suppose your browser doesn't support GIF and JPEG images, then, since they're outdated too? I suppose they should remove SMS messaging from the iPhone since it's equally (in fact *even more*) ancient and outdated?
- mr_wej, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2You're right, it's 2007. Welcome to email. MMS? LOL!
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I just don't understand: why you'd want the iPhone to sell less than it could just because of such a small feature?
- SenorCardgage74, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2"This is 2007", and I have a user name referencing an awful nümetal band from the turn of the century.
Is you baseball cap turned completely back, or do you prefer the 80-degree tilt? - ST0N3, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3i don't know about you, but who actually records video on their phone, and who actually uses MMS text messages? Why would you want to send MMS if you have a fully-featured email client installed on your iPhone.
Welcome to "2007". Since you clearly are wearing your ass as a hat, why don't you pull your head out of there, and give the iPhone a chance.
- spiffyfitz, on 10/11/2007, -16/+9Who's to say that those features won't be added with a software update?
- meshman, on 10/11/2007, -23/+206"I can't say that I'm surprised..."
Same here. I mean, after Apple bashes Microsoft repeatedly in commercials and then several times during the recent WWDC keynote, you can't blame MS for ***** in their cornflakes.- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -12/+8There are 2 sections, second is the section is called 'Most POPULAR on MSN Tech & Gadgets' so the iPhone is a pretty popular topic at the moment (I look at the Technology section on Digg and weep) and this isn't anything being done by MS just what is currently some popular stories, hence why it's changing often too.
First is the 'iPhone fever' part.. you can assume there will be lots of stories about the iPhone in a single part called 'iPhone fever.'
Buried as lame, a lot of Diggers are really desperate to bash Microsoft and themselves are pretty stupid/clueless. - KidVicious, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3Are you stepping in my cornflakes? Cause let me tell you something about stepping in someone else's cornflakes: It's a really weird way to eat cornflakes.
- antiNeo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Hehe, thanks for the Billy and Mandy quote; that was exactly what I was thinking. Now I'll probably be dugg-down to death for mentioning a show from Cartoon Network. Ohh well.

- antiNeo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Hehe, thanks for the Billy and Mandy quote; that was exactly what I was thinking. Now I'll probably be dugg-down to death for mentioning a show from Cartoon Network. Ohh well.
- consonance, on 10/11/2007, -6/+8At first, I wasn't too pleased by the stories MSN was featuring, but I can see why Microsoft would do it now that I've read your comment. I realized that Apple has been bashing Microsoft for years, and Microsoft hasn't been doing much of the opposite in organized marketing. Ballmer has until now been the only public face of Microsoft that's thrown mud at Apple. Even if Microsoft didn't mean to sling mud at Apple (all the features mentioned are in the Most Popular category), Microsoft probably isn't happy with Jobs creating posters that say, "Start your copiers, Redmond," and then showing them at WWDCs.
- 0owh0r5xzs, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Well they DID copy most of the Mac OS X features for Vista. I guess Jobs was a little bitter about that.
- hnilsen, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Did they? You act as if Apple invented cool GUI. Apple stole everything from OpenSource stuff that's been lying around for ages. At least Microsoft steals from the rich, right? ;-)
- 0owh0r5xzs, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Well they DID copy most of the Mac OS X features for Vista. I guess Jobs was a little bitter about that.

- icurnvs, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7The difference is MSN is supposed to be a news site. Apple commercials are advertisements. They're supposedly two different media.
Wait a sec...News sites acting as propaganda machines? Unheard of!!- missingnoh4x, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1MSN is supposed to be a news site? Where have you been? It's Microsoft's poorly disguised propaganda machine, just as Fox News is a thinly veiled ad for the Republican party.

- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -13/+7SO I guess the reason you are bitter is that MS sold more XBox 360's since release than apple has sold computers... And the XBox 360 is considered a failure...
- duccodude, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5how is the Xbox 360 remotely even considered a failure?
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1Because the apple fanboys insist it is!!
- paddler, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Because of abnormally high failure rates?
- slayerab, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6It's not really considered a failure, its just that the Xbox program hasn't made a profit for Microsoft yet.
- Bamborzled, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4"It's not really considered a failure, its just that the Xbox program hasn't made a profit for Microsoft yet."
Yes, that's right. After seven years, they still haven't turned a profit from this Xbox thing. I believe X360s are still being manufactured at a loss?
- duccodude, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5how is the Xbox 360 remotely even considered a failure?
- Eddible, on 10/11/2007, -4/+13What? Zune isn't a competitor to the iPhone!
- etx313, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3LOL deadboy! Your really stretching it there, chief!
- Yarnage, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Too bad your comment is inaccurate but oh well
- joshman5k, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Does that explain why the mac ads are so bitter to Windows?
- Rileyper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'm gonna be dugg down for saying it but...ZING
- reekon, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31Yeah, that well known Zune phone competitor.
- fxspec06, on 10/11/2007, -17/+82I think this one goes into the, 'Who Cares?' category.
- MasterGrief, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3You'd think that, but this is Digg, and that's an Apple product.
Just about everyone cares.

- caryw, on 10/11/2007, -25/+20This is why you shouldn't get your news from a corporation!
And yet mainstream America does on a daily basis.
At least diggers are smart enough to NOTICE the bias and laugh about it.- Inqu, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Yeah, because Digg'ers aren't biased one tiny bit...

- thenumber8, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1nonetheless i think caryw has a good point about americans getting news from corporations and not noticing the bias, digg is biased for sure its impossible to escape bias, but being able to recognize it is an important step toward understanding
- Fabozz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah! People should only get their news from governments, not from corporations!

- mlawrence, on 10/11/2007, -22/+26That's what happens when a product gets so incredibly over hyped. It's a flashy phone and people are coming to terms with that.
- p51d007, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4It all has to do with the fact that the dopes who buy this thing are swayed by bright shiny objects. To hell with

* Vista shipped. So where are the new games?
* Are these games worth waiting for?- lashrac606, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14The question then to ask is "Are they just pessimists or realists?"
- noseeme, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5Haha, from MSN tech and gadgets:
"Six months on, PC gamers are still waiting. And man, are they pissed.
Why? Judging from the forums and blog posts, there is plenty to be peevish about — the anemic Games for Windows - Live initiative, slow game performance and Vista’s demanding system requirements. But the chief complaint is the lack of new games."

I like my news cranky and negative -- maybe I should start using MSN (urgh... just typing that gave me the jibblies) - TeatimeGrommit, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4It's better than Fox "George Bush, best President ever?" type news by a long shot. - Shawnosaurus, on 10/11/2007, -21/+38I don't get the point. Is it that MS isn't under the apple fanboy influence? How dare they point out flaws or provide comparisons?
- 00Dan, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Comparisons??? What comparisons???
Take another look at the site. Everything that contains a quote, anything that could be verified, everyones opinion is generally positive.
That information is surrounded by headlines like 11 iPhone gotchas and iPhone alternatives which are filled with "potential problems"
I'm not saying MSN should have a headline "iPhone, Best Gadget Ever!", but when you are reviewing a competitors product you have to understand that your motives will be questioned and the information presented on their site (in my opinion) shows bias. - Rileyper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I don't get the point. - icurnvs, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4I think the funny thing is that MSN is supposed to be a news source. The Apple commercials are advertisements...Two supposedly different mediums.

you don't spend $600 on a phone that you're "iffy" about. and... if you've been on digg for the past week, you should probably already know about every single ***** feature 20 times over before you bought the damn thing. - mr_wej, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Oh man, your comment made me laugh out loud! - iamnotbatman, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Because we are talking about a news source. You may be too young to realize it, but news sources used to have something called 'journalistic integrity.' It is both a fundamental requirement of free-market capitalism, and of a properly functioning democracy. You should be angry at your government for caving to corporate lobbyists in weakening FCC oversight.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3...at the same time, couldn't that be what the submitter is missing here: they present *news* which (gasp!) includes the flaws in the iPhone that have become apparent after its launch?
- iamnotbatman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I think the point is that if msn has more negative stories that other news sources (which isn't clear to me since I don't frequent msn, but which is purported here), then it is likely a conflict of interest due to the fact that msn is financially liable to Microsoft. In other words it is suspicious regardless of your personal opinion about whether or not the iPhone deserves such negative press.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3...at the same time, couldn't that be what the submitter is missing here: they present *news* which (gasp!) includes the flaws in the iPhone that have become apparent after its launch?

- gfair, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8This is great stuff:
Finally, a few other issues that probably aren't deal-breakers but are still worth considering:
* It's a thief magnet: Everybody wants an iPhone, including people who aren't above stealing yours.
* Multismudge screen: You can use all five fingers on the screen at once? Better wash your hands first.
* OMG no IM: Inveterate chatters won't be so :) about being limited to SMS.- tyggy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4meebo will work on iPhone
- ST0N3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2wow so you've read the script that T-Mobile and Sprint are using? You're cool. Where's the part about the "stay near an outlet!" jesus christ the phone is pretty damn amazing, and it doesn't need to do some of the stuff that people say it needs to(MMS, and IM on cell phones is ***** anyways.)
- fireal, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3Heh, Just like Finnish press. Only negative points about the iPhone, because we have Nokia and that's the best one in the world is it!?! But seriously they only blame iPhone about the activation problems and you cannot change battery or something like that.
- JasonCox, on 10/11/2007, -17/+24Come on, even you guys who are anti-Microsoft and pro-Apple have to admit the iPhone isnt living up to the euphoric hype Apple Marketing division put up. The only thing it has going for it is it has long battery life than predicted and it has some cool animations. Other than that, it's just the same features I have on my cell phone with a huge screen that costs $450 bucks more.
- frankzzsword, on 10/11/2007, -12/+6no u dont get the point
it has the BEST GUI ever designed which is so simple even your grandma can use it without needing to read the manual provided with ur other phone.
But dude I must say I appreciate your potential of intelligence- bobbyi, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7You should keep buying phones that are optimal for grandmothers to use. I'll buy ones that are good for me.

- aristotle0dude, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Wow bobby, you must be a lot of fun at parties. Not everyone is interested in being a geek and some of us who are in IT during the day are not interested in being a geek on our own time.
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4why is a good easy to use interface a bad thing?
- Soulhuntre, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8And since Apple can't figure out how to code COPY & PASTE intot he thing, my grandma will be right at home having to write stuff down on a scrap pof paper because her 600$ cell phone has less features than a rock.

- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8I thought the iPhone lived up to all the hype, and more!
just because the interface is easy to use doesn't mean it isn't powerful!
because it is! - axle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I was pretty skeptical about the iphone. When products are hyped this much, they typically never are able to live up to it.
To test things out for myself, and to form my own opinion, I went to the apple store to play with one. I have to say, it's _really fun_ to play with. When was the last time I ever had that kind of experience with any of my other cell phone? Never. Perhaps I've only ever used crap phones. Aside from just being fun, its like a PDA, a cell phone, a mobile web browser, and an MP3 player rolled into one. And the features all seemed to work as advertised. I now believe the hype after finally getting to play with one.- ronmexico, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm in the same boat you are, I spent a half hour playing with it. The thing was an absolute blast to use, unfortunately AT&T isn't available in my area but they are buying a local carrier. When they do, I'll definitely be buying one. It seems the vast majority of comments are from people who haven't actually used one. I went on the Blackberry website this morning to watch a demo of their phone. OMG is all I can say. How could you possibly say it's as good or better then the iPhone UI?
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Why admit what is not true? The phone works just as the commercials show. The browser is great, maps are fantastic, and EDGE is usable though not fast (those comparing it to dialup - try browsing the modern web on dialup, and you'll be BEGGING for EDGE speeds in under an hour).
The phone is every bit as awesome as advertised, something that anyone who actually has USED ONE has to admit.

- BigJ27, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10Are you sure that's not supposed to say "All front page stories bash iPhone"?
Because I could swear everyone is in fact bashing the iPhone, not just Microsoft.- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1they are just envious because they didn't get one!
you cannot review a product that you haven't used. I know some people tried to do it way before it was released, and now we find out that they were wrong, and made themselves look like asses. No removable SIM card my ass, Jobs even said it was in the keynote!- Septimus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It sucks.... but people always defend their mistakes.
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1they are just envious because they didn't get one!
- nhassan, on 10/11/2007, -7/+15"The software keyboard invites typos--and when you're entering passwords, there's no way of telling whether you've got them right until you get an 'access denied' prompt."
Thats a good point.- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4 it does the same thing on any computer!
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1why burry me down? does your computer not hide the password as you type?
if not then we can add another security flaw to Microsoft's ever so long list!- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5The difference is that, with a physical keyboard, you can generally get a sense of what key you actually ended up pushing, which means that you "feel" your mistypes and correct them.
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1why burry me down? does your computer not hide the password as you type?
- althe3rduww, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4You can tell if you typed it right because you get a character key confirmation after you hit each button. Would people stop spreading false FUD!!
- natenovs, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0i played with the phone for a half an hour.
i could type fine in email becuase it auto corrected, but it took four tries to get the url right, and i never successfully entered a password.
get a grip, the keyboard isn't the best.
- natenovs, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0i played with the phone for a half an hour.
- ST0N3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You hold down the key until the right key shows up, stupid.
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Just as stated above - you can see the key preview before it's typed, the key is not actually typed until you let go. So you can easily and carefully type any password just paying attention to the letter you are on.
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -11/+4 it does the same thing on any computer!
- carolinaws, on 10/11/2007, -11/+5iEnvy.
- kungfuice, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14So this is the complete opposite of Digg where all the top stories for the last month have all been about how amazing the IPhone is.
Can we please just talk about something else?- frankzzsword, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2talk? ok who asked you to click on this post. just ignore
- Buckeye70, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7Of course no questions when the pro-apple press (usatoday, wall street journal) when they get apple products weeks before anyone else and amazingly always give them a great review.
- quarando, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Pro-apple press? Do you really think the wall street journal cares that much about apple? I don't plan on getting an iphone, but after trying one, I think it is an amazing product. Sure it doesn't have every feature found on some other smart phones, but that was never the purpose. It is meant to be a consumer oriented hand held internet device/ipod/phone, and it more than succeeds at all 3. No phone deserves the hype that the iphone got, but the iphone deserves every glowing review it received.
- Buckeye70, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Yes, I would say they reviewer at the Wall Street Journal cares a lot. Since he is only one of a handful of people to receive the phone early, do you think he is inclined to give it bad review? If he did, do you think he would receive the next apple product early? That is why a reputable reviewer (like consumer reports), pays for the product they review, they don't receive gifts and are less inclined to be fanboys. I think the iphone looks like a cool device, but since it is tied to AT&T, I will never have one.

- Mizzike, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17RE the "Are you planning on buying an iPhone?" link on that page...
I love how the ENTIRE FIRST PAGE of comments is DEVOID of anyone saying "yes, that seems kinda cool, I think I'll get one." It's all about how expensive it is, how it's a fingerprint magnet, and how AT&T sucks. This is why you want to read MANY different sites with MANY different takes to form your OWN opinion. Especially about world events.- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You know why the page is that way? You can't reach the feedback form with Safari, so Mac users cannot feedback without installing Firefox (even if you change the User Agent it doesn't work!!!)
- noahhoward, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Wow, you should never every rely on a competitors website for information about any product.
- rgodfrey, on 10/11/2007, -11/+22I guess the difference would be that MSN is a theoretically bias-free news organization and the PC-Mac commercials are, well, commercials.
- iHobo, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2MSN... MicroSoft Network... unbiased? Yeah, right.
- Stirk, on 10/11/2007, -13/+44If you don't like the iPhone, then don't buy it. It works completely as advertised, there are no features that Apple lied to you about. Enough of this crap already..
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3They promised the real internet. The safari browser fails to deliver on that front. It still needs web pages encoded for it.
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -6/+5no, safari works just fine on any web page!
people are making pages just for the iPhone for ease of use!
bigger buttons ect. you dont need bigger buttons, but you have to zoom in otherwise!

- digitalunit, on 10/11/2007, -7/+9The real internet includes Flash, ever since 1998, anyway. :)
- Me1000, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6flash is a plugin, the real internet is where you have a browser and dont have to download any type of plugin to view it!
- BasL, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4true
- robwilkens, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1If you like the iPhone, buy it. But keep it out of my list of "news" stories. I've got better things to read.

- colonels1020, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Ahh. Good 'ol Microsoft. They're always good for a laugh.
- MasterGrief, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If you laughed at that, I fear something may be wrong with you.
