- desistere, on 01/17/2008, -22/+160Except that it's vinyl and a case. I'm pretty sure I could make a vinyl case that looks like an envelope for my desktop computer. At this point, it's about being pretentious. "Look! My computer is so small it could fit in an envelope, but I'm not going to put it in one, because I have this case that looks like an envelope, to remind you of course that my computer could fit in an envelope, if I wanted to, which would be stupid of course, kind of like that optical drive you carry around like an idiot. Did I mention that I have 4 PS3s?"
- DaClamp, on 01/17/2008, -5/+80Does it come with a black shirt and blue jeans?
- TheRemoteViewer, on 01/17/2008, -1/+46I'm only buying it if it includes a smug sense of superiority.
- smoger, on 01/17/2008, -4/+42does this also have room for the magsafe adaptor, external superdrive, external ethernet port, remote, and externally powered usb hub?
- BrainInAJar, on 01/17/2008, -9/+39if people are willing to pay it, it's not overpriced.
welcome to capitalism. - davidave, on 01/17/2008, -3/+30why is this comment being buried, it's right on the nose
- seeyounorth, on 01/17/2008, -2/+23Is the red Kabbalah string included???
- stlcadet11, on 01/17/2008, -0/+16Dude you are annoying
- champ2153, on 01/17/2008, -2/+18Can't the "fuzzy fleece" build up a charge and possibly give your brand new MacBook Air an undesired surge to the electronics?
- Jookly, on 01/17/2008, -0/+11Nice laptop case.... wanna *****?
- abyssknight, on 01/17/2008, -0/+7Dugg for LRR 3 PS3's video reference.
- Hormelinator, on 01/17/2008, -0/+7been putting my latitude x1 in padded envelopes for 3 years now (its about 7 1/2 x 11 1/2)
- republikdh, on 01/17/2008, -5/+12This is neither brilliant nor worthwile-
- lukas88, on 01/17/2008, -0/+7I think it is a clever way to hide that you have a piece of machinery worth 2 grand under your arm. If you live in a crowded city, it might keep you from being robbed. Then again, most mac owners I know make sure everyone within a 5 mile radius knows that they own a mac, so I doubt people will buy it for this reason.
- dn11, on 01/17/2008, -1/+7Too bad Steve didn't literally pull this thing out of his ass.
- davepascoe, on 01/17/2008, -0/+5have you really got nothing better to do than go around the internet telling people that their taste in products is wrong?
if apple/jobs annoys you so much, just look away. if you don't like the products, don't buy them. - PeyoteWarr, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5Have a look at their about page...
http://www.manilamac.com/about.html - jhails, on 01/17/2008, -1/+5Paging Paris Hilton, your laptop will be ready in Feb.
- t0ken, on 01/17/2008, -0/+4@whitenoise
The differences between Notebook computers are slightly more numerous and complex than the differences between different brands of gasoline. If you were to compare say, a Mercedes and Kia you'd be drawing a more accurate comparison, but still you have consumers who WANT a luxury car. Similarly, there are people that want to have a Sub-Notebook and enjoy the Apple GUI, and are willing to pay a premium for it, even if that means having to take out a loan.
Once again, welcome to capitalism. It may not be a utopia with streets of gold and people tossing money at you, nonetheless it is the system we have in place. - johnbell, on 01/17/2008, -8/+11you all wish you thought of it first.
- tupperbacharach, on 01/17/2008, -6/+9Yet more sickening fanboy (fangirls).
Steve Jobs' putting an ultra-slim into an envelope was a cheap gag just like those used on Popeil commercials.
Ultra-slims have been around for a decade, and any one of them can fit into Jobs' envelope. In addition, he used a big envelope.
By the way, the Macbook Air is not the "world's slimmest laptop,"
The fact that the Mac fanboys praised Jobs for that stupid gag shows how naive, simple-minded and pathetically adoring they are. Jobs would have probably gotten the same idiotic praise if he had put a turd into the envelope (and, considering the Macbook Air's specs, that is actually what he did). - WebCester, on 01/17/2008, -0/+3I'm not even going to bother responding to what you put in the second part, but this quote caught my eye:
"It is always gratifying when mactards [sic] move away from the topic and resort to personal attacks"
What caught my eye is that you ended your first post with this quote:
"…how naive, simple-minded and pathetically adoring they are…"
QED. The only thing more annoying than a fanboy is an anti-fanboy crusader who doesn't even practice what he preaches. - zspeed78, on 01/17/2008, -1/+4You can think of it second and still sell it. I dont think the guy making it can protect that idea.
Anyway, if you get this, youre just showing everyone "hey, im a lemming" - madmage, on 01/17/2008, -5/+8If you can't afford it, you're at fault, not the system. Again, welcome to Capitallism/
- jedi851508, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2THIS IS MANILLLLLLLLLAAAAAAA!!!!!
- ers35, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2No, it's IT'S.
:) - surf314, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2It's not a real envelope, it's vinyl made to look like one.
- Urkel, on 01/17/2008, -1/+3Things that fit in a Manila envelope:
- 1 stack of 8x11 paper
- My Macbook (or any other sub 13" notebook)
- 4 Asus EEE stacked 2 by 2
- Box of Oreos and small thermos of milk
- $1800 in cash
I get it. The envelope thing was a good photo op for introducing a product. But let's not pretend putting something in a manila envelope is somehow a feat that couldn't be accomplished until now. It's a envelope! - mattsonster, on 01/17/2008, -2/+4finally a normal price. there was another screenshot from apple site with this case for $300 and an extra $20 for a red kabbala string yesterday on digg.
this price is okay) - davepascoe, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2yes
- YoctoYotta, on 01/17/2008, -0/+2@mywhitenoise
I can't speak to the quality of Shell's gas versus Arco's, but believe it or not, many people see higher price and assume that equals higher quality. They then spend more money on the same ho-hum product because they believe they are getting the premium version. This really only works great when the customer has no tangible way of judging they quality of what they are buying. - Ashura2k, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Jesus you people are a reactive bunch. Chill out, I think it's a pretty cool idea. And plus it's made by Jona Bechtolt from the band YACHT, he can do no wrong :P
- merreborn, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1The screenshot was a joke, created in photoshop. If you bothered to read the whole article, you'd have noticed the disclaimer at the bottom, clearly stating that it was a joke. There was never actually any such item on apple.com.
http://gizmodo.com/345406/apple-introduces-manila- ...
Right at the bottom:
"Yes, in case nobody has got this one, it's fake"
Congratulations on the lobotomy, by the way. - merreborn, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah, too bad it's a dell though.
- theOster, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1not only that, but it also comes with a molded rubber jobs penis "for whatever"
what line? - Goobernutz, on 01/17/2008, -2/+3good idea for when you're on the subway late at night. who would mug someone for a bunch of paper? but if you're seen carrying a big rectangle bag on your shoulder...then PEEEAAOOOOWW!!! blamblamblam BAAAMM!!! - jlimon, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Bitter much?
- merreborn, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1That's a good point. They should make sure to protect the sensitive electronics of laptops by enclosing them in some sort of plastic, non-conductive case.
Oh, wait.
...seriously, when's the last time you ever heard of someone doing damage to a laptop by delivering a static charge to the case? - theOster, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1maybe he's just trying to make the world a weirder place...
http://xkcd.com/325/ - getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1Who says he didn't?
- inactive, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Now how am i gonna install XP when this thing does not have any optical drive ?
Booo!!!!! - AndreasTh, on 01/17/2008, -5/+6That is rude!
- TRENT310, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Didn't anyone remember the Toshiba A-series laptops and the static problem? It was due to lack of grounding in the case.
- rezonq3, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1Hasn't anyone traced this guy's IP and hacked him yet?
- smrekar, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1im pretty sure it wasn't a manilla envelope, but a perforated interoffice envelope. Though similar, they are not as nice looking in manilla.
hence the red string
http://www.apple.com/macbookair/#ad - leprix, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1dont forget an external hdd, because that extra grand you spend only got you 64 gigs.
- emotecontrol, on 01/18/2008, -0/+1Thank you for helping us to help you to help us all.
- schroeder, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1EllOhEll's comment history looks like he just went crazy trying to get himself banned for the past few days. Before that he was normal (for digg). Just something I noticed when considering to report him.
- awhiteflame, on 01/17/2008, -0/+1It wasn't real. It was a satire.
