- Fredo521, on 03/13/2009, -5/+64adium rocks, but i still use ichat. bring video support to adium damnit!
- LiquidIse, on 03/13/2009, -2/+50Lots of Adium hate in here. I guess I'm the only one who dl's adium before any other app when i get a new comp...
- Lesli, on 03/13/2009, -0/+29I think Adium is only available for OSX.
If you're looking for something similar for Linux or Windows, check out Pidgin. It's nearly identical to Adium in functionality, and there are plugins you can install for use with Twitter. - redrabbit, on 03/13/2009, -3/+26They've been trying to get video support into Adium for years, and still haven't, but instead are working on twitter? Come on, give us video chat!
(and yes, i know there are weird ways to force Adium to have video chat through plugins and all, but it's just so much easier on iChat) - rossnyc, on 03/13/2009, -8/+28I don't get Twitter. Why would I want everyone to know what I'm doing all the time and why would they care? Not dissing twitter, if you like it, cool..maybe I'm getting old?
Adium is awesome though. - SteveMax, on 03/13/2009, -1/+12There is nothing the Adium guys can do to make video work (short of forking libpurple, which they don't want to do for obvious reasons). libpurple (the "core" of Adium and Pidgin) needs to add video support before any of those programs can do so.
As an aside, does video chat on iChat work for Jabber accounts? I know it works for Aim/Icq/.mac, but that's useless for anyone outside the USA (or Israel). MSN video would be the first priority, but most people now have gmail so Jabber video would be a reasonable compromise. - jlimon, on 03/13/2009, -3/+13Buried. Get it?
- deadbaby, on 03/13/2009, -1/+11As I'm found of saying Twitter is like a social network without all the boring stuff and fluff. I don't really care about seeing someone's photos, reading some long drawn out blog entry, or playing a stupid game with them. I might however care what they are doing -- especially if it's interesting or amusing or something I'm also interested in.
It's also helpful for those situations where you are not online at the same time as someone else or want to address a group of people at once. I don't really trust offline-IM delivery for that type of thing. It can be useful as purely a communication tool. - adidos, on 03/13/2009, -0/+10I'd imagine that twitter integration is about 100x easier to do than video chat...
- 1iProd, on 03/13/2009, -1/+10SURE IS LOTS OF RAGE AROUND HERE
I for one support this development, even though I don't use twitter and would rather have video support, but I feel like it's a nice addition. - erictheninja, on 03/13/2009, -1/+9I don't know if your comment is lined with arrogance or fun, but here: http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/VoiceAndVideo
This has been talked about for years. It's a libpurple design issue, not an Adium issue. - Shadowhawk109, on 03/13/2009, -0/+5There actually is support, it's just not great. You can add the "mebeam" plugin that will allow for 1 on 1 videochat in a browser window. It's not much, but it's a start.
http://www.adiumxtras.com/index.php?a=xtras&xt ... - Adgeman, on 03/13/2009, -0/+5erm, *****?
- chix0r, on 03/13/2009, -1/+6Yeah, shame it doesn't even exist for mac yet.
- andycr512, on 03/14/2009, -0/+4The Pidgin team have shown a lack of cluefulness about the needs of their users for awhile now; see the resizable text entry box fiasco for details.
- mrsteveman1, on 03/13/2009, -0/+4So in that case, open source can innovate and someone can do the work integrating video support, and fork the project, and ***** annoy everyone with dual projects for no good reason.
Are they refusing to even integrate support if someone else does it? - AngelBunny, on 03/14/2009, -0/+4adium + skype ftw
I get both webcam, and chatting this way. Sure it is two programs, but I like both of them. ^_^ - jordanneenan, on 03/13/2009, -0/+4I really dont understand why every single comment isn't "where the F**K is Adium 2.0???!!!111"
It was over 2 years ago I saw the article for it on Digg and I have been checking their site all the time to see if there are any updates....but am constantly dissapointed.
Adium could be everything I want and need, but at the moment it isn't so I dont use it. Give us some video support and better aesthetics and I will be a convert. - inactive, on 03/13/2009, -1/+5Good lord this is like the 10th Twitter story in the last 2-3 days. I know because I follow digg more than some douchebag on Twitter.
- MavRevMatt, on 03/13/2009, -2/+6That'll never happen unless the Pidgin team, Aidum uses libpurple which the Pidgin team releases, all leaves. If I remember reading correctly the main developers consider it stupid, and a waste of time.
- akatsuki, on 03/13/2009, -1/+5I'd rather have seen Xbox Live support for chat. That is actually chat related.
EventBox is pretty sweet for twitter and facebook. - DavidTurnbull, on 03/13/2009, -1/+4I do that too. Not sure why it needs a Twitter client though. Kind of losing focus as an application.
- zaren, on 03/13/2009, -0/+3I use iChat and two Twitter clients (one for "me", one for a RP thing I'm involved with). I used to use Adium for IM when I had to connect to multiple networks, and I might just give this new one a spin if it's got good Twitter support.
- AngelBunny, on 03/14/2009, -0/+3my thinking is along the exact same lines and this is why I haven't used twitter (yet). also, another main reason I haven't used twitter is because it goes hand in hand with texting on cell phones and I'm not big on that as well.
however, since adium has incorporated twitter now I might try it. It is always worth it to give something a chance and then judge afterwords. - LJSeinfeld, on 03/13/2009, -0/+3Adium and Pidgin share some of the same guts.
- MavRevMatt, on 03/14/2009, -0/+3"Are they refusing to even integrate support if someone else does it?"
As far as I know, yes that's the case. - akatsuki, on 03/13/2009, -0/+3Like I just want to tell people that I can join in a game later or whatever...
- kevine, on 03/13/2009, -0/+3I love Adium and I just may find myself getting into Twitter more. What I'd really like is Skype support in Adium...so I'm not running multiple apps just so I can also be on Skype.
- Darkyuubi, on 03/13/2009, -0/+3Adium looks great. You just need to take some time to make it look the way you want.
Video chat, I agree with you on that though... - Zippo, on 03/13/2009, -0/+3I'd love to use iChat if it would group the various clients into the one window like Adium... not have one window for Mobile Me, one for AIM, one for Jabber, and one for Bonjour. Seriously, I don't want 2 or 4 IM windows.
iChat also isn't nearly as athsetically pleasing as Adium, despite being made by Apple themselves.
Not to mention most people in Canada use MSN.
A real pipe dream would be if Apple were to make iChat's video portion open source, so other IM clients could take advantage. - Hrothgar15, on 03/13/2009, -0/+2<3 EventBox
- hnilsen, on 03/13/2009, -0/+2Yeah, let's make twitter a chatty community, just to ruin it...
- redrabbit, on 03/13/2009, -3/+5What do you think?
- dystra, on 03/13/2009, -0/+2a majority of the comments on every front page twitter article speak negativily about it, but the hype keeps coming. I think most of their subscriptions are just people wondering what the hell it is, using it for a week/day then never going back. I for one signed up an account last year, used it for a day and could not find any use for it whatsoever. i think most people on digg agree, twitter isnt a bad idea, its just_____________(fill in the blank)
- AngelBunny, on 03/14/2009, -0/+2adium is an OSX frontend of gaim and gaim became pidgin.
aka adium on OSX is nearly the same as pidgin in windows and linux. - inactive, on 03/13/2009, -0/+1Oh I know!
I wrote a chat client for Linux back in the day (before xchat). I tried to get chat support for QuakeWorld, but it was a bit difficult. You have to actually be registered and considered "online" in the game before you can just chat with people.
I'd love it if games had an external chat API, so you could talk to friends on the game. Say, have a chat with people playing World of Warcraft while you do other things.
But I seriously doubt any of that will happen. They want you to spend time in the game, not outside chatting. - glenrichardson, on 03/14/2009, -0/+1Wow, I used to use Adium - haven't for ages. Might have to look it up again.
- JKWMedia, on 03/14/2009, -0/+1That is good, twitter is so fine and it is important that Adium intrigues the twitter service
- AndrewDB, on 03/13/2009, -5/+6Wow.. Digsby's had Twitter support since it's first version.
- inactive, on 03/13/2009, -1/+2I use it on OS X, since it seemed the only decent chat app.
But I think most of the hate is toward twitter, since that really is a useless app. - ErifNeerg, on 03/14/2009, -0/+1I think i'm the only person more excited about IRC support for adium then twitter.
- sn0wkitty, on 03/14/2009, -0/+1Like the first guy said - Adium rocks, but I still use iChat. What's with that??
- vashmyvindows, on 03/14/2009, -2/+2Adium is great, but with Quicksilver, who needs...anything else?

http://www.sauria.com/blog/2007/01/18/growlified-t ... - Seekness, on 03/13/2009, -6/+6Source? The words were taken directly from the intro to the article. Were you talking to me or the author here?
- factsahoy, on 03/14/2009, -1/+1No *****. The idiotic insistence on putting different types of contacts in separate windows makes no sense. People have been bitching about this for years, but Apple fails to make a simple and obvious change.
Business as usual. - LJSeinfeld, on 03/13/2009, -3/+2wishful thinking, but I'm betting it never happens.
- Straw, on 03/13/2009, -9/+8Not a big fan of the Twitter love-in happening on Digg.
