- Bricks, on 01/15/2008, -6/+87Solid State Debt
- wonderchemist, on 01/15/2008, -6/+87A quick check of prices says $1,300 is about average for a 64 GB SSD.
- klaarn, on 01/15/2008, -1/+70the 1.8 ghz costs $300, the ssd is $1000. ouch.
- mattymayhem, on 01/15/2008, -7/+73But Steve said it's really fast!
- totorototoro, on 01/15/2008, -0/+66Dell charges the same (around $1,000) for the 64G SSD, around $550 for the 32G SSd
Getting one from newegg costs around $1,500
Its expensive, but thats not just Apple in this case. - joeycerone, on 01/15/2008, -6/+52$999 upgrade according to the apple site, not $1300.
not that thats any better, but still. - ooblez, on 01/15/2008, -1/+30buried as inaccurate:
go to the lower model and look how much to upgrade only the hd: $999.
the rest is a faster processor. - cardyology, on 01/15/2008, -13/+42Hmm pay an extra £650 (the price of a macbook) for roughly 16 less gigs of storage? Why the ***** would I do that?
Oh right, its a tiny bit faster. Where's my wallet... - Teku, on 01/15/2008, -1/+27It is not $1300 for SSD alone, $1000 for SSD and $300 1.8 ghz.
- stillasleep00, on 01/15/2008, -4/+30That doesn't make it any more Apple's fault.
- SebHughes, on 01/15/2008, -27/+45MacBook Air is a big let down in many ways.
- GMEnthusiast, on 01/15/2008, -2/+19Buried inaccurate.
Dell + 64GB SSD = +$1000
Air + 64GB SSD = +$1000
Someone is complaining about nothing. Both companies charge exactly the same amount of money for the upgrade. - PirateFSM, on 01/15/2008, -4/+20How are you being punished... Are you new to technology?
- ElBob, on 01/15/2008, -1/+16http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8 ...
Can anyone read that number to me? Its $1500 dollars for a 64gb solid state, which is bigger in physical size than the one in the Macbook Air. Please explain to me how Apple is ripping us off again. - inactive, on 01/15/2008, -6/+20I think you guys are forgetting the purpose of this notebook. It's not for everyone, I don't need one, but if I was a business man who traveled from location to location and wanted something ultra portable then I'm all for it.
- totorototoro, on 01/15/2008, -0/+12edstate, everything looks pretty sealed in, including memory, battery, and hard drive. (that would explain Apple providing 2G standard for a change)
- A14049752, on 01/15/2008, -1/+12It IS really fast, and the battery life is considerably longer. The only thing I see this being good for, though, is helping bring the price of solid state drives down....eventually.
- DrDigg, on 01/15/2008, -0/+11$1000 is the price of the upgrade for apple too, the $300 is if you upgrade the processor. So Dell $1000 = Apple $1000. Gizmodo just can't read.
- shredswithpiks, on 01/15/2008, -0/+11also it's rugged... you know, if you spend a lot of time dropping your macbook
- gordonf238, on 01/15/2008, -3/+13Faster, much more reliable, easier on the power. Plenty of people will pay for that. Ones that can afford it, excluding you.
- DJNephilim, on 01/15/2008, -0/+9The upgrade for the drive is $999, not $1300. The summary for this article is horrible.
- surf314, on 01/15/2008, -1/+10Honestly now that someone is doing this the price should come down.
- ElBob, on 01/15/2008, -0/+9Yeah, but was it a 1.8 inch drive? Also, drive prices for SSD are generally not linear.
- DrDigg, on 01/15/2008, -0/+9Hey gizmodo - way to read the website
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 01/15/2008, -1/+9In small amounts it's cheaper, moron.
- devin_mm, on 01/15/2008, -1/+9the upgrade is 1300 the total computer cost is 3100
- megagram, on 01/15/2008, -2/+10Did you ever consider that there is a price difference between Dell's default 2.5" drive and Apple's default 1.8" drive? The $850 and $999 prices aren't for the SSD drive alone. They are "in addition to" the cost of the default hard disk.
- pak314, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7Or more precisely, $300 to switch from a 1.6 GHz to a 1.8 GHz processor.
- Greer70, on 01/15/2008, -4/+11This whole Keynote was underwhelming.
- vapblack, on 01/15/2008, -1/+8Funny, but true.
- ElBob, on 01/15/2008, -1/+8Agreed. This article is fudging the numbers by adding in the 300$ processor upgrade, and they aren't comparing to market price. Buried as well.
- jesperhh, on 01/15/2008, -1/+8But you forget most business men don't buy macs - or at least i have yet to see a suit using a mac..
- leexy, on 01/15/2008, -0/+7Yep, compared to the lousy 4200rpm hard drive.
- kahrn, on 01/15/2008, -1/+6You're an ignorant fool if you'd upgrade purely on the basis on speed. SSD has it's benefits, speed isn't really the primary one.
- edstate, on 01/15/2008, -1/+6Can anyone tell me if you can swap the 80G ATA w/ an SSD down the road?
- DrDigg, on 01/15/2008, -0/+5actually the upgrade is $999 if you add it to the slower processor
- macunknown, on 01/15/2008, -0/+5If you configure the base MacBook Air it's a $999 option. The extra $300 includes a faster processor. That same SSD will run you $1300-2000 by itself. It's priced similar to Dell.
- scott88008, on 01/15/2008, -5/+10Power consumption? Very important in a portable device.
- yelkereb, on 01/15/2008, -0/+5The HD upgrade is the exact same price, but I know, math is hard.
- Firehed, on 01/15/2008, -0/+4Tiny? Do you have any idea how bad the seek times on a 4200RPM drive are? I'm surprised Apple even made that an option - it'll give horrible first impressions.
- JFallon126, on 01/15/2008, -2/+6Buried for inaccurate...SSD is $999 more. Still pricey, though.
- dhjames, on 01/15/2008, -1/+5Regardless of whether it's $999 or $1300 it's still a ripoff considering the 80 GB is a 1.8" which are notorious for crashing so you almost need the SSD. Taking a look at all the specs, I'd honestly say this is one of the worst laptops I've ever seen. It is pretty though, I'll definitely give them that.
- inactive, on 01/15/2008, -2/+6that is seriously not a business laptop. its more for those style freak yuppies. Businessmen prefer function of form and would rather have a thinkpad X series rather then this.
- jkoke, on 01/15/2008, -0/+4All macs have a 1-year warranty standard, you unredeemable douche.
- plizard, on 01/15/2008, -1/+5are you lisdesic?
- djdole, on 01/15/2008, -1/+5No big surprise here. That's pretty standard for SSD.
Buried - devin_mm, on 01/15/2008, -0/+4True enough I'm just trying to clarify the title and copy.
- Radan, on 01/15/2008, -3/+7Why is NgrHader being dugged down? The main target group for this kind of computer IS businessmen and similar who travels a lot and only wants to take their hand luggage with them. It's expensive, yes, but not more than most other Ultra Portable computers (also, look at the freaking size that thing! Someday, somewhere, someone will cut one of his or her fingers off on that thing).
As a photographer, I actually think that it looks kind of neat as it would most likely fit into my bag even with all my camera gear with me, and without adding any noticeable weight, which would make it possible for me to really sync and fix my photos directly in the field (though, as of now my MBP will do fine). - stevey5036, on 01/15/2008, -1/+5Gotta love the standard 4200rpm PATA HDD. Steve said during the conference that they didn't sacrifice for the display and keyboard.. which is true.. but they totally sacrificed other stuff. One USB port? no ethernet? a MONO speaker? Built in battery? GTFO.
- cardyology, on 01/15/2008, -2/+6I'd sacrifice the "benifits" of SSD for £650 anyday.
Macbook Air < macbook, Apple TV & iPhone for the same $$$ -
