- tylerhauser, on 12/15/2007, -1/+15Wow. This is quite useful!
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -1/+12Good - now I can spy on my kids. :)
- etx313, on 12/16/2007, -1/+10Because Remote Desktop is a separate package they charge you for.
- optoomistic, on 12/16/2007, -1/+9why did they leave this out?
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -1/+8They wanted you to buy Apple Remote Desktop
- jmreid, on 12/16/2007, -0/+7Right click works for me
- chadosan, on 12/15/2007, -1/+8Cool, I'll definitely be using this.
- granitemouse, on 12/16/2007, -0/+5Make sure your routers have UPnP enabled. Make sure in Sharing under System Preferences that File Sharing and Screen Sharing are checked on your Macs. Make sure that Remote Management is not checked. Then under Back to my Mac in the .Mac System Preference, click Stop, and then Start again. Do this on all of your machines. That's what made it work for me.
- deuceswilde, on 12/16/2007, -0/+5You know, it's not solely because of the bias that your comment gets buried. It was juvenile and contributed nothing, plus if you can show me another operating system that had this built in functionally on a system level ten years ago I'll digg every comment you ever make.
- DigDugDigger, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4That toolbar they add is the exact same one in Apple Remote Desktop.
- shibbay, on 12/16/2007, -0/+4These are the good articles!
- rhaleuk, on 12/16/2007, -0/+3This is really cool. Thanks for sharing this. I use Screen Sharing to remote to my Mac Mini under my TV so this is perfect!
- lotides, on 12/16/2007, -2/+4I would say that this is a horrible thing to do. But, eh. Kids these days are in to some weird crap. Just don't be surprised when you stumble across some of it.
- peterinjapan, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2You can also type vnc://myip anywhere and drag it to the desktop, which will make a link that brings up that machine automatically (password saved in keychain). This rules plenty over Timbuktu (which is still a hugely convenient tool for me).
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Yes.
- colonels1020, on 12/16/2007, -1/+3Dugg for the new beta of MacWorld.com
- kick52, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2No, they are talking about using the 'secret' functionality in Screen Sharing - no one ever said Apple invented anything new.
- PPCG4, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Thank Jeebus. I was going nuts without those buttons I was used to in Remote Desktop through Tiger.
- Phisolo, on 12/16/2007, -0/+2Just innovation for the mac. VNC and its cousins have been around for quite some time. (Mac and PC). The level of integration into the file browser is what is new. Having it be this easy is true to form for the mac.
It is not new, just improved. - centic, on 12/15/2007, -0/+1Back to my Mac started working last weekend for me out of no where. Make sure your routers have UPnP enabled. For me, both do, however I can only access my iMac at work from my MacBook at home -- I'm unable to access my MacBook at home from my iMac at work.
- tkamen, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1FINALLY! I just got my first Mac and couldn't for the life of me find a good and free VNC viewer. Chicken of the VNC is really slow and nothing else seems to work as well as this does.
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1No, you can't turn it off.
- ajchavar, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1this is fantastic, too bad its not the default. this is all i really need out of remote desktop anyway.
- kenplaysviola, on 12/16/2007, -1/+2Is there any encryption when using the Apple Remote Desktop?
- tylermoyn, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1Is it on by default? Can you toggle it on/off? Because at times on my say a home network there might not be a need, and encryption would only slow down process...
- kick52, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1Make sure you have the end ' or it won't work.
- ewcost, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1Wow! This is amazing. It makes Screen Sharing so much more useful.
- mountaincable, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1I don't think encryption would really result in any slowdown on a home 100 MBps network.
- damonic, on 12/16/2007, -0/+1Or forward port 5200 to the IP of the computer you want to access.
- LocoMonkey, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing 'NSToolbar Configuration ControlToolbar' -dict-add 'TB Item Identifiers' '(Scale,Control,Share,Curtain,Capture,FullScreen,GetClipboard,SendClipboard,Quality)
- sanarchy, on 02/22/2008, -0/+1Woot. I'm so glad it wasn't just me that back to my mac wasn't working for. Then again, I think they supposedly improved it in 10.5.2 upgrade (however I am no longer a .mac subscriber so I can't test it). I did find that a simple DynDNS account and mapping your desired port (5900) the system you want to control remotely will help get you in screen sharing wise (just enter your IP:port or your dyndns account: sub.homelinux.org:5900).
Enjoy. - neodorian, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1Oh noes! A command line!
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -1/+1that last command doesn't work, just gives me quote> when I try to run it.
- MattS, on 12/17/2007, -1/+1The bias of *my* comment?!!! Did you READ the article?! My contribution was a spotlight on the small, ridiculous nature of the article, the fact that we made promote to the front page of digg.com. As for showing you other embedded functionality from 10 years ago - I have been using tty, telnet, and 3270 emulation in Unix and Xenix since before you were born (I'll bet). You best add me as a friend so that you can better digg all my comments! ;)
- dyranios2, on 12/15/2007, -3/+2Phew I thought it was just for me that back to my mac wasn't working.
- PathDaemon, on 12/16/2007, -2/+1The exact command is:
defaults write com.apple.ScreenSharing ShowBonjourBrowser_Debug 1
You must have made a mistake. - djpants428, on 12/16/2007, -1/+0If you are running the full version of ARD, you can definitely turn encryption off, or just encrypt keystrokes
- fishbert, on 12/16/2007, -3/+1"Make sure your routers have UPnP enabled..."
No thank you. I'm a big boy, and like having control over my network.
When signing into .Mac and enabling BTMM, TCP port 443 is used. For connections between machines, BTMM typically uses UDP port 4500.
-- http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307 ... - stewacide, on 12/16/2007, -5/+3VNC-enabled computers (including non-macs) that advertize themselves as such using ZeroConfig/Bonjour already show up in the finder sidebar automatically.
I still use Chicken of the VNC since Screen Sharing.app doesn't seem to support right-clicking at all. - Ex3poo, on 12/16/2007, -7/+0Screen sharing.... More like Screen Staring,Thats SEXY!
- inactive, on 12/16/2007, -9/+1Um free VNC has been out how long? PC net-meeting out how long?
Dont tell me some Apple fan is claiming innovation here? - MattS, on 12/16/2007, -19/+2digg users are excited about 10 year old functionality?!?! oh, its an apple story...
/sarcasm
...waiting for my plummet into the comment depths....
