AdBlock for Safari 3 with Leopard support.
safariadblock.sourceforge.net — This is the first Safari 3 AdBlock plugin that I have found to have support for Leopard.
- 1146 diggs
- digg it
- ploke, on 12/09/2007, -0/+122I've been using this for about four days and it is a lot better than the CSS scripts that I was using before. On the down side, I didn't get to be the lucky 10 000th digg visitor.
- djh816, on 12/09/2007, -1/+4how's it compare to pithhelmet? (if you've used that is)
- ploke, on 12/09/2007, -3/+3haven't used pith helmet in ages. In tiger I used camino and I don't think there is an updated pith helmet for safari 3.
- lickmygiggle, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4there is.
http://www.culater.net/thc/index.php?entry=/Develo ...- so1omon, on 12/10/2007, -2/+2Except that for whatever reason, all of the versions of PithHelmet released for Safari 3 have crashed Safari for me. I install PithHelmet and Safari opens just fine. But if I try to open a page, it hangs it up completely.
- djh816, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3after doing my own comparison, both on safari 3, they are about the same speedwise (neither really slows down page loading) and pithhelmet has the option to block more which gets rid of facebook left-side ads. Think I'll stick with it.
- tpv2066, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4Agreed. Pithhelmet, esp w/ regex rules you make is far superior
- lickmygiggle, on 12/09/2007, -0/+4there is.
- flyboy47c, on 12/10/2007, -7/+110,000 visitor, is this a joke?
- the_snitch, on 12/10/2007, -1/+5No, but your IQ is.
- kolywater, on 12/10/2007, -2/+1just curious... is there any advantage to using this plugin instead of editing one's hosts file?
- zeeky, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1it collapses the html elements so you dont get big "ad gaps"
- osage, on 12/10/2007, -2/+1ERROR - it not only blocks ads.
In my case. I forgot my username for Flicr.
I could not get to the renew page.
- joeycerone, on 12/09/2007, -5/+7This is great news.
- jordn, on 12/09/2007, -2/+16Excellent news. Now we can browse the web as it was supposed to be viewed, without all of that "COLLECT YOUR FREE GREEN CARD HERE!!1" crap.
kudos to the devs behind this.- the_snitch, on 12/10/2007, -4/+5I can has green card?
- CaptainAO, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8Yeah, this is a must have plug-in for Safari users. You don't have to configure anything and it doesn't block the CSS elements of websites like all the other ad blockers I've tried for Safari.
- stalefries, on 12/09/2007, -3/+17I'm not sure about this (I don't use Safari), but I think PithHelmet has Leopard support, and it can do adblocking as well.
- djsim, on 12/09/2007, -2/+5The only working Leopard-ready version of PithHelmet is in beta.
- AceTracer, on 12/09/2007, -1/+12And yet works perfectly fine, as I've been using it since it came out.
- djh816, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2and has many more options and blocking capabilities
- CATSCEO, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4and its not free
- mozzep, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2yea it is. I never paid for it but I use it and it's not cracked.
- zweben, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1It's not free but it's only $5 and it never forces you to buy it.
- MonkeyFarts, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1How are you getting it to work? Not a single one of the releases have so much as loaded up for me. I run the installer, leave PlugSuit enabled, and all of my plugins except for PithHelmet load up and work. What gives?
- djh816, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2and has many more options and blocking capabilities
- AceTracer, on 12/09/2007, -1/+12And yet works perfectly fine, as I've been using it since it came out.
- Takuro, on 12/10/2007, -1/+6PithHelmet is a lot better than AdBlock. It gives you more control over what content is actually blocked. I've found that AdBlock blocks some things that it shouldn't, while failing to block the things it should at times.
- thewfirestarter, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2PithHelmet isn't free...
- flipme, on 12/10/2007, -2/+1Just check the I paid checkbox in the settings and it's free!
- djsim, on 12/09/2007, -2/+5The only working Leopard-ready version of PithHelmet is in beta.
- z0mbie2099, on 12/09/2007, -46/+2Welcome to the club. Please use Firefox to stay ahead.
- Me1000, on 12/09/2007, -2/+48Safari is so much faster than FF on my Mac! FF2 doesn't pass the ACID2 test, I believe FF3 does, but it is still in beta.
So how about you let me use whatever browser I want, and keep quiet? - davesawyer, on 12/09/2007, -0/+12I used Firefox for a long time until I upgraded to Leopard. Safari's speed on Leopard is unmatched by Firefox.
- lgc90, on 12/09/2007, -0/+18Meh, I use firefox on Windows, but stick to Safari on Mac. It's much faster, and very well integrated into the operating system as well as .Mac.
- manitoba98xp, on 12/09/2007, -1/+3Please, let's not turn this into a browser war. I'm a Firefox/Mac user (mainly due to extensions), but from many perspectives (speed, thinness, integration, compliance), Safari trumps it. But we all know which we prefer, and I doubt we're going to convince anyone to switch either way.
Thank you.

- happyseamonster, on 12/09/2007, -6/+3For me, the most important thing is web pages no longer hang while waiting for ads... I've had it for Firefox (my fav) and now Safari! Thanks!
- theblueprint, on 12/09/2007, -1/+27Right on, this is enough to get me using Safari again.
- unloud, on 12/09/2007, -1/+10Wow, someone read my mind. I've been looking for something like this since those annoying blinking ads started showing up on here. It's kind of sad that I used to consider Digg's ads the least intrusive out there.
- osage, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1expirience- it not only blocks ads.
In my case. I forgot my username for Flicr.
I could not get to the renew page.
So it blocks functionality... Anyone?- mlostracco, on 12/10/2007, -0/+2Then turn off blocking for a second, visit the page to renew, and turn it back on again. Plus, maybe it's because you're visiting Flicr instead of Flickr. :-P
- osage, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1expirience- it not only blocks ads.
- nakile, on 12/09/2007, -0/+14Wow. Installed it and it blocked everything flawlessly out of the box without any configuration. It just works. :p
- IslandSaint, on 12/09/2007, -1/+4Anyone have this installed? Does it work? Any downside?
- MBarnwell, on 12/09/2007, -2/+3http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/1029/picture1fo ...
seems good to me...neat - MBarnwell, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2i don't comment alot on digg and don't really know why it won't allow that link to work, it was just a screenshot of this page w/all the ads gone via the out of the box configuration on OS 10.5.1
- hoshizakistar, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1the link works, but imageshack links go down as soon as they're posted on digg. they don't like heavy traffic.
- Me1000, on 12/10/2007, -1/+2No, it is because image shack blocks digg traffic!
- seventoes, on 12/10/2007, -2/+1Just hit refresh, worked for me.
- hoshizakistar, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1that's what I said. just less concisely.
- Me1000, on 12/10/2007, -1/+2No, it is because image shack blocks digg traffic!
- hoshizakistar, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1the link works, but imageshack links go down as soon as they're posted on digg. they don't like heavy traffic.
- StarManta, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Some JS functionality (I've noticed one button on OKCupid) seems to not work.
- MonkeyFarts, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1I installed it, and then my other plugins (ForgetMeNot, SafariSource) broke, and Safari would hang and crash after I loaded up a new tab and went to a new webpage (even Google). So I trashed all of the Safari AdBlock files from my computer, and guess what? These problems persist. AdBlock did something to totally screw my copy of Safari. I can't use tabs. Yay...
Seriously, I think something is totally screwed with my copy of Safari. Everybody says PithHelmet works for them, and I can't even get it to so much as load up. Safari AdBlock seems to be working for pretty much everybody, and it screws my copy of Safari. I had the AcidSearch beta installed and it worked fine for a couple of weeks, but then out of nowhere it sputtered and died, and screwed with Safari's keyboard shortcuts until I removed it. I installed Leopard fresh. WTF?- turpenine, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1you can delete safari and reinstall it.
- MonkeyFarts, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Where would I download 3.0.4 though? I can only find the public beta.
- turpenine, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1you can delete safari and reinstall it.
- jordan314, on 12/13/2007, -0/+1I'm having an impossible time with this too. Yahoo mail search no longer works and I can't attach files to upload forms anymore. Uninstalling.
- MBarnwell, on 12/09/2007, -2/+3http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/1029/picture1fo ...
- sorahn, on 12/09/2007, -1/+59now all we have to do is sit back and wait for the forthcoming http://whysafariisblocked.com
- IslandSaint, on 12/09/2007, -20/+1Why?
- macguy815, on 12/09/2007, -3/+20It's not. ***** off!
- iNunchuk, on 12/09/2007, -0/+8The Safari Icon is Awesome on that Page
- avihappy, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11That is the new standard size of icons in Leopard. 512x512
- Laxaloot, on 12/09/2007, -1/+5Great, but I can't use Safari as my main browser until I can use stumble upon and make the new pages force to tabs.
- konstantinos88, on 12/09/2007, -5/+2We can only hope Saft comes out for Safari again...
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2it is out. it's in beta. using it now, but beware! it's a bit unstable.
don't know about stumble upon, though
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2it is out. it's in beta. using it now, but beware! it's a bit unstable.
- macguy815, on 12/09/2007, -1/+9Just hold down command when you click on a link, opens it in a new tab in the background.
- Vician, on 12/09/2007, -2/+1This doesn't always work though. If you use something like the Google Notifier and open up say a link to an email. If you want to visit your Inbox, no matter how you click on the link, it always forces a new window. Plus, if I always want to open links in a new tab if they are new windows, why should I be forced to hold down an extra key constantly?
- staticdisaster, on 12/09/2007, -0/+0The latest SafariStand plugin can open every new window in a tab. Even when using GMail.

- ivanov, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Or use Stand for Safari...
- theMaxx, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Exactly!
- konstantinos88, on 12/09/2007, -5/+2We can only hope Saft comes out for Safari again...
- hybam, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Works just great
- Chirp08, on 12/09/2007, -0/+5whoa, best thing I've ever clicked on digg
- konstantinos88, on 12/09/2007, -2/+8There's also PithHelmet which I've been using for quite some time now, and I haven't seen an ad since:
http://www.culater.net/software/PithHelmet/PithHel ...
Just keep in mind this is only for Mac.- neiltc13, on 12/10/2007, -9/+1Manages to block every YouTube video and plenty of other useful stuff. Also has a stupid, confusing interface and a silly icon in the menu bar. No thanks!
- zweben, on 12/10/2007, -0/+51) It doesn't block YouTube videos for me.
2) You shouldn't even have to look at the interface.
3) You can move the icon into the Safari menu instead having its own menu, right in the preferences.
- zweben, on 12/10/2007, -0/+51) It doesn't block YouTube videos for me.
- neiltc13, on 12/10/2007, -9/+1Manages to block every YouTube video and plenty of other useful stuff. Also has a stupid, confusing interface and a silly icon in the menu bar. No thanks!
- Stirk, on 12/09/2007, -0/+6This plugin and Inquisitor ( http://www.inquisitorx.com/safari/ ) keep me attached to Safari.
Couldn't live without them.- TheNik, on 12/10/2007, -1/+3Yeah, Inquisitor is so awesome. I use Safari all of the time but I wish it crashed less. Digg and YouTube apparently hate it.
- Rupan, on 12/09/2007, -2/+2OMG finally. After I found Inquisitor like Stirk said the only reason I wished FF was as smooth and integrated as Safari was AdBlock. And, I love that finally I have a reason to be thankful for having Leopard other than superiority in basic OS as Tiger.
- 7scout7, on 12/09/2007, -3/+1wow, thanks for the link ! .... works great !
- davesawyer, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3Been using this for about a week. It has worked flawlessly since install. If you have Leopard, you should be just about out of excuses for switching to the much faster Safari browser.
- Scarfy, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1Now if only Safari had foxmarks.
- AceTracer, on 12/09/2007, -3/+5PithHelmet is way more robust than this.
- zephc, on 12/09/2007, -0/+7Works, but doesn't collapse blocked elements/containers
- llwybyr, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2Yes, finally! This is exactly the plug-in Safari has needed. Also, for those of us that use the WebKit nightlies, this works, as opposed to PithHelmet.
- zongamin, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1Safariblock works too. Has for ages.
- mateo60, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2I thought this screenshot of the ad on this page was ironic.
http://grandpagriffith.com/images/digg_screenshot. ...- mateo60, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2aw the comment system screwed up my URL. sorry.
- arjung, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3wanna give us the right one?
- DarkDx, on 12/09/2007, -0/+5http://grandpagriffith.com/images/digg_screenshot. ...
- Me1000, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1not ironic, but humorous none the less!
- mateo60, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2aw the comment system screwed up my URL. sorry.
- Imok20, on 12/09/2007, -3/+0It's great. And coincidentally, I am no longer the 10,000th visitor to the site after installing this. And those weren't ads, no, no those were the real deal! I bet you guys and girls wish you were the 10,000th visitor to the site... but no, I was the lucky one.
- mateo60, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Me neither!
I was always fine having ads on Digg, since I'm a regular user of it. But lately, ads such as the "10,000 Visitor" ads have gone too far. As of now, I have no more ads on Digg. - michaelz92, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1*slow clap*
- mateo60, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Me neither!
- thetin, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1hallelujah!
- setrusko, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1Nice.
- simonshek, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1Great!
- zeppo, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3If this really blocks the actual downloading of unwanted content as opposed to just hiding ads which apparently all other safari "ad blockers" do then I will be on safari :)
I might even actually donate to them.- zongamin, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1Safariblock http://fsbsoftware.com/
- DannyX0, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1sweet, this means i don't have to use a stylesheet for ad blocking!
- mingistech, on 12/09/2007, -5/+1How is this any different than the default "Block Pop-Up Windows" option that Safari already has?
I have that enabled, it blocks all pop-up adds.
I'm not dissing this app... i'd really like to know.- mateo60, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3not just pop-up ads, it blocks banners too.
- Burn, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3It blocks inline ads as well as popups.
- zongamin, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1you ARE joking?
- metaphysical, on 12/09/2007, -5/+3Um, SafariBlock has been working fine for over a month, dunno where you've been.
- nevenmrgan, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1After installation, nytimes.com still has a lot of ads. Ikea.com, on the other hand, is completely broken.
- ivanov, on 12/09/2007, -0/+0...which is why I've been using SafariBlock for the past 2 years, and which continues to work with Leopard...
- TheNik, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, after restarting Safari infinity times and punching your computer.
- panchro, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Ikea.com works for me.
- ivanov, on 12/09/2007, -0/+0...which is why I've been using SafariBlock for the past 2 years, and which continues to work with Leopard...
- BayAreaKing, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Awesome. Now if only they had a DownThemAll plug-in...
- derubermensch, on 12/09/2007, -2/+6They need to work on porting this to the Windows Safari community.
- 2Deluxe, on 12/10/2007, -2/+2Bahahahaha. Windows Safari community, good one!
- seenxu, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1why it won't have support for 10.4.x users?
- tpv2066, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4Pithhelmet FTW, far far better.
- llwybyr, on 12/10/2007, -3/+1Except PithHelmet doesn't work with WebKit nightlies and it doesn't support AdBlock-style lists. Support for AdBlock-style lists means you can use the excellent blocking lists that have already been put together by the AdBlock community.
- FredB7, on 12/10/2007, -1/+4Wrong. SafariBlock[1] has been working fine since 10 Sep 2007 and is better IMO.
[1]http://fsbsoftware.com/SafariBlock.html - P373Y, on 12/10/2007, -2/+2or you could just use camino
- Me1000, on 12/10/2007, -0/+4or not...
- JonLatane, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, because who ever needs to rearrange their tabs? If that's fixed in 1.6, it may actually be usable, but until then it's nothing more than a novel (and admittedly cool) implementation of the Gecko engine using Cocoa and some other OSX features, at least for me.
- orbitalpunk, on 12/10/2007, -1/+4Pithhelmet is much better.
- JFallon126, on 12/10/2007, -2/+1I find the built-in adblock in Camino works just as good...
- taizoshiozaki, on 12/10/2007, -0/+5I hope they port this to iPhone version.
- dcharti, on 12/10/2007, -6/+2As an entirely web-based author, feeding my family based on my income from the ads on the site I write for, I'd like to ask that you occasionally switch off software like this and give us some appreciation for our hard work at least every now and then.
After all, without ads, even digg wouldn't be able to exist.- TheNik, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3If your website is worth reading you can sell sponsor links to companies. Voila, unobtrusive income.
- mlostracco, on 12/10/2007, -0/+7It's because of the flashing, jiggling, sound-playing, intrusive, fraudulent "congratulations" ads that so many people are blocking them now. And sadly, that now includes Digg. The advertisers/spammers did it to themselves out of sheer greed, and now that's coming back to bite them.
- neckaros, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1I agree with you. We need an adblock that only block some intrusive ads
- zongamin, on 12/11/2007, -0/+1Sorry but you might as well be arguing in favour of spam. If people visit your site they have no interest at all in seeing some crappy flash ad popping up in front of them. The same way that you filter this crap out of your email, we choose to filter the website we view.
- weiran, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Already had ad-blocking for Safari in Leopard for a month now with PithHelmet.
- sparced, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1That was easy. I've had problems with the Guardian site working with Safari but not any more.
- antonymarceles, on 12/10/2007, -2/+1HOLY MOLY... Mother of God... This is freakin amazing...
- Viremia, on 12/10/2007, -1/+1works a treat
and far better than a kick in the crotch - knodi, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3OMG finally.
- richardiscool, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1Is there a tiger version somewhere?
- zongamin, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1yep - I've been using for a while now
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/ ...
- zongamin, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1yep - I've been using for a while now
