- fkr3, on 10/11/2007, -15/+224I think people are starting to realise first and foremost it's an ipod and a cell phone... both of which they had before.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -47/+231Everything seems strangely quiet for being immediately after the launch. Is everyone sort of underwhelmed like I was? I'm being serious too, I actually expected this to be much more 'Wow.' than it has been.
- WiseWeasel, on 10/15/2007, -55/+226I just cancelled my iPhone order from the Apple Store. These issues need to be resolved before I plunk down $600 for this thing. Now I'm kinda happy they were sold out at the AT&T stores near me...
- shadowspawn, on 11/12/2007, -24/+161@gafasiesornivek:
I think it's like going out on a date with a girl who could be a supermodel. She has her quirks in conversation, but is really really good looking. Perfect face, perfect body. Moves well.
After you land her in bed you realize you could've had more action, satisfaction, and fun with a wet pillow.
Yes everyone saw you with her, yes everyone knows that you have something about you that got her, yes some people are jealous and mean, some pat you on the back... but the last thing you want to tell your friends is that the experience wasn't worth the money. So you stay quiet in your chair and wonder what's fundamentally wrong with the world.
Except we're talking Apple fans, who (most, not all) keep mum about disappointments unless in a group. People are wondering who's going to be the first to step in and have a following. - evilemma, on 10/11/2007, -36/+162Awesome list - I can't believe how many features are missing - stuff that should be stock standard by now! It's nice to have a complete list clearly laid out in point form. Thanks for your time in compiling this list!
- waterloo, on 10/11/2007, -42/+157So they cripple some of the phones capabilities (blue tooth, removable memory, saving files from the net) to ensure a continued revenue flow, forcing you to get these things from the Apple plantation- Why am i not surprised?
- eightyd, on 10/11/2007, -21/+106I'm just as tired of the iPhone hate as much as I am of its rampant fanboyism. I can't wait for a month from now, when seemingly every third post on digg and every damn article on ars/engadget/etc doesn't talk about the iPhone. Make it go away; we have real things to talk about, like Paris Hilton.
- resta6, on 01/12/2009, -38/+110iPhone reminds me of PS3, everyone was riding Sony's dick up until the moment it released, then 2 weeks later they couldn't give them away.
I know people will compare iPhone to iPod, but there is a difference, iPod doesn't cost $600 and there is no 2 year commitment - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -28/+93Yeah, when the first iPod came out it was ripped apart, too. I envision it being a big success as it is revved a few times.
- DreamVsPs2, on 10/11/2007, -11/+77Didn't we already know most of the stuff on the list?
No video, no mms and everything else was already posted before the iPhone even came out. - koonchu, on 10/11/2007, -25/+86did I just hear someone say that they shouldn't expect much for a $600.00 phone?
You, my friend, are a spoiled douchebag and wouldn't know the value of a dollar if it taint-***** you. - tarynme, on 10/11/2007, -14/+70I try to load the page; Safari quits "unexpectedly" on me. Seems my Mac doesn't want me to read anything negative about this thing.
- Alegoo92, on 10/11/2007, -36/+91I love mine, and really these tedious dissapointments dont phase me. I know they'd effect other people though.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -35/+84My Treo does all the things the iPhone does not. The iPhone is just a joke by Apple to see how many idiots will buy a fashion accessory. People are basically going to buy this thing because it 'looks nice'- but 'looks nice' just won't cut it.
- oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/11/2007, -37/+85i bought one. it works as advertised, i'm not sure what the rest of you were expecting. there were some activation issues that were unfortunate. but, if you're not realistic enough to know that 1000's of people trying to activate a device at the *exact* same time, might cause some problems/latency issues, you probably set your sights too high from the beginning.
- portis, on 10/11/2007, -6/+47You don't need the iPhone to listen to MP3s or the radio anyways. Proper smartphones can do that with absolute ease and more for less!
- strangewill, on 10/11/2007, -27/+63Whats with this "it's okay, they'll update the phone later" crap from the people who rant a rave about Microsoft doing the same.
Hypocrisy! - Legionnaire, on 10/11/2007, -3/+37"I dont take pictures with my phone"
"I dont use the web all that often on my phone, my Macbook handles that better"
Wait, why would you even buy such a "feature-laden" phone if you weren't going to use any of it's biggest features? oh wait.
"I want to MAKE CALLS, and maybe get directions. THATS IT"
You don't even want to play music on it either? Well then don't drop $600 on an iPhone. That's why I'm not. - *Ica*, on 10/11/2007, -9/+42No MMS? Really? That's popular in the UK so the Euro iPhone better have that. Its a basic.
- Cwo655321, on 10/11/2007, -5/+38the point is that you paid for a fully functioning phone now, not a year from now.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -25/+57iPhone also has a non-standard 3:2 aspect ratio which makes it a bitch for watching movies (why couldn't they just release a 16:9 one?) and it annoys me that Apple say it's "widescreen" when it really isn't.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+33didn't you read the article? it has zero games.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+34leave them alone; it's so funny trying to see them justify their purchase.
- SilentRamble42, on 10/11/2007, -1/+29Even a lot of the non-smartphones do that for less than the smartphones
- break99, on 10/11/2007, -9/+36you got it sir.
- Slothy88, on 10/11/2007, -6/+31"-- This is a phone, not a mini computer. I want to MAKE CALLS, and maybe get directions. THATS IT"
You would not buy an iPhone if you only want to make calls with it. - strangewill, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28Smart phone != cellphone. It should have better features than my $30 phone.
- lukas88, on 10/11/2007, -7/+31Its standard apple BS, coming up with a device that COULD be so much better but is crippled insanely. No microSD slot because they want you to have to throw down $100 bucks to get 4 more GB instead of just $40. Bluetooth could be so great, connecting you to other iphones in the area, but nope, they want to regulate that too. I never bought an iPod because it demanded the use of iTunes instead of just treating it like a external HD. Yes, apple is a jealous company, if you buy one of their products they want you to have to eventually buy ALL of their products just to get it to work fully. They don't care about playing nice, letting their products be easily upgradeable or compatible with other hardware.
A real nerd will buy a nokia n95 or openmoko. If you buy an iPhone, chances are you are doing it just to be seen using it. Trust me, the touch screen is going to get old, fast. - strangewill, on 10/11/2007, -7/+30It's OSX, it was the big hype and why geeks were willing to fork out $600 + the 2 year get raped by AT&T plan. All complaints are valid. They bought a smart phone, not a cell phone, hence the complaints.
- nodonoug, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23FTA...
"5. Web browser is slow, even over WLAN."....I guess that explains why they're all too busy to post here...
"14. NO games. None." ....but I don't think they're playing games on the iPhone. - liuping, on 10/11/2007, -17/+38Many of those items were know before the release. I hate it when people bitch about stuff that they should have known about before the even bought the product...
As far as the keyboard sucking, I've had mine for 1/2 a day and can already type pretty darn quickly. I'm pleasantly surprised.
Safari seems quite fast to me. perhaps because I'm use the the total POS browser in my Blackberry 8700.
There will be many improvements to the software coming soon and for Free (Apple has already said so publicly). It's not perfect, but it's already far more refined than any other Smartphone I've tried (and I've tried a lot of them). - mos6507, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23The question is, will Apple do it in a software patch or just put you on the hardware upgrade treadmill? By not allowing 3rd party development, that leads me to believe that they will just force people to buy the next iphone just to upgrade the software features.
- HPCELarry, on 10/11/2007, -7/+27The problem is, for $500-$600 I expect a phone to have at least some of those features. I don't have enough free money on hand to waste on a device that just looks nice, but has a functionality of something 10 times less expensive.
- Barman, on 10/11/2007, -10/+30to all the yupiies who bought one: HA HA!
And just like the ipod, the iphone probably wont be useful until the 3rd or 4th generation. Their are so many better cell's (better priced too) out there - miniboss, on 10/11/2007, -2/+20You have to remember that the Razr came out with much hoopla also but once the "cool" factor ended it was just an expensive phone.
- Stonedonkey, on 10/11/2007, -6/+24The iPod was not missing basic MP3 player functionality. At least, there wasn't much of a standard at the time. This time, there is. The iPhone is missing features that have been core features in cell phone networks for years, like MMS, voice dialing, and speed dial. For its price, it is competing against devices that have document viewing, video, email attachment of multiple image files, games, a file browser, and a sufficiently speedy HTTP browser. It is simply not acceptable at its price point. It is a cut-down cellphone PDA that uses iTunes to manage its music files. For a minimum $500 entry fee.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/11/2007, -4/+22I personally want to wait until the next model comes out so that Apple has the opportunity to fix bugs and other problems. After all, this is an expensive device and I want everything working properly before I buy it. I also want to see larger storage capacities.
- JettaMan, on 10/15/2007, -18/+35I canceled too. This was the one Apple product that I thought had potential over the more powerful/open competitor products. Now I read this and it looks like they severely crippled things. Once again, Apple is for people who don't know much about technology.
- Emery, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19In the less than 24 hours Ive owned this phone, I know my mobile experience has forever changed. This guys list is mostly true but I dont think any of these omissions/problems are game killers.
My overall unbiased observations thus far:
1. The error correction when typing is very good. If you dont worry about making mistakes and just plow through you can type pretty quickly. It even knows expletives. :-) Ive already gotten fairly good at the one finger tap. Moving to thumbs will take a lil practice. It automatically adds punctuation such as apostrophes when typing things like I've or don't. It also capitalizes certain nouns like peoples names. The keyboard does NOT suck. This dude has had it for less than 24 hours and he thinks hes gonna be a pro? It took me a week to get good with my Moto Q and that had a real keyboard.
2. The screen is fantastic. I knew it would have a good screen but this is the best screen ive seen on any device, ever. I haven't watched and movies on it yet but in the UI, blacks are so rich and dark youd think it was using local dimming to achieve this.
3. Youtube looks great. As you can imagine, watching youtube on smaller screen will generally look better than a TV but the h.264 compression seems considerably higher quality than the flash video on the youtube site. This is not surprising but still very welcomed.
4. Little apps that havent gotten much attn like the stop watch, timer, and world clock seem to have been designed with just as much love and care as the rest of the phone.
5. Finger scrolling is extremely responsive and accurate. A slight flick can take you zooming to the end of a list while also maintaining the fine control needed to move precisely through lines, one at a time.
6. Speaker is terrible, at least on my phone. Im wondering if my speaker is busted. System sounds and ringtones all sound fine. I havent tested speaker phone while on a call yet. But using the speaker instead of headphones to watch a video or play a song and it sounds terrible. Now i suspect the speaker is not intended to listen to music but it is handy to have a decent speaker when showing someone a video. With the volume set to anything past 40% you can forget about it. Worthless.
7. Heavier than I thought it would be. 'Feels' considerably heavier than my Moto Q. But then again the iPhone is glass and metal where as the Q is plastic. iPhone feels very solid and well made in the hand, much like an ipod.
8. As you go through the iphone you find clever UI design tucked in every corner. Just a pleasure to use so far.
9. NO CUT, COPY, or PASTE. Big omission here I think. I do think it may be difficult to implement that due to the fact that all the finger dragging action is already assigned to other functions of the phone (scrolling, etc) but ill sure miss not being able to copy and paste. To Apples credit, they offer hard coded copy/paste for certain things they have anticipated you may want to send to someone else such as a web URL, a youtube video, etc. There are share buttons that will paste those URLs into a new email.
10. SMS on iphone is ALMOST a replacement for having IM. It essentially 'feels' exactly like it is IM they just charge you for every text. Ive already noticed myself sending many more text messages than I normally would.
11. Call quality is nothing spectacular. In line with the other reviews Ive read, its fine, but certainly not great.
12. Ear buds with built in Mic works great. Callers have all said they can hear me great. The little white nubbin also doubles as clicker to start and pause songs (one click), answer or hang up phones calls (one click), or advanced to the next track (two clicks).
13. You dont really close apps. If im safari for example, the only way to get out of it is to use the home button. This concept holds true for every app. You dont close or switch apps, they are perpetually open and iphone handles all of it. Apps do open back to the state they were last in if you've gone to the home screen. For example if pressed 'home' after being in safari, the next time i open it, it will load the last page I was on. And yes, it does seem to load it again as oppose to having it stored in memory. Same holds true for all apps, they open to the last opened state. - M3RCINIAN, on 10/11/2007, -7/+24Uh, opinion? No, they are facts listed in bullet points. The only opinions in the post are at the end. Perhaps you should look up the definition of "opinion" and "fact".
- jhaks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Do you realize you are saying you payed $500-600 on a crippled phone? Your justification for every short coming is that you don't care or that another device can do it better; well in that case WTH is the point of the iPhone? If it is just to make calls and look up maps then maybe you should get a cheaper phone.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -19/+35The iPhone is too expensive, there are excellent phones that cost much less.
- Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17I'm assuming you've never dated.
- stauken, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17I dugg you just for use of the word taint *****. That's awesome.
- EarlOfLade, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19Indeed!
And the iPhone looks like most Apple products, overhyped and overpriced.
Nothing special, just a status symbol for most people except for the Apple fanbois to whom it is a religion. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18I can drop it without fear that it will shatter like an iPhone will the first or second time. I can afford to buy 10 iPhones, but its a waste of money. The joke is on you, poser.
And come on... plastic? What's the iPhone made of, adamantium? Get over yourself fanboy. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -15/+30I have used the Q, and its probably the worst phone I have ever seen. Windows mobile sucks
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -4/+19We heard you the first time, dude.
- strangewill, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16I thought it was the opposite due to all the E3 catastrophes and such, on release day no one really wanted them that much except for the minor elite fanboys. Now that they're releasing good games, and people are hacking them into mini super-computers they're becoming more popular.
- t0ny, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15I dont have a iphone or a treo but I would take the treo any day. Why? Because it has third party software! And with that it opens tons of features that I iphone will never have. Sure the iphone has "web apps". Thats a joke...
Just so you know I'm not an anti-apple fan boy. I own a Macbook pro and I love it. The iphone is cool. But without third party software its just an ipod + a phone. Only retards would pay that much for that. WIth my Palm pilot ( pretty much an treo without the cell phone part ) I can play music, videos, and play games. I can control tvs with novi remote, I can take pictures and videos, edit excel and word files and million of cool and pointless things.
