- blockquote, on 10/12/2007, -8/+30i just had a macgasm. i need my ipod and a marlboro.
- raccettura, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26That is the best porn in ages.
- jhunt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I can just imagine the deafening "BONNNGGG" of all those Mac mini's starting up at once after a power outage or something.
- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16what? Why will they punish people? Believe it or not microsoft actually produces software other than windows. This is a bunch of pictures of them testing MSOFFICe on a bunch of macs. Do you think an exec would sign off to buy all of these things if they wern't supposed to have them?
- djwudi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13A few months ago? Try over two _years_ ago. I should know...I'm the idiot in question. ;)
- hobbit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Actually it would be more accurate to say, "XGL for SuSE has a similar cube-rotation to Mac OS X".
Mac OS X had implemented this user interface effect years before SuSE 10 was delivered. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"See, it's a MAT, with different conclusions on it, that YOU CAN JUMP TO!"
Try reading the article, retard. - ChadMonahan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Wow, thats gotta be sizable percentage of the total mac population. And at Microsoft of all places.
- blhack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8the fact that they were released to the public is okay. In fact its advertising for microsoft. It demonstrates the fact that they are extremely commited to producing a good product for apple.
- sandig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7That was an awesome article. That would be a great place to work!
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7people easily forget that microsoft has had a close relationship with Apple for a long time.
- zigziggityzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is Microsoft we're talking about here, not Apple. Apple's like that secret organization that all the presidents of the U.S. are involved with. Microsoft is like McDonalds.
- Macintosh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7All those computers and yet it still takes them 2 years to push out updates with MSN Messenger.
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4love the minis. the monitor with all the remote desktops very cool.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Microsoft makes a great deal of Apple software (Office, including Entourage, an application that's not even available on Windows [yes, Entourage is analogous to Outlook, but IMO it's a great deal better], Windows Media Player (could have been discontinued, don't remember), Internet Explorer (was discontinued), Virtual PC), thusly, it would be smart for them to own a great deal of Apple hardware to test it on.
I wouldn't be surprised to walk into Apple and see a bunch of Dells either (iTunes/Quicktime). - maverick999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4WOW! That's a lot of Mac Minis:
http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/1955/1163/1600/MacMinisView1.jpg - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"bad xserve! the dell gets you now!"
- seand, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5yeah, the benies are wicked, as is the way everyone is treated..but the work can be quite intensive - especially when its crunch time. There is a reason why we all have our own offices, and many of us have couches in them to sleep on :) Luckily, I don't live very far from campus, so I can leave half asleep and usually make it home :D
You get used to the pace quickly here and after a while it all seems normal. But the acclimation period is quite daunting for many and that is why there are mentor programs setup to help new employees whenever needed.
The interview process however, can be the worst part of it all depending who conducts your interviews :) - iWorks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5i'd love to see a comparison showing Apple's lab... but that'll never happen. Damn Apple secrecy!
- alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5No kidding! For some reason, seeing all those Minis in a row is even more impressive than all the G5 towers.
- Escamillo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The official blog of Microsoft's Linux lab (actually, Open Source lab (which includes Linux)) is here:
http://port25.technet.com/default.aspx - puffinfresh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If they have this many Macs, imagine how many PCs Microsoft have for testing!!!!
They have all different types of Macs so they can test on everything. There aren't all that many different kinds of Macs, when you compare them to the different combinations of hardware that PCs can have. - dwemer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I can't believe all of the people who are saying "microsoft will have that shut down". They don't even realize how friendly microsoft has been to apple, microsoft actively develops mac software. Microsoft and apple don't really even compete, apple makes huge profits by selling computers and ipods and microsoft makes huge profits by selling xboxes and OS licenses.
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/ - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6How long a time was that? About a year, until which point Microsoft released Windows, a clone of Apple's "Macintosh". After which Microsoft and Apple fought vigorously in court until a settlement was generally pounded out sometime in the 90s.
Sure, Microsoft develops software for Apple. It'd be stupid for them not to; by not developing software for the Mac, Microsoft is leaving part of the market segment empty, which would allow Apple to fill in the market segment with a product, and be a direct competitor (which some argue is still happening with iLife/iWork).
The flipside of this is that the opposite is true; Apple develops software for Windows, and it's for the same reason. Apple has been known for years to have the best video manipulations software and toolchains, so not developing codecs and players for Windows would be leaving themselves out of that market segment, and would allow Microsoft to strike back (which some would argue they have with Microsoft Windows Media Player and various WMP codecs and technologies).
Computers are not an industry in which any company can decide to work in a vacuum. If a company ignores another company, that other company can turn around in a month and be a competitor. As the age old saying goes, "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer". - velo2k77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wow, very impressive, it'd be neat to put the new intel core duo minis and cluster them using xgrid. That'd be a load of processing power in one area. Nice digg.
- kenz0r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ dino
yeah, because a small business like ®Microsoft© cant afford it right? - macboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3OH! so that's where the 4% market share comes from. :p
- tracydanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2150 minis? I'm sure they could get the same job done with 149 whilst giving me one of them for free.
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"But they didn't buy all those Minis. It's a _colo_ facility."
Even though you personally may buy a machine to put in the Colo, you're buying it /through/ their company, so that company is most definitely the largest purchaser of Mac Minis. - kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@djwudi
Pretty cool that you responded to that comment. I looked at your profile and you do seem to be the real Michael Hanscom. How did you respond to this comment so fast? - koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, really awesome. They've bought so many macs. And we thought Apple and Microsoft were enemies. They're buddies! buying each other out. That's how they're so rich, they keep buying each others stuff!
- sidhighwind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very Nice.
- JamesGHill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Beautiful lab. Not too much, not too few, and a decent use of automation.
My only question: Isn't there a better way to re-image a bunch of Macs other than using different volumes/partitions?
James Hill - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Not necessarily. I could send them the mini I'm typing on right now and they'd colo it.
https://support.macminicolo.net/jvmx_secure_signup - kenz0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2they might be trying to tell you that it sucks and stop using it and use something else
- kevincupp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Nice cube-rotation of the machines, similar to XGL for SuSE.
- culebra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That just gives me a hard on. Wow what a nerd!
- Kris - Dinosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder if MS gets or requests a discount from Apple... hmmm.
- WyllyWylly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why are so many people surprised about this? It's smart business to have this kind of stuff around, particularly when you're the largest software company in the world. Read Paul Thurrott's write-ups on how they develop Windows and you'll see that Microsoft doesn't screw around when it comes to testing.
I gave it a digg because it's a rare look at something with massive geek appeal. - chopstickhero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like it. Enough toys to satisfy every Mac geek alive.
- MadOgre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35 Minute Get all you Grab spree!
Can we like, have a disaster of some mild sort around that area so we could loot that joint?
Please? - renegade334, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't forget, you can't bag apple around these parts, your comment/story will get buried instantly. Let that be a lesson to you
- d4rkn1ght, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft could have made money with the old Macs that were recycled by selling them on Ebay.
There are collectors that will pay big money for those old systems. - FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would kill for that collection of books. :)
- Dinosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Images of the final shot of Indiana Jones 1 come right to mind!
- skell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is one of the coolest submissions I've seen in quite some time!
- domingo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2those photos are creepy. i have feeling that it is like my friends are captured in an alien base and experiments are being done on them!
- EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So when do we get to see Microsofts Linux lab?
:-P - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Makes me want to become a person who does this, im so envious, I don't even care for macs I just like all the computers.
- IcanFLY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It wouldn't satisfy Steve Jobs.. he won't be happy until he is crowned as king of the world or something.
