Holy drama queen. - thrillki1l, on 09/08/2008, -3/+66This is a ***** up idea. Some people just like the simple version. My friends and I just want to have music. We don't give a damn about video. The screen can be black and white because that's all you need to see song names and maybe it would knock a few bucks off if they didn't have the color screen or the extra fee's to license the video codecs.
- SmEdD, on 09/09/2008, -3/+44Burried as I like my clickwheel, it's the feature that pulled me into the ipod instead of another brand.
- Motherfuhrer, on 09/08/2008, -1/+28Solution: give more space to iPod touch...
- richofsilence, on 09/09/2008, -0/+26WOW. Talk about writing an article just to read your own words.
Definitely a waste of time and overly dramatic. - Gatchaman, on 09/09/2008, -3/+24Wrong!! The click wheel is fine and the best way to navigate the iPod. Especially on the go.
- MrKas, on 09/09/2008, -0/+20also known as the iTouch-kids
- cliffzdude, on 09/09/2008, -1/+19Spot on. I bought my wife a nano a few months ago, her first iPod. She's not that techy, she gets by fine but wants it simple first. I gave her the 2 minute walk through, done. She's used it without any questions since.
Overweight? Not really. Now that Apple's created the De facto standard for digital music players, any schmoe can now state its become stale. Which is what we saw today. Some Giz writers sitting around trying to eek out more page views based upon the upcoming new iPods. The interface just works. Its quick, easy, and intuitive. And this is coming from a non Apple fan-boy.
Giz editor: We need another iPod story. Ideas?
Giz writer: Ya, howz about we become Critical of the iPod, even though its great as is.
Giz editor: Great idea kid -- run with it!
meh - Skod, on 09/09/2008, -0/+14Touch is not better, I change tracks on my ipod while I'm driving around by feeling the wheel. A touchscreen takes my eyes off of the road, and let me be honest, I don't EVER want my music to have more controls than play, pause, stop, fast forward/track skip, and rewind/previous track. Having dedicated, physical buttons for these features keeps me driving and enjoying my music at the same time.
- BossKey, on 09/09/2008, -0/+14The touchscreen iPods are also impossible in a pocket. That's why for the last few years my iPod has been a shuffle. Complete tactile operation.
If Apple announces a cheaper Touch, I might buy it for the space and the features, but for my exercise walks and other times when I don't need hours of music but I do want to adjust it without looking, I'm keeping the shuffle. - TheWorm, on 09/09/2008, -6/+16Hope you don't lose your 3000 dollar iPod.
- dobba, on 09/09/2008, -0/+10No no no no no . . . what idiot's writing this article, other than to get on the front page of Digg?
The iPods wheel is a piece of tactile, user based engineering genius (no - I'm not a fanboi). Compared to the Touch and iPhone it's leaps ahead. The only thing you could do is make it an on-screen virtual wheel for the touchscreen. As Phrenzy says above, there's no substitute for the wheel. It's there because it works and works well. - jayb1rd, on 09/09/2008, -2/+12Booooo. An iPod Nano Touch? Too tiny!
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -1/+10Not to mention that the premise MAKES NO ***** SENSE.
Bloated software and UI will be INCREASED, not decreased, by the demise of the clickwheel and total reliance on touch-screen.
Nice "writing", Gizmodo. - phrenzy, on 09/09/2008, -0/+9I have an iPhone and an iPod video. There is no substitute for the tactile response of the wheel. I can see how, sitting on a train or waiting at a doctors office the touch interface is more fun and efficient, but in just about every other circumstance (jogging, working out, driving, cycling, walking, etc) the classic iPod wheel interface is way easier to deal with.
- isayre020888, on 09/09/2008, -0/+8...But I like my click wheel...
- inactive, on 09/08/2008, -4/+12The thing is, this article isn't realistic about design. They are fine with having more features, more options, more things to do... but Gizmodo makes it sound like they also want a single button to do it with, or the device is bloated. That's not realistic, and I don't even think it's true that people are bothered by it. This article is trying to create a scenario of "here's a problem, and we know the solution" when, in fact, their solution is that the iPod is supposed to be psychic.
- Spudster, on 09/09/2008, -1/+9Try using an iTouch while driving a vehicle when you can`t see the screen you`re navigating. It`s not ideal for music to say the least because you can`t immediately click skip without looking.
- chuzwuzza, on 09/09/2008, -0/+8@Spudster
Agreed. I use my ipod exclusively in the car. For the last few years I had an ipod mini, which has finally given out. Last month I bought an iphone thinking I would replace it, but it's downright dangerous to operate in the car. So I'm thinking of just grabbing a classic. - kingfoot, on 09/09/2008, -0/+832gb of flash memory, in your hand, not enough?
- kingfoot, on 09/09/2008, -0/+7yeah blind controls ftl. no matter how awesome my touch is, i still cant just reach in my pocket to change the song. ive gotta take the whole damn thing out.
- drummer815, on 09/09/2008, -0/+7They need to keep one device that holds many gigs of music, and a Touch won't do that for a while. Since 2002, I've had various iPod models, now known as iPod classics. I started with 15 GB on my first iPod then eventually got up to 80GB. That one got stolen about a year ago, and I've made it without one for a while, but then I got an iPhone in July. After being back on the iPod wagon, I'm going to get whatever new iPod classic gets announced tomorrow, 160GB, 240GB, whatever. Its nice to be able to play a handful of songs but when you have an extensive music library like I do, you want it all in one place. And if the click wheel dies, so does at least my sale, and likely many others.
- benjaminrayburn, on 09/09/2008, -0/+7Not only should the click wheel not die, I wish to god they would add some virtual form of it to the iphone. It's a monstrous pain in the ass to try and scrub forward/backward in a podcast with any precision on iphone. You are lucky if you miss your desired spot by less than 5 minutes! I know you can hold down the ff button, but that doesn't work very well either. Click wheel forever!
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -1/+7The clickwheel on the ipods and the slidey pad thing on the zen are perfectly fine.
Dramatic nonsense on show here.
On the Zen for navigating through music on a massive library, use the Letter chooser, takes a second.
fro menus; what is the problem at all.
This is a stupid article to fill up space before the new ipod is shown.
Real possible Improvements In creative Zens and Ipods:
WiFi
DVB tuners (dependent on region, the EU is so behind on this its pointless here)
Faster access times
Continual battery improvement
Storage
USB 3.0 (i believe its a bit like 802.11 N at the mo, not out but spec is known) - mushoo, on 09/09/2008, -3/+9No, ***** you. I still use my 2g touch-wheel.
- Scott2, on 09/08/2008, -3/+8I'd plop down cash for a 200GB+ iPod touch in a heartbeat.
After having used the iPod for years, then an iPhone for a year, I have to agree with this article - the touch interface is absolutely superior. The clickwheel simply no longer cuts it for larger libraries like mine. - skealoha86, on 09/09/2008, -0/+5My thoughts exactly... the iPod Touch is a bitch to use in the car.
- benzzene, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Comparing the two menu diagrams (and those are cool menu diagrams by the way) it looks like it would be the same number of clicks to play a song: Music>Artists (for example)>whatever comes next...
The fancy stuff requires more clicks but those are things that people set maybe once and never return to. Presumably people aren't changing the Photo transitions from "Wipe Across" to "Wipe Center" every few minutes. - bitmanip, on 09/09/2008, -1/+5Then they'd have to pay Microsoft royalties.. Didn't Microsoft just patent the obvious PgUp and PgDn?..
- Bologner, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Go use my old Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen Extra, then use an iPod classic.
The difference is pretty big (not audio wise, but I think you get the idea). - nreynolds, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4If you care about things other than music, than yes, the iPod touch is great. But for purely a music player, nothing apple makes beats the ipod classic. Sure, it's easy to switch between letters on the touch, but even with that feature, I've yet to meet anyone that can navigate a touch as quickly as a classic, and when you're making a playlist to listen to during madden, every second counts.
- KMartSheriff, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4@jayb1rd
That's funny, neither did yours. - Jareth86, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4I disagree. I like being able to switch songs without taking the ipod out of my pocket and looking at the screen. I like being able to change songs in the dead of winter without taking my gloves off.
Believe it or not, the click wheel has its conveniences, and many prefer it. - MonoDede, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Somebody call the wahhhmbulance.
Please, it's really not that bad. This doesn't mean I'm a fan of iPods mind you. I prefer others because of their support for FLAC. - arjie, on 09/09/2008, -0/+4Microsoft patented this "When the page is not completely displayed on the screen, Page Down takes you one screen down, instead of a real page down in the document."
Silly? Yes. - Dino451, on 09/09/2008, -1/+5My 5 year old nephew can work an ipod. Looks like this person can't
- 0gre, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3No... the nano is perfect shoulder mounted music player. The Touch is a great portable everything but for cycling, walking, etc the Touch is awful, I got the touch and though I love the device the only way I can use it the way I want is with an after market remote control which lets me switch songs without... "Click button, LOOK AT DISPLAY and slide unlock, LOOK AT DISPLAY to slide the volume, Click button".
Just No. - superkendall, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Actually the iPhone is pretty easy to use in a car, since double-clicking the headphone pinch button advances to the next track, and single clicking pauses the music (which is all you really care about in a car). Navigation of songs is just as easy with a touchscreen since you have to look at the screen anyway (bad idea in a moving car BTW).
Obviously you don't wear headphones in a car, but some iPhone line-out plugs add the same button on so you can use it in a car with the iPhone attached to the radio.
And of course, there are a variety of car integrations that are even fancier that make use of the dock... - jamaph, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3So much music! It's great to have a music collection that size. I have everything I want to hear.
But honestly, why sync those tracks you don't care for on certain albums? Even on extended trips (Car/Plane/Ship) it's impossible to listen to 9,000 tracks, or 120GB of music. I could build a solid playlist, or selection of music, on 16GB. That could last me for the longest durations of my trips, or whatever you want to call them, and when I arrive home I can get new music.
Plus, with an iPhone you can find songs your missing on the iPod via Pandora's or SeeqPod, most of the time. Which if you find yourself having difficulty finding songs, its a good idea to sync music of a less popular artist, over more popular mainstream titles.
All in all, I doubt the click wheel or the large iPods are on the endangered list. - GutterMoo, on 09/09/2008, -0/+3Kingfoot, some people have wide range of tastes and large collections. I have an iPod classic because I needed at least 80 gb of storage because my collection of music is over 60gb. I wanted a Zune until I remembered that Zune + Linux = fail.
- BloggerJohn, on 09/09/2008, -1/+4Useless crap from Gizmodo as usual.

(assuming it's not jailbroken)...btw, you have to look at the itouch before you can change anything; a real button can be really useful....hopefully that'll be fixed in the 2g touch.
- johnw188, on 09/09/2008, -1/+3This guy's article is crap. It takes three clicks to get from menu to music on the old ipod, just like it does in the new one. From the very first ipod to the current generation, two items were added to the "Music" menu - Coverflow and Compilations.
A menu for videos was added as the original ipod couldn't play videos; ditto to the photos. All in all, the UI has barely changed; anyone familiar only with the first gen ipod would still feel right at home on a new nano.
In summary, author should cry more. - yogiincork, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2PigUp and PigDn?
- tossayo, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2OMG do NOT call it an iTouch! Nobody calls it an iNano, or an iClassic or an i5.5G o_o
- maiden8680, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2i am honestly going to miss the clickwheel and the simplicity the ipod once was.
i use my ipod for music, and to hold a grand total of 4 photos. I have a iPod touch as well that I got as a gift, and after about a week using it, i went back to my clickwheel. It's going to be a really sad day when mine does...because when it does, if i want one with a not so ridiculous amount of space ( 120gb im looking at you), i have to go to the touch...or go down to a nano and not hold as much music.
Or I move on to a new player...but we'll see ;) - YoctoYotta, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2@Spudster
I agree with you about the benefits of the clickwheel in driving situations, but there's a few solutions that could get car-users of the Touch devices at least part-way towards the same functionality, such as a wireless remote (bluetooth?) that clips to the steering wheel which could control volume, track skip, and play/pause . . . and maybe even contains a microphone for voice-control of band/album/song selection.
I guess what's important is that Apple will have every reason to continue to sell iPods with clickwheels so long as people are buying them. I will take a thicker harddrive based 160+GB Touch though in a heartbeat. - dgtljunglist, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2Well... he's got a point about the menus, but the clickwheel is brilliant specifically _because_ it navigates menus so well.
Sorry to say it Captain, but you've got the wrong man... - swhite76, on 09/09/2008, -0/+2How am I supposed to change my songs on the go without a clickwheel? Whether it's in my pocket, on my arm jogging, or next to me in the car, most of the time I'm using my iPod I'm not looking at it.I don't need a touch screen to skip a song.
