- autoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+71OSx86 was my first approach to Macs too. In the first months it was all excitement and I was lucky enough to have an almost compatible laptop to give it a go. It was fun, we all learned some OS X innards, we crunched those kexts to get it all going... but eventually it got painful to mantain. Every new update to Tiger broke some more thing and it wasn't worth the hassle after almost a year of playing cat and mouse.
On the good side, we learned the most wonderful system ever, we discovered what a great repertory of applications there are outside of the Windows world, we met on IRC and had fun sharing info. Most of all, we couldn't go back to Windows anymore. If it wasn't because of OSx86. I wouldn't be typing this on my Macbook Pro.
Thanx Mash. - brewno2k, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37I like to think this project is some sort of free sample: you can install OSX on your computer, see how good and awesome it is, and if you want it all, buy a Mac. If not, you'll have to go through all the hell about installing updates and drivers to make it work _sort of_ like a Mac. It actually helps on the decision of making people switch, so it's a good thing for Apple.
I, for one, will be switching to a Mac soon, just waiting for Leopard and the new Macbooks.
All thanks to this project. - bradallen18, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29I first downloaded an image of OSX and ran it in VMWare. After about 1 day, I started saving for a Mac.
From experience I know it's switched a fair number of people over to Apple recently. - FarcicalFart, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I think this helped Apple more than it hurt them, it sure convinced me to buy their hardware as well as many others.
Oh the memories! - cookiebearo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21i'm posting from mikeazorin's mac also
uh oh... i think he just woke up - Retrograde, on 10/12/2007, -7/+25Fanboy (fan' boie): Someone that's such an blindly ardent supporter of an operating system that they don't notice their handle is "osxleopard."
- RomulusX86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Thanks Maxxuss, for all the hard work you put in to hacking the kernels. OSx86 is the reason I've got a mac today :)
- m00nstone, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19I like PCs and I like macs. I love computers. This "Us vs. Them" type of behavior makes us geeks look generally pathetic.
- adam84a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16how odd, I too had the same experience, I experimented a little with OS X on my PC, then when it was time for me to get a new laptop I got the MBP too.
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20I'm posting from my Mac.
- Vipersfate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13It's about OSx86project.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Betting against InsanelyMac's servers? Why would you do that?
- AtomB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Spoken like a guy who has never spent more then five minutes on a mac.
- fuzZzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9You don't read very well do you?
Maybe you should read up on a subject before you bash it.
(I did get a good chuckle out of your "soap bar" comment though) - Alfdog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Don't worry, I'll distract them by posting from my Dell M1210... which is also running OSx86.
- TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10For me, my turn to Macs started with an iPod, then a disgust for windows, a week stay at my Uncle's who uses nothing but Macs. The last puzzle piece was that Osx86 leak.
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The REAL history of OS X on Intel starts in 1993 when NeXT ported NeXTSTEP to x86. It has been on x86 ever since. Even though for a decade (1996-2006) it languished in the Apple labs, unseen by the public, it was there, with every feature matched per PPC release. If you consider that, it has basically been on x86 for about 14 years in one form or another.
- lordbelial, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8To sendmesomejunk:
Are you blind? Do you actually read the comments in every Linux/Mac post? Every.....single.....post is a ridiculous flame war. OPEN YOUR EYES MAN! - gavintlgold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6But the zune doesn't have free games, or an alarm that plays music for you in the morning, or a calendar. I think it's true, at least it seemed like it when I fooled around with it at Sears... It doesn't have a clickwheel, either....
- GregR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Waiting for Flag564 to post his usual "Windows is superior because I say so" rant.
- NoOneButMe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5look at the person who submitted the article and who posted that link? i'd imagine you'd realize why ^_^
- jbswashington, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Personally, I wish everyone that hates Windows would just switch to another operating system and stop complaining. If you don't like it, switch, don't sit around trashing other people's choices. There is a ton of stuff that Mac just does not have that I like, thus I use Windows.
But I'm not going to go around telling everyone they should stop buying Macs because I like Windows, right? That would be arrogant. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I hope you will take the time to visit mtbterain's new website, maccliches.com. For all your idiotic mac bashing needs! Give him some time to update it though, his mom only lets him use his AOL account for about 15 minutes a day.
- AtomB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Posting from a Dell e1505 with osx86 and I LOVE IT!
- patricklynch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'd never tried OS X when the deadmoo image came out, so I set it up dual-boot on my notebook to see what the fuss is about. I remember how surprised everyone in my high school was when they saw me working in the library with OSx86 on a Dell D600. I had questions about it for a month, and eventually converted a group of Dell users to the new OS. Almost all of us have real macs now, which are wonderful, so I'm glad I got the chance to do that.
- SimplyBuzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4After success installing OSx86 on my PC, I start to think maybe one day I will buy a Core Duo Mac and have XP running under Mac VMware
- cheebs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4osx86 also shed the light for me, to the glory that is the whole mac experience. You really don't know until you use it for your everyday computing, then its like things suddenly clear up. For me, It came to a point where i was through my phase of rebuilding my tower and reloading windows every 60 days or so.
Haven't looked back since! - Vipersfate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I started with the first release, and couldn't stop. It is a godsend!
- chogie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5dont forget all of the emulators that were able to run up to Mac OS 9.2.2
- bluering, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think one of the biggest catalyst for hard core geek PC switchers in the last year can be directed at "Jas". This guy should be getting kick backs from Apple. One good install on a sony laptop and I was hooked. 3 Macbook pros later, and here I am.
- Erowid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I....... Don't care what any of you are posting from? :/
- chogie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
has a full list of tested hardware that will or wont work for each version - Kypt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dove in w/o even ever using the OS. Needed a laptop, had a windows and ubuntu machine so decided to fully dive in to OSX so bought the laptop. Never been more glad that i took the plunge. Granted, thinking back it could've been a REALLY stupid mistake since I had never really used it before...but then again it forced me to open my eyes and mind to actually learn it. Hell I had already paid for it, might as well see how it worked :P
- bobbagoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The last Mac Mouse I used had a right click
- rickbauls, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3IBM Thinkpad T30
Compaq Evo N610C
Dell C640, D600
They all work. None have fully functional pcmcia or mini-pci slots though. - AtomB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use it as my main machine, it has come a long way since then. I have 10.4.9 with the 8.9.1 kernel and I don't have any issues with it.
- AtomB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No because that would be NeXT running on intel
- xxdesmus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Great read. I am glad to say I was part (and by part I mean user not cracker/coder) of this since day once. It's been a very interesting saga, I'll look forward to reading part II and III.
- desistere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey Sabr, Conroe Mac... I wonder how many insanelymac.com people are lurking in this thread with different names. I can't be the only one.
For everyone else: Nothing can replace a real Mac, but if you were ever hesitant to switch, this is a great way to try it out.
My own reminiscing about OSX86: The OSX86 project has come a long way. When I told people what kind of box I wanted to install on, they said I was an idiot. Two threads and forty pages later, everything works perfectly. This project is about people that love understanding how computers work. In that way, setting up your first OSX86 box is like installing Linux for the first time. Not everything works right away, but you learn about computers in a new rewarding way. People in the insanelymac forum have a different kind of reverence for OS X, because they tinker with it from the insides. That is why there are so many converters. When you understand the complexities of the workings of the OS, the simplicity of it when it works as it should is a very beautiful thing. I think people would say the same of Linux. - STKD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Indeed.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3When I was running 10.4.3 (I think), all PPC apps would crash instantly and most intel apps (ones that needed SSE3) would kernel panic.
I think I was able to find Finder and a few things in the Utilities folder. It was a blast. - flux1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Part 2 is when they sell the site and make off with the cash.
(Check the story about the site being sold for what I'm refering to.) - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'd imagine you're crazy!
- megafan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Goto: http://www.digg.com/apple/Mac_OSX86_Installation_Guide For the osx86 installation guide including the links. And all the links are from university of Wisconsin, so they are all legitimate. The guide also explains how to install darwin on vmware.
- quickslvr1287, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2OSx86 is also how I got my start in OS X. I had a HP zv6000 and it was a real fun challenge getting it working right. I liked OS X a lot but I could never get the sound working right. So I started saving and I'm posting this from my new macbook. I used the OSx86 forum a lot back then, its the place to go if you want OS X on your PC
- specialK16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can use Parallels, as I said before.
- sendmesomejunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Show me a ***** example.
- SABR, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nice one Mash! Loved it! :)
- macminiintel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1nice read swad :)
