- NSResponder, on 10/12/2007, -12/+105BTW, Greenpeace knew damn well that Apple leads the computer industry in this area. Those ***** were just looking to ride Apple's coat tails for publicity.
-jcr - tacojohn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+64I'm glad to see Job's take this issue head on. Nice to see that their LCD panels are going LED backlit too...updates soon?
- renman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+53Greenpeace can suck it! And yes, GP targets Apple for the publicity not the facts - that type of PR discredits GP. Which is why they can SUCK IT!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+35I think Steve's comments were fair. GP gave HP and Dell props for thing that Apple have been doing for years.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33He said both what Apple was doing, proposing to do, and what his competitors are doing and proposing to do. Seems pretty complete to me.
- macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Also from their site:
"Right now, poison Apples full of chemicals (like toxic flame retardants, and polyvinyl chloride) are being sold worldwide. When they're tossed, they usually end up at the fingertips of children in China, India and other developing-world countries. They dismantle them for parts, and are exposed to a dangerous toxic cocktail that threatens their health and the environment."
Jobs Article:
"A note of comparison — In 2007 HP stated that they will remove PVC from all their packaging. Apple did this 12 years ago. Last year, Dell began the process of phasing out large quantities of brominated flame retardants in large plastic enclosure parts. Apple’s plastic enclosure parts have been bromine-free since 2002."
"All the e-waste we collect in North America is processed in the U.S., and nothing is shipped overseas for disposal." - themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -10/+28I thought Apple always was green.
- ben000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18You know, that originally crossed my mind as well. But I think in this case it is permissable. Greenpeace is a bunch of douche-bags who obviously didn't even do their homework before coming after Apple. Sometimes, it is important to set the record straight in the context it was originally presented (a ranking of the Greenest/Greenless tech companies).
I just always figured Apple was green, and was surprised to see them rete so poorly on that list. It's important to know how long Apple has actually been doing their part, especially in comparison to the Dells and HPs out there. - dn11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18ok, i will hand it to apple this time - this sounds like good news. LED backlights will make for better image quality and better color accuracy as well
- mccarron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I think that is a fantastic idea, and I'd hope with Al Gore on the Board of Directors they would consider this when building the new campus in Cupertino.
- Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17I would guess that this was 'ghost written' for him. He may have done a brief memo on it, but most of it was likely worded by a PR person.
- planetfinder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Agreed. Green peace clearly feels that its OK to lie or at lease manipulate and distort information in the interest of their cause. As a result their following is increasingly limited to the idiotologically pure of heart. Its too bad because that's one less worthwhile organization protecting the environment. They'll never get my support acting this way.
- toughice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I recycle, own Apple computers, and I'm from a mining town in Pennsylvania. What a strange comment to make.
- renman, on 10/12/2007, -13/+24Agreed
- reservoir, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18CONFIRMED: LED Macbook Pro's at WWDC. Let's go ahead and get that story submitted ASAP!! /sarcasm
- tripm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The title of this article should have read "In Your Face Greenpeace, Love Steve"
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Not to mention better battery life in notebooks.
- SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12It's getting old already.
- khaled, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Second "open letter" by Steve Jobs this year.
Guess we will see more from Apple in 2007. - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"Apple is on track to introduce our first displays using arsenic-free glass in 2007."
yay, new monitors.
"We plan to introduce our first Macs with LED backlight technology in 2007."
New iMac's too...?!?!? - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6His comment about LED LCDs in future 2007 Macs is interesting, in that Apple rarely gives hints about upcoming unannounced features.
and.."As an incentive, we even offer customers a 10% discount on a new iPod when they bring their old iPod to our stores for proper disposal."
I hope this includes the iPhone! - reservoir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5OK....well I was only joking...but nevertheless:
http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/05/02/steve_jobs_confirms_first_macs_with_led_backlighting_due_this_year.html
Already on the front page. I love it!! Good news either way. - Balanced, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Congratulations, xatx. You're a spammer!
- gropo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Absolutely. Greenpeace has been capitalizing on the fact that Mac users are more 'green' on average and issuing highly slanted charges. Extremists of every flavor under the Sun have one thing in common:
"LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LISTEN TO MY CAUSE"
Wether it be Islamic terrorists, Christian anti-gay bigots, animal rights activists or environmentalists. - CountryBoyRI, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Oh shut the hell up.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Here: http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=red%20apples&btnG=Google+Search&sa=N&tab=wi
- funknjunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And here i was expecting a granny smith
- ChrisJP, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12shrimpdesign, after you had typed "Who's a better source for Apple than Apple?" did it not occur to you that what Neil said just may well have been a joke? I certainly lol'd.
- UnderWurlde, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4How smashed up must your iPod be for you to bring it back for a 10% discount on a new one, compared to selling it on eBay or classifieds and making money off a used item? But I agree, it's a very nice bonus from them to the consumer.
- macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Here is Greenpeace's Apple-bashing campaign:
http://members.greenpeace.org/sites/greenmyapple/index.php
"That's why we Apple fans need to demand a new, cool product: a greener apple."
Oh the irony!
I think I shall write a letter to Greenpeace regarding Jobs' article... - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"So is Jobs a columnist now? He's been writing a bit lately."
Two columns in as much time as I can remember - how does he ever find the time?
/sarcasm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The previous comment is what happens when I type while talking to somebody. Geez.
- theironwok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"All of Apple’s U.S. retail stores, which now number more than 150, take back unwanted iPods for environmentally friendly disposal free of charge. As an incentive, we even offer customers a 10% discount on a new iPod when they bring their old iPod to our stores for proper disposal."
That's pretty cool, I never knew that. They should advertise this more. - ZogDog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Oh good grief xatx, grow up and get over it. You people and that damn 'revolt 2007' piss me off. Idiots, go buy something.
- sundeepr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah,
Nice to hear some information on how Apple actually ranks. I at first thought they were no better or worse than any others in the industry. But it seems like they do seem to be making more effort. As far as Greenpeace, I think they lost touch with sanity and humanity a long time ago. We do need to be more Green, but these guys wouldn't be happy unless we went back to caveman days and got rid of at least 90% of the world population. Though, most of them couldn't survive in the African or Australian bush for more than an day. It's easy to talk when living in a comfort zone. Face reality at the poverty line and I'd like to see how long they would continue in the same vein. - murphe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Whats ridiculous is the way Greenpeace is claiming in a big hoohaa they have affected Apple's policies here:
http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/tasty-apple-news-020507
Whereas reading Jobs' note explains that the policies were already in place. In reality Greenpeace were ignoramus' who did no actual investigation of the issue, made a big fuss out of nothing and then claimed to have changed everything for the better.
I'm a huge supporter of the environmental movement but in my eyes Greenpeace is the same as it always has been - a self-aggrandizing political movement that achieves nothing of actual worth and then claims it has made a difference. - porkstacker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Having contracted at Apple for a couple months this year, I can for sure acknowledge they have an excellent recycling program in their office buildings. Only occasionally will you see an aluminum can in a trashcan, but that is only because someone from a coal mining town in Pennsylvania was visiting. As for RoHS compliance, however, they most assuredly are going in the right direction.
-he who stacks pork - dn11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"any proof that global warming is not real"
Rush said so! You know he is a world renowned expert in climate science. From what I've heard 95% of the worlds respected scientists are conspiring with Nancy Pelosi on this - you can't trust these people - they are all communists that hate the American way. They have also gotten the ice caps to agree to their plan - as they are "appearing" to be rapidly disappearing just as the pinko commie scientists say they are.
Who gives a ***** about the planet anyway - I'm making plenty of money as things are - millions of people in the developing world may die due to famine? No sweat off my back - I've got central AC you dirt bags! hahaha! Why don't you go marry a spotted owl you hippie freaks. I've got enough money to go live in a domed city when the ***** hits the fan. We'll just grow steaks in test tubes if we have to - you'll take my Hummers and McDonalds from my cold dead hands you Al Gore Fanbois.
/painfully obvious sarcasm - demonstro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4xatx - that is so over dude
- cwoolf34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Apple knows more about "clean" design than anybody, right? So why do Macs, iPods, iBooks and the rest of their product line contain hazardous substances that other companies have abandoned?" - GP Apple page
Since when have iBooks not been considered Macs? What are these other companies you speak of? - overtoke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ rpfsc
CO2 will only increase plant growth if there is also enough oxygen, available nutrients, water and if the temperature is not too high
and you left out the part where carbon in the atmosphere is scientifically proven to trap solar radiation - Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I noticed this a while ago when apple started to take computers back for free so that they could dispose of them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The white plastic on an iPod is still PVC. That's just one fact Steve Jobs's PR writer glossed over. You fanboys have been explosed to the Reality Distortion Field™ for way too long.
- adc86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Man, I hate Greenpeace...
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I guess we all knew it was going to happen sooner or later. I want to know if it is sooner OR later in 2k7.
- batmant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Title of this story should be "Apple Confirms LED MacBooks in 2007"
- LeonardNimrod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Greenpeace is like any other business run by people without scruples or ethics. They care nothing about the environment, just the bottom line. The fact is that Apple was founded by two hippies. You can't get greener than that. Apple's track record proves this.
- 3mpire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I misread the parent post as communist, not columnist and thought it was a witty joke--communists have been known to put out a screed or two (a year)
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Woz wasn't a hippie, he was a geek.
And The Steve, well, he was a "free spirit" with a type A personality. - tektalk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Glad this is unlike all the other PR ***** coming from other companies where the CEOs send for someone else to announce the company's green movement.
