- Universal, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13"...the ability to record data on high-capacity Blu-ray discs, LightScribe labeling to make your discs prettier..."
At least on external Blue-ray and/or LightScribe CD-RW/DVD-RW burners :-(
Apple, we're still waiting... - mikepictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8a very good burning program actually, but I agree it looks pretty much like an ad, and I will bury it on that basis.
- Altotus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are a little too niche for Apple right now. If there was to be a clear winner, and if the backers could stabilize the formats (they announce variations of each every month or two), then maybe there would be something. But right now, they're one of those technologies that few people are buying, and the vendors themselves are not fully committed to (namely, they are already sending out to manufacturers new higher-capacity formats).
HD-DVD and Blu-Ray increasingly look like an interim technology that is not going anywhere fast. - bitmugger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10This submission smacks of an ad that made it to the front page by shady means. I can't see what in the title or article would have caused this to make it to the front page. Roxio's new product has no earth shattering features.
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7dugg by kevin, thats why
- eliasg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah, but remember when the first CD burners came out, how expensive they were? Look at how cheap they are now. Same with DVD burners. They used to be real expensive. Now they're $30.
- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Blu-ray discs are $15 each at newegg.com for 25GB.
A 250GB HDD is $70. More than 50% less than the same number of Blu-ray disc media.
And no need for a new writer hardware, software, and lots of time. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Toast is surprisingly user-friendly. I have never been a fan of Roxio programs for Windows, but I don't mind Toast.
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Call me crazy, but I like Burn.
http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/ - Fordi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Awww, and here I was thinking there'd be gasoline involved.
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Roxio makes such crappy Windows software yet their Mac software is top notch.
- MisterSam, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Bury this diggers, its just an advertisement for Toast, an average burning program.
- jarinudom, on 03/31/2008, -1/+4Call me crazy, but I actually like Disco
- nathos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, there's Toast egg sausage and Toast, that's not got much Toast in it.
- SgtBeavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3IMO the best reason to get Toast 8 is for the Tivo2Go for Mac. I know there are other ways to get Tivo videos on your Mac, but Toast 8 makes it a lot easier.
Another thing I like is that Toast 8 makes it easier to burn TV programs from EyeTV directly to DVD. - MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3With the nature of LightScribe discs of course it can't offer color support, but I hadn't heard it lasts less than a year. Are you talking about the data on the disc or the image burned and can you please provide a link showing this?
Apple has yet to offer a Blu-ray disc burner or a HD-DVD burner. Maybe they're hedging their bets to see which will be the dominant format. - mason.parker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Where did he get "about two dozen new or improved features"? It's not in the article. Only reason I ask is that Kevin seems to have a pet peeve (on Diggnation) about tweaks, bug fixes and such making it into a list of "new features".
- MisterSam, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Plus, no one needs to buy Toast, use thepiratebay.
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Lightscribe...requires extra hardware, lasts less than a year and has little support for color.
Blu-ray, on the other hand...wahoo! Except, blu-ray burners are really expensive. - MAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use Maarten Foukhar's Burn. Its free. Its simple. and its free.
http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Pirate Bay, here I come!
- ronaldpoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't like Toast...
- ohmar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When the article said, 'A Better Way to Burn With Macintosh,' I was actually hoping for an alternative to Toast.
- MikeFromAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Toast Titanium 8 comes with TiVoToGo for the Mac?
http://www.roxio.com/enu/support/toast/v8/tivo_togo.html
http://www.tivo.com/4.9.4.1-2_mac.asp
Didn't realize that. That's huge. Not that I haven't been ripping stuff from my TiVo already but it's nice there's finally an official Mac solution for this. - ReiToei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uhhh, hasn't Toast 8 Titanium been out for ages? I've had it for at least 2 months.
- drycounty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, Toast 8 offers spanning support which is something they should have had back in version 5. Why it took them so long to get it implemented is beyond me. They lost my $$$ now and I'm happy using Backup.
- nixfu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>but I hadn't heard it lasts less than a year. Lightscribe label or Disc?
The Lightscribe labels don't last very long at all....the more ligh they are exposed to the quicker they disappear.
"According to Hewlett-Packard Development Company's tests, when discs are exposed to indoor lighting, they will last up to **NINE MONTHS**
with no image degradation once the disc is labeled"
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=13449 - piwy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i just keep the disks in the case they came in until I'm about to use them. never had any problem.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Non-registration link: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/01/technology/01toast.html?ex=1327986000&en=813254441a1b95a5&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss
- meshman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Roxio software was written by the son of satan himself. Their PC products are a disaster. They took over Easy CD Creator and butchered it into the equivilent of a trojan. They took over Videowave and enhanced its blue screen capabilities. God knows what they've done to Toast.
- ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can't you just pour oil on it and toss a lighted match at it?
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Powdered toast?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was hoping for a program that will decrypt dvds that mactheripper can't
- zwilliams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bleh, Toast is terrible. Every new version has just added to the bloat. I used to use Toast (from 5 to 7) until I got sick and tired of it and switched to Burn (free) and LiquidCD (free) which do more than enough and are fast and have small footprints.
- foomojive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you're crazy. disco costs money. burn doesn't. i really don't care if my software "smokes" as it burns. just burn the damn cd.
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nathos,
What about the strawberry tart? Does that come with much toast in it? - MikeFromAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I DLed this from alt.binaries.mac.applications last night and I have to agree completely. It sucks. Hopefully the TiVo app will still work after I revert to Toast 7.
- Ryan001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I had to go with my gut here and if Apple were to choose one format over another I would say that they would lean toward Blu-ray. I use Apple's DVD Studio Pro and the last few versions that have been released have had support for Blu-ray burning. Even better Apple will use an ODD that supports both.
- MrMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah this article isn't really a review and the summary field tells us all we really need to know. Roxio makes a disk burning software.
This upgrade is just another usual upgrade. It's not like we can burn a Blu-Ray disk with our current Apple installed Superdrives or anything.
I am wary of this digg. - cryptoz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, and only two dozen new or improved features? They improved less than 24 features of the program? That's...so little!
- OriginalLucid1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You are crazy. Anything else?
- ThePottsDome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"smacks" A hidden Mac fanboy word ? smack smack smack
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1better than what? better than it was on mac before this? sure. better than windows? nope. weve had these for ages, try again :)
- gaper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Toast 8 was released in early Jan... and you have it for at least 2 months? how was it when it's in alpha and beta?
- OriginalLucid1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lame, who wants to dick around with registering (or finding ways around it) just to read an advert in the frick'n NYT? Which Sux btw.
- gaper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0can you share with me how to burn TiVo shows with Disco? I like Disco too but I don't know how to burn TiVo shows with it...
- Dragan0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I was hoping for thermite. I could have settled for gasoline though.
- wastern, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Get a MacPro and stick it in the second drive bay, thats what they put it there for. They knew the Pro users would want something in the near future, but it was too early to pick a winner so they left some room to play
But who actually uses Toast? I've never found a need for it - fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is old news. I already know about Toast 8...
...received a number of spam emails about it just last week. - DrSushi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2It's on the nytimes website and features a nice, glossy picture. Off course, it's an ad cloaked as an article.
But since up to 40 per cent (the numbers on that vary) of all press stuff is actually PR, no wonder. -
