- bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25I noticed this as well, and figured that when they said "iChat" they meant SMS.
- Daveecee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18SMS looks so much like iChat, AT&T probably just made a mistake.
- jrstanley, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17Or does it just mean AT&T need to get a clue?
- Dolomite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7good point, except the survey was rating EDGE performance, and we all know SMS doesn't use EDGE... interesting indeed.
- jdelsman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yeah, really. Texting is easy for me. Just as easy as on my Treo, if not easier!
- ripple123, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Do you have a iphone?
- PorchSong, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Trillian is coming out with an app for the iphone based off the astra client. -- check forums http://www.ceruleanstudios.com
- chogie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Yeah but SMS doesnt have anything to do with EDGE.
- rossnyc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5lol @ texting is too hard on a touch screen...hey douchey, dont speak unless you know what youre talking about...the touchscreen is easier to use than other phones Ive ever had...
still LOLing at the douchey - zeiben, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I'm still waiting for all this hype about the "internet" to finally pass...
- RyeBrye, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Old news - the developers said they would have an iChat app out by the October.... Or am I the only one who actually read some of these iphone articles that were on Digg?
- adairnic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I hope this is not a mistake. iChat would be a very welcome addition.
- JoeLeo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yup - I second chogie. SMS not equal to EDGE at all.
- jawbreaker4fs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think it was a smart move for the iPhone not to come with an iChat client from the get-go. Think about it... with about 500,000 new users in just a few days, the EDGE network is under enough stress just from people browsing the web with Safari. If they were to include an iChat app right off the bat, I'm sure the added stress would have brought the network to a crawl, if not shut it down completely. Another point to note is that currently the iPhone does not support concurrent voice/EDGE connections. Hopefully this can be remedied by firmware updates.. but if Apple were to include an EDGE iChat application at launch, and you kept your AIM on constantly, you'd never get any calls. I think that Apple/AT&T made a very smart move by not including iChat from the get-go. I would imagine that an application is probably in the works, but they need to get the issues with EDGE sorted out first. Until then, I'm happy to make calls or send emails as communication means with my iPhone.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I tried an iPhone out this weekend and was surprised that it was easier to type than I had expected. I don't see a problem using it for text messaging.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6at&t is a ***** sloppy operation
- flaminio, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The only way this could work is if Apple submitted this survey for them, which is certainly possible.
AT&T has had their head up their asses about the iPhone all along. I'm doubtful some customer relations people making a survey knew the real deal. It's more likely they're talking about the SMS chat interface... - logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1many plans have limited text messeges and some even charge per pessege. a chat service would be considerably cheaper if used enough.
- rossnyc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I just took this survey an hour ago...I was wondering what they meant by the ichat references as well...I'm thinking they have it confused with the SMS texting. Although it would be nice and I when they asked what features I'd like to see iChat was on my list.
- jdelsman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2http://www.tadalist.com/
- bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Aren't the SMS messages and calls over the EDGE network? (I'm honestly not too familiar on how Cell phones work).
- mysticmcj, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I wouldn't get any hopes up - Even if they are planning an iChat app, expect it to use SMS like so many of the other IM clients on wireless phones. If you thikn AT&T is going to let an opportunity to charge for that by, you are delusional. The best hope is for a tihrd party app, if that's ever opened up.
The only IM client that runs on wireless that doesn't seem to completely destroy batterly life without using SMS is the Sidekick IM service, and that has almost everything running on the backend servers, to take the load off of the phone itself. - RickLeeFS, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4How about a to-do list app? Oh, I'm sorry... that would be for WORK. [shudder]
- rossnyc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that site hurts my eyes...the digg imitation thing is baaaad too...
- wildsnake, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Who cares. Apple still didn't release iLife'07. Maybe all this crap will come out in November.
- parsap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1What you don't understand though is that a single trip to, say, Apple.com on Safari is the equivalent of sending about 5,000 AIM messages in terms of bandwidth. Trust me, the EDGE network can handle iChat just fine.
- jawbreaker4fs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Good point. I guess it really depends on the structure of AOLs OSCAR protocol. I would assume it uses an interrupt-driven system for recieving messages, but if it uses polling then you're looking at a few hundred checks for a new IM every few seconds which could easily cause a lot of bandwidth problems. Still.. the fact that the iPhone can't handle voice connections and EDGE data simultaneously is a pretty big deterrant for running any kind of IM software on the phone ATM.
- inkhead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No i agree with you Apple, clearly said it was coming, and that came out of Steve Jobs mouth himself.
- Dolomite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1no, only the internet data goes over edge, the phone calls and SMS messages go over a different band, thats why you can make calls and send SMS and not subscribe to a data plan.
- johnisfat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1EDGE THIS!
- parsap, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The protocol means nothing. Apple can easily create any kind of wrapper that they want. They would most likely use a push system, similar to how you receive Yahoo email on the iPhone. I can literally send myself a message using Mail.app and my iPhone will vibrate less than a second after I click send. If they can do that, they can do iChat.
- LilBambi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1To Do Lists are not just for work. ;-)
- clackerd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0it looks like just a typo, but i am down to hear what conspiracies pop out of the heads of the fringe apple- and AT&T-hating diggers.
- wheresaldo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This means that people at AT&T are idiot... AT&T does not want iChat in the phone, AT&T want us to use SMS as much as possible until we go over the 200 text limit and they can make money from us... Evil AT&T and Apple
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I want iChat AV on my iPhone.

http://int.edu.org - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Uhm, did no one but me hear when Apple said 'iChat isn't ready yet and wont be available on launch day...' implying, clearly, that they're working on it.
Even if that wasn't the case, isn't it obvious there will be an iChat for the iPhone? Seems like 'duh' if you ask me. - PorchSong, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Here is the official blog link with pics: http://blog.ceruleanstudios.com/?p=162
- stympman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0The iCard feature where you will not need your wallet anymore. Credit cards, Driver license, and all other card would be on the iPhone.
- DevilsAdv0cate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Maybe they'll integrate a voice recognition capability so that you can just talk into your phone and it types the text for you! Then, on the receiving end, a text reader will read the text back!
I'll bet after a few years, they figure out how to to just allow two people to talk to each other real-time through this thing! AMAZING! - mscman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Except it's currently a web-only beta. This would be fine if the EDGE network didn't suck... Now if they can convince Apple to open up the iPhone for it, then I'll be impressed. It's much more likely that Apple will instead just release their own iChat for the iPhone.
- kazamx, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1They tried this in Europe a few years ago. They made your texts message conversations look like an IM window. The idea was to encourage you to treat SMS more like IM and send many many more messages. It was a pretty big flop and no one really (if ever) used it. I think some phones still come with it, but the idea of selling it as a feature died almost as soon as it started.
- LilBambi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1It would be if you could flip to landscape on the phone for TXTing and other typing items if you so desire. Maybe in iPhone 2.0.
- Wilddigi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0No one what what Apple is doing when it comes to the EDGE servers. It's a joint partnership. Maybe AT&T is going to upgrade their servers to accomidate Apple's iChat.
- mwny, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I use my blackberry messenger and google talk for blackberry extensively on at&t's edge network and wouldn't want a data phone without them. I just don't see the point in paying for text messages when I pay for unlimited data.
- diggjones, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I took the survey and iChat was not on it. Messaging was though.
- Radan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Tell me something that Apple _is not_ planning for the iPhone...
- uninvolved, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0AT&T presents the iBush key logger, mmmfff I mean chat program? o.O
(yeah yeah i know i know, politics... I just had to though) - bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Those evil AT & T bastards, wanting to charge for the right to use their infrastructure!!! HOW DARE THEM!
- houndeyex, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3Unfortunately.
