- cost to buy = OK
- cost to use = too much - Zippo, on 06/15/2009, -1/+151Wow, that's awful. People should have a choice whether or not they want to be in a contract... certainly not be forced into 2-years...
The fact that they're threatening customers with "sub-par" performance is dickish to say the least.
***** AT&T. - Me1000, on 06/15/2009, -1/+111AT&T simply doesn't get it do they?
***** AT&T!
EDIT:
and you know what, I'm a pretty big Apple fanboy anyone who knows me will attest to that; but, ***** Apple too if they extend this ***** contract with AT&T for the iPhone. - superpixel, on 06/15/2009, -5/+87AT&T doesn't have to care, sadly. As the sole provider of the iPhone, currently one of the hottest (like it or not) gadgets of the 21st century, they can basically tell everyone to eat it or go home. Just like Apple does, which I guess means they are perfect partners for each other.
- theduffster89, on 06/16/2009, -0/+58AT&T is the only reason I dont get an Iphone.....Apple needs to allow more carriers have the Iphone and let the customers choose what service they like.....AT&T BLOWS!!!!
- FrameWraith, on 06/16/2009, -1/+58You really can't announce you're trolling when you attempt to troll.
- CyberSkull, on 06/15/2009, -0/+43Being a telcom, it goes without saying that AT&T are dicks, but with this they are really trying to stand out in dickery.
- idc5, on 06/16/2009, -1/+39All American Telecommunication companies are dicks. not just AT&T
charging for incoming texts, are you ***** serious? - supermanly, on 06/16/2009, -0/+36You're staying at 0 bud.
- Elranzer, on 06/16/2009, -0/+34Another unfortunate side effect of the AT&T monopoly on the iPhone.
Trust me, if the iPhone were officially available for T-Mobile or Verizon as well, AT&T would never pull this *****. But they're basically better that people will agree to anything to own an iPhone.
***** Apple for going into business with AT&T. - S1ngular1ty1, on 06/16/2009, -1/+32Troll fail.
- ppan1, on 06/16/2009, -6/+30Jailbreak, unlock, switch to T-Mobile, enjoy.
- S1ngular1ty1, on 06/16/2009, -2/+26And enjoy no 3G.
- slyzxx, on 06/16/2009, -0/+23***** AT&T if verizon had the iphone i would switch over.
- dusingaz, on 06/16/2009, -0/+21Maybe AT&T is doing all these bad things now because Apple is not extending the contract.
- GCarden, on 06/15/2009, -0/+21If the rumors are true and Verizon does get the iPhone sometime in the nearish future, I will be laughing SO hard...
- vonbroner, on 06/16/2009, -2/+21With a move like that, you'd think AT&T's decisions were made by the same guy making Sony's.
- blacklilyninja, on 06/16/2009, -2/+20Dear AT&T,
***** you and your contracts. ***** you... right in the face! - ellerich, on 06/15/2009, -3/+21Apple is complicit
- greenmacaw, on 06/16/2009, -3/+21And the fact that no one has filed a suit against apple and AT&T for illegal trade practices, price fixing, monopoly and RICO law violations shows how complacent the public and government has become to this crap.
- Charlie1er, on 06/16/2009, -2/+19They won't, just look how they stab AT&T at WWDC conference.
- captspaulding, on 06/16/2009, -0/+17The day I can use my current cell company is the day I buy a Iphone. Until then, both Apple and AT&T can suck my balls.
- lostngone, on 06/16/2009, -1/+18Ok this is off topic, I am a AT&T customer and I own a iPhone 3G and I want to upgrade to a 3Gs. I fully understand I have to pay the non-subsidized full price for the iPhone 3Gs or wait till early 2010 until my contract expires to buy it at the discounted subsidized price.
My question is if I buy the iPhone at full market value/price why the F*** is it still carrier locked to AT&T? If I am paying full price shouldn't I be able to use it on any carrier of my choice? - stuffradio, on 06/16/2009, -0/+17As bad as you make it sound, us Canadians are forced in to 3 year contracts with the iPhone!
- Acqua206, on 06/16/2009, -0/+16I've been with Verizon for close to 6 years now. Yes, their versions of phones tend to be neutered or disabled in some way so you have to get everything within Verizon's walled garden. However, they leave the smartphones untouched, usually. Yeah, they'll get the version with less ram or ***** with GPS but thats about it. So if Verizon considers the iPhone a true smartphone, they will leave it well enough alone.
- pradaaddict, on 06/16/2009, -0/+15Wow, thats horrifying. I always thought people bitching about AT&T really had no idea how bad it could get compared to Canadian Telco's but that is really disgusting behaviour on AT&Ts part. I really hope they get a massive amount of bad press that forces them to back off.
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -1/+16I'm pretty sure if that happened and if Verizon doesn't ***** with the iPhone AT ALL, then people will being flocking to Verizon like flies to honey. AT&T only cares about numbers, not their customers, they'll learn the hard way what happens when you're like that.
- DeathJux, on 06/16/2009, -1/+16His obvious and easy solution is to unlock the thing and switch carriers.
- crazytucker, on 06/16/2009, -1/+16Bingo, lock in customers.
- nogami, on 06/16/2009, -0/+14Sounds a lot like AT&T's exclusive on the iPhone will be up soon, so they're trying to force as many people as possible to get a contract before the exclusive is gone and they have competition.
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -2/+16They won't have the iPhone forever. Way to plan for the future AT&T.
- Barackalypse, on 06/16/2009, -0/+14Palm releases the Pre and AT&T fires back by being sneaky in trying to lock in prepaid users to 2 year contracts? Hardware exclusivity sucks.
- Elranzer, on 06/16/2009, -0/+13Absolutely untrue, Keddren. Verizon only has a custom phone firmware for non-smartphones. All Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Palm OS, etc smartphones are not touched by Brew or Verizon.
- Me1000, on 06/16/2009, -1/+14Well there is no doubt that Apple is not happy with AT&T, but sometimes with enough zeros after that dollar sign not being happy no longer matters when entering into a contract.
- icndvl, on 06/16/2009, -2/+14Android will work with any carrier. It is predictable that it will bring more competition and AT&T is gonna suffer if they don't treat their customers better.
The smart early adopters don't put up with stuff like this. - TylerDuhrdan, on 06/16/2009, -0/+11I ***** ATT by not having an iPhone, never have, and never will until it is available on any network I want. I also ***** ATT by not being a customer for any of their products.
If and when Apple ends their contract for the iPhone with ATT, ATT will start loosing alot of money from screwing people left and right, however it will always be in ATT's best interest to pay Apple whatever Apple wants for the exclusivity.
The strangest part is I don't see ATT pushing the iPhone at Wal Mart, Mall Kiosks, or any ATT stores other than the Larger stores. - inactive, on 06/16/2009, -1/+12It's too embarrassing telling people you have t-mobile
- Spiltpickle, on 06/16/2009, -1/+12I'm betting that apple can't be too happy that AT&T has pretty much crippled two of the largest features of the new iphone os / hardware. Apple would be stupid to not be looking at all their options, and one thing they aren't (now, the past is different) is stupid. They're smart at what they do, making money.
I love the iphone. It has it's flaws, but overall I think it's the best option for a lot of people right now.
However, because of AT&T's practices, I've sold mine and switched to a blackberry. I'll probably be checking out a Pre soon, just because of Sprint's Simply Everything plan being $50 or so less than an equivalent AT&T plan.
I'll be giving up a lot, but with companies like these, the quickest way to let them know how you feel is to take your money elsewhere. - inactive, on 06/16/2009, -1/+11The phone is only $199... it's the $90/month plans that are expensive. The phone is only 2 monthly payments. They get you for over $2000 in the end including the price of the phone in the 2 year contract.
Luckily I unlocked mine and paid the cancellation fee and am now very happy on T-Mobile's cheaper service. :) - peestandingup, on 06/16/2009, -0/+10Yep. I have, from the moment it was announced, said that the iPhone being exclusive to AT&T was the worst decision they could have ever made for their customers.
So what I wanna know is, where's my God damn cookie?? - peterinjapan, on 06/16/2009, -0/+9Ugh, I live in Japan and love this system since I can use my old iPhone for the month or so I'm in country. I will obviously never buy an iPhone with a contract if I don't live in the damn country full time.
- supakoopa, on 06/15/2009, -1/+10Does this really surprise anyone? The whole thing was a work-around in the first place.
- skellener, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8I'm soooo glad I don't have AT&T!
- m0n0kr0m3, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8Overheard on a commuter train "Friends don't let friends use T-Mobile" Too damn funny.
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8So a company with a history of treating their customers like crap does something crappy to their customers? How is this surprising to anyone?
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8yeah. back in the day before unlimited texts and before AIM would ask for permission before sending instant messages in texts you could FLOOOOOD someones account and bill. just racking it up like mad
- strangewill, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8I like how everyone is like "***** AT&T" but no one is pissed that Apple partnered with them in the first place, and would line up to buy an iPhone as soon as they dropped AT&T, as if Apple is a victim or something.
- airwalke, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8Yes, because ALL Americans watch American Idol.
You're only preaching to the choir. - SPNKrPunk, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8First, they are not required to unlock the phone by law.
Second, what you should be really upset about is that you have to pay an unsubsidised price for the phone, and you still have to sign a new 2 year contract. - zylo47, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7I would too. AT&T is the most horrible service. It's rare that I don't get a dropped call before I'm actually finished with the conversation. I've had the iPhone for about 6 months now, and I'm ready to break contract, get the $99.00 sprint plan. Palm Pre here I come
