- CosmicBlend, on 04/21/2009, -4/+65How about doubling the 3G coverage area.. There is not nearly enough 3G coverage outside of major metropolitan areas.
- gkwait, on 04/21/2009, -4/+32How about a network that doesn't drop calls? Data is nice, but after all it is a phone and should act that way.
- chudgoo, on 04/21/2009, -0/+26I plan to give a ***** when/if it actually happens.
- Vaiper, on 04/21/2009, -5/+22I am not impressed. It sounds like they are trying to provide a service that they have already been advertising for 3 years. *****.
- a2fan, on 04/21/2009, -3/+19Remember back when the geeks thought the AT&T logo looked a little too much like the Death Star... the next generation calls it The Eye of Sauron.
- Frozo, on 04/21/2009, -2/+17Read as: "AT&T plans to double its 3G network fees." Of course as an "upgradable" option...
Just speculation, but Im the perpetual cynic. - areohbe, on 04/21/2009, -0/+11Let's get ANY 3G in Vermont... c'mon!
- MacEnvy, on 04/21/2009, -3/+12I've never dropped a call with AT&T. I've had them for 4.5 years, most of that time in a rural EDGE area. Maybe I've just been lucky.
- minastirth, on 04/21/2009, -0/+9I believe they are prepping up to offer tethering with the new iPhone. I don't believe that they would double it because of consumer complaints.
- therightscoop, on 04/21/2009, -0/+9"The tests, if implemented, would bring the theoretical maximum speed to 7.2 megabits per second -- double the current THEORETICAL maximum speed."
My speed never gets even close to the currently touted speed, so it must be theoretical. - Frozo, on 04/21/2009, -1/+9Covering it with speeds so slow that they are being sued because of it? You have it backwards. Fix the infrastructure first, then expand. You'll be happier in the long run.
- Coreal07, on 04/21/2009, -0/+8Being in Chicago, I have full 3G... But hey, if they want to double my download speed, who am I to complain?
- TheFounder, on 04/21/2009, -1/+8I wish they would test it here... like 80% or so of their coverage area in the US doesn't support 3G ... sending us to dialup speed.... so instead of handing out "super 3G" to the rest of the planet... how about giving the whole US 3G coverage....
- j0hnc0ry, on 04/21/2009, -0/+7Pretty exciting life?
- singebkdrft, on 04/21/2009, -0/+6I live in a metropolitan area and get a few calls dropped a week by them...
- u8myfoood, on 04/21/2009, -0/+5Same thing is happening with FIOS. They already had great speeds to start, but they decided to upgrade rather than expand to more dense populated areas of NYC
- peruvianidol, on 04/21/2009, -0/+5No. We just have cell phones.
- chokeaduck, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4Meanwhile, some of the other telcos begin their 4G buildout later this year, with LTE technology.
- voiceofid, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4where are you finding these payphones? because the last time i saw one was in a movie at a jail
- Asrrin29, on 04/21/2009, -1/+5You'd think that after major metropolitan areas they would start putting up towers near college campuses, since many people in the 18-24 demographic have iphones and smart phones. I still have yet to see 3G from where I go to school, it's a bummer.
- MistrBrownstone, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4Isn't AT&T sacrificing Edge capacity to increase the 3G capacity? I thought there was another article about a month back addressing this. I have a 3G phone, so this is good news for me, but there are still a lot of people out there with Edge devices.
- scottinks, on 04/21/2009, -1/+5Never had a dropped call either.
- Hulka, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4I have at least one dropped call a week with AT&T. My favorite was driving downtown Nashville and while going past the AT&T high-rise my call dropped and my phone said "No Service" at 9pm on a Friday night.
I think people in metropolitan areas have more dropped calls because of tower capacity. Each tower can only service so many subscribers so urban towers are heavily utilized and sometimes maxed out. - stoneyj, on 04/21/2009, -0/+4Does this mean my 3G might actually work at 3G speeds? Amazing...
- QubitTarutaru, on 04/22/2009, -0/+3Just give up on 3G, start working on 4G, so that we may one day catch up with the rest of the world.
- DocDrea323, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3While they're at it, they should probably work on their standard 2G network as well. My college campus in Western Illinois gets terrible service by AT&T. If I'm lucky, I get three bars inside buildings, but often I have no signal, even when I'm not in a basement or other area I would expect poor signal.
But yes, upgrade the 3G infrastructure. Upgrade major cities first, then major interstates. This should cover the needs of most Americans. Spread out from there. I'm not sure if putting emphasis on college campuses is necessarily a good idea. 3G will be competing with usually-campus wide wifi for data transfer. - GiantJr, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3Oh geeze what smart corporate troopers!
But what? They didn't take any federal bailout money to expand even more BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE GREEDY?
no wayyyy
AT&Ts coverage even if doubled is still a joke compared to the rest of the world. - SoundJudgment, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3Jack Bauer never loses a cell-phone call. Wonder what network he uses??
- Hercules, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3Great. Now it will be half as good coverage as Verizon. Only 10 years late.
Too bad their prices are still too high and their coverage is still too spotty. I'd swap from them, but I don't have many options in the GSM arena as I refuse to go Verizon because their CDMA stuff is *****. - mohrt, on 04/21/2009, -2/+5Agreed, fix the infrastructure first. It is ridiculous to have so many dead spots inside of big cities.
- michaelphw, on 04/21/2009, -1/+4AT&T does not cover the planet.
- Munceenuts, on 04/21/2009, -1/+4For iPhones it's $20 for edge $30 for 3G.
- protodon, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3I'm pretty sure cell phone coverage is slightly better than pay phone coverage.
- protodon, on 04/21/2009, -1/+4Demand and supply.
- roguepirate, on 04/21/2009, -1/+4I'm assuming the $30/month now turns into $40/month for the faster speeds
- surfacewound, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3They've been advertising a 7.2Mbit network for three years now? I must have missed those commercials.
- Neiby, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3There isn't enough 3G coverage IN major metro areas. The 3G coverage in the Denver Metro area is very spotty.
- deanc, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3yeh well why is my coverage in brooklyn height 11201 so ***** then???
- cyssero, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3I believe the $10 increase was because they are subsidising the handset significantly now - only $199 where as before it was $399 and originally $599.
- Malik05, on 04/21/2009, -0/+3Sprint already advertises 4G in LA (showing the Palm Pre) and 4G is available in Baltimore
http://www.nextel.com/en/solutions/mobile_broadban ... - vilago, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2i like my eggs scrambled thanks.
- badtiki, on 04/21/2009, -1/+3I plan to give a ***** when its affordable !
- jonahan52, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2Hrm I just got a txt the other day saying the 3G network around me was just updated. Seems a bit faster too.
- sops21, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2Too little too late, I switched to Sprint when I couldn't get ATNT service at my home in the middle of Los Angeles. Maybe we should of stepped up our networks before the iPhone, just a thought.
- mercano, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2We don't really have AT&T's network up here, we just have the towers they bought from Unicell a few months ago. Still, we've finally joined the rest of the 49 states by now actually having AT&T coverage.
- wrestlingnrj, on 04/21/2009, -3/+5So would that put them at 20% of the US covered?
- MBoudet, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2What a terrible idea. they definitely shouldn't have done this 3 years ago!
- laughtears, on 04/21/2009, -3/+5does this mean that the iDevices won't be jailbreaking free from the yolk of AT&T-only network coverage later this year. drat...
- pyrates, on 04/22/2009, -0/+2Sorry to disappoint you all but this will require you to purchase the newer model of the iphone 3g and the first comment explains why:
One thing the article neglects to mention is that the improved 3G will not work on current or older iPhones. The 3G that is being added requires a new radio in the device. - qbthemc, on 04/21/2009, -0/+2Are you talking about the glue company.
