- CreativeGuy, on 10/11/2008, -3/+42"enjoying the service" sounds like "enjoying the loophole." These phone companies aren't stupid. If there's a way for the customer to get something for less, you can be sure that they WILL eventually find it and close it up. One way or another, if you have an iPhone, you WILL be paying at least $70 per month. The obscenely greedy ***** at the phone companies will make sure of that.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -1/+27Im getting pretty damn sick and tired of AT&T. Its time for someone to shove their foot up those bastards' asses.
- newman8r, on 10/11/2008, -1/+21I am on this plan. This sucks.
I was going to buy the 3G pretty soon too... but since I have an original jailbroken iPhone I've just decided to unlock it for another carrier. Let me make it clear - If they take away this unlimited data plan I WILL be leaving AT&T and unlocking my phone for another carrier and NOT buy the 3G.
I already pay ~$75+ for my total montly plan. Now they're raising texting prices to 20 cents each too! Hah, if they want to do this I'm so out. - NeoDarkSaver, on 10/11/2008, -2/+18this sucks... jut plain sucks for those who are enjoying the service.
- System6, on 10/11/2008, -2/+16This is a loophole, but not a huge one. I currently work for a rival cell phone company and can affirm that he cell phone contract is on its way out anyways.
The contract is to subsidize the cost of the phone and in the late 90s, making the affordable for everyone with free phones, etc. Cellphones are not just for talking anymore and their value and worth is seen by many consumers who are ready to pay for a better quality product. This can be reflected in the original high price of the first iphone and the rapid expansion and growth of the PDA and the percent of people who carry them. - SouthsideIrish, on 10/11/2008, -0/+9No, more like 60.
- KMartSheriff, on 10/11/2008, -1/+9Good luck with that, because every other phone company you turn to will do the same thing.
- understudy, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8As someone who has worked for AT&T, let me just say that AT&T is one of the worst corporations in the country.
_ - wafflez, on 10/11/2008, -0/+65 gb*
- teiren474, on 10/11/2008, -0/+6In Canada we pay $30 a month for 1GB of data..... ( plus $6.95 system access fee and $.50 911 fee and %12 tax ) Oh and that's on a 3 year term, We don't even get the option of Pay and talk
- newman8r, on 10/11/2008, -1/+7you don't seem to know much about the situation. I am on this plan, and I never pay less than 70 bucks a month for service. It's sometimes as much as $100/month
I'm not enjoying any loophole, but I use the data plan a lot for my work and 5 mb per month doesn't even come close to what I need. If they do this I will be changing carriers, thankfully I have a jailbroken iPhone.
This really screws me over and creates a problem for me... I'm hoping this is all BS or that I'm grandfathered in (doubt it though) - SouthsideIrish, on 10/11/2008, -3/+8What does Apple have to do with it?
- SouthsideIrish, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4There is no contract, it is pre-paid, and yes they can change it anytime.
- davidwasman, on 10/11/2008, -3/+7So much for being able to use PDANet on my laptop.
Damn. - lukasmack, on 10/11/2008, -4/+8Do you reckon they will pay the customer a fee as they terminated the contract?
Yeah I doubt it too. - fangorious, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4@VieRelative: "But then cingular got bought out by AT&T which should never have been allowed by regulators"
No. SBC & BellSouth started Cingular as a joint venture. Cingular bought AT&T Wireless. SBC bought AT&T (local and long distance since Cingular already owns what was AT&T wireless) and kept the AT&T name. AT&T (SBC) bought BellSouth (took a long time to get approval, many concessions given, like the ability to buy DSL without a phone line, but in practice that's only if you get DSL from AT&T). Cingular, now owned by single company called AT&T, is now named AT&T. - fangorious, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4@Jeffler:
Wow yourself. 3G == 3rd generation of standards. They include UMTS/HSDPA, W-CDMA, and EV-DO. The iPhone 3G uses GSM (a 2G standard) and UMTS/HSDPA (a 3G standard). The original iPhone uses GSM/EDGE (a 2G standard).

- VieRelative, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4Yeah, I got the go plan because it seemed to be the most consumer friendly. But then cingular got bought out by AT&T which should never have been allowed by regulators and now customers are slowly getting screwed all over again.
- chaosium, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3Yeah, no regulators at all care about AT&T.
- jayoh, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3no, part of (non-prepaid) contract plans carry unlimited bandwidth included in the price.
- iota, on 10/11/2008, -2/+5And if you had read the ***** article, you would have known that this only affects non-contract prepaid phones, so your idea wouldn't have worked, as there was no contract and no termination fee of any kind.
Thanks for playing. - Technopundit, on 10/12/2008, -1/+3Those smudged-up iphones are looking less pretty every day.
- solidus636, on 10/11/2008, -2/+4...what about on Family Plans? You pay 40 bucks for the iPhone, and 60 if you want unlimited texting along with it. That's less than $70.
- cipher64, on 10/11/2008, -1/+3I've also been using this package for a while now, ATT can count another customer lost when they discontinue this package. And I for one have used this service purely on the device and haven't tethered.
- brainded, on 10/11/2008, -1/+3I got the text last night, this sucks, hopefully i can find a way around it because i really dont want to switch. Just another reason for me to hate them.
- teiren474, on 10/11/2008, -0/+2I'm not going to pay for internet on my phone when I have nav in my car, wifi at home, school, friends place, work etc etc, as far as I know only Fido will turn off data on your iPhone and from what I have seen Fido's rate plans are WAY more reasonable then rogers for some reason.. so in the coming months when my telus contract is up I guess i getting a Fido iPhone
- OHGAlpha, on 10/11/2008, -8/+10Cheap-Ass Corporate hoes
- Mahoney07, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1Does this pay as you go make you pay for how much bandwidth you use with 3g? If so I will not get an iPhone.
- tw3nz0r, on 10/11/2008, -1/+2Reading the comments from the article, this affects GoPhone Pay As You Go users, and not GoPhone Pick Your Plan users, like me :)
Edit: While I don't own an iPhone, I do subscribe to the $20 unlimited MEdia Net. - kingfoot, on 10/11/2008, -2/+3really? thats it?
that kinda sounds nice. i mean i dont talk too much on cell phones but i would surely use internet a lot. for $60/mo with a onetime $200 phone charge? seems like a good deal. at least, before they get rid of the unlimited. - ZombieSociety, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1When your only other option is T-Mobile, you're shooting yourself in the foot big time.
- 12Iceman, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1There goes my iPhone plan. At least they let you purchase the unlimited Media Net up to three months in advance, so I should be able to continue to use it through January as long as I renew the max amount before Nov. 12th (assuming they don't just take my money and still cancel the service).
- winnopeg, on 10/11/2008, -1/+2Should've bought sooner, at first they had 6GB a month for $30 + fees & voice.
- stuffradio, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Damn AT&T is one of the main reasons that we can't use fring on the 3G network (or so I've been told) =[
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -3/+4You're more of a tool for thinking that people who own an iPhone are tools.
- tomz17, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1You are on the PayG prepaid plan and pay > $70 a month ? are you an idiot?
Why not get a pick-your-plan or just go postpaid? You will get way more bang for your buck. - dcharti, on 10/11/2008, -0/+1I used to pay $50/month for data when I owned a BlackJack on AT&T. I certainly don't mind $30/month for data on a far more capable device.
- kd1s, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1The iPhone isnt' a deal no matter how one looks at it. It's too bad though, I like the interface on it. I opted for the Touch instead even if it's 802.11g wireless kills the battery rather quickly. I keep wireless shut off most of the time.
- stuffradio, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Who are you paying with? I'm paying $30/month for 6 GB data plan with Fido..
- tomz17, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Genius plan... except for ... well you know... the logistics...
God stopped making spectrum a few billion years ago. Pretty much everything set aside for cellular radio is already allocated to one of the big companies in the US... (and additional spectrum auctions are rare and run in the BILLIONS of dollars)
so yeah.... good luck with that... - SouthsideIrish, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1If you are in the hacking community like I am the the 1st generation iPhone = 2G, and the 2nd generation iPhone = 3G. I have never seen anyone call the 3G iPhone, 2G.
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Does this change apply to non-iPhones too?
I have a Cingular 8125. I am strongly considering switching to a pay-as-you-go plan. Can I get the $20/month pay-as-you-go unlimited data plan for my 8125? - microview2007, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1They can't change my plan midstream without breaking the contract. If they do that I'll be able to opt out without early termination fees and will move back to T-Mobile. Hello Android.
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2008, -1/+2Besides, you can buy a cheap Chinese iphone knockoff for about a hundred bucks. And that's what Android promises.
- 3GIphoneuser1, on 12/26/2008, -0/+0I too have PAYG paired with a 3G Iphone, an easy way to get through the bull ATT has delt us is simple. IF you have PAYG (pay as you go) buy the 5MB internet add on for 9.99 and turn off your internet connection and ONLY use the WIFI connect... So you will be accessing free internet without depleting your current 5MB package. Only problem is you can only get online in WIFI areas so if you are dependent on internet then use the 5MB sparingly when not in WIFI areas. Just a simple fix for the no more unlimited internet.
- nightalon, on 11/30/2008, -0/+0Well this is my last night for AT&T's $20 per month, HSDPA for a BlackBerry and an Option GT Max data card. I used to tell all my foreign friends about this one if they were staying around for even a week. It was easy as pie to tether through your cell phone.
I'm running MP3 streaming right until 12 to see if it cuts out then, haha.
The reason I'm so passionate about this is that the cell phone companies have to see how substantially demand would increase if the price dropped. Demand for this sort of service is highly elastic, but once you have it, you do not want to go back.
Essentially, yes, this was a loophole, but I vainly hoped a new era of cheap mobile internet had begun.
Speedtest: 713 kb/s up, 319 kb/s down.
Location: Anywhere. Well almost.
Price: $20. No contract.
RIP
(I will note that I can pop my SIM card out of my AT&T Fuze and use it in my data card with wap.cingular, but then I can't receive calls at the same time. Here's to one step backward.) - bicycleman, on 10/12/2008, -1/+1If anyone is interested in starting up a new phone company please contact me. I am drafting up plans right now to form a new phone company starting with VOIP then going to wireless soon after. The one difference with this company, it will be customer centered and not be some communist run organization looking at screwing over it's customers.
THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IF YOU FALL INTO PAY-ASS-YOU-GO IS CANCEL YOUR SERVICE ON THE SAME DAY AND MIGRATE TO ANOTHER CARRIER. (Sorry for the caps, I'm passionate about this one.) This mass exodus of customers will surely show a dent in profits and get someone fired.
Hurray for number portability!! (Which I thought was meant to help to put a stop to crap like this.) It just shows that all the big carriers are in cahoots with each other and run like a cartel. - newman8r, on 10/12/2008, -1/+1the article says 5mb when it quotes the received text message... but yeah it must be 5gb.
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -1/+1It says this affects pre paid users, what about off contact users?
