- mecharabbit, on 07/18/2008, -3/+61This is so disheartening. I mean, if you can't trust a big telecom company, who can you trust?
- Mjeacoma, on 07/18/2008, -9/+65Isn't this false advertising? No legal repercussions?
- orangefly, on 07/18/2008, -0/+46the government, of course....
- zezerik, on 07/18/2008, -4/+32AT&T mistakenly announces a bait-and-switch ad for iPhone users...again.
Thats the proper title. - pktgumby, on 07/18/2008, -3/+22I wouldn't think it would be false advertising since it was stated to be an error. Would only be false advertising if they were intentionally trying to mislead...based entirely on my own made up (mis)understanding of the law, of course.
- ralphthemagi, on 07/18/2008, -0/+17I just hope this constitutes a ToS change so I can get out of my 2yr contract.
- BNSF9647, on 07/18/2008, -2/+14"service is provided by AT&T"
Now thats an oxymoron if I ever saw one!
AT&T is the sole reason I have not and will not get an IPhone. - pktgumby, on 07/18/2008, -0/+11Couldn't have been nailed too badly, seeing as how it didn't deter them from screwing up again.
- barstegry, on 07/18/2008, -0/+11Blue... NO GREEN!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGHHHHHH!!!!!!
- Malacandra95, on 07/18/2008, -3/+13Well, if anyone should threaten to sue over it, I'm sure Congress would be happy to offer them retroactive immunity. And then George Bush would sign it.
- peestandingup, on 07/18/2008, -0/+6What a great company.
- tomz17, on 07/18/2008, -3/+8Do you know for sure whether that include att wireless users?
Anyway, this seems STUPID to me. The iphone plan has unlimited edge/3g data. This means that any data not sent over wifi is using cellular data!?!?! Why aren't they begging users to use the wifi? - sonictonic, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5Well, I just called 611 from my iPhone and the rep I got says I SHOULD have free wifi access at AT&T Hotspots. I even read her the CNET article verbatim, and she checked with a supervisor, came back and said if I am prompted for a username and password, that using my mobile number should let me in. She said if that does not work, that I need to call the WiFi support #, which she gave me.
Was she pulling my chain, or is this article totally off track?
This confusion is maddening. - ancientshoes, on 07/18/2008, -0/+5if only there was some kind of "governmental organ" to protect us from this kind of thing...
- neosublime, on 07/18/2008, -1/+5You do know that you can unlock an iPhone to use with another carrier, right?
- ajwinder, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4Yeah, absolutely, it makes perfect sense that they'd have to exchange money between divisions. AT&T wouldn't be happy if AT&T was saving AT&T money.
Seriously? Did that seriously make sense to you? - pixelperfect, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4I believe they are pointing out which of the "***** the ...." response is in play here... and I also think they must have mistakenly put BRITISH instead of AMERICAN.
- bhavinp, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4don't forget Exxon Mobile, they are also kind hearted trustworthy people as well.
- DaviDTC, on 07/18/2008, -1/+5They probably got a bonus check cause in those few hours the phone sales went up 200%
- mediaphile, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3Psyche!
- Chicken, on 07/19/2008, -2/+5And obama too.
- fangorious, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3sure, but people who had unlocked their 2g iPhone to use with T-Mobile in the US saw their phones bricked for a few months after an update that didn't reset the baseband code. When an update finally came out that did reset the baseband code they were all again locked to AT&T. Some people aslo don't want firmware downgrades to be part of the unlocking process, which has been the case in the US with some of the 2g firmware releases. And I haven't heard of any confirmed unlocking of a 3g iPhone so far, just an unlock of the 2.0 firmware on the 2g iPhone.
- ridingtime, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Can they just friggen announce this already!
- mediaphile, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2You mean AT&T. Apple has nothing to do with this.
- ssavoy, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2Verizon surely isn't any better.
- ssavoy, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2Starbucks is switching to AT&T. Most already have; some have both. T-Mo not happy.
- mrgermy, on 07/18/2008, -1/+3Seconded
- bradleyland, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2The answer is "What is your favorite color," Alex.
- shitton, on 07/19/2008, -0/+2It's corporate America, so they'll get promoted. They obviously aren't quite at their highest level of incompetence yet.
- mrgermy, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2@fangorious: exactly. And you are right about them not having of unlocked the iPhone 3G. Though I'm sure it'll come in due time.
- Laminarcissus, on 07/19/2008, -1/+3That's because they know they're gullible because, well, they bought the iPhone.
- mrgermy, on 07/18/2008, -1/+3Yup. But I'd rather not risk bricking it.
But I'll rephrase: AT&T is the sole reason I have not and will not get a (locked) iPhone. - unitedatheism, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1So, free WiFi for the iphone is a lie eh?
You had been already ripped off once, why not rip you off twice? - Lewiji, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Man, you guys have it bad. On O2 in the UK we get access to 2 sets of free wifi hotspots, BT OpenWorld (which is pretty much all public paid wifi) and The Cloud, which is in most bars, cafes, etc.
- ncaauwe, on 07/23/2008, -0/+1Laugh if you want, I love the iPhone. I've used it enough to prefer it over any phone I've had before, including Windows Mobile and BlackBerry. I have an iPod touch right now and love it, I'm just tired of not having my texts and calls and everything come to that. I'm tired of carrying multiple devices.
I'm not ***** myself, I know I'll hate AT&T. But my current carrier is worthless to me in LA, I'm not going to keep paying what I'm paying for 1X speeds. I have 3G here, I'll take that and a better phone experience over my BlackBerry, thank you very much :) - wbbb617, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1there must be some clause in that telecom immunity bill, that allows them to post this false advertising.
- WaveRunningNakd, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1"AT&T knows Wi-Fi is hot, and free Wi-Fi even hotter, which is why we are proud to offer iPhone customers free access to the nation's largest Wi-Fi hot-spot network with more than 17,000 hot spots, including Starbucks. Now users can relax and access music, e-mail, and Web browsing services with their favorite blend in hand from the comfort of their favorite location."
How exactly is this a "mistake"? Obviously someone in their PR dept wrote this, and they did so for a reason. No, "mistake" is the wrong word.
*****... I just ordered an iPhone, too. I have a feeling I'm going to regret leaving Verizon. - cowboy77061, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1no mistake. money hungry companies like to use "trickery" in order to get more customers. they'll just claim it was a mistake.
- yodinosaur, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1"Isn't this false advertising? No legal repercussions?"
sarcasm? - digichris, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Whole thing is they did it more than once.. somone needs to sue them. Get us all some free Wifi
- mediaphile, on 07/18/2008, -1/+2I thought Starbucks was T-Mobile
- ieure, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Hey, at least I got a bite of the carrot while they were waving it in my face.
- ncaauwe, on 07/19/2008, -0/+1Wow...just wow. I can't wait to see the Apple/AT&T contract end in about 4 years and see the iPhone go to other carriers and just watch the amount of customers AT&T loses, myself included. I'm not even on AT&T yet, but I will be buying an iPhone soon now that I finally live within their coverage. But I'm doing it for the PHONE, not their ***** service. I'm going to be laughing my ass off at the rude awaking they get when the iPhone becomes available on other carriers.
- TonyTheTerrible, on 07/18/2008, -19/+20AT&T is the ***** of a company, and a pile of worthless garbage in a league of it's own.
Down with AT&T. - mdman, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1LOL.... suckers
- SLockhart, on 07/19/2008, -4/+4Yeah, down with profits and screw capitalism. It's not as if you can choose not to buy an iphone.
- Giga, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0"I'm going to be laughing my ass off at the rude awaking they get when the iPhone becomes available on other carriers."
And I'm going to be laughing at you as you knowingly sign your soul away to the devil for a phone that is frankly overhyped. People survived before the iPhone, people can survive without it now. - TonyTheTerrible, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1yeah, because im talking about the iphone right?
- Giga, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0They have. Twice. Problem is, they don't actually provide it.
