- praveenmarkandu, on 10/11/2007, -4/+135The iPhone is so cool. it can speed up EDGE
- KenMo, on 10/11/2007, -6/+82Yes Speak UP!!! Demand the return of the slower speed.
- e2superman, on 10/11/2007, -11/+58I commented on the fact that an RF engineer at AT&T LA who I know said people will see a 10% boost with the upgrades and then people digg me down because they would rather believe rumor than truth. Go figure.
- MateyO, on 10/11/2007, -0/+43Mine (Parker, Co) went from 44kbps to 173 kbps....that's a tad more than 10%.
The conspiracy theorist in me thinks they're doing this, not to make the experience better, but to prepare for a TON more phones with all-you-can-eat data plans. - kolywater, on 10/11/2007, -3/+42makes me wonder.. if the iphone should succeed (get 1% of the market), and over time gather more steam, will that give apple greater influence over the cell phone industry? will they force the entire sector to improve? after all, the success of itunes and the ipod probably contributed to legally DRM-free songs, which is a real win for consumers (given the ridiculous nature of the RIAA).
wonder if the hype surrounding the iphone has galvanized at&t to do things like bust their ass and improve EDGE.. should be an interesting year ahead in tech. - aceman87, on 10/11/2007, -1/+38I just tried it on my phone...it's true. Not blazing fast, but definitely quicker than before.
- Waskonator, on 10/11/2007, -11/+45w00t! all that band width and no way to share media.
- PerennialTears, on 10/11/2007, -4/+31Edge customers speak up!!!!
- locojones, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29"AT&T - Now with less slow web surfing!"
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28I'm running Bittorrent right now from my iPhone, these speeds are incredible!
- satzio, on 10/11/2007, -8/+30One of the commenters at the bottom of the article writes something like "Cingulatti" like "illuminati". I just found my new viral meme for cingular! Thank you engadget! The Cingulatti has spoken: ANNUIT CAEPTIS
- bbianchi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21I am down in Los Angeles right now on business but my EDGE speeds are very noticeably quicker. I dont have my mac or my data cable so I cant say exactly what they are now, but its very much so faster.
- WillyWonka, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Partially because they need to handle larger areas. European countries aren't that big, nor is Japan area wise.
- PerennialTears, on 10/11/2007, -7/+24Edge customers are speaking up here: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=321459 & http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1189862
- ApocOne, on 10/11/2007, -20/+36You guys need to start thinking logically.
EDGE has a theoretical limit of 236 kbps, with the current radio equipment installed on mobile phones for the current EDGE standard. This is a theoretical limit that has yet to be reached.
Even beyond that, latency is more important that data transfer rates for mobile networks like EDGE. Since you guys still see 600-900ms, don't try to spin this like OMFG THE IPHONE IS SUDDENLY AWESOME AGAIN!
The reason such high speeds are being shown on these tests is because AT&T has allocated more bandwith to the proxy servers you connect to to connect to the internet (you connect to the proxy server, the proxy server connects to whatever website, and then pushes the content back to you.) Since you are probably connecting to the proxy server at the same speed as before (which is below the reported speeds), you won't be able to take advantage of this speed.
This is just a countermeasure to the expected increase in EDGE usage due to iphones. One person can't use up all the bandwith of an ATT proxy, but 10 people can. They are just upping the bandwith of their proxies so they can handle the increased load.
In otherwords, move along, nothing to see here. - Stephenishere, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17I looked around in wikipedia and this is what i found,
Edge is a digital mobile phone technology that allows it to increase data transmission rate and improve data transmission reliability. It is generally classified as a 2.75G network technology. EDGE has been introduced into GSM networks around the world since 2003, initially in North America. EDGE can carry data speeds up to 236.8 kbit/s for 4 timeslots (theoretical maximum is 473.6 kbit/s for 8 timeslots) in packet mode and will therefore meet the International Telecommunications Union's requirement for a 3G network
3GThe most significant feature offered by third generation (3G) mobile technologies is the capacity to support greater numbers of voice and data customers — especially in urban centres — as well as higher data rates at lower incremental cost than 2G.
By using the radio spectrum in bands identified, which is provided by the ITU for Third Generation IMT-2000 mobile services, it subsequently licensed to operators. 3G uses 5 MHz channel carrier width to deliver significantly higher data rates and increased capacity compared with 2G networks.
the transmission of 384 kbit/s for mobile systems and 2 Mbit/s for stationary systems. 3G users are expected to have greater capacity and improved spectrum efficiency, which will allow them to access global roaming between different 3G

- brundlefly76, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Its actually more a case of T-Mobile and Cingular being behind, Sprint and Verizon have very good 3g networks.
AT&T has HSDPA but the coverage is poor.
The reason why we lag though, is that Europe and Japan mandated a single wireless technology (GSM and CDMA respectively) which sped up adoption of virtually everything (we were even years behind in text messaging for christs sakes), while in the US competition was mandated and as a result our mobile phone dollars are not all focused on the same technology, which makes it slower and more expensive for everyone.
Just be glad you dont live in Canada, where the wireless data rates are simply obscene. - bigdawg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I live in the Kansas City, MO area and ran three test on my phone last night and got:
Lowest 326 kbs, next 412 kbs and the highest was 462 kbs.
I am really excited about the speed increase. - e2superman, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15My friend works the RF Engineering for LA on the AT&T Switch(es). He said upgrades on the network should provide maybe 10% boost on average for users. More depending on load but in major metro areas that is what they provisioned for.
- zephc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Actually, he called it Cigulatt, as in Cingular + AT&T -> CingulATT
- MrDo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Do you seriously believe that?
- BobOki, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Wonder if thats affecting my TMobile. Usually mine is around 45kbits... today:
Test #1. 94 kbits
Test #2. 142 kbits
Test #3. 100 kbits
Thats outta town here at work with only 2/3 bars with the 200k tests. - trghpy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11WTF, 3g just slowed down!!!
You bastards!!! - aserer511, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12damn....iPhone buyers may have just WON
- geminitojanus, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12No offense, but saying someone you know is working on upgrades is hearsay, which is technically still a rumor.
- greyfade, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8An "arresting" insight. Would you not, then, "take" one for yourself?
- kolywater, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8you know, talking on a mobile phone while driving is pretty unsafe in general. i'd actually prefer it if more people could learn to put down their freakin' phone and just drive without smashing into me.
- ajgv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7cough*HSDPA*cough
- Anthracene, on 10/11/2007, -7/+13Transmission on the iPhone.
Probably not. Definitely could not fit Azureus in the memory. Barely fits in my laptop. - e2superman, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11EVDO Rev A on Sprint and Verizon are the fastest the in US.
- Waskonator, on 10/11/2007, -5/+110...
Actually, I'm just not going to buy it. Made ya click. - angryundead, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6And my speed is nil on my AT&T phone. The E / G networks have been down since yesterday. Really pissing me off.
- nickab, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11That's nearly the speed I get with my EVDO phone from Verizon when tethered to my computer. So, that'll be great if it holds to be true. Can't wait to dump Verizon today for the iPhone/AT&T. My parents have AT&T and way better reception than I do in Central Pennsylvania.
- Billions, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6The rest of the world is finding it quite "gripping!"
- awhiteflame, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6There is one being developed for OS X.
- bluegender, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11I've definately noticed some changes:

- johnpaul191, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5there was no reason to digg them down. in the US right now the EVDO is faster as well as available to more people. the problem with 3G is that it is unavailable outside of urban areas. it's kind of a non-issue to some people since EVDO is Verizon and Sprint, and 2G, 2.5G and 3G are used by AT&T.
Steve Jobs addressed this in the WSJ: http://www.macrumors.com/2007/06/28/wall-street-journal-qanda-with-steve-jobs/
WSJ: [Editor's contraction: Why did you choose EDGE over 3G?]
Mr. Jobs: [Paraphrased] Every AT&T Blackberry gets its mail over EDGE. EDGE is great for mail, and it works well for maps and a whole bunch of other stuff. Where you wish you had faster speed is…on a Web browser. It's good enough, but you wish it was a little faster. That's where sandwiching EDGE with Wi-Fi really makes sense because Wi-Fi is much faster than any 3G network.
When we looked at 3G, the chipsets were not low-enough power for what we were looking for. They were not integrated enough, so they took up too much physical space. We cared a lot about battery life and we cared a lot about physical size. Down the road, I'm sure some of those tradeoffs will become more favorable towards 3G but as of now we think we made a pretty good doggone decision. - Anthracene, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Did we really do that or did the upcoming AT&T customers? Please forgive me for sounding condescending.
- kennpeters, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5were you trying to be funny somehow with 'seize', or can you not properly spell 'cease'?
- locd32, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5That's funny, my phone can do that....the iphone isn't the only phone AT&T carries, try looking up the AT&T 8525 before you spout off stupid comments. This article is about the EDGE network NOT the iphone...
- zofobread, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4T-Mobile uses Cingular's (Now AT&T's) EDGE data network. So it should be affected as well.
- cplater, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I've been very happy with AT&T's Edge network for email, and limited web browsing. I totally understand the HSPDA has the potential to blow it out of the water, and that EVDO can do so today. Years ago I swore off CDMA and TDMA cell phones, which pretty much leaves me out of the EVDO party. I've been routinely getting better than 100kbit/s (reported from http://dslreports.com/mspeed ) and just now when I ran the test I got 189kbit/s -- not too shabby.
- e2superman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5um, 1xEVDO on CDMA (Verizon and Sprint) is greater than 10x faster. Even HSDPA on AT&T is greater than 10x faster.
- wbienek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Yep. Speeds are double! 220k in the middle of nowhere.. MILFORD MICHIGAN! 48381 four bars..
- Waskonator, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6...side note; I didn't think snarky was a word, because my Firefox browser told me it wasn't. I and i found this:.
SNARKY:
*A word that should be googled to find the definition as per direction from Dane Cook. It means short tempered or irritable.
"He was being very snarky with me. Yeah, snarky. Its a word, google it." -Dane Cook*
-so, kudos to you mdavis. -
