- machocheese34, on 10/30/2008, -2/+49hows that novel going?
- BillyB, on 10/29/2008, -2/+42I just caught myself browsing the map of WIFI spots in my city and the ones nearby and daydreaming about all the places I can now go surf the internet -- while surfing the internet.
I feel lame. - timusca, on 10/29/2008, -1/+36Does this mean we can only use the wifi on our iPhones or does it mean that we can connect using our laptops as long as we have a 10-digit iPhone number to type in?
- pilot3033, on 10/30/2008, -1/+30AT&T just sent me a text message informing me that I now have free wifi access to ATT hotspots.
Sweet. - 4phun, on 10/29/2008, -7/+32
This adds far more value to the $200 iPhone from AT&T than you get with the $148.88 T-Mobile GPhone.
There was far more value to begin with as AT&T's 3G is far more widespread than the tiny T-Mobile 3G network.
But WiFi is faster than 3G so it is great when you can leech of of f a Wifi hotspot.
T-Mobile got kicked out of StarBucks and soon when the contract expires T-Mobile access there will go away.
Plus you get free access at thousands of other AT&T locations with the iPhone. MacDonalds has AT&T and possibly some of those locations may open up too. - Iwantawii, on 10/30/2008, -10/+32"AT&T Finally Offering Free Wifi for iPhone Users" = subjective

come on, guys. - mrBitch, on 10/30/2008, -8/+22... got a nice litte story you're working on there?
Your big novel you've been working on for three years? Huh?
Got a, got a compelling protagonist? Yeah? Got a obstacle for him to overcome? Huh?
Got a story brewing there? Working on, working on that for quite some time? Huh?
Yeah, talking about that three years ago. Been working on that the whole time? Nice little narrative? Beginning, middle, and end?
Some friends become enemies, some enemies become friends?
At the end your main character is richer from the experience? - Dtopler, on 10/29/2008, -6/+19What about non-iPhone users that are paying $30 a month for the 3G plan? Will we be able to access WiFi too? And if not, why not?
- agaiziunas, on 10/30/2008, -2/+15Yah makes sense, if you're in a wifi spot it's cheaper for AT&T to let you use that Wifi for free to take the load off the crowded 3G network than invest in infrastructure.
- eldridgea, on 10/30/2008, -1/+14McDonalds
- Alias1431, on 10/30/2008, -0/+12Boy you sure are trying really hard to justify your purchase to the best of your ability.
- bot001220, on 10/30/2008, -0/+12You have to buy an iphone and sign a contract with AT&T ;p
- bot001220, on 10/30/2008, -1/+11They're saying "finally" because it was announced, then was taken back. Then was announced again, and taken back again.
- Zachari, on 10/30/2008, -7/+15It's ok, buddy. No one faults you for trying to justify your purchase. More power to you.
- mhemu, on 10/30/2008, -6/+13All you AT&T 3G iPhone users can thank T-Mobile and the G1 for this. Without free wifi on the G1, ATT would still be stingy bastards.
- mbolson1975, on 10/29/2008, -2/+9It is long overdue... AT&T needed to start sharing the love... It was good timing to just get the iPhone, too.
- lancedice, on 10/30/2008, -3/+10Internet for the iPhone is $80 a month? Damn. Mine is only $30, someone's getting jacked.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -3/+9You should kill yourself
- Cronikeys, on 10/30/2008, -2/+8They don't give you a username and password. Be honest, did you actually read anything?
- RetlawST, on 10/30/2008, -0/+6It's a good question.
As to why not, I suspect Apple has been putting AT&T to the fire concerning the reliability of their network. If AT&T didn't try to do something to appease Apple, there would probably be a legal battle concerning the terms of the contract and just the THOUGHT of losing the iPhone exclusive on their network sent them scrambling. - smacksaw, on 10/30/2008, -1/+6Be an hero.
- deadnoob, on 10/30/2008, -1/+6I don't think so, but I saw on Engadget (I think) that you can spoof Mobile Safari.
I also found this link. You can probably find a better one, this is just the first on I saw.
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/06/28/how-to-em ... - thinkdifferent, on 10/30/2008, -1/+6Given that your phone number wouldn't be on AT&T, I'd seriously doubt it.
- thephosphorbox, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5That's because we're capitalists. If there's money to be made on anything, we'll charge you for it. As soon as the technology catches up, we're going to implant tiny devices inside your mouth to monitor how much air you breathe, then send you a monthly bill.
- smacksaw, on 10/30/2008, -0/+5You forgot to mention what you usually order at Starbucks and how you order it. We need to know that information as well.
- kipmartin, on 10/30/2008, -3/+8$80 per month? what, are you on some super internet? who gets away with that price?
- dmcbride6, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4I have an attwifi account, separate from the iphone I also own.
Oddly enough, my attwifi account was locked two days ago (who knew they only allow 3 laptops to use the service in a given month - not at the same time...but 3 PERIOD) and if you try to use a fourth, your entire account gets locked and it takes "3-5 business days to reopen". Isn't that the stupidest thing you have ever heard?
Needless to say, I got a little excited yesterday when I got the att text msg concerning free wifi considering it was just a day after my wifi account was locked. Here’s what I found.
First, I tried the old trick of using the iPhone user agent on my macbook pro – this DID NOT work for me. Although previously, a simple change of the user agent would let me punch in my mobile number and browse, this time I wasn’t presented with the ‘right’ mobile wifi screen.
I also tried connecting to the wifi using my phone first, punching in the mobile number and manually typing in the address sent to me on the macbook pro. The web page displayed a could not find page type error…
Using the iPhone on the wireless is nice. That is, once you get connected, it is pretty nice. Getting connected though is a multiple step process though is, in my opinion, a pain in the ass. You have to…
Get on the attwifi wireless => visit the site => enter your mobile number => wait for a reply text msg => visit the site linked in the text msg => finally on the wireless. - RyomaNagare, on 10/30/2008, -2/+6My Gf just came back from visiting washington DC, what's wrong with your country, that WI-FI is not free in your airports, I mean, its the year 2008 its taken several years here in my small south american country, but at least I get free WIFI at malls, hotels, service-stations, and yes Airports too.
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4Since the first launch
- blackinthmiddle, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4FTA:
"- Enter your 10-digit mobile number and check the box to agree to the Acceptable Use Policy. Tap 'continue'
- You will receive a text message from AT&T with a secure link to the AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot. You will not be charged for the text message."
So since there's no number assigned to iPod touch users (it's not a phone, after all), it would appear not, although I'd never rule things out completely. - Chahrlie5, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4Your soul
- inactive, on 10/30/2008, -0/+4Be nice to your mom or she won't take you to Starbucks anymore.
- deslock, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3???
The tmobile G1 phone already had, from launch day, access to all Starbucks free wifi. Even though Starbucks has switched partners to ATT, they have a contract to continue to support tmobile customers for the next 5 years (minimum). The G1 even comes with a nice little app that will show you the nearest wifi starbucks (or otherwise) hotspot.
AT&T sent this offer out only BECAUSE they have been milking their iphone customers so bad and the G1 made them look like asses. - newstart, on 10/30/2008, -3/+6The CHANGE has already started coming!
- Diggnabbit, on 10/30/2008, -3/+6It's faster... duh.
- DrunkenSavior, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4I donno why you got dugg down, seemed like a legit question. When you pay for unlimited data in your iPhone plan, you are paying a monthly fee for unlimited access to the non-wifi networks, like Edge or 3G. You aren't paying by the kb, like most other carriers who provide cell phones that access the internet.
- jollybee34, on 10/30/2008, -4/+7whats the catch?
- smacksaw, on 10/30/2008, -1/+4Now now, let's not let semantics get in the way of critiquing fanboys.
- shadowfoxmi, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3On an unrelated note, can I buy an iPhone 3G without their $30 data plan, yet? I don't have at&t 3g coverage where I live and I refuse to pay 30 bucks for EDGE.
- StealthMonkey, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3Are the "Premier" hotspots free also? Airports is where free Wi-Fi would really be nice. I don't have time to sit around in Starbucks all day... but I am forced to sit around in airports all day sometimes.
- scootinger, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3why did he get dugg down? he has a point...yes the Tilt runs Windows Mobile, but at least its operating system isn't locked down and under the complete control of Apple.
- solidus636, on 10/30/2008, -0/+3If you've got Internet from ATT, you get free WIFI anywhere. Just log-in with the email address linked to your account and it should work.
- smacksaw, on 10/30/2008, -1/+3Have you met Karmakongen? You ought to help him out. He might buy you a coffee.
- arjie, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2"It has thousands of apps you can download?"
Dude, it runs Windows Mobile. Yes, it does have thousands of apps you can download, what kind of a question is that? Nearly every cellphone application in the world has a version for WM and Symbian. - DigDugDigger, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2Stop eating at McDonalds and you won't need to worry about losers.
- mrhahn, on 10/30/2008, -0/+2TheCloud and BT OpenZone hotspots. Although no T-Mobile, which I believe is what Starbucks uses.
- homercles337, on 10/30/2008, -1/+3Is this what is referred to as appeasing the idiots?
