- engelb15, on 06/13/2009, -5/+205I'd be happy if they just included SMS/MMS with the data plans
- linagee, on 06/13/2009, -1/+118Let me rephrase that for you:
I'd be happy if they just included 160 byte blocks of data with the data plans. - riks311, on 06/13/2009, -2/+86i don't care at all about the $30 data plan - it's the $20 unlimited texting that's ridiculous.
- gvoakes, on 06/13/2009, -8/+78Good, those greedy bastards.
- Ductapemaster, on 06/13/2009, -1/+64Text messages should be included with the data plans for no more than the plan costs already. $30 a month is plenty for unlimited "data". I mean the messages are sent on a channel that the phone already utilizes for sending data to the towers! It costs them nothing to throw the packets in between the stuff being sent to the tower. And I can't believe that they need to pay for text infrastructure. It's already there.
- frontaxle, on 06/12/2009, -7/+56It's not like you can use these things without data, but every carrier has data, SO let's see the prices drop. OKEE?
- smashingmonkey, on 06/13/2009, -2/+45This is really the only sticking point for me. It is insulting to the customer to pretend that SMS/MMS are something other than data. $30/month is nothing to sneeze at and an unlimited data plan should include all data.
- inkswamp, on 06/13/2009, -3/+45FTA: "All in all, AT&T must balance the growing number of iPhone users with the amount of traffic they use on the network."
Well, here's a crazy ***** idea. Build more network infrastructure. - djphilos, on 06/13/2009, -1/+301. Why does unlimited text cost half of the average phone bill?
2. Why isnt text considered data? It should be part of the unlimited data plan. - linagee, on 06/13/2009, -4/+32$10/mo data plan plz.
- tofslie, on 06/13/2009, -3/+31Agreed, I feel 30 bucks for data is fine..... if it included SMS/MMS.
- Lane, on 06/13/2009, -1/+25This will never happen so long as they have no competition. If Sprint has cheap data plans on the other hand we will see prices drop to stay competitive. The data plan being so retardedly expensive is the sole reason I don't have an Iphone though and I'm sure others are just like me.
- avnerlevit, on 06/13/2009, -0/+24The United States has one of the least competitive mobile markets in the world, all thanks in part to the lobbyists and FCC. Even in "third world countries" like India, you don't pay to RECEIVE(!) calls or sms messages. Less competition always equals less choice and utility to the consumers / economics 101.

"AT&T Isn't Going To Reduce iPhone Data Plans" - nepidae, on 06/13/2009, -2/+19Sorry but how is that an argument?
- Azriel7, on 06/13/2009, -1/+17$30 mandatory internet is the #1 reason I do not have one. No matter how much I try, I just cannot justify it. They can forget the tiered pricing plan idea, you already have a data cap at a measly 5 gigs which is a joke, there isn't much more you can shorten it down too. Internet minutes? hmmm, that could work if we have rollover minutes that carry over each month. However, it would have to be pretty cheap. However there are all sorts of problem with the g3 network that att has done nothing about except blame the customers for using the overpriced phones for the very thing they bought it for.
They say part of the price is because to lower the price of the phone and to support the network. Ok, well what if we want to pay full price for the phone, but have internet turned off except for wifi? I can use the phone and have all the functions of an apple touch in one item. I hope apple breaks their exclusivity deal and sell to other providers. Then we will see some real change. - rnawky, on 06/13/2009, -13/+29Isn't it $30 for unlimited data? I have a Blackberry and that's what I pay at least.
While I think $30 for unlimited data, plus another $20 for unlimited SMS is a bit excessive, I get the most out of it every month. I wouldn't mind a price cut but hey, I knew how much it cost before I bought my phone, so I don't have room to complain. - rockstar1o9, on 06/13/2009, -0/+15Supply.
and Demand.
as long as the demand for iphones continues to be there, what incentive do they have to change? they have zero competition. i'm hoping when at&t loses its iphone exclusivity contract, the cost will come down. - jason221, on 06/13/2009, -0/+14That costs money. Lots of it. AT&T doesn't want to spend money; they just want to steal yours.
- roguewriter, on 06/13/2009, -0/+13It isn't just AT&T's plans with the iPhone, it's all US cell providers' data plans. They're stupidly expensive, and I think due to exclusivity agreements between smartphone manufacturers and cell service providers, there's little competition to drive down data plans. Most americans do not like change, and it's hard to take an exclusive smartphone to a different carrier.
- rnawky, on 06/13/2009, -3/+15Well if the iPhone and the Blackberry data plans cost the same, why is it that "AT&T faces pressure to cut iPhone data costs?"
It seems as if the kids who work at Mc Donald's and deliver pizza can't afford to pay for their toy. - TheBlueVulcan, on 06/13/2009, -4/+15The iPod Touch says hi.
- Ravatar, on 06/13/2009, -1/+12The problem is that 200 messages cost NOTHING just like 120000 messages cost NOTHING, as they are piggybacking the cellular signal's fixed-length heartbeat packets.
- Braindead360, on 06/13/2009, -4/+14I don't mind the $30 a month data plan. Just make the ***** service work!
- spookyttws, on 06/13/2009, -0/+10That's why I wish Apple would stop this exclusive AT&T deal and branch out. Don't get me wrong, I'm with AT&T (formally with Cingular) and love my iPhone, but if it was offered thru other companies At&T would be forced to actually be competitive with pricing, not to mention actually include feature that other carriers have included standard since 1997.
- DankNugzPlz, on 06/13/2009, -1/+11The minute they start charging for MMS - a service I could get on a $5 pre-paid phone but somehow still don't have on my iPhone, is the minute I drop the iPhone altogether.
- slyzxx, on 06/13/2009, -2/+11I hope cause 30 bucks a month is ***** crazy and half the time i don't have 3G in Illinois.
- diargasm, on 06/13/2009, -1/+10The problem is that they tricked us customers. For $30 UNLIMITED data you would have expected to be able to use it for something like Sling, but even that has been blocked by At&T. They even cap the size of files to 10megs so that you can't even download podcasts with it. It's not really unlimited as they claim it to be.
- t0ny, on 06/13/2009, -0/+8Wifi? I have a iPod touch and just about every where I go has wifi. School, friend's houses, home, etc.
- kanabiis, on 06/13/2009, -1/+9@popfrogs2, reward for being loyal. ***** off, most of you iPhone ***** only became customers in the last 2 years, since the iPhone has been out. Ive been an AT&T customer for over 10 years, long enough that my bill changed from AT&T to Cinglular and back to AT&T. When I had to upgrade my Cingular 8125, a 600 dollar phone when it came out, I had to wait my full 2 year contract to upgrade to the tilt, and then another 18 months to upgrade to my Fuze.
You want to talk about loyalty after just owning a single ***** phone, give me a ***** break. Wait like the rest of us LOYAL customers who actually know how to read a contract, and understand the terms we signed to. I hope your iPhone blows up in your hand..... loyal customers because you paid 3 bills.... give me a break. - Azriel7, on 06/13/2009, -0/+8Yes, but its only recently that internet on the phone has caught on. However, with all things internet related, the bandwidth WILL be used. I am just thinking long term, I know hulu is working on an app that I am sure will be data intensive, and somewhere along the lines somebody somewhere will make a killer app that DL's a lot of info. I just fear att will get stuck with the idea that 5 gigs is enough for anything like the old joke “640K is enough for everybody.” and we saw how THAT turned out.
- Jrr6415sun, on 06/13/2009, -0/+8AT&T is just trying milk out all the profits from the iphone monopoly they have now before it inevitably goes to all carriers. I honestly don't think they have any pressure on them to cut down their prices. Yes their customers will complain but I doubt AT&T cares. The ones that complain were going to switch carriers when they can anyway even if they do lower the price now.
- sockpuppets, on 06/13/2009, -2/+9I might be bad at math but at least my sentences are coherent.
- inactive, on 06/13/2009, -1/+8uhh.....ok...
- CLShortFuse, on 06/13/2009, -1/+8$30 is the rate for data package for all smart phones. The issue is making the data package mandatory
- utnow, on 06/13/2009, -1/+8They aren't. Best I can recall you get some ridiculously insulting number of SMS's (50?) with your data plan but have to upgrade to 250,500 or unlimited... 5$ 10$ 20$ something like that.
- tgc1, on 06/13/2009, -0/+7How exactly, if anyone can explain, are text messages not included in a data plan? Text messages are DATA.
Also, why the ***** send text messages anyway if you have a data plan? Couldn't you use instant messaging or email? Something doesn't make sense here. And I think people are getting charged up their asses for it. - TyrannousDotNet, on 06/13/2009, -3/+10How about this ATT, switch the current iPhone 3g data plan to 10$ and offer a 30$ unlimited MMS and tethering data plan, and youve got a hard sell. almost a deal
- InitialDMP5, on 06/13/2009, -1/+7I think what bothers me the most is that I am FORCED to pay for the data package. When I had a blackberry, If I knew I wasn't going to be using a lot of data while on vacation or whatever, I would change my plan and remove the data. I can't do that on the iPhone. So there are months where I used a few KB of my data package and I feel like I am throwing away money.
Also, I have a corporate account and I am not allowed to apply my 20% discount to my bill because I have an iPhone. So for the people saying that iPhone owners need to stop complaining, you need to see that At&t treats the iPhone differently than other phones.
I really enjoy the iPhone but At&t really makes me reconsider staying with the phone and them once my contract is up in a few months. - diginess78, on 06/13/2009, -0/+6It should be mandated that phone companies use a certain percentage on laying out network capability.
- InitialDMP5, on 06/13/2009, -1/+7questions I ask myself everytime I get my bill.
Text messaging costs phone companies pennies every year and yet they are raping consumers by large amounts every month. Its free money for them. Only way to change it is to stop paying for the unlimited plans and reduce the amount of texts you send. - diargasm, on 06/13/2009, -0/+6I'm not really sure what your point has to do with what I said. And to your point, it shouldn't be any concern to AT&T what I use the internet on my phone for. If they advertise it as being unlimited, then it should be just that - unlimited.
- ArchAngel21x, on 06/13/2009, -3/+9For those of you complaining about Apple choosing ATT, remember that Apple chose Cingular and probably didn't know they were going to be taken over by ATT.
- mrBitch, on 06/13/2009, -0/+6@ nepidae, I understand but I would still like the power point presentation...
- Nothlit, on 06/13/2009, -0/+6I think the common argument here is that the $30 for data should include text messages and MMS. And tethering. But it does not.
- tonmil, on 06/13/2009, -0/+6It's the same infrastructure whether it's a phone call, SMS or Web browsing. It should be one fee for all three.
- ucbmckee, on 06/13/2009, -0/+6In the UK, I pay £45/mo (~$70) for my iPhone (unlimited data, 1200 minutes, etc.), but got the phone for free and only had to sign an 18mo contract. After the six month mark, you can even switch down to the £35/mo plan without penalty. Looking at AT&T's prices, you'd be paying at least $90/mo for a plan that's somewhat comparable (900min vs. 1200min) and still have to shell out for the phone. I dunno, but I think O2 is doing okay financially here. Maybe AT&T is just screwing you and all of their justifications are *****. That'd be shocking, I know.
- popfrogs2, on 06/13/2009, -1/+6The Blackberry data plan is inclusive, at least it was for me on Tmo. Unlimited means unlimited anything data related...unlimited surfing, emails, texting, mms (yes theirs actually works).
When I picked up an iPhone and saw they were charging big bucks for texting on AT&T I was puzzled. Since text messaging is built in to every phone, and it costs the carriers zero dollars regardless of how many messages anyone sends, why are they charging so much for it? The BB plan didn't.
Oh well, such is life with AT&T and Apple. That may be set to change next year though. AT&T has really been dragging its feet when it comes to their terrible 3g network upgrades and Apple is probably tired of getting a bad rap for it. - magamiako, on 06/13/2009, -0/+5Get the Ipod Touch. It's an iphone w/o the phone.
- diargasm, on 06/13/2009, -0/+5That's where the trickery comes in. If there was a clause in the fine print of their contract contradicting the title of the data plan, then they should have changed name of the data plan from unlimited to limited. And aren't you so righteous fighting on behalf of multi-billion dollar corporations? Maybe you should work for Fox News.
