- Giac, on 10/06/2009, -10/+121I still hate them
- TabControl, on 10/07/2009, -5/+91OMG really? I can now use the virtually non existent 3G network, bogged down by too many users to make data VOIP calls? ***** great.
- gankige, on 10/06/2009, -1/+57Well, one of several things happened here. Either the sacrifice of Google upon Apple's altar appeased the AT&T gods, AT&T and Apple don't want more crap from the FCC, or AT&T is desperate to give Apple a reason to maintain exclusivity in the US.
I can't wait to find out which! Things are getting interesting again. - bolshoibooze, on 10/06/2009, -4/+43I'll be much happier when we can get Google Voice apps back.
- 35USC101, on 10/06/2009, -1/+39Maybe AT&T can also reverse its discriminatory policy of crippling the Slingbox App to Wi-Fi only for the iPhone while allowing Blackberry Devices on the same network to access it over 3G.

- petenutz, on 10/07/2009, -0/+19That's right bitches! We The People license the air waves to YOU. So don't even try to tell us what we can and can't run on your 'dumb pipes'.
- astrodemoniac, on 10/07/2009, -1/+18You just KNOW they'll throttle down the traffic so that VoIP devs look bad (Skype) and then they can say "we told you so"
- cokewithlemon, on 10/06/2009, -2/+15Dislike them, but got their service for another 9 months, I'll take what I can get at this point.
- enantiodromia, on 10/07/2009, -1/+13Being that Google Voice is not a VOIP app, I don't think one influences the other.
- victorycig, on 10/07/2009, -1/+11Yeah, I can barely make a VoIP call on the Skype app over wifi as it is. VoIP on iPhone is not yet an "amazing" experience.
I hope ATT gets their act together and preforms some major upgrades or I'm leaving them when Apple's exclusivity contract is up. - Chirp08, on 10/07/2009, -0/+10We had the technology to do that 5 years ago, I honestly wish Google and Apple and Intel would team up and deploy a nationwide WiMax network and say ***** you to the phone companies. Between the iPhone and the Android phones they could make cell phones obsolete overnight. My fear is that unlike the pre-existing internet providers whoever does go nationwide with wireless is going to censor the ***** out of the internet.
- Jedakiah, on 10/07/2009, -0/+10In less than 5 years the only thing you will need from your cell provider is an internet connection. The rest will be free. Hello $40/mo for unlimited everything.
- m0ng00se68, on 10/07/2009, -0/+10Yeah, but a little less now than before.
When they let me use Google Voice through an app, I'll change my profile pic. - stuffradio, on 10/07/2009, -0/+7It's fine in Canada.
- Iwantawii, on 10/07/2009, -1/+7Getting closer, AT&T. We're also waiting for you to play catch up with 3G iPhone data tethering. It's not too late to save a few customers when Apple allows other carriers...
- PhillyMJS, on 10/07/2009, -3/+9Actually, AT&T was their second choice. Their first choice was Verizon, who turned them down because Verizon refused to give Apple total control of the device (i.e. no hideous red Verizon UI, no crippled phone features to drive people to use added-cost Verizon services, etc). So Apple went to AT&T, and then Verizon learned that people will switch to and put up with a ***** carrier to have an iPhone.
Fast-forward two years, and now when Steve Jobs says, "Jump," Verizon will ask, "How high?" They can't build out their 4G network fast enough to prepare for getting their hands on the iPhone as soon as AT&T exclusivity is up. - spazzcat, on 10/07/2009, -0/+6And I wish more people could get this already...
- inactive, on 10/07/2009, -1/+7Dream on. They can't subsidize phones with $40 a month. American cell services loooove subsidies.
- jwaycuilis, on 10/07/2009, -0/+6"they will register a place in forgotten history."
L O L. Have you ever taken an American History class?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT%26T_Corp.#Company_ ... - silverfox08, on 10/07/2009, -1/+6The worst carrier I ever dealt with was Verizon. I'm curious if even 90% of the people praying for an iPhone on Verizon's network have ever dealt with Verizon before? I still don't get text messages from half my friends on vz. Text messages just get lost in space on Verizon's network. IF they can't handle sms, how the hell are they going to deal w/ iPhone 3G goodness?
The service wasn't half the horror. Ever deal with Verizon's billing dept? We tried wrapping our cell bill and our home phone and internet into one bill. What a nightmare! We were double billed for months before we finally got them to cancel our accounts and refund us. Try calling verizon support for ANYTHING other than a simple question that their dumbest support staff in India can answer and you're in for a ride! They'll bounce you from department to department faster than you can say "give me AT&T back". - crashingechelon, on 10/07/2009, -0/+5What's next? AT&T changes their texting plan to include unlimited texting with the iPhone data plan?
- grnicon, on 10/07/2009, -3/+8I'll be glad when the AT&T exclusive contract is up just so all these anti-AT&T idiots see how ***** every single network becomes once thousands of data leeches flood the networks.
You know the reason AT&T has an exclusive contract with Apple? It's because Apple *always* maintains quality control. If there is one thing anyone should know about Apple, it's that they keep their grip on quality control.
Apple made a judgement call and decided AT&T was the only network that could make the iPhone actually work. Anyone that thinks results would have been better on any other network out there are delusional. - macslut, on 10/07/2009, -0/+5I've been using Skype on 3G and Edge on my jailbroken iPhone for some time now. Of course it doesn't always work well, but if you're in a good zone it works great, even on Edge. Plus it can help you save $$$ by choosing a lower minute plan.
This is good news, and I suspect that it will take some time for the masses to discover Skype on the iPhone and the reasons for using it. Hopefully AT&T can improve connectivity quickly to satisfied this demand...wait, "hopefully" isn't the right word here, is it?
Also, any chance of giving us tethering on the iPhone while your at it? - spoonchucks, on 10/07/2009, -0/+4Left my iPhone (and AT&T) for T-Mobile last month. Couldn't be happier.
- MacParrot, on 10/07/2009, -1/+5How did that "beat the iPod by throwing more features into its competitors" work out again?
I'm not saying the iPhone is all that and a bag of chips but more feature laden doesn't always beat what it is they're fighting against - grnicon, on 10/07/2009, -3/+7And what makes you think any other network out there will be able to handle the load?
You're assuming it's a one-way street for Apple and AT&T, where AT&T is the only one benefiting. But if the iPhone came out on a carrier that couldn't handle the vastly different data usage the phone brings, then Apple would have a huge PR problem. The iPhone would have been a dud then.
What makes the iPhone amazing is it actually ***** works. AT&T had no clue what they were getting in to by accepting the iPhone. It's the first phone people *actually* use the internet on. And I'm not talking just email. I had never touched those ***** so-called web browsers other phones had. They were entirely unusable. The iPhone? You have YouTube, Google Maps, and thousands of addon internet applications.
It's not a phone that has internet access. It's a handheld computer connected to the internet all the time. - liquisoft, on 10/07/2009, -2/+5Once the iPhone appears on another network, I'm outta here. Srsly.
- KissTheRing, on 10/07/2009, -0/+3Na raitchinson I'm pretty sure it was AT&T that blocked the app because of the free text messaging, it's just a guess, but I'd bet money on that guess.
- Zippo, on 10/07/2009, -0/+3Here's hoping this applies to other networks as well... and we see Skype calls over Rogers 3G... (and in light of current news, Bell and Telus too)
- grnicon, on 10/07/2009, -0/+3First choice? You don't know that. You have rumours. That's it. You don't know a single thing about meetings Apple held with potential wireless carriers, so stop the ***** already. It should be obvious to anyone that knows a single thing about business that Apple talked to every major wireless carrier at the time. No surprise there.
The only thing you, and everyone else knows (as I mentioned previously), is that Apple maintains quality control over their device. Cingular offered that to them.
As far as "***** carrier" goes... I think it's rather amusing that Verizon is a Baby Bell. No matter where you go, AT&T is there. Waiting for you. Must be a tough pill to swallow for the fanboy crowd. - craftyguy, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2There's still something fishy about this...
- HigherLogic, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2Jailbreak and download a 3G unrestrictor. Can run any app that normally won't work on 3G/Edge.
- jud420, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2"It is "exclusive" rights instead of exclusive rights."
You sense no make. - ajsmth, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2***** AT&T
- 1King, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2Man if only we could get it in Canada
- Snoogs, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2you missed the memo where everyone is supposed to be badmouthing their carrier...
- Bobski, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2Just because they lubed the shaft making it a little less painful, you're still getting it in the end.
- inactive, on 10/07/2009, -0/+2I would think the FCC probably told them "make this stupid go away now or we will continue and rule very badly against you."
But either way you look at it, whats the point of being able to make VOIP calls on a network with little to no signal? - Pr0phet, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1Their network is so crap that all they really need to do is sit back and watch. No throttling necessary.
- igeoffi, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1With a global plan why would they pick Verizon which uses CDMA? Much better for them to go with a GSM carrier (Cingular) so they only have to work with one hardware setup and be able to sell it globally. I'm guessing they didn't go with T-Mobile because T-Mobile doesn't use all the same GSM bands as other carriers in the rest of the world.
The iPhone isn't going to be 4G capable just because Verizon starts putting up a 4G network. It still needs a fallback network during the transition. AT&T's fallback from 4G will be 3G and Verizon's will be CDMA. - digjam, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1I wonder why pcworld still has its website on 800x600 ??
- Sethwm2, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1It takes FOREVER for my friend with Verizon to get texts from any carrier EVEN Verizon itself... At least AT&T has the texts down pretty instantaneously
- Arsi, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1*investigates*
ohhh sick and Telus too in November. Goodbye Samsung Omnia! - jrm125, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1I can't even make normal calls on their 3G network without drops.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1Google Voice is free, but that's beside the point. I have a skype subscription and number from back when I was using it for my house phone.
Also I honestly doubt that their rates are cheaper than Skype. I got a year or something of unlimited calling across the US for $30 for a year for service and $6 for an incoming number with voicemail whereas Vonage is nearly $20 a month. - forcedfx, on 10/09/2009, -0/+1Whoops. ***** AT&T!
- Arsi, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1Rogers
- RedBear, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1Actually, Bell now from what I've read
