- Eminemdrdre00, on 07/01/2008, -6/+302The text messaging rumors were true. They are no longer included. You've gotta pay for how many you want now. That's *****, especially with the monthly bill already $10 more! I'snt SMS just data anyway?
- nilsalb, on 07/01/2008, -16/+306Still too expensive for me...
- nbeighley, on 07/01/2008, -11/+243Well will you look at that; AT&T only had to wait a year before they found the opportunity to ***** us over!
- nardo510, on 07/01/2008, -4/+194What a ***** rip off.
- habu, on 07/01/2008, -8/+144The more I see about the new iPhone price plan the less I want an new iPhone. So it is $10 more a month for the unlimited 3G data plan, that I can't use because we only have Edge in our area and now no text messages included. So in order to get the plan to be the same as before it is now $15 a month more. I am not seeing a compelling reason to justify $15/month for GPS. Might be time to pick up a used iPhone 16GB and go with that, if the old plans are still available for it.
- fr0ng, on 07/01/2008, -4/+129Wow, until now I was 100% sure about getting a 3G iPhone the day they came out..but after seeing this, I don't know anymore. :(
- KMartSheriff, on 07/01/2008, -1/+98Seriously, there is no reason for that *****. I don't care if it is only $5 a month for 200 texts, that's *****. $5 should be unlimited. They're just texts.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/01/2008, -10/+96I don't know how ANYONE could justify spending over $1000 a year just to get service for a PHONE.
- inactive, on 07/01/2008, -7/+90Why do I have to pay $10 more a month, AND extra for text messages, even though there isn't even 3G coverage in my area (So I'll be stuck on EDGE)? I'm calling Apple... supposedly they are keeping a tally of complaints.
- austenw, on 07/01/2008, -2/+71I don't want an iPhone that bad.
- kuwan, on 07/01/2008, -1/+70Text messaging in my opinion is one of the biggest frauds in the Telecom industry. How they can get away with charging more for something that uses less data and network resources than any other service they provide is beyond me. I wish I were a lawyer and could bring a class-action lawsuit against the entire industry. I'm not sure what I'd sue them over - if only 'your pricing sucks' were something that was actionable.
Perhaps a case could be made regarding collusion of all the cell carriers to keep SMS rates high? Competition should bring costs down, not keep them high, especially for something that has very little actual cost associated with it. Luckily I hardly ever text anyone, certainly not enough to justify a $5/month 200 message plan. - gabe37, on 07/01/2008, -7/+74***** this. Seriously. ***** this.
- viditbhargava, on 07/01/2008, -24/+88whats the ***** difference between normal pda plans from at&t and this??? everything is the same then why call it "iphone pricing plans"???
- sint4x, on 07/01/2008, -10/+70I hate Rogers.
- virtualball, on 07/01/2008, -5/+65$10 more a month AND no texting included? What would happen if I just pop my iPhne 1's SIM into a new one? Would it just use the same plan or is there really a difference between EDGE data and 3G data or is that an excuse that AT&T uses to charge us more?
This is lame, AT&T, this is real lame. - fluidfoundation, on 07/01/2008, -5/+62I'm calling shenanigans on this one.
- Amazetbm, on 07/01/2008, -6/+62Geez, AT&T really knows how to cripple a decent product. Patiently waiting on Android.
- inactive, on 07/01/2008, -4/+57You too can fund the government's wire tapping!
- pulpjedi, on 07/01/2008, -2/+53$30 data? Hhrmmmmm... okay..... +$5 for SMS? ***** *****.
I think I'll be happy with my iPhone 2G. - inactive, on 07/01/2008, -1/+49you forgot to factor in the one-time $18 *transition* fee
- kraftj, on 07/01/2008, -0/+46The real iPhone Killer: AT&T.
- MattBot5000, on 07/01/2008, -2/+45There's always money in the banana stand nik-nik
- mrhaines, on 07/01/2008, -9/+51How much are you willing to pay for your status symbol?
- bpapa, on 07/01/2008, -4/+46I really don't want to bother shelling out the extra for SMS, but I should b/c so many people use it. I just wish everybody had an iPhone, then we could all email each other and kill the absurd SMS technology once and for all.
- synned, on 07/01/2008, -4/+42Quick, petition to Steve Jobs!
- freshyill, on 07/01/2008, -2/+39Because it was unclear. The iPhone previously had a different pricing model, and they never clarified if everything would now be in line with the prices for other 3G devices. Also, until now, nobody knew what a contract-free iPhone would cost. Now we know, and that's the real news here.
- freshyill, on 07/01/2008, -0/+36I think you're right. It's pretty ridiculous that AT&T and other carriers justify incredibly jacked up data rates for MMS and SMS because it's some kind of "special" data.
The only problem is that while email is fine between more advanced devices, if I want to send a picture, 99% of the people I know wouldn't see it until they get home and check their email.
What's even ***** is what you have to deal with if someone sends a picture message to your iPhone. You get a text message from AT&T telling you to go to viewmymessage.com where you have to put in a long message id and password (lots of fun when you can't copy and paste).
I think SMS and MMS need to go the way of the dodo, but Apple's not giving us a very easy transition. - iChopPryde, on 07/01/2008, -2/+36***** ROGERS!!!
- victimofkratina, on 07/01/2008, -3/+35***** THING SUCKS!!!!
- iChopPryde, on 07/01/2008, -7/+37I want to be cool ^_^
- freshyill, on 07/01/2008, -1/+30Did you even read his comment? I guess not, because he said he only has Edge in his area.
- arch3r, on 07/01/2008, -7/+34Apple cool tax.
- adambadam, on 07/01/2008, -1/+28How do you plan on walking out with a new iPhone 3G that has not been activated?
- artfuldodga, on 07/01/2008, -1/+27Question, why are we letting our devices be locked down? Its a phone, shouldn't we be able to use it and its capabilities on any network we want, things are going in the wrong direction... oh and I love the price jump!
- snotrokit, on 07/01/2008, -0/+26They broke it out because people use SMS and sms messages, and are willing to pay for them. It is just data, and a very small amount of data (SMS). They are just gouging people for it because they can.
Supply and demand don't ya know. - inactive, on 07/01/2008, -0/+26Just wait till september when the numbers come in and they realise they gotta either drop the price buy without contract to 399/499 or the monthly plans come with sms included for free. There is now ***** way anyone in their right minds will spend $100+ for a monthly plan. That is just insane.
- super_spyder, on 07/01/2008, -0/+25well how are they going to pay for all the paperclips to pop your sim out of your old iphone into the new one
- pakman221, on 07/01/2008, -0/+25they need to lower the prices down a little bit.
- fluidfoundation, on 07/01/2008, -2/+26No, I'm saying I agree with you. This is some AT&T & Apple shenanigans.
- BossKey, on 07/01/2008, -9/+32It's just a phone?
- MattFromSeattle, on 07/01/2008, -0/+22Glad I got my unlocked iPhone this past week before this news came out, I got it for a steal. This is going to start a whole new wave of people unlocking the original iPhones and jumping to different carriers. I love using it on T-Mobile, I've had no complaints thus far and all my messages and browsing is covered under my unlimited data plan - way better priced than The Empire's plans. I'd think it'd be worth paying the cancellation fee and unlocking your phone to go to a better plan.
- Eminemdrdre00, on 07/01/2008, -0/+21I wish :( But Engadget got all this info from ATT's press release
http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=4800&cdvn=ne ... - BossKey, on 07/01/2008, -0/+21Because of the Network Effect.
The only thing more powerful than how I want to communicate, is how everyone I am connected to wants to communicate. People send me text messages, and not everyone I communicate with has usable email on their phone. So I end up sending and receiving text messages even if I don't particularly want to.
Sure, you can run around and demand that everyone use a certain protocol or upgrade their devices to something more expensive, but you know what, that doesn't always work with business clients, or that hottie you just started dating. - KennMac, on 07/01/2008, -4/+25I got an awesome sundae from Dairy Queen last night... but for some reason, no one gives a *****.
- NoelEiffe, on 07/01/2008, -1/+21$129 for unlimited PLUS $45 for business services PLUS $20 for unlimited text = holy jeez. The US needs a ruinediphone site...
- mywhitenoise, on 07/01/2008, -3/+21That's what you're paying for. Take out the phone feature, and you have an iPod Touch that doesn't have a monthly fee.
