ATTENTION: Quicksilver Needs Your Help
theappleblog.com — Please digg this up to help Quicksilver gain the developer support it needs to stay alive! Alcor has doomed it to a "long slow death," help see that this doesn't happen!

- vault, on 12/08/2007, -20/+7It's a shame about QS, but I switched to Launchbar with Leopard. :-/
It's come a long way, even if it doesn't have QS's eyecandy/pretty bezel. I actually prefer the whole search template functionality.- MadOtaku, on 12/08/2007, -9/+15I've been a quicksilver fan since about late '04 . But Leopard's spotlight was good enough to make me give up QS.
- kris33, on 12/08/2007, -17/+1Leopard is not a search tool
- digitalpencil, on 12/08/2007, -0/+17Leopard isn't, spotlight, however is!
- kris33, on 12/09/2007, -5/+3Whoops. Guess I should have checked what I wrote before I submitted it. Meant QS ofc. :)
- digitalpencil, on 12/08/2007, -0/+17Leopard isn't, spotlight, however is!
- kris33, on 12/08/2007, -17/+1Leopard is not a search tool
- Tippis, on 12/08/2007, -2/+24If all you're using QS for is the search and launch, then maybe.
If you've ever gotten into everything else QS does, Spotlight still looks completely impotent by comparison.- manitoba98xp, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4Exactly. I click on a file, hit a short cut, and a few more keys, and I've sent it via email to somebody.
- brendon2020, on 12/10/2007, -0/+1I agree, the web searches, switching apps, itunes, the list goes on and on. I'm hoping going open source we'll see improvements to stability.
- unreg, on 12/08/2007, -3/+0Voodoo !!!
- phogasmic, on 12/09/2007, -0/+11I use Spotlight to open Quicksilver after it crashes.
- MadOtaku, on 12/08/2007, -9/+15I've been a quicksilver fan since about late '04 . But Leopard's spotlight was good enough to make me give up QS.

- DiggLive, on 12/08/2007, -75/+6This is what happens when you give software away for free. Take note Linux users.
- Beatmiser, on 12/08/2007, -40/+3Couldn't agree more. The lack of warranty/accountability will screw over the open source user in real business environments.
- muniak, on 12/08/2007, -2/+8Except that with some you can pay for support(or you know do a little work and look on the forums for some). Like Ubuntu for instance?!
- ickusslime, on 12/08/2007, -16/+7Ubuntu sucks. But your point holds true.
If its open source anyone can support it...- muniak, on 12/08/2007, -7/+4Stating how bad Ubuntu is completely irrelevant. You know you're just going to get burried by the linux noobs(omg compiz sew prety).
- ickusslime, on 12/08/2007, -16/+7Ubuntu sucks. But your point holds true.
- dwbell, on 12/08/2007, -0/+11If a buisness wants to use FLOSS with a warranty/accountability they can purchase warranty and support from many vendors. Red Hat , Novell , Canotical, Linspire etc.
It seems to me that many companies are doing just fine with Open Source. IBM Google and Paypal come to mind immediatly. - Richggs, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3Dont you just love it when people comment on stuff they know nothing about...
- Beatmiser, on 12/09/2007, -4/+2That's funny because I am a Sysadmin for a Mortgage bank... I have yet to see an open source tool that will support on any level a single style of item my end users need to do their job.
- pak314, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3You mean the "screw over the customer" feature?
- riomx, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Could you be any more vague? I've always been able to find open-source applications or operating systems that do more than anything a user needs. Some of the most powerful sites on the Web are powered by open-source technologies and tools. Servers run rock-solid and stable on FreeBSD, many major and robust sites on the web use a combination of PHP/MySQL, Ruby on Rails or otherwise, and a multitude of heavy-use media sites employ sophisticated content management systems such as Wordpress and Drupal. In fact, I work for a large media company that is getting set to drop a proprietary CMS provider and launch no less than 9 Drupal sites in the near future, and has gathered a highly efficient development staff that is familiar and experienced with open-source applications. Also, we already run multiple Wordpress sites. If a large company can find open applications to provide services to their end users, and you can't, you're either arrogant and enjoy making your employer needlessly spend money on custom applications, or just being lazy and not looking hard enough.

- voyvf, on 12/08/2007, -3/+26Yeah, I see that Linux has died within a few years of being released open source. Yup, how dead it is.
/sarcasm - dwbell, on 12/08/2007, -1/+17No this is what happens when you give software away for free and don't let others contribute. The only dev is bound to burn out. Now that QS is OSS it is going to grow and improve faster than ever.
- TheRealToma, on 12/09/2007, -1/+7I took a look at your other comments on digg. You seem like a real jerk. Blocked.
- mvent2, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2Yup, Linux is so dead that people switch over to it from Windows every day.
I have sympathy over you for being forced to use Windows all the time. Unfortunately Windows is closed source so the only way to make it seem non-***** is by trying to attack Linux...uh right? - boris92, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2Wow DiggLive is a total douche, get off the nets you troll

- XFi6, on 12/08/2007, -35/+5Huh? QuikSilver??
- sclifford, on 12/08/2007, -1/+30The fact that it's OSS now will keep it in the mix. I absolutely love QuickSilver and use it primarily as an application launcher, though it has tons of utility beyond that.
- dougmwpsu, on 12/08/2007, -1/+12I don't really understand what all the doom and gloom is about with this blog wine. since QS is now open source as of November, there's no reason that an app with a strong user base won't continue to be independently developed. infact, Alcor letting the app go is probably the best thing that could have happened; it's only a shame he didn't do it sooner.
- akatsuki, on 12/08/2007, -0/+9Basically the main developer is backing off of it and some people have picked it up, but many apps die at this stage because of lack of long term commitment. So yes, it is something to worry about, especially for such a beloved app. Sadly sometimes open source ends up being the kiss of death, whereas if he charged for it, he would be able to justify the time spent on it and perhaps devote working time to it.
- Audacitor, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2QuickSilver'll survive this. It's just too valuable an app, with too loyal an userbase to be lost. I mean hell, the closest thing to development I've ever done is some basic AppleScripting, but I'm already working on learning Objective C to bring this thing back.
Got no idea where to begin though...

- jeranuon, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3I practically had it replacing 75% of my overall GUI interactions... It broke my heart every single time it crashed, though. I reckon it will take a tremendous effort just to make it really stable.

Shows my mac-savvy-ness- mrjit, on 12/08/2007, -1/+18Thats Quiksilver
- BHSPitMonkey, on 12/09/2007, -1/+1My first impression as well; Interestingly enough, it's the top Google result for the term "quicksilver".
- richardiscool, on 12/08/2007, -20/+2What use does Quicksilver have now there's Spotlight?
- leprix, on 12/08/2007, -0/+8"now" there's spotlight? been around for a while...
- zwei, on 12/08/2007, -2/+4If I use spotlight to search for my Apps it makes my external HD spin up ....not something I want to happen.
- thenumber8, on 12/08/2007, -0/+8In Leopard they added quick-launching capabilities to Spotlight (start typing an app and then press return as opposed to having to tab down to launch the app, and apps appear faster in the Spotlight search now) however, Spotlight still does not have near the system-wide usability that Quicksilver has. Quicksilver has become much much more than an application launcher. Admittedly there is a slight learning curve, but it is still an application that many of us survive on and use daily for everything from launching apps, moving files, using the Shelf, even writing emails and changing Facebook status (google moodswing).
- Tippis, on 12/08/2007, -0/+10Plugins

In- and output stream processing

The search/launch part of QS is just a minuscule part of the range of things it can do. - Audacitor, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1With QS I can resize and apply filters to multiple images and email them multiple people in matter seconds.
- skyshock1, on 12/08/2007, -10/+53I REALLY wish Apple would pick up development of QS and use it instead of the launcher. The laucher is the crappiest UI component of OSX and basically just gets in the way. It robs screen space, is nowhere NEAR as powerful as QS, and uses pointless animations to eat system resources.
I have mine auto-hidden, but I really wish I could kill it off entirely.- Macskeeball, on 12/08/2007, -1/+57I think you mean to call it the Dock. When you said "the Launcher," you took me back one decade to System 7.5.
- Audacitor, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2I liked the Launcher. It had those nice big square buttons...
/major nostalgia - victorycig, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2I just booted up my old PowerPC (66 mHz with a 3rd party G3 upgrade). It was so strange and exciting to see old UI, icons and sticky notes.
- Audacitor, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2I liked the Launcher. It had those nice big square buttons...
- DOGPARTY, on 12/08/2007, -1/+26yeah QS would be so easy for my dad to pick up.......
- directive0, on 12/08/2007, -4/+12No matter what you call it, he's right. The dock has long since been dead to me after using QS. Infact, on one of the older machines in my office the finder refused to boot for a couple months. Usually this would be a major problem, but the computer is still fully functional thanks to QS! Apple: Buy this guy out and use this software, its amazingly powerful!
- MaxPayne3476, on 12/08/2007, -6/+4There are 4 icons on my dock - Finder, Firefox, Entorouge and the Bin
crtl+X does it ALL for me. I love QS with a passion like hot sex. Apple really should pick this up as included application!- Macskeeball, on 12/08/2007, -3/+6For future reference, on the Mac it's called the Trash, not Recycle Bin.
As far as Apple bundling QuickSilver, as a power user I use it all the time, but it has a steep initial learning curve. I had to do a lot of reading and video watching to really "get it" and start using it effectively. As fantastic a tool as it may be, I don't think it's beginner friendly enough for Apple to want to bundle it as a prominent part of the UI.
- Macskeeball, on 12/08/2007, -3/+6For future reference, on the Mac it's called the Trash, not Recycle Bin.
- noonjab, on 12/08/2007, -0/+10If you really don't ever use the dock then just remove everything but Finder, Quicksilver, and Trash from it. Make the dock as small as possible, set it to auto-hide, and turn off magnification and other animations. You'll never see it again.
I prefer typing to mousing and almost never use my dock anymore since I installed Quicksilver. You're out of your mind though if you think the average user is interested in hitting some key combination and typing the name of the app they want, rather than just pointing to an icon and clicking. - SoundScape, on 12/09/2007, -5/+1My prediction: In a few days time Apple announces the purchase/takeover of Quicksilver. It will be a free download from Apple.com and will continue to be developed by Apple, but will be customizable to anyone who wants to develop their own extensions.
- crazybrit, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1lol sure.
- Macskeeball, on 12/08/2007, -1/+57I think you mean to call it the Dock. When you said "the Launcher," you took me back one decade to System 7.5.
- rootadmen, on 12/08/2007, -1/+31I guess I'm just going to have to crack open my Obj-C once again
I'll never let QS die- vwgtiturbo, on 12/08/2007, -1/+6And I am so glad to hear someone say it... I can't program, and I don't have the memory to learn how, so it is great seeing those that have the ability stepping up for the good of all!
- InuX, on 12/08/2007, -7/+1You don't need money to learn. All you need is time, and online resources to help you.
- Audacitor, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2He said memory. I do have the memory to learn Obj-C, but I don't know where to begin. I've never done anything fancier than writing an AppleScript. So if, anyone wants to, you know, give me a prod in the right direction...

- D3koy, on 12/08/2007, -22/+2A chance for Windows fanboys to kill a Mac app by doing nothing? amazing
- maexus, on 12/08/2007, -0/+8This... has to be the stupidest comment I've read on Digg today.
- ghall, on 12/08/2007, -11/+3While I gave it up for Google Desktop, QuickSilver is still one of the greatest $0.00 I've ever spent.
- Rolamoto, on 12/08/2007, -7/+3Google Desktop uses quicksilver.
- zwei, on 12/08/2007, -11/+1The ideal thing I would like to see happen is for them to strip off a lot of the excess stuff and make a lite version. One that simply launches apps and set key commands for triggers. That is my dream version of QS. That should be very easy to make stable.
- rootadmen, on 12/08/2007, -0/+9That goes completely against to point of QS.
use launchy or google desktop

- thewfirestarter, on 12/08/2007, -1/+3Digging stories is the prayer of the 21st century.
Doing nothing while still thinking you're helping. - frazw, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1While I couldn't give a Rat's ass about quicksilver not knowing what exactly it is (but interested enough to read the article and comments to find out),
digging something like this is far more likely to help than digging up something on poverty or whatever. Why? Because they are appealing for devs to help the project. Who reads digg? Amongst others programmers. So by digging the story and making it popular you increase the chances of one of these guys seeing it who might then start contributing. This is more like passing on information than faux action.
Most other circumstances though I totally agree digging about something that actually does require your action is fairly pointless.

- directive0, on 12/08/2007, -2/+5The zealots might dig you down, but I would gladly use a copy of QS on my windows boxes at home and at work. I've hit CTL-Enter many a time thinking it would bring up my trusty bezel with no results!
- thewfirestarter, on 12/08/2007, -3/+5Dugg it down for ignorance. QS is written entirely in objective-c, makes heavy use of Apple specific OS features, including the graphics layer, applescripting and OS design.
A Quicksilver for windows could be made, but the only thing it would share with the Mac version would be the name. They'd have to start from scratch with the code.- frazw, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3How is it ignorance to express a desire?
- thewfirestarter, on 12/09/2007, -0/+0"Only if they promise" is the part that got me. Basically implying that it only deserves to be helped if they go out of their way to cater to Windows also.
DirectX needs your help! (not that it does). Mac users: Only if you promise to port to Mac! It's the same thing, DirectX is so tightly integrated into Windows, it would be impossible to just "make a Mac version".
- thewfirestarter, on 12/08/2007, -3/+5Dugg it down for ignorance. QS is written entirely in objective-c, makes heavy use of Apple specific OS features, including the graphics layer, applescripting and OS design.
- vault, on 12/08/2007, -2/+2There is a Windows equivalent for some of the functionality.
http://colibri.leetspeak.org/ - BRODEL, on 12/08/2007, -1/+2Hmm... I'll have to look into colibri.. I've been using launchy for a while and like it as something close to quicksilver for windows..

- ocellnuri, on 12/08/2007, -2/+7I'd love to see Apple pull a Coverflow, and pull the plugin system and added functionality of Quicksilver into Spotlight, after writing a check.
- maexus, on 12/08/2007, -2/+1... Or kill spotlight and integrate QS in OSX
- thewfirestarter, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4Spotlight is useful, and it has a different purpose than QS.
- MaxPayne3476, on 12/08/2007, -5/+3what randomly appearing at the most inopportune times?
- thewfirestarter, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4Spotlight is useful, and it has a different purpose than QS.
- DOGPARTY, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2quicksilver is too much of a power user thing, regular people woul be baffled
- breached, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1...yet Apple allows the Terminal application for my mom to stumble upon? I think Apple should integrate QS. Although back to ocellnuri's comment, no need for them to write a check to an open source project. Plus Nicholas Jitkoff works at Google now, I'm sure he is doing okay in the cash flow department.
- scotsman, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1check is spelt cheque.
- logicbus, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1Not in the US!
- maexus, on 12/08/2007, -2/+1... Or kill spotlight and integrate QS in OSX
- MacDaddyMac530, on 12/08/2007, -9/+7I dono I used quicksilver on 10.4 but got rid of it when I got 10.5 because it would leave an icon in the dock. Spotlight is just as quick as QS now in 10.5 so I just use that and use the same key board shortcut I had for QS.
- thenumber8, on 12/08/2007, -0/+6the newest build of quicksilver no longer leaves an icon in the dock, though some parts of it still dont work just right (Shelf and Clipboard are kinda buggy) but it is definitely usable and more complete than Spotlight
- maexus, on 12/08/2007, -0/+5Spotlight is used for search. QS is much more than just a launcher or a search. If that's what you use it for, by all means continue to use spotlight.
- MaxPayne3476, on 12/08/2007, -0/+3Right click on the icon and go into the preferences. Tell it to GTFO out of your dock and into your menu bar! Then tell it to load on startup. Viola, you'll never even know it's there until you need it!
- phogasmic, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2Spotlight's usefulness has increased dramatically in Leopord, no doubt about that. However I still use Quicksilver extensively, even to conduct Spotlight searches. Quicksilver excels at doing stuff, like running scripts, launching Apps, etc. Spotlight excels at searching for files. Both work wonderfully together.
- Hagablog, on 12/08/2007, -1/+4I want to learn to write Objective-C now just so I can do my bit...QS is great (Abracadabra is a must-have if you don't already use it) QS is one of the best things on my Mac (besides Garageband).
- davidrossiii, on 12/08/2007, -0/+1I agree, Abracadabra is a lifesaver.

- defylogik, on 12/08/2007, -0/+8this is one mac program i use everyday. i would PAY for it. crazy i know!
- thetin, on 12/08/2007, -9/+2Wake up America! QuickSilver is Ron Paul! If the iPhone wins the next election and the Ron Paul becomes the Hilary killer then QuickSilver shall live for ever!
- SaladCactusKing, on 12/08/2007, -8/+1Snowboarding
- 10GunSalute, on 12/08/2007, -7/+2As much as I loathe Macs at times, this looks like some interesting software and it's too bad it's not going anywhere
- GunDownCCL, on 12/08/2007, -3/+3Dugg, on possibility that you use linux, and for respect of good software.
- ianarcher, on 12/08/2007, -6/+1To be honest, I don't think QS really needs that much support. It's great as a simple, application launcher. I think any new development really only stands to add features that aren't really that useful. As long as we have someone to compile it for each new version, I don't think it really needs improvement.
- davidrossiii, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1QS is SOOO much more than just an app launcher. If you think that's all it is, then you need to do some more research.

- Xuis, on 12/08/2007, -1/+8Quicksilver is probably the most influential program that I have ever used on any of my computers, it NEEDS to stay alive because it can produce so much more innovation in the computing world as a whole. I hope never to see the dream of it's developers die.
- bingobongony, on 12/08/2007, -5/+2Do you hear yourself some times?
- mozzep, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3you must grant that it is, at the very least, revolutionary if you've used it to it's full capabilities. I too doubt it being the "most influential," that was likely just carelessness on the part of the parent.
- dreamersrevenge, on 12/08/2007, -13/+1Help! Quicksilver is RETARDED!
- manitoba98xp, on 12/08/2007, -1/+3Honestly, I know this seems rather extreme, but if he hadn't open-sourced it, he could easily have charged $10 for it, and half the Mac fanbase would have paid it without hesitation. Heck, even accepting donations would have yielded quite a bit. Hopefully the future developers help keep QS an application of such high caliber as it is today.
- bingobongony, on 12/08/2007, -7/+3I LOVED that Kevin Bacon bicycle messenger movie!
- shlos, on 12/08/2007, -8/+2what is quicksilver?

- Wuffles, on 12/08/2007, -3/+9Who the hell is digging this guy down? He's asking a genuine question! I have no idea what Quicksilver is either. And it doesn't exactly explain what it is in the article either.
- GreenAlien, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3Here is the wiki entry describing what QuickSilver does.

For anybody on Windows, also check out Launchy. It's not as powerful but it does the core job of launching software just as well. I'd never use Windows without it.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/launchy/- DOGPARTY, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1launchy is rubbish, hardly works at all
Colibri is ok as a launcher
however both have more in common with Launchbar than they do with Quicksilver

- knuvue, on 12/08/2007, -1/+1So far with Leopard I've been able to use the built in spotlight instead of Quicksilver which I used with 10.4. I only used QS to launch apps or find things though.
- FyberOptic, on 12/09/2007, -7/+2Apple fans jump all over everything new that the company puts out, so if QS were as great as people try to make it sound, more folks would be using it. That, or there simply aren't enough developers for the Mac for anyone to care. Or perhaps both reasons!
- dazmax, on 12/09/2007, -0/+2It's not developed by Apple. Many people use it, but it's free, so that doesn't mean it will keep being developed.

- phogasmic, on 12/09/2007, -1/+4He should charge for it, I'd pay in a heartbeat. I can't work without it. For me, it is the perfect mix of GUI and Command line working.
- Frostman3D, on 12/09/2007, -8/+2I don't know what the ***** quicksilver is, and don't really care, but I dugg it because you seemed sad that your little thingy was going the way of the dodo, so I wanted to help.

- randomd, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1I would gladly pay for this app...I use it constantly, as it has proven very useful and integrated so easily into my workflow...it would be very upsetting to lose support/development for this app...
- obxjdt, on 12/09/2007, -5/+2WTF?? When I think Quicksilver I think of surfing

- B3nno, on 12/09/2007, -1/+2Is there anything like this available for Windows?
- rexamafex, on 12/09/2007, -0/+1read my comment right above yours.....
- monikerd, on 12/09/2007, -4/+1perhaps they shouldn't have marketed it as flash killer.
I'm not going to develop for the technology which you can almost bet your ass on, will work just that little bit better in IE vs open browsers. If i was m$ i would do the same. Hence I use what power i have, and not use the format. Not that adobe has such a good track record. But still i'm counting on the fact that adobe has more to gain from crossplatformness than m$- yjsoon, on 12/09/2007, -0/+3i thought you were mistakenly referring to silverlight, then i read the rest of your comment and my brain exploded from confusion.
