- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -34/+220The guy who submitted this article clearly had an erection, what with the exclamations and capital letters and all that. I can see him now, sitting behind his white Apple-branded notebook computer, squinting, grunting, and sweating. Typing feverishly. Oh yes, almost there. Yes. One more exclamation point! Yes! YES! YES!!!
He slumps over, sweat rolling off his brow, gasping for air. He gives his Macbook screen a soft kiss. Now it's time to cuddle. - fraggle35, on 10/12/2007, -4/+371/2 size of Mac Mini, built-in power supply, USB, Ethernet, 802.11 "wireless component video", optical audio and HDMI ports, plus old RCA stereo audio ports. Works with Apple Remote
- jhourcle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22And given the size and price, no internal HD or optical disk, I'm guessing. It's probably the equivalent of a slingbox in reverse. (stream from your computer to your TV ... kinda the video version of an Airport Express)
- Dogtown7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Buy on the rumor, sell on the news...
- miles01110, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Apple/Mac stories are on the front page so often because Apple is the only computer company actually DOING anything about their product line. Microsoft announces delays, Dell announces recalls, Apple announces products.
It makes a big difference. - ejfisher, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19And works with Mac or PC...and a price of $299
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -13/+27I still want my damn widescreen video iPod! None of this "oh look over there" distractions.
Apple stock is down .84 or -1.15% right now - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -26/+40ilyag, great comment. You are a hero of digg.

- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Apple's got some balls - they're now encroaching into a very competitive space...lets see Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PS3, Tivo, Cable tv OnDemand....
I would hardly call this an "attack" or a slam dunk...should get interesting. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Digg is 100% user-contributed, you moron.
- fraggle35, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Interface is like next gen front row
- Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Wow I have to explain this wayy to much. Here goes... UNCHECK THE APPLE CATEGORY IN YOUR PROFILE.
That is all.. thanks - marcamillion, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16well i am no apple fanboy, but this coupled with iTunes movie downloads could make for a very interesting competition. Imagine being able to buy the movie on this TV Apple a week before it comes out on DVD. Could effectively kill DVD sales. Could be interesting, that's all I say.
- Mosatii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Movies are released on iTunes on the release date of the DVD's.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9They never touched on what happens (since you can't burn these to DVDs legally) if your hard drive chokes one day or your PC just dies...did you just now loose all your precious iTunes movies?
If they had allowed burning to DVD (I knew they wouldn't) it would have had a chance...at this point, places like BestBuy,etc. already sell new DVDs for $14.99 when they are first released.
So for $2.00 more you are getting a physical DVD + all the extra features that come with it. Remember these iTunes movies are movies only..no features or other crap. - unloud, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Shut. Up.
People put these stories on the main page, not administrators. If you don't like it, please feel free to go somewhere else. . . soon. - racazip, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11That's the thing-- Apple targets people who don't want to/don't have time to make their own set-top box. For that, I think it could be awesome. :)
- RyanJohnston, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16I really don't see why they would release something like that. It is a very small niche market that would want to watch video on a tiny player.
Everyone keeps waiting for them to release this "product." If they ever do, it will be a flop. Early adopters will snatch it up, and then wonder why they waited so long to watch TV shows and movies on a tiny screen. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wow your $100 DVD player includes the ability to stream HD content wirelessly? It can interact with the iTunes video store? Damn! what a deal. Can I get the brand/model # please? I want to order one.
- olivierk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The deal in announcing this now is to put pressure:
1. on Hollywood (we own the whole distribution and we'll sell more on the first week than all the HD DVD/BlueRay to date)
2. on Netflix which is attempting the same thing
3. On Amazon and any other who is going into this market the wrong way (now one except Digg readers want to stream video from their computer onto their living room TV).
Game over. Apple will own the distribution from end to end and have the most success full media delivery service out there... - Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10People, the difference between this and the already existing versions of streaming media feeds is simply that it is Apple. Now this said, that means there will most likely be supported features such as streaming a live television station through iTunes or something similiar to that effect. My reasoning for believing this is Apple's current track record with this kind of technology and how they always seem to throw in something new to an already existing technology.
I am by no means an Apple fanboy (I don't even own an iPod) but I do believe they could create yet another mass market as they did with MP3 players. We can all agree I think that Apple DID create the market as it stands today. Without them, we would still be using 500 dollar Diamond Rios that hold 64-128MB worth of MP3s.... I know I still have mine somewhere =x - snoble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'm really curious what the box will use usb for. It might just be to connect storage with media already on it. Or you might be able to sync your ipod to it (which seems weird since I doubt it has any storage itself) or rather sync your ipod to your computer through the iTV. What I really wonder is will someone make external devices for it, like say a tv tuner maybe? I don't know how that would work. Maybe the tv tuner would have its own storage? Or it would record to your computer and then you back to the iTV when you want to watch?
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7how is it ideal? it doesn't have dvr capabilities, it doesn't stream your tv or cable that you already pay for, it doesn't record video or anything that the current devices in the industry can do.
- vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Clearly this is the Airport Express for video that has been in the rumor mill for a while now.
- PhillyMJS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Man, people always find something to bitch about, don't they?
I'd bet my house that 99.9% of the people buying this will ALREADY HAVE a DVD player... and they should pay for another one because... ?
Secondly, this device is meant to be connected wirelessly to a computer which in all likelihood has a drive that can read DVDs. Who's to say you won't be able to pop a DVD into your computer and play it on your TV via Apple's box?
Why don't you wait until the features are finalized before you start laying on the criticism?
~Philly - Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Yeah, who cares about John Legend.... well I mean fans of his, but do all Apple product users care that he has an album coming out?
- tucsonwc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5grow up. Cover flow existed as a separate product befor that. Apple bought it and included it into itunes. http://www.steelskies.com/coverflow/
Sorry to burst your bubble. - P5ycHo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6the name is not final yet.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5DVD player slot is just a waste of space. I'm throwing mine out when I get this, every DVD is just going to be ripped to a HD and stored in a box in the basement as a backup.
- tucsonwc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5All your content is digital--that is the concept. You don't need to "play it" from a DVD you have it stored on your hard drive and you already have a DVD player in your home theater setup, now don't you!
- neozeed, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I got a warning from my upstream provider that their inet connection was maxing out.... apparently there are qutie a few fans out there.
- RuBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@replica
MS has clarified that WMP 11 can't stream videos, only music & photos. And besides, even if you still have MCE, you can't stream DivX/Xvid unless you use resource hungry externak applications such as Transcode 360 or VLC360.
@lakwalk
Well, even when the original XBOX had the capabilities to do more than just be a gaming console, it was the hacker community which showed the world the real capabilities of Xbox. XBMC is a proof of the capability that MS didn't use. I know several non-gamers who bought XBOX specifically for XBMC & then they bought couple of games & became gamers. Admit it, MS sometimes does have some issues in doing things a little brave.
And this iTv is nothing better than the Prismiq/Netgear MCEs that didn't deliver on the promises. Hopefully Apple can get it right. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Well, the downloads from iTunes are 4:3 aspect ratio, so if the goal of this thing was to watch movies on your new plasma, it's dead even before its release.
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -13/+16wow... lame.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5This really does seam to be the ideal device. I'm hoping the USB port works in more ways then just a print server like the airport express. Attach one of many Hard-Drives made for the mini already and you have a nice NAS with content that does not need to be streamed. I rarely watch regular broadcast TV anymore, maybe for sports. The rest of the time it is stuff I have downloaded or ripped anyways. My prediction for it's name at release is iHD.
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Regardless of how cool the tech is, or not, DO!!! we NEED!!!!! caps and exclamations AFTER every word in a HEADLINE??!!!!!......!
- Meursault, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Apple announcements are exciting and interesting. Apple backlash comments are stale and boring.
- JohnFrisco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Not impressed at all. No TV Tuner, No DVR and can't rent movies are disappointments to me. I was hoping for an answer to MS Media Center. This clearly is not.
Nanos look nice and will sell well. - feylanks, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8r -----> i ------> diculous
- RuBot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now, I'm no Apple fanboy & an MS basher. But this shows how sometimes MS lacks the foresight to execute upon their capabilities. I mean, XBOX 360 has all the capabilities to act as this one. MS could have created a system where people could buy & download movies & TV shows directly from the net & play on their big screen TVs. And although 360 can play videos from a computer, you need to have Media Center Edition.
Why can't MS make 360 work with regular XPs to stream movies? Why not allow it to stream DivX/Xvid? And, "PlaysForSure' still doesn't work with 360.
This is the difference between Apple & MS. MS gets about 95% right but the last 5% is something that seems to escape their imagination. Apple on the other hand knows what the consumer wants. It's all a matter of knowing the user. - spiderland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Could you submit English articles instead of Spanish, please? A good percentage of the Digg population can't read the articles you submit.
- Dakk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3640x480 can still house a widescreen video (with/without black bars) and have comparable resolution to a DVD.
Most likely, someone's new plasma will be dead long before 4:3 dies. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Then it would cost $600 and never hit the mainstream. $250 is the perfect price point.
- danielwsmithee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What digg really needs is the ability to customize your RSS feed like you can the front page. Don't want Apple article just click on the button to block the Apple section.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@replica - I just bought an Xbox 360 and I wasn't aware that WMP 11 would stream the videos. In fact, I've seen nothing but posts that indicate otherwise.
- Meursault, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4They stole the scroll wheel mouse from Microsoft too. :)
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@SpacemanSpiff
But Archos' versions can record media and have a hard drive in them. For instance you can use some of the Archos models as a DVR as well as play content to a TV. - moracity, on 10/12/2007, -10/+12What price do you expect? Free?? This thing is half the height of a Mini. Good luck with your crappy self-built box. While you're building your box, the rest of us will be watching our streaming movies.
DVD would be nice, but most people already have a DVD player, so that only adds to size. If you want DVD, just get a Mini instead of iTV. - JohnFrisco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I fear Steve can't live up to his hype anymore.
