Concerning "genuine"/copy protection:
"There is no serial number. There are no anti-piracy measures. There is no such thing as a 'genuine' copy of OSX. It doesn't need to be validated and will function exactly the same as if you had purchased a retail copy. Unless of course they have implemented these features since the last developer release, which is extremely unlikely." According to a comment on TL. - pwarbo, on 10/23/2007, -2/+9Just because someone say's it real in a comment on a tracker doesn't necessarily mean it's really real.
- Conquerist, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4Yes, but if a high profile scene release has been out for 3 hours+ and has not been nuked yet, the chances that it's real and works are very high.
- Angostura, on 10/24/2007, -1/+3Probably an amusingly modified leak from Cupertino. It bricks your Mac on Oct 27
- Conquerist, on 10/23/2007, -0/+4Yes, but if a high profile scene release has been out for 3 hours+ and has not been nuked yet, the chances that it's real and works are very high.
- jstennis1591, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1Hrmmmm that looks like a screenshot from OiNK? Using one of the dark stylesheets perhaps?
Did you get it from there before it shut down? Guess I'm too late.

- DontEatTheFish, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1WHERES THE WIRELESS N?!?!
- mentor972, on 10/27/2007, -4/+7Neither would I. On the Dell, don't forget to add virus software, spyware software, adware software, a decent photo editing software, movie editing software, dvd player that doesn't suck, audio player that can at least subscribe to a podacst, audio editing and multi-track software, DVD authoring tools, a dual-layer burner, a built in web-cam, 802.11n, Firewire 800 and an OS that doesn't suck and lock you out if you decide to update your ram. Oh yeah, and the wireless card isn't built in? Anything else? Oh yeah.... Make sure it won't slow the ***** down after using it for 6 months and subtract 0.8 pounds from it as well...... FACE!!!
- over90000, on 10/23/2007, -8/+2Who says you have to use Vista on dell? There is always Linux which is much better than OSX.
- jasongdx, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1OMG Linux is teh besttttt.

It doesn't meet mine. That's why I stopped using it after five years and bought a Mac.

- DontEatTheFish, on 10/23/2007, -6/+3i need the x86 version.. haha
- dondara, on 10/23/2007, -2/+1Don't we all
- colincornaby, on 10/24/2007, -0/+8The x86 version is included on the DVD. I'm assuming you mean the I'm-to-cheap-to-buy-a-Mac version.
- noogiewoo, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1finally :)
- trunkster, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2Can't you guys just wait a few more days?
- thespacepope, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1At least this way the indie developers can test (and fix) their code on this build before it's released.
- wedges, on 10/23/2007, -2/+3i guess shutting down oink didn't really prove any point
- vdubski, on 10/25/2007, -5/+4It should be up on oink, oh wait....
- willgonz, on 10/23/2007, -1/+12It's cheaper than windows server. Just buy the dang thing.
- offcenter, on 10/24/2007, -5/+1A thief, is a thief, is a thief.
- thespacepope, on 10/24/2007, -0/+2yeah... and copyright violation isn't theft.
- Wildren, on 10/24/2007, -4/+16...when did digg become a piracy site? I guess I missed the memo...
I have a feeling I'm going to get dugged down, though. - kevinisnthere, on 11/01/2007, -8/+5CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL!!!
... sorry, couldn't resist. - TheIinLive, on 10/23/2007, -1/+2yeah, I don't know how I'm going to burn this either. I don't have dual-layer discs. I'm hoping I can find a way around it, either that or i'm waiting.
- mrpena, on 10/23/2007, -3/+0is this universal or CPU specific?
- bawpcwpn, on 10/23/2007, -4/+3Come on guys, it's only $100USD or $150AUD or whatever it is in the UK and everywhere else. Even if you do end up downloading it, why not go buy a nano or something?
- pyrates, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1Whine bitch complain blah blah blah. I don't care. Go away fan boy.

- Flimnit, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2Looks like Demonoid has already received a Cease and Desist. They are blocking Canadian IP's to above link. Thank god for newsgroups.
- eylander, on 10/23/2007, -4/+2buried. digg should not be a tool for pirates.
- tocheeba, on 10/23/2007, -2/+1WOOT! i can't wait 2 hours to get home from work :( 7gb might take a while now that comcast is cutting bandwidth!!!! grrrrr
oh well - free a couple days before retail :) - jstennis1591, on 10/23/2007, -4/+1OiNK WOULD get shut down today
God! Of all days! - cassarani, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7On the one hand, it's great – it shows you what kind of power BitTorrent users may have. On the other hand, I hate it. We're not talking about crappy Microsoft products, we're dealing with a totally different league now.
Leopard is so good a product that I think most people should feel compelled to purchase it legally and be proud of it! I have nothing against those who want to try it out before they go out and spend $129 / €129 / £79 (in fact that's what P2P ought to be all about), but they should also buy it if they think it's worth it.
And it's not a matter of rules and laws, it's a matter of ethics and human decency. Call me a fanboy, but I see no ideological reasons whatsoever not to purchase it and have both a clean conscience and a great OS!- pintomp3, on 10/24/2007, -1/+1so people should steal from one company but not another?
- cave, on 10/24/2007, -1/+2Basically the point he's trying to make, and I kind of agree with, is that some companies charge way too much for their software. Microsoft, Adobe. They know that the absurd prices they charge cause rampant piracy, but they actually do little to prevent it because it actually helps them gain market share. Like good monopolies that they are, they care more about market dominance than anything else. It's a different story altogether with Apple.
- daexion, on 12/16/2007, -0/+0There is something you are forgetting: some people while not having bothered to buy a copy of the OS (they don't own a mac?) probably just want to see if they can get their computer to run it. Also, if it's not being installed on a Mac then there is no customer support available. Part of the reason you would buy software is for the customer support which you obviously won't be getting. And you would then have to take the time to ensure that the build actually works.
IMHO, my time spent getting everything working sans customer support from Apple is worth it to me. If I buy it from them then it costs a day and a half of work at my job, and I still have to get everything to work which takes time in addition to having to the time spent getting the OS install (6.6Gb) from somewhere. And then you have to consider whether or not this is actually going to be something that is even going to be used for more than a "Let's see if this works or blows my computer up" type of deal. Maybe you might consider that the brunt of my software library runs under Windows, and windows only,
- pintomp3, on 10/24/2007, -1/+1so people should steal from one company but not another?
- coltraning, on 10/25/2007, -3/+7I may get dugg down for this, but why don't you just go out and buy it? It's only $129. We don't want Apple to feel it has to implement DRM features into Mac OS X like some other companies out there, do we? I like bit-torrent as much as the next guy, but I'm just sayin... Besides, it is good software, so reward the developers!
- tocheeba, on 10/23/2007, -3/+2oh yeah - FYI - its already on newgroups, completed. newzbin.com has the nzb file up
http://v3.newzbin.com/browse/post/2716586/ - mcorto, on 10/27/2007, -6/+2Buried. I don't want to see Digg to become an announcement website for torrents!
- nextlevel233, on 10/23/2007, -0/+3why isn't it on the frontpage ? it dissapeared
- Z_Man, on 10/23/2007, -2/+2* waits for the haters to start the flaming... *
- enicholas, on 10/23/2007, -1/+8I'd like to point out that downloading the thing doesn't necessarily == piracy. I've got a paid developer account and therefore can download Leopard for free. I'm running 9a559 right now. But downloading the gold version via the torrent lets me get it sooner, because it's not seeded for developers yet.
I'm sure a meaningful percentage of the people excitedly downloading it have already paid for it and are simply excited to be getting it a couple of days sooner. Of course, I'm also sure that a bunch of them are thieving bastards.- chicagobiker, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2There are also a whole bunch of 3rd party indie developers who Apple didn't let in on the final GM. They are very much itching to get their hands on this to make sure their customers are happy Friday night.
- viruz, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2I'm one of the honest pre-paid folks who just wants a head start :)
I'm not stealing anything and I'll have my physical media in a few days.
- ozziek, on 10/27/2007, -6/+2I can't think of a better way to show your support for Apple than going out of your way to get out of spending $129 and perpetuate piracy. Well done!
- ozziek, on 10/23/2007, -2/+0And there we have it. -1 Diggs so far on my original comment and proof that for all the fanboy ***** at the end of the day you would rather download a pirated copy than pay 70 quid for a legit copy. And people wonder by companies introduce copy protection, DRM, and product activation.
- ozziek, on 10/23/2007, -2/+0And there we have it. -1 Diggs so far on my original comment and proof that for all the fanboy ***** at the end of the day you would rather download a pirated copy than pay 70 quid for a legit copy. - jpincheira, on 10/23/2007, -1/+0I'll have to use an external disk (here's a method http://forum.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/index.php ... ).
- prestige, on 10/23/2007, -1/+1blah blah blah... apple really needs your $129 blah blah blah. I've got mine pre-ordered but what if I don't want to wait till Friday?
- TVarmy, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1I already ordered it. But I'm still tempted, as my anticipation is that great. If I knew Apple couldn't trace it and that the install would be 100% the same as the one I'd get in the mail, I'd go for it this minute (That, and if my crappy college network allowed bit torrent). Apple's already been compensated from me, I'd just be getting my copy 3 days early.
