- jeffplaysmoog, on 04/28/2009, -4/+51I'd really like to be able to merge files more like windows... Meaning if I put folder "X" on the mac hard drive and then copy another folder of the same name to the hard drive, it combines the contents rather than overwriting them... I know there are some third party apps that accomplish this task, but it is really something that the OS should include...
- fraul, on 04/28/2009, -0/+40We don't need an AppZapper type of utility. What they should do is that when you drag an App to the trash (wich is a great and intuitive UI feature), the trash recognize its an App and asks you if you want to remove all the other files related to that app as well.
- arbulus, on 04/28/2009, -3/+33that's called the "beach ball of death" sir.
- digitalpencil, on 04/27/2009, -3/+32My God!? they're all good points?! and from TechRadar no less.. here was me thinking it would be all the usual ***** about MS's patented Maximization functionality and all-corner window resize.
Dugg as good ideas that need addressing but i'd like to add one, AppCleaner functionality built into trash to manage plists and provide uninstall functionality for those more complicated packages. The vast, vast majority of apps are as simple as drag to apps to install and drag to trash to uninstall but those that require uninstallers are a pain in the ass. - wush, on 04/28/2009, -1/+28- Provide an option in mouse preferences to toggle cursor acceleration (not speed). It's ridiculous that you have to spend money on a 3rd party application if you want to do this.
- kamikaze134, on 04/28/2009, -1/+21I wish they'd include a better search window.
-- By default, search the current folder, rather than the whole computer.
-- Customizable columns in List view.
-- Modifiable Saved Searches. - Maddoktor2, on 04/28/2009, -2/+18I'd like to see Finder have an option to group files and folders separately, like Windows does.
It's a pain to have to weed through a parent folder to find a subfolder that's listed alphabetically amongst the rest of the files and subfolders, instead of having all the subfolders grouped alphabetically together for easier access. - MattBD, on 04/27/2009, -4/+19The point about the clock is a good one. Ubuntu actually has similar functionality built in, with a drop-down calendar included, and it's pretty handy. Now if they could incorporate some kind of GTD software like Tasque into the calendar as well, that would be indispensible.
- waluigi14, on 04/28/2009, -0/+15I completely disagree on the "make the zoom button maximize the window" thing. Besides that having a single window stuck to the screen would break the Dock and Exposé, I just don't like having one window taking up the whole screen.
- kamikaze134, on 04/28/2009, -6/+21Make the green + button actually do something useful.
- BossKey, on 04/28/2009, -1/+16You are wrong. Apple has no UI consistency for the green button.
In Safari, it works as you described.
In TextEdit, Mail, and many other apps, it maximizes the window to the monitor, Windows-style.
In iTunes, it does neither, but a third behavior.
And these are all Apple apps. Meaning that for this control, Apple is failing at setting a consistent UI example for others to follow. - digitalpencil, on 04/28/2009, -0/+14i agree with all of these save MYSQL/PHP enabling by default as the vast majority of users won't use it and would be confused by it. Having the option however so you didn't have to download and run MAMP would be a great add.
- stubear, on 04/28/2009, -3/+16I would digg you 1,000,000 times if I could. I've been burned by their user-hostile functionality on more times that I care to count. I've written to Apple feedback regarding this issue on more then one occasion. OS X is the ONLY major OS that does not have this functionality and Windows actually does it the best of the three.
- chrisbarr, on 04/28/2009, -1/+14I was a big fan of how the Spolight search was in 10.4 Tiger with the results grouped by type and then yu can filter it down more. What happened to that?
- kamikaze134, on 04/28/2009, -1/+11In theory, that's what it's supposed to do. In practice, it's unpredictable. Sometimes it maximizes the window. Other times, it shrinks the window so you can only see half the contents.
It never does what I want it to. - rubblecovers, on 04/28/2009, -1/+10+1. finder definitely needs an option to sort with directories listed first. one of the biggest complaints you hear from people switching over.
- chrisbarr, on 04/28/2009, -0/+9Sounds like Indiana Jones V
- drmsux, on 04/28/2009, -1/+10Time Machine backing up to SMB NAS without having to run fsck on the .sparsebundle for an hour every time you close the lid during backup? Nah, that's clearly unrealistic expectations -(
- abid786, on 04/28/2009, -1/+9If you copy a file "X" to a location containing a file "X", it overwrites it.
So if you copy a folder "X" to a location containing a folder "X", shouldn't it overwrite it also? - inactive, on 04/28/2009, -0/+8Right now, my menu bar states: "Monday, April 27, 2009 11:10:41 PM"; how? Find out right here:
http://lifehacker.com/software/mac-tip/display-the ...
But I agree: it should be integrated by default. - Taiyoryu, on 04/28/2009, -1/+9The file management software should not assume the user's needs. There should be an option to choose default behavior, merge or replace. Then there should be a method to choose the alternate behavior, e.g., right-click drag instead of left-click drag. Heck Finder even throws up a modal dialog to confirm the replacement. That's an ideal time to choose replace or merge.
- pissshivers, on 04/28/2009, -1/+9Good job techradar! A list of 8 items on a single page...
- Nofour, on 04/28/2009, -0/+7Repair permissions, PRAM and cron scripts in one post. That is the ***** trifecta of OS X voodoo support that accomplishes nothing.
Seriously, please actually go into /etc/periodic and read what the scripts in /daily, /monthly and /weekly do. I'll give you a clue, for /monthly and /weekly it's log rotation and compression along with rebuilding two stores (locate.db and whatis) useful for shell work. If you really think rotating and tarring up a fax log is related to Safari's issues, more power to you. Just I'd advise not sharing that little tidbit with anyone.
So far as repair permissions:

http://daringfireball.net/2006/04/repair_permissio ... - srg13, on 04/28/2009, -0/+7I doubt they can do that without either infringing Microsoft patents, or paying heaps of royalties to them... I haven't tried it, but you can use this free software instead - http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/
- PoetofShadows, on 04/28/2009, -3/+10You can copy and paste files. Cmd-C and Cmd-V.
- kamikaze134, on 04/28/2009, -2/+9The lack of cut in the Finder really bothers me. Moving a file to another folder requires that I open a new window, drag, and then close the window.
- chrisbarr, on 04/28/2009, -0/+7You can do it without iStat menus, it's just involves a little trickery. http://paulstamatiou.com/2006/06/11/how-to-display ...
- BossKey, on 04/28/2009, -1/+7Which clueless fanboys are burying you? Along with the lack of Dock undo, the Finder needs to have undo when deleting Sidebar items. You move the mouse past the sidebar and hit the mouse button a little too early, picking up a sidebar item. You then see a puff of smoke.
What shortcut did you just delete from the Sidebar?
As with the Dock, there is no way of knowing what got accidentally deleted. There is no undo to get it back. You have to wait until you realize what is missing, and then navigate to the original and add it back in. If this level of incompetence was in Windows, we Mac people would be pointing and laughing. - digitalpencil, on 04/28/2009, -2/+8what the ***** is a marble of doom? and, try repairing permissions, resetting PRAM and running cron scripts. Browsers lock up every now and again but it shouldn't do it on a regular basis.
you'd be surprised what sudo periodic daily weekly monthly will fix.. - FearlessFreep, on 04/28/2009, -0/+6Between Cmd-Q, Cmd-W, Cmd-H, and Cmd-M at my fingers....I don't think I actually every uses those buttons (maybe the red one for a small dialog or the green one for resizing a browser window but that's usually about it...
- gdphishman817, on 04/28/2009, -0/+6It's in the international settings under the the formats tab, I also have time and date in my menu
- Virgule, on 04/28/2009, -1/+7My lame takes on that:
1) Rollback Spotlight system to Tiger fashioned:
The Spotlight menu bar icon (CMD+SPACEBAR) is for system-wide searches.
The Finder window's Search field is for filtering the content of that window.
2) Fix Finder's view modes quirks. If I set the root directory to "Icon" and one of its sub-folders as "list", the root window will inherit the sub-folder's view properties if I hit the back button... but not every time.. This ***** suck.
Also retain the slider's position..
3) Provide a choice for how Finder's manage the display of long filenames... Shorten at the start, middle or end of filename? Report(...)86D.doc plain suck when there is many filenames starting with "Report". - yttrstein, on 04/28/2009, -3/+8Sorry, I'm from the UNIX (TM) world, which is why I like OS X so much. We call it "the marble of doom".
- digitalpencil, on 04/28/2009, -2/+7filter it dumbass.
- arbulus, on 04/28/2009, -4/+9How about ejecting them before you unplug them?
Oh and windows will give you ***** when you plug your USB drive back in if you didn't "safely remove" it the last time you unplugged. - GregR, on 04/28/2009, -0/+5Put your iTunes and iPhoto libraries in the shared folder.
Problem solved. - geodebug, on 04/28/2009, -1/+6Well, I'm guessing if they did connect to an app they'd link it with iCal.
- ifallen, on 04/28/2009, -0/+5yes, but command N opens a new window no matter what you are using, not just finder...
we can't have a special command only work in awkward situations like making a new folder...
i use command N all the time... if i started creating folders all over i'd be a little pissed... - inactive, on 04/28/2009, -0/+5I understood the point. But in the meantime I was suggesting an alternative to AppZapper since one that is in the system does not exist yet.
- ZeroCubed, on 04/28/2009, -2/+7Funny, those are 8 problems I just never run into, or don't even notice to give a damn.
- BossKey, on 04/28/2009, -0/+5Better yet, give the green button a consistent meaning. It does different things in Mail, Safari, and iTunes. Three different behaviors for the same button.
- KSUdesigner, on 04/28/2009, -1/+6Right click has been standard for many years, as long as you are using a mouse with a right button. And the mighty mouse right click is enabled by default.
- inactive, on 04/28/2009, -1/+6I kind of like #7 - if I'm trying to follow a help document and need to keep switching back to my app, it's annoying to have the help disappear, or have to ***** around resizing windows to make both of them visible at once.
- corpski, on 04/28/2009, -0/+5@gordeaoux
Try that on a file and tell me if it worked. - mrBitch, on 04/28/2009, -0/+5@ fraul, RE: "... What they should do is that when you drag an App to the trash (wich is a great and intuitive UI feature), the trash recognize its an App and asks you if you want to remove all the other files related to that app as well."
While I agree with you that this feature should be built into OSX, you can get EXACTLY this feature if you download a free program called "AppTrap" :
http://konstochvanligasaker.se/apptrap/
" ... This is exactly what AppTrap does. Whenever you drag an application to the trash, a dialog window will pop up, asking if you want to delete the associated system files too. Simple as that." - phreak22, on 04/28/2009, -1/+6The clock/date thing is doable... I don't remember how I did it but I googled it and I have date and time in my menubar.
- palmer, on 04/28/2009, -0/+4It's not a marble, and definitely NOT a beach ball.
It's a pinwheel. Look at it. -
