We have some 2.66Ghz Mac Pros are work and they're quite lovely, but honestly if you can't afford one then that's because you don't need one.
- neoform, on 10/12/2007, -7/+89Don't you mean "bloody" hell?
- buzzedlightyear, on 10/12/2007, -9/+89finally a machine that will handle Vista.

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+83You guys are missing smooooooooooooothie's point. Apple's using Doom 3 as a benchmark. That sends mixed signals: Are they trying to sell us a gaming system with the wrong video card, or are they selling us a workstation with the right video card using inappropriate benchmarks?
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+69if you have to ask it's not for you.
- OverloadUT, on 10/12/2007, -6/+69For anyone that is curious:
An 8-core system (two 3.0GHz Quad-Core processors) with all default settings except processor (1gb ram, 250gb hdd, GeForce 7300 GT) costs $3,997.00.
A 4-core system (two 3.0GHz Dual-Core) with the same settings costs $3,298.00
A 4-core system (two 2.0GHz Dual-Core) with the same settings costs $2,200.00 - rathofbuns, on 10/12/2007, -15/+73I think I might have expected a little more fanfare, but oh well.

3D rendering in Maya and scientific computing show up to 3.1x as fast. - childprey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+59You needed eight cores to do that?
- amfr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+55@smoothie: The Mac Pro is a workstation, not a typical desktop, that would be the iMac. The Mac Pro is intended for 3d graphics rendering, high-end audio editing, etc.
Edit: Beat by drlha - Cwo655321, on 10/12/2007, -31/+72is it just me or does apple really make you search for that 'buy now' button
- smooothie, on 10/12/2007, -27/+67I may get a little flame back from this, but maybe the Mac oriented people here can help me understand this. Is it really necessary to offer a desktop model that utilizes an Intel Server class processor? If anything it drives the price through the roof. In addition to that it forces you to use super expensive memory (I believe the new server standard is FB-DIMMs). I'm thinking that a quad core CORE 2 would drop the price, but I'm not sure if there are any mobos out that support 2 quad CORE 2's.
Another thing that seemed a little odd about the advert for this was the section about the 3 graphics cards options in which they show a performance graph for Doom 3 & they include the GeForce Quadro in the comparison. First of all, the Quadro line is mean't to be used for Professional applications & the drivers aren't optimized at all for gaming, instead they're for precision for 3D modeling. I think it's a bad choice for a graphics line up. If they want people to game with this system as well they should scrap the 7300 offering & offer a high end 7900 or 8 series part in addition to that Quadro offering.
Other than that, this machine looks beautiful! - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -10/+48@dmsean
33 million possible configurations... but only 3 GPU choices. - Lycander, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42@smooothie:

The Mac Pro isn't a "desktop" model in the sense that it's targeted at home users. Sure there's nothing stopping joe six-pack from buying one if he has the money, but the Mac Pro really is geared towards professionals. You'll often hear the Mac Pro refered to as a "workstation." - nick2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38Use them carefully
- BenBenMan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35"world ’s first 3.0GHz, 8-core Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro"
... that's a bit obvious isn't it? What other company is going to release a 3GHz 8-core Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro?? - neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Some people need to compensate for shortcomings in other areas.
- GruntboyX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35Now i have to ask....what to do with all those cores???
- alex189a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29He's an angry nerd doing a drive by "I hate anything I won't personally buy" comment, a distant relative of the American redneck, famous for "I hate anywhere I'd never visit".
No one cares what you think or what you spend money on dude. Don't like it, don't buy it. - macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31Hating mac users is so old.
- macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36A lot sexier than a mid-class sedan too.
- slalomskier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Come out with leopard so we can use them!
- Floris, on 10/12/2007, -9/+35This really sucks, because they are all still 4core models, and the quad-core model is 1500 dollar more, making the 8core one 4000 usd :(
I was hoping for a better video card by default, bluetooth and wifi included, and 2gb ram default. THAT would make it worth $3500 - macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29I think by the time you hit your 8th core you're into "Running your own porn recording studio"
- Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29@smooothie
Think Pixar dude - robbiedo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Logic pro can easily make use of 8 cores. Lets say you have 24 audio tracks, 16 soft synths and samplers, effects processing on all those channels. All happening simultaneously. Yes, 8 cores would help.
- mager, on 10/12/2007, -11/+33I just priced out an $18,500 machine. This is more than a mid-class sedan!
- meltingrobot, on 10/12/2007, -10/+31Install Linux and run a lot of VM's. ;)
- longboarder543, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25 For only $13,426.00, you get:

- darushin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21The problem with the Video? For Apple's High end machine I would expect X1950XT, Geforce 79xx, Geforce 8xxx series as the offerings. Sorry, but a 7300 or x1900 as my only video choices on a 3K+ machine is just plain weak. Also unlike Wintel, you can't just run and buy a new Nvidia or ATI card cause after a quick check there are no OSX drivers for most of their lineup.
- JimXugle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Now how about an updated Mac Mini?
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21schweeet! Now which gas station should I knock over...
- weprin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Ummm... brag. Duh!
- meshman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17"The world ’s first 3.0GHz, 8-core Intel Xeon-based Mac Pro"
What a ridiculous statement. Who the hell else is going to produce an 8 core Mac Pro? Dell? - broeks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Yeah most millionaires are rich...
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I am sure it runs fairly well.
In the lower left corner, in Parallels. - seevicdookie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19All im going to say is "wow" and "I want one (when im a rich millionaire)" :D
- jpjandrade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15You know what? Just rip some DVDs, while letting Mathematica calculate the Pi for 10³³¹ digits, leave two WoWs running on the background, while surfing Digg... just because you can. Just because you wish to. You've got 8 ***** cores and no one will tell you how to use then, so just waste then out of luxury.
Or, as someone said above, know that you don't need if you have to ask... - blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17"Why the hell is this not available on the UK store?"
Because the price in pounds would sink the budget of the Royal Family. - splinechaser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Right, but it's an HP.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16L0LZ0RZ! Nope, it's not a CLIFFosakaJAPAN submission...
- ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Well, i'm a network admin for a company that's 80% mac (we design medical training simulators). I've got the quad core 2.66 under my desk.
Right now I'm running:
Safari (this page)
Entourage (my exchange account)
Parallels (a windows image for certain administration, like RSA security keychains)
Apple Remote Desktop (I can see/monitor/control every mac on my network)
Disk Utility (imaging a macbook in target disk mode)
2 citrix sessions....
should i even keep going? Thats not even mentioning when i'm running photoshop and illustrator in rosetta.
The mac pro takes all this without even flinching. Yes, there is a reason for it to exist, and it doesnt even take a scientist or some ultra-high end application to justify it. - joeycerone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13thank god for the apple student discount. my price went from $4300 to $3600
- Koyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13It's Photoshop CS2, meaning it runs under Rosetta (emulation) on the Mac Pro. Wait until Apple updates the page for the CS3 (Intel-native) version of Photoshop.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14most adobe apps take advantage of the multi-core architecture. apples apps do. right there you've got most video apps. then add in Maya and others and you've pretty much covered the creative community.
i don't think anyone is planning on buying one of these to run MS Office. - splinechaser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15you hate what you fear.
- scelestus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+125 out of 4 people have trouble with fractions.
