- davidrools, on 10/22/2007, -13/+59Nothing else with such a proprietary architecture dominates in a consumer market like the ipod. I had/have about a dozen non-apple mp3 players and really tried to avoid the ipod as much as possible because it was too trendy for my tastes. Despite my opposition I ended up with a nano to use with the Nike+ running kit...and then got a speaker system with the dock. Now I'm considering getting a 6th gen ipod classic since it'll work with the dock and it's a much cheaper 80gb mp3 player than previous versions... So I guess they deserve credit for making even anti-ipod people relent. But I still recognize the weaknesses in the device, where my other devices make up for it. And I still don't like to use iTunes.

- mikeazorin, on 10/23/2007, -2/+33That article was written terribly, and provided barely any useful information.
- lintmonkey, on 10/21/2007, -2/+27It only changes every four months if you buy one. If you wait for the next revision, it takes about a year.
- wittyname, on 10/21/2007, -6/+29Remind me if I ever have a multi-billion-dollar idea to change it every four months.
- igraham09, on 10/21/2007, -1/+23You're kidding right? I have one of THE FIRST iPods. Yes, the 5 GB, first generation, no-click-wheel, brick of an iPod.
And it still works like the day I bought it. - mrminty, on 10/21/2007, -1/+20"The Shuffle was released for people who want the iPod experience without shelling out a significant chunk of money."
I rolled my eyes so hard, I think I have a cramp. - AriaStar, on 10/21/2007, -6/+24So that means that six years ago today the iPod wasn't released. Maybe it's just part of being Gen Y, but I have a hard time now fathoming life before iPods, like 'em or love 'em. Hell, tougher still is remembering life before internet, when doing a research paper meant going to the library and looking up books in a card catalog.
- Zarokima, on 10/21/2007, -4/+22I've had mine for 3 years and it still works perfectly, having never been replaced or repaired.
- avatarpalin, on 10/20/2007, -2/+17I have put my G3 away in a cupboard.. So in about 20 years time I can pull it out... and listen to classic tunes like 'Pretty Fly for a White Guy" and "Crazy Frog Euro Dance Mix"
*sniff* ahhh the memories.... - deadnoob, on 10/21/2007, -5/+18digg me down
- Ocelot13, on 10/20/2007, -4/+16The cake is a lie.
- proficient, on 10/21/2007, -6/+17Apple has a big penis.
- Niddik, on 10/20/2007, -10/+21Erm... What's that about Mac fanboyism you say?
- manitoba98xp, on 10/21/2007, -1/+12Twelve thousand dollars? None of Apple's default models costs twelve thousand dollars, you'd have to make an insanely configured Mac Pro to meet that.
- Mpulse, on 10/20/2007, -0/+9Yeah, want to make sure the kids aren't looking up something bad online? Make internet searches use the Dewey Decimal system.
Also, I don't remember much, but my recollections of life before iPods include road trips where I would browse my friends' huge 50 lb CD folders and show off how good the skip protection was on my Sony Diskman. - whatthefu, on 10/20/2007, -2/+11I still use my third generation iPod. I'm not sure why, though. The battery life is horrible.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/21/2007, -0/+9Haven't heard any complaints about batteries for a while... I'm guessing they solved that problem.
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -1/+9Mac OS X is UNIX.
- D3koy, on 10/20/2007, -3/+11Will there be cake?
- celebi23, on 10/21/2007, -0/+7I've had my 3rd Gen iPod since June of '03 & it still works amazingly. 4 ***** years man :)
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -2/+9So now we're digging up Apple stories that aren't even interesting? THUMBS UP GUYS!
- Nerfdude, on 10/20/2007, -0/+6my first discman had 10 second ESP, and a really flimsy top. you could push down on it and see the cd stop in the little viewing window... for ten seconds. it was awesome.
- simmux, on 10/21/2007, -0/+5It is the first iPod to have wifi. They're talking about iPods... Just in case you missed it...
- GeneralGore, on 10/21/2007, -1/+6The 2nd generation Mini must have been created around the the same time as Myspace.
- JuliusErving, on 10/20/2007, -0/+5This really wasn't done very well. I'd much rather just go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod
- jonahan52, on 10/20/2007, -2/+6Maybe he burned them to a CD and Reripped them to remove the DRM. You whiny *****.
- kevinmotel, on 10/21/2007, -1/+5an insanely well configured mac pro
- dupe, on 10/21/2007, -3/+6Just get a ***** laptop already...
- spinningobo, on 10/20/2007, -2/+5The sarcasm tag is always required on Digg.
No exceptions. - victorycig, on 10/21/2007, -9/+12Awww... seeing the 3rd gen iPod with its glowing red buttons makes me nostalgic. *Sniff*
It was the beginning of my pilgrimage to Mac. - gfnw, on 10/22/2007, -0/+3No *****. That's what he's saying. He'd like them to sell OSX as a platform independant OS so his hardware works with it.
- Lacero, on 10/20/2007, -1/+4My 20GB 2nd gen iPod still kicking. ps. you have a small dick.
- inkswamp, on 10/20/2007, -0/+3Nope. At the time Apple introduced the iPod Nano, the iPod Mini was outselling the iPod like crazy. I think a lot of companies would have sat back and enjoyed the ride and been afraid that changing anything might disrupt whatever magical thing was causing the product to fly off the shelves. It was almost frightening how casually Apple tossed aside a wildly successful product like the iPod Mini and moved on.
- northernmunky, on 10/21/2007, -0/+3gargantuan penis
- turquoisefish, on 10/20/2007, -0/+3I assumed that newbill123 is referring to Hewlett Packard rather than Harry Potter.
- Nerfdude, on 10/21/2007, -1/+4that is so cool. way to buy stuff!
- theone3, on 10/20/2007, -0/+3Must.. resist... pointing... out... terrible.. gra
Oh thank goodness, it passed. - inkswamp, on 10/20/2007, -0/+2My 4th gen. is still running strong after 3 1/2 years and that's after being dropped on the floor by my son 3 times. My daughter's nano, is approaching 2 years. I know someone who owns a 3rd gen. that is still going, and large number of co-workers and friends who have iPods between 1-3 years that are still doing their thing.
That image of the iPod being prone to breaking just proves that old vocal minority thing. - rawheadrex, on 10/22/2007, -2/+4While I respect your personal preferences and choices, I find it interesting, because while I do think the iPod is just a fantastic DAP (I've owned 1st gen 5GB, 3rd gen 40GB, 4th gen 20GB, 1st gen shuffle, and iPhone 8GB), I can see that other hardware, like you say, are better than the iPod in one way or another. The one reason I absolutely will NOT consider anything but an iPod at this point is iTunes.
- roboticelephant, on 10/21/2007, -0/+2Yeah, except you can only install it on proprietary hardware, and I'd get my ass sued off if I tried to redistribute it.
- Elranzer, on 10/21/2007, -0/+2Looks like Apple somehow went back in time and copied double-shot from the Zune to the 1st and 2nd gen iPods.
- cambob76, on 10/22/2007, -1/+3Because your poor like Kenny!
- chinolofus, on 10/20/2007, -3/+53rd gen still looks the coolest.
- inactive, on 10/21/2007, -0/+2Why would you want visualisations with your music? I'd rather have the battery life thanks. And we all know how well Sony's batteries are made.
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -1/+3You have a 160GB hard drive in your cell phone? Impressive.
Fact: your phone is a trend.. with technology implemented to make it more like the iPod you hate so very much. - inkswamp, on 10/21/2007, -1/+3I don't know what this "cake" thing is, but I've just been watching episodes of David Lynch's "Rabbits" on YouTube, and this exchange you're all having fits the feel of that so well it's cracking me up.
- dporter6, on 10/21/2007, -4/+6if those two songs are in any way indicative of your overall musical taste, you should bury the ***** thing and salt the earth, hoping no unfortunate soul ever stumbles upon it.
good christ, crazy frog... - inkswamp, on 10/20/2007, -0/+2No, I'm not going to tell you where the innovation is because you're not really looking for an answer to that question.
