- pdileepa, on 08/08/2009, -6/+140Let me give you just one very good reason: "It's YOUR phone."
You should be able to do whatever you want to with your phone. It's not for Apple or AT&T to dictate what apps you can install on YOUR phone. - pplufthesun, on 08/08/2009, -10/+97***** THE RIAA!
- monkeybones22, on 08/08/2009, -4/+83Is there a reason NOT to jailbreak it?
- ipt2g, on 08/07/2009, -1/+61You can already tether your iPhone for free without jailbreaking (although the article did mention that). Just go to help.benm.at and download your mobileconfig. Theming is also one of the big reasons to jailbreak.
The percentage of jailbroken iPhones increased by 0.43% last week, the same week that Apple removed the GV Mobile app and banned all Google Voice Apps. Pinch Media recently posted these statistics in their newsletter:

Take that Apple! - joshconsulting, on 08/08/2009, -1/+56Jailbreaking is ridiculously easy. It's literally down to a 1 click process. I see no reason why anyone wouldn't - my phone has been jailbroken since I got it. A few apps like Multitasker and 3g Unrestrictor make life much better. And if you ever need the warranty, just run a restore before you take it in.
- mrsteveman1, on 08/08/2009, -0/+35That basically proves they have no reason to void the warranty.......
- HorseloverFat8, on 08/08/2009, -1/+25You think it's illegal to install software on a device that you yourself own?
- ipt2g, on 08/08/2009, -9/+32Pay for your apps and support the devs. Dev Team, the people who created jailbreak don't support Installous!
- spookyttws, on 08/08/2009, -10/+31Does anyone really need a reason to jailbreak their iPhone? Hell, Installous (the pirate app store, it has only pirated versions of the Apps you have to pay for in the Official App Store) is a wonderful way to try out programs without getting burned by paying for a crappy program.
- Khast, on 08/08/2009, -0/+20That's their problem. They offered an "unlimited" (6GB) service, and god damn it, if I want to use all 6GB downloading movies, and stuff on their service, than that is my god damned right... I paid for the service. If their service cannot handle the load... THEY SHOULDN'T OFFER.
- GoatRoper, on 08/08/2009, -3/+23#7 Cycorder
- joshconsulting, on 08/08/2009, -0/+19Yep, the jailbreak apps are just an added bonus
- cJw314, on 08/08/2009, -0/+18No, I can pretty much guarantee that's incorrect.
- mrsteveman1, on 08/08/2009, -2/+19I'm more upset about the lack of cowbell.
- EdwardsNH, on 08/08/2009, -0/+16Quick question. I assume I can still use all the apps I already bought, if I jailbreak?
- gdan11, on 08/08/2009, -1/+167) Backgrounder. Sure, push notifications have solved the issue of messages not being delivered after certain applications quit...but the ability to multitask--to listen to Pandora while using Navigon turn by turn--is incredibly useful. iPhone 3gs can easily handle about 5 apps running simultaneously with the amount of RAM it has.
- SPECOPS, on 08/08/2009, -2/+17"if that is true, then you must concede the same right of AT&T's to deny you accessing "their" wireless towers." --- not if you're paying them $$ to access said towers, plus it is not like you have an option, you can't just "not have the data plan" or you can't just have a data plan w/o a voice plan.
- joshconsulting, on 08/08/2009, -0/+14Fair enough, I have the 3GS and didn't bother with the 3.0.1 update, but redsn0w isn't much more difficult - a 2 minute procedure at the most.
- CommodoreCrunch, on 08/08/2009, -24/+36Jalibreaking your iPhone just lets the terrorists win, and bring down the nation's wireless network, and will poison Steve Job's new liver...
- CommodoreCrunch, on 08/08/2009, -1/+13Was it the "liver" comment?! :)
- pdileepa, on 08/08/2009, -1/+13You are paying for that 'privilege'.
- ipt2g, on 08/08/2009, -1/+12That's what Apple said, and they lied!
- SquareWheel, on 08/08/2009, -0/+11"Un-jailbreak"? Do an upgrade and rejailbreak like most people do. I like to start fresh on each version though.
- RobbyDigital, on 08/08/2009, -0/+11I was one of the iPhone users that was finally pushed over the edge... I've got a day 1 first gen, and I decided to jailbreak last week. Everyone kept saying the battery life will decrease, but as long as you don't constantly have crap running in the background, you won't notice a difference at all. Really, it's quite nice.
The Google Voice app is okay... nothing amazing, but it works. I was pleasantly surprised at some of the other features that came along with jailbreaking. SBprefs is awesome, since it allows easy access to common preferences. I no longer have to close an app and launch settings, just to turn off wifi. - gdan11, on 08/08/2009, -2/+13From what I've gathered, you'll only run into problems if you have a 2g iPhone that has been "hacktivated" (ie activated without an AT&T sim). Jailbreaking your 3g and 3gs should not affect push.
- mrsurfboard, on 08/08/2009, -0/+10Ugly themes
- brillyfresh, on 08/08/2009, -1/+11negative, AP News still pushes to my jailbroken phone
- mrBitch, on 08/08/2009, -4/+13Zing!
- mrsteveman1, on 08/08/2009, -0/+9Don't really care anymore
- manofaction, on 08/08/2009, -2/+11I've heard that jailbreaking breaks push notifications - has anyone here had experience?
- DJRobX, on 08/08/2009, -1/+9Didn't think I'd care too much about unlocking, but we decided to go on vacation to Sydney, Australia. For $30 I just popped a Telstra pay as you go SIM in the phone and I've got both data and voice without fear of crazy roaming charges or needing some stupid "international plan". It's so nice to be able to just use MY phone on MY terms. I'm going to ensure that I upgrade as the Dev Team prescribes to retain its unlockable status. Thanks to all the talented hackers out there that make this stuff possible!
- OptimismPrime, on 08/08/2009, -0/+8for chists sake DON'T ***** the RIAA!
don't ever give it a chance to produce offspring - joshconsulting, on 08/08/2009, -0/+8Multitasker, 3g unrestrictor and a QuickSMS make my life so much easier.
- diggaligg, on 08/08/2009, -0/+8Well I'm not happy about it because AT&T and Apple are clearly puting their own interests ahead of the consumer. It's easy to defend usage caps or SMS rates as everyday business management, but smothering a potentialy superior app to death is not in the spirit of healthy competition. They're laying stones for new regulations. Ironic that AT&T is center stage once again.
- 5ean, on 08/08/2009, -0/+7Hell, even I wouldn't listen to their horrible music.
- jer2eydevil88, on 08/08/2009, -0/+7Nope.
- enantiodromia, on 08/08/2009, -4/+11@TDD, you think that same contract doesn't have line in the TOS preventing jail breaking?
@pd & SPECOPS, paying the agreed upon payment to a vendor as defined in your contractual agreement does not release you from being bound to the terms of the contract.
what we are seeing now is a generation of "me me me" iPhone users, who feel they should not have to be bound to the contracts they signed, and more than likely, never actually read in the first place.
i don't understand why so many people would digg me down for stating the facts as laid out in the Universal Commercial Code.
you don't have to like it, but that's the way it is. if you don't like the contract, don't sign the contract.
simple as that. - andreo, on 08/08/2009, -0/+6I really like my iPhone. But I cannot defend some of the decisions that Apple has made.
I was actually thinking today that if Apple doesn't open up the phone a bit more, enable some multitasking, and ATT doesn't get its act together with its network. I may be forced to switch to the Pre next time around.
I love the apps. I love the way the iPhone feels and operates. But what good is it if I'm in the middle of large city and I can't get a signal? What good is it if I can't multitask without voiding the warranty? And Apple's only concern with apps should be: will this app cause harm to the phone. Not will this app confuse the consumer ie; Latitude. - digitaldivinci, on 08/08/2009, -4/+10Needs more /s
- TDDebug, on 08/08/2009, -1/+6Also, you signed a contract to get that privilege too.
- Idontknowshit, on 08/08/2009, -5/+103G Unrestrictor - So you can run WiFi only apps like Skype and Slingplayer on 3G
Backgrounder - So you can run apps in the background
PDANet - So you can tether effortlessly
Poof - Hide apps that use don't use
iRealQuickSMS - Allows you to respond to text messages from whatever app your in without having to close the app and open up the Messaging app
Cycorder - Video recording for those who don't have the 3GS
To be able to theme my phone is also thee most important to me.

http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q152/trediggidy ... - diggic, on 08/08/2009, -2/+7One reason people really do it is because of the Google Voice.........I mean come on even I did it @joehobot
- evilelf2407, on 08/08/2009, -1/+6as someone that just jailbroke their iphone a couple weeks ago i can say that it is pretty easy. i tried it about 9 months ago and it was a lot harder than it is now. i didnt even lose any data!
- TDDebug, on 08/08/2009, -1/+6Amen. Installous ftw.
- dougs55, on 08/08/2009, -0/+48) Insomnia if you don't want your wifi dropping every time the phone sleeps.
9) Siax for a good voip phone that works with Google Voice. My only criticism of Siax is that they should change the code to take advantage of notification. - i23Photography, on 08/08/2009, -8/+12Why should it be illegal to hack what's yours? I hate when companies restrict or limit you from using your device to do what you want it to do. I hope the iPhone falls from its throne, and I hope it's a painful fall.
- dojocasino, on 08/08/2009, -0/+4I don't know why you're getting dugg down, you do have a perfectly valid point.
That said, if the thing stops working to the point where it won't even turn on, they're unlikely to find out it's been jailbroken until after they've fixed it, right? - thisthatwhat, on 08/08/2009, -0/+4Glad I don't have to deal with AT&T. I'm using Roger's in Canada. I've got MMS and free tethering with my plan. I'm content even without jailbreaking. :) Of course out of habit I still did the jailbreak. To completely eliminate anything that would possibly drain my battery life I don't install any background apps. I don't have SBsettings, bossprefs, Winterboard, etc... It seems to free more memory for my apps as well. I just jailbreaked it to sim unlock the iPhone.
- jer2eydevil88, on 08/08/2009, -0/+4Don't you watch Southpark? Mickey Mouse masterminded the Jonas Brothers.
- paradigmxx, on 08/08/2009, -0/+4This article has finally got me convinced now that I found out about 3G Unrestrictor.
Thanks guys. -
