- crashdvis, on 08/28/2009, -2/+25Where is the app to tell you how much AT&T sucks? I swear to god I hate AT&T. They have got to be the king of dropped calls and slow networks. How about reception? Not at my house or in any building. In fact, if I even THINK of going in to a building my call will get dropped. The network sucks at such a high level it even knows what I am thinking.
Two tin cans tied with string are a better networking solution than AT&T and AT&T gets exclusive rights to the iPhone. They are allowed to suck because the have the gadget that everyone wants. They have no incentive to make their service better.
My contract is up with AT&T and I called yesterday to drop 2 phone lines off our cell phone account since my kids went off on to their own plans and you know what AT&T said? It will take up to 6 days to process the cancellation request because they are so back logged on requests to cancel.
Amazing. - madwh, on 08/28/2009, -2/+13The built-in maps app is almost perfect, all it needs is voice directions, landscape mode and larger font. Google + maps = awesome
- ilikeeggs8877, on 08/28/2009, -0/+9dugg for seemingly unrelated rant
- LeechesOfKarma, on 08/28/2009, -3/+12So AT&T is the only one on a subscription model, while the others are a one time fee? These phone companies are just out of control.
- migitalwarfare, on 08/28/2009, -0/+7There are plenty of reasons to use a nav app instead of google maps.
1) Voice directions are safer
2) Automatic recalculation if you miss a turn
3) Ability to recalculate based on road block ahead
4) Ability to avoid certain roads
5) MULTIPLE WAYPOINTS
6) Wide Screen view gives you a better view of surrounding points of intererst (like gas stations a few miles off the highway)
7) When you're in some backwoods, no-coverage area, and don't know where the hell you are, on-board maps are key.
8) TomTom's IQ Routes are actually faster
9) The nav apps are designed for driving purposes, so everything is big and easy to read. No more leaning in to get a better look at what the road names are.
10) ETAs that are accurate.
11) Miles left to go. - SlavaKM, on 08/28/2009, -0/+6I have all of these and i usually go with the Navigon.
- jeriqo, on 08/28/2009, -0/+6Google maps cannot recalculate the route if you missed a turn.
- xaxxon, on 08/28/2009, -0/+4Is anyone else confused how the palm pre gets a checkmark for the feature "Ipod in the background" on the feature summary chart?
- brickbat, on 08/28/2009, -0/+4I have one word for you - DOODLE JUMP!
- jeriqo, on 08/28/2009, -0/+4So the Palm Pre version is very nice, specially since it is free, but the last line "offline viewing = NO" ruins it all.
- BigLou, on 08/28/2009, -2/+5To get free VZNavigator on a Verizon phone:
1. Download the full application. (Don't worry, the price is based on use throughout a month, you won't be charged in full.)
2. Use BitPim to backup your application onto your computer.
3. Cancel your subscription on the phone. The App will be deleted.
4. Using BitPim, place the backup app from your computer back onto your phone.
5. Reboot your phone and voila! You have full access to VZNavigator without paying for the subscription.
*You will get data charges if you don't have a data plan.
I did this little over a year ago and use VZNavigator on an almost daily basis. I have not once been charged. - ilikeeggs8877, on 08/28/2009, -0/+3*cough* 2 words *cough*
- DaviDTC, on 08/28/2009, -0/+2vice versa - google voice
- danc4498, on 08/28/2009, -0/+2They left the best one off the list... Google Maps still works perfectly for my needs.
- robszol, on 08/28/2009, -0/+2not everyone (especially outside the states) can afford a data plan to get navigation on the fly. Google maps on the iPhone SUCKS for that.
- clith, on 08/28/2009, -0/+2Hm, it completely ignored "Roadee", which uses http://openstreetmap.org
- harlowsmonkeys, on 08/28/2009, -0/+2I believe I read that the reason there is no voice directions on the built-in map is that the license Google has for the data prohibits it being used for such applications, and so that restriction had to passed on in the license from Google to Apple for the map data.
- pdethier, on 08/29/2009, -0/+1Navigon is by far my favorite, the TomTom is a major dissapointment considering how it was hyped at the WWDC. The voice prompts are late and the interface is just very bleh.
- jeffmon, on 08/28/2009, -0/+1TomTom app kept saying "take left" "make first left" "turn left in 600 feet" "make a left" x2 all within 5 minutes.
- migitalwarfare, on 08/28/2009, -0/+1They'll see how awesome the subscription model is when people drop that ***** and get a better app and only have to pay once for it.
- vocalyouth, on 08/28/2009, -0/+1The TomTom app is pretty disappointing. It worked pretty poorly in testing for me here in Pittsburgh without the optional cradle... it was constantly re-routing and sending me the most round-about absurd ways to get places. Not a good look. A regular TomTom is cheaper and works better.
- jhalar, on 08/28/2009, -0/+16 days? I hope they dont plan on charging you while the wait. AOL is really good about their "requests to cancel" making you stay with them paying forever
- xXM3talHeadXx, on 08/28/2009, -0/+1Someone is confused about the definition of "spam."
- CoachY, on 08/28/2009, -0/+1The article is pretty useless, other than listing the GPS apps. Are you aware that some of the apps shown actually say the street names? That's not in the article! I will tell you. The AT&T navigator does. TomTom does not! I had the AT&T navigator for a month and found that it said the street names very well (better than VZ navigator on my Verizon phone). I got the TomTom app as soon as it was available. I was very disappointed to see it just say "turn right"! Blah!
I have also found recently that my iPhone GPS is very weak. I put mine next to someone elses iPhone in the same car, same GPS apps, and mine gives a weak or no signal, the other gives a good one. The new TomTom car dock (not out yet) will have it's own built-in GPS circuit, so that should get around the problem. - Rudegar, on 08/28/2009, -0/+1if you don't have coverish for the phone network
as if you're lost in a deserted desolate place
your gps would still work helping you find your way back to cell cover - JackGrinnan, on 08/28/2009, -0/+1*gets lost reading through all the comparisons*
GET IT???????? GUYS? Guys? - Rudegar, on 08/28/2009, -2/+2landscape ? why
I know gamin and tomtom and all those standalone gps makers
tried to hype their widescreen models
but do we really need a panoramic overview of where we're not driving
and not suppose to drive ? - crazysamz, on 08/28/2009, -2/+2I used the Navigon app to get from my friend's house in Springfield to a beach in RI. We used it and a TomTom navigator head-to-head to see which was better, and the TomTom only got us within 5 miles of the beach, then told us we were there, when in fact we were not. It was confusing us, so we used the iphone to get to the beach and then all the way back home. Now I use the TomTom app since it's a little bit faster and imo it's design is a little bit more straightforward. (Plus I got both apps for free! INSTALLOUS FTW!)
- rustybadge, on 08/28/2009, -2/+1I tend to agree... I can't see the value. Maybe I am just a luddite.
- Sleepyhead157, on 08/28/2009, -7/+2If I still had my car, I'd definitely get one of these for my car instead of the integrated GPS systems
- badwithcomputer, on 08/28/2009, -11/+5i've never had a problem just using iphone's google maps app and the built-in gps. not really sure why anyone would want one of these apps.
