- chourobin, on 10/11/2007, -12/+99How many of you guys actually went to see the iphone? its kind of cool, and has a never-before-seen feel to it. I think the product is quite good. I dont know why so many complain about it.
- HairyPoter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+68is Steve Ballmer still laughing right now?
- Quix, on 10/11/2007, -46/+110Waiting for flag564's "The iPhone is a flop!" post...
*crickets chirping* - dcbebop, on 10/11/2007, -4/+54Do you think Verizon is now kicking themselves for passing up on the contract?
Hrrmm... the ability to sign 500,000 new 2year contracts the first weekend? Who in their right mind would want that? /saracasm - jeriqo, on 10/11/2007, -8/+49Because they are angry, spend 20H/day on digg and are bored of iPhone stories.
You know, adolescents like to hate anything popular, that makes them feel elite underground. - LowRentDiggs, on 10/11/2007, -3/+37Because, more than needing something to root for, people need something to root against.
- rebotfc, on 10/11/2007, -6/+39Because they can't afford it.
- hellotyler, on 10/11/2007, -6/+37Apple makes the common man feel like he's using cutting edge technology. Yeah, other phones may do more but do they have the style and ergonomic design that an Apple product does ? No. It looks cool and (theoretically) works smoothly to complete the tasks efficiently that it was designed to as well as to provide some basis of entertainment.
- NSResponder, on 10/11/2007, -11/+41They didn't project 3 million. That's the quantity that they supposedly had ready to ship at the launch date. Their publicly-stated goal is to hit one million units this year. Their actual projection is a carefully guarded secret, I'm sure.
-jcr - ronin510, on 10/11/2007, -20/+45Bloomberg (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aKtbJPOEkO.U&refer=home) quotes around 200,000 units. I've never heard of Blackfriars, so for now, I'll trust Bloomberg's numbers.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28I think it's going to bomb just like the iPod did.
- coolfactor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23Their stated goal is TEN million by the end of 2008. I've seen articles stating one million, but that's wrong. They described it as getting "one percent" of the market, which is about 10 million phones.
- jamie329, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23I doubt it since in one weekend, Apple has sold as many iPhones as half the number of Zunes sold to date.
- tnatharik, on 10/11/2007, -9/+27its a non-worldwide release and i am a victim of it.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Ha, today's comic is relevant to this comment: http://www.geekculture.com/joyoftech/joyimages/979.gif
- jeriqo, on 10/11/2007, -11/+28Please, stop talking about flag.
I didn't ban him for nothing! - tinoproductions, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20No it wont.
The current price already has future earnings priced into it.
Even if apple announce huge quarterly earnings, the price might go down, as investors might even be expecting higher returns.
The market you have in mind is very simple and has weak information efficiency. Which is not the case! - ridercologne, on 10/11/2007, -17/+32the iPhone rocks :P
- cheekdog, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17i'm not ashamed to admit i got one at an apple store friday at 6 p.m......and i freakin' LOVE it!!!
- stealthboy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15If you're sick of it, then shut up and don't view the Apple category here on Digg. The point is, the phone is actually kind of a revolution. Until now, the cell carriers crippled their phones and the phone manufacturers churned out crap that users put up with. Now Apple finally made a decent phone that is user-friendly, looks really sweet, and is powerful. Stop your complaining and start realizing that sometimes it's OK to like things in this world. Are you always this negative?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -10/+23I expected about 250k at the most considering AT&T was reported as having very few phones. 500k? Thats a lot of phones man. I wonder how many were from online though.
- KiTchMe, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Well, that was only the first day (200k), and this is over the weekend (~500k)...
- rob08, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Bloomberg only mentions sold units on the first day. So for the entire weekend it could be higher (maybe even 500k)
- dstanchfield, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11LA Times reporting this number too, fyi. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/6260618.stm
- gbarger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12When my ipod battery dies I plug it in to charge it.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11The profit they earn is much more important than the revenue.
- Tippis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I think what most people want from a "2nd gen" actually *does* come in the form of hardware changes: 3G to make it fast on European/Asian networks being the most obvious.
- bovox, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12I cannot recall an instance when a single wireless carrier received such a huge influx of new 2-year-subscribers in one day. Can you?
- naio, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11The astroturfing unfortunately is worldwide, flag. Here in Brazil the "specialized" press is pointing the iPhone as the first of the new 8 Wonders, even if they've never touched one.
Apple's Advertising Machine is amazing! - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9A little off - Apple *provides* the common man cutting edge technology.
It has a lot of advanced features, for any phone. - EagleTG, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Looks like Bloomburg updated thier numbers as well. The headline now says: Apple May Have Sold 500,000 IPhones, Beating Estimate (Update4)
- Fengpost, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12If you do not trust Blackfriars, how about Piper Jaffray!
http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-9738446-7.html - r3zonance, on 10/11/2007, -0/+99,500,000 actually if you correctly work out that 1% of 1 billion (1,000,000,000) is actually 10,000,000
- canewediggit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8piper jaffrey says 500k as well - http://www.cnbc.com/id/19539541
- opticalfiber, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Reuters is saying 525,000 citing an LA Times report....
http://uk.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUKN0226388120070702 - ronin510, on 10/11/2007, -4/+12looking at the "article," it looks to be blogspam of Gizmodo blogspam that quotes something from Blackfriar's blog (but doesn't link to it). I found this after a quick search: http://blackfriarsinc.com/blog/
I still don't know where the Blackfriars people are getting their numbers, so please take this number with a grain of salt... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10that is ***** awesome hahahahaahah
- lastobelus, on 10/11/2007, -7/+15This is an audience that contains large numbers of the same sort of engineers and techies that are responsible for the hundreds of millions of cellphones already in existence. You know -- the cellphones that are the reason people are lining up to pay two to four times as much for a gadget that has on paper less TECHNICAL features. They do not understand and never will no matter how much you try to explain it to them why the iPhone GUI is so important or why it will be revolutionary. They do not get it. That part of their brain is missing.
Think of all the things throughout your daily life that annoy you, because although they are good enough to serve their function they do not serve their function elegantly and do not bring joy to your life but rather annoy you by requiring a little more effort and fuss to use than you instinctively know is possible.
All these things were designed, engineered and implemented by these kinds of people, dutifully following the instructions of the middle managers to which these types of engineers always seem content to remain enslaved.
They Just. Do. Not. Get. It. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9who cares
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9While it does have a few shortcomings I can see what people see in them. Lets hope they improve it with software updates, 3rd of first party ones if need be. Replacable battery, bluetooth 2.0 streaming, voice dialing, GPS if only through a BT remote are some of the things it should be able do right now.
Sony must be green with envy right now. - darkyoshi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yay, let's all make fun of companies' slogans from almost ten years ago! Woohoo!
- infobhan, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I hear this a lot from people - why spend so much on a phone? Because it's not just a phone. It's an iPod, a functional web browser, a fairly substantial email client, a WiFi device, AND a phone. I've upgrading from a Treo which cost me close to the same amount, but I need to have remote email access for work. And, yes, I have been able to get my corporate email to work with the iPhone.
- cyberdork, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9"Apple Stock is going to skyrocket at the next quaterly earnings report"
Most likely the Apple stock is going to skyrocket BEFORE the next quarterly earnings report. And most likely goes down after the report is release, even if the numbers are very good.
It's the common "buy on the rumor, sell on the news" phenomenon.
As long as the news is not out the sky is the limit and there is lots of room for wishful thinking, but as soon as the report is released, the numbers are set in stone and reality kicks in. The stock might skyrocket after the report, if the numbers are much much better than anticipated. Which is quite unlikely due to the current hype. - LeonardNimrod, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9..... and 6,499,500,000 people who aren't. What's your point?
- coolfactor, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Yah, Apple has done a bang-up job with this product. Steve made sure of it.
- tomwhughes, on 10/11/2007, -6/+12Bring the iPhone to the world!! (especially Australia!).....soon!!!
- bovox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6this is EXACTLY what is happening. people just don't understand the value of design. they do not understand that design is more than just pretty colors and shapes. design is the consideration of the whole user experience and how the user interacts with the object.
- fribhey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7bloomberg.com is now reporting that 700,000 may have been sold
- coolfactor, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11Many of the Apple stores are sold out, and most, if not all, AT&T stores were sold out this weekend.
http://www.apple.com/retail/iphone/
There was no "total failure" of the activation system. According to some sources, only something like 2% of customers were affected, which is still a lot when you're talking about 500,000 sales. Since many people buying during the weekend are bloggers and forum participants, we're hearing all about it.
And once again, features like "cut and paste" are software-related, and Apple stated very clearly back in January that the iPhone is about establishing a new software platform. Software updates will be issued to iPhone users that address issues. -
