- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yes, for some videos we have it will be nice to have this program simply repackage a video as a .mov file ready to be put on an iPod (which avoids the time consuming and quality killing re-encoding of an already compressed file), but for the majority of videos, there will still need to be re-encoding done (aka transcoding, the technical term for it).
Most people who will put videos on their iPods are doing so with TV shows and movies they've downloaded. Most all shows and movies you'll find online are encoded in Divx or Xvid (note: I see no support for Xvid in this program) at rates around 600-900Kbps (which is a fine bitrate for the iPod) but in resolutions well above what the iPod can handle. This means that despite this program putting divx files into .mov containers (and doing whatever else it does to them), they won't play on the iPod.
The iPod has the following limits on video: H.264 at 320x240 with a max rate of 786Kbps : MPEG-4 at 480x480 with a max rate of 2.5Mbps.
Divx and Xvid are mpeg-4 variations, so all we are worried about here is the MPEG-4 limitation of 480x480. If a downloaded video happens to be smaller than 480x480, and this program works as it claims, then you should be all set to process videos by this program and put them right onto your iPod without re-encoding. But, if the resolution of your downloaded video is larger than 480x480, this program won't work as you claim it will. You will still need to re-encode.
Even if you must re-encode, I think this program could come in handy, by making Divx videos ready to be brought into Quicktime for re-encoding into iPod ready H.264 files. - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2From http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html:
H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
3ivx is capable of the second. - Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh wait, no, I was right. It is only available for Mac. That Windows version on the Download page is for the 3ivx codec, not DivX Doctor.
Well, guess it's back to trying to find a plug-in for Quicktime that'll let you view Divx and Xvid files in it. I found one for Xvid, but I'm still looking for Divx. Besides, nothing guaranties me I can get it to work. It looks very... home-made. Hopefully this gets to the main page so someone with a mac can test it out. If worst comes to worst, I'll have to go a few dorms down to use my friend's Mac. My boy John has an iBook. But that means, spending time on it, and I hate to invade other peoples personal stuff. - BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They offer a Windows version as well. And thanks for the details, Snyder.
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, look at that. lol. All I saw was the OS X and OS 9 on the main page and was all like "Damnit!". I didn't bother to go to the download section. :D
Well, I'll give it a shot in a bit. I'ma 'bout to go get some brakefast at the diner for my college, which is a bit of a walk, then have a smoke, and then I'll take a look at it when I get back. I hope it works, cause I failed at getting my personal DVD rips and downloaded shows to load in Quicktime for me to re-encode. - adm58, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You still need a codec installed to play it back... I'm skeptical that it will play on an iPod. No one has been able to test it yet.
- dj_sea2005, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks for sharing your personal life mate!
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks like this program does in fact support Xvid, but I can only gather that information from some posts I read in the program's forums. I'm not sure if they were talking about development versions or something else. I'd try the program myself to find out, but alas, I have no mac yet. I'm holding out for the Intel switch.
On an even better note, the program supports AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio for those of you who have encoded their Divx movies with the original AC3 stream intact. - frequeniquity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i converted a file of a show that i had and while it converted and played in quicktime, the video didnt play in itunes, only the audio. i wonder if that means that it wont play on the ipod?
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh funny with all these guides coming out and no one actually has a video capable iPod yet.
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ frequeniquity: What was the codec of the original file before you passed it through "DivX Doctor"? Was it a Divx, Xvid, or something else?
On the plus side, it does show that the program worked at getting Quicktime to play the video. And since you have the video playing fine in Quicktime, just follow the steps in the link bellow and you'd have a movie sure to work on the iPod and in iTunes. I'm speaking of the re-encoding process that we were trying to avoid for videos smaller than 480x480, but have no choice but to do if the original video is larger than 480x480.

lol. :)
Moose-Syncro-Split for ever!! - Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ Bismillah: I would imagine that now, this story has new worth to many diggers looking for such a tool to aid with two new Apple products that are real hot topics on digg right now. I think that gives it relevance despite it being a duplicate, IMHO.
@ dj_sea2005: I'm a very open person. :) - videosoftware, on 09/20/2008, -0/+0OJOsoft Total Video Converter can be used to convert all popular video formats to mobile phone, Sony PSP, video iPod, Apple iPhone, Zune video player and other portable video players.
http://www.mov-converter.com/ojosoft-total-video-c ... - Lynxpro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Will the new iPods show ripped/converted letterboxed material with the black bars, or will it expand the picture to accommodate the entire squarish iPod screen?
I ask this since the commercial downloaded ABC shows available through iTunes are shot widescreen for the HD feed but shown in pan&scan for the analog SD transmission, and Apple is only providing them in pan&scan format at this time. - bunni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The rral question is...when will the encoders of torrents start switching to h.264?"
Bingo, I bet we have h.264 ipodable video torrents right next to the xvid torrents before the damn thing is even in anyones hands! - kungfumaster007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.3ivx.com/support/windows/encoding/ge_mpeg4.html
I used this guide on my PC and worked fine. I don't have the new iPod yet so I don't know if it'll actually play on it but it played fine on iTunes. Encoding time wasn't bad at all. It took me about 20-30 min. to covert to .mp4 from 42min xvid file.
(After I did this once, xvid file started working on QuickTime Pro)
It took me about 12 hours to convert the same 42 min xvid file to .m4v on QuickTime Pro. I think this GraphEdit method is the way to go. - newave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The rral question is...when will the encoders of torrents start switching to h.264?
- dickrichie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+03ivX .AVI is such an antiquated and quarky codec I dont understand why anyone would use it. Especially when H.264 has such better quality and is THE HD standard for so many legitimate pieces of content. Im glad that hopefully the ipod and this tool will help people realize they are using old technology. Of course they are probably the same people that refuse to import into AAC and continue to use MP3. Poor sad bastards.
- pdavis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No excuse for releasing a video player that doesn't support the majority of the most common formats. Who wants to the hassel of converting files?
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Well, guess it's back to trying to find a plug-in for Quicktime that'll let you view Divx and Xvid files in it. I found one for Xvid, but I'm still looking for Divx."
Dude, divx.com check their divx labs where they have beta plug-ins for QuickTime that will allow you to view both Divx and Xvid! You don't have to thank me all at once. :D

Here is a screenshot of a Xvid being played with QT.

It's a beta but works great.

Go to divx.com and get the free codec for windows and it should let you view both file formats with in QT. - jnorris441, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No recompression, you just need to convert it.

http://www.3ivx.com/download/windows.html - sb1975, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nope not going to work I just uninstalled divx on my mac and the video does not play, the audio plays fine (because it's AAC or MP3 I don't know) but no video. I don't think the iPod have divx on it so it's not going to work...
myth busted. - kenadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been ripping DVD's for my Palm for about a month now and http://divx.ppccool.com/ (PocketDivXEncoder) works well... I use TCPMP on palm and it'll play almost anything you throw at it... I've just ordered a 30GB iPod and I hope that it will play the pocket divx stuff... one nice feature is choosing "PDA" it sets up 320x240 resolution that is actually quite watchable (similar to the screen shot shown in the other digg.) These normally way in at about 70MB for a 43-45 min show.
- sb1975, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It works great on my mac. And plays great in iTunes. but this my because I have divx on my mac and the ipod does not. I going to uninstall divx and see if it still works...
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BlueStarr, but that also looks to be only for mac's. :( Oh well.
